• RDP from domain workstation to non-domain workstation via VPN

  I am trying to RDP from a domain computer to a non-domain computer over a VPN. I created a rdp profile for a specified user (for example user name: USERX) with the option to save the password. I am able to establish the connection the first time by entering in the password. However, from that point on, whenever the RDP link is reestablished, it would state that my login details were incorrect and ask me re-type the password for COMP\USERX. Problem is, I don't have a domain called COMP and the password would fail even if reentered. The only way I can reestablish the connection is by choosing the option to login as another user.

• Where can I buy a good rackmount workstation?

  We have a product which consists of a GUI program and all the hardware goes in a rack. Our department bought a rackmount server for the first unit, but I dont think this is adequate for applications that use graphics (correct me if I'm wrong - we bought a Dell R710). Could you tell me of a good rackmount workstation we could buy for our product? Also, would it be risky for us to build our own rackmount?

  Does anyone know how to run applications hosted on a client VM from an icon created on the host computer. For example I want to run IE8 installed on the client VM on my host XP computer running IE6. I cant update to IE6 on the host because of compliance issues. My main operation system is Win 7. when I am hard-wired, I can use internet inside vmware but when I am wireless, I cannot use internet inside vmware... I did a research and found that the network adapter should be on NAT instead of bridge, I tried that but it did not work either.

  I'm just doing a VMWare Workstation 8 installation. However, on trying to boot (or create) a VM, it's reporting "Could not get vmx86 driver version: The handle is invalid." It recommends reinstalling, which I've done. Also, VMWare Player just hangs. Was going to post on the VMWare forums, but can't seem to create a new discussion (even though I've registered/logged in). It's our own fault for being too eager to upgrade, I guess.

  I've been trying to install either Arch Linux or Fedora 17 on VMWare Workstation (7.1.3). After I point to the right ISO image, I get the following error: Booting the kernel PANIC: early exception 0d rip:ffffffff81042dc4 error 0 cr2 0 I am trying to install it on a machine which has a 3rd generation i5 processor. After checking A VMWare panic early exception fix for ivy bridge i3, i5, i7, I tried to turn off the nosmep acpi. This is around, I get the same error but at a different address.   I am running VMware Workstation 6.1.5 (build-126130) on CentOS 5.3 (Final). One of the guest machines is reporting an error when I try to power on the most recent snapshot. Snapshots further back in the timeline will power on without any problem. Error: Unable to change virtual machine power state: Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to. Apparently I'm not the only one with this problem. Others have been reporting it since at least early 2005. The forums say to delete unused lock files and restart any hung VMware processes (or restart the host machine), which I have done. Still no luck. Any other ideas?

• Can I minimize VMWare Workstation from exclusive mode?

  I am running a VM on two monitors, in fullscreen exclusive mode. I would like to be able to minimize the VM and mess around in the Host, then go back to the VM. I can do this by pressing CTRL+ALT to get out of fullscreen mode, but this puts the VM back onto a single monitor, which moves all my VM's windows back to the main virtual screen. This is annoying, because when I come back to the VM, I have to go back to multiple monitor mode, and move windows back to where they should be. Is there a way to temporarily escape from fullscreen exclusive mode, without disturbing multi-monitor layout? I should note that I'm only using exclusive mode to get rid of the popup toolbar that otherwise appears when your mouse gets too close to the top of the screen. If there's another way to kill that, please let me know. My host and guest are both Windows 7 x64, and I'm running VMWare Workstation 8.

• Getting a VMnet0 error in VMWare workstation after updating host computer from Windows 8 to 8.1

  Yesterday, I updated my computer from Windows 8 to 8.1. I have VMWare Workstation 10 running Windows XP on this computer and prior to the update I had no issues connecting to my network. However, since updating, I haven't been able to connect to any network and I'm getting the following error: "The network bridge on device VMnet0 is not running. The firtual machine will not be able to communicate with the host or with other machines on your network. Failed to connect virtual device Ethernet0" I've checked all of my settings which currently have my network adapter set for a bridged connection and under device status "connected" is checked. Not really sure where to go from here, but after doing some research I have seen that others users have reported getting this error when updating the OS (any OS, not windows 8 specifically) of the host computer.   Hi there, awhile ago I upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 x64 from Windows XP 32 bit edition. However not before virtualizing the physical installation and I continue to run it under VMWare Workstation today. The performance on the resulting VM is just absolutely atrocious! I've done a lot of uninstalling stuff that's not longer needed since the machine is virtual in an effort to reduce RAM, but in general the responsiveness seems sluggish. I also run the Virtual Machine on it's own separate HD that is seldom used by the host OS. I'm just hoping for some general tips in increasing VMWare performance anywhere, thoughts? EDIT: Both of the below answers were excellent starting points for me. However I did like the selected answer's strategies on disk management. I am running the Virtual Machine in a separate external hard disk, likely I'm going to have to reconfigure somehow. Thanks all!

  I'm new to VMware and despite having read the documentations, I'm having trouble. I'm using VMware workstation Stand-Alone package to turn a physical Win Server 2008 R2 into a usable VM appliance. The source and destination part is getting me here. It seems using keyword "localhost" doesn't cut all the way through. Does the shared folder have to be in my local drive for that matter? For ip, am I using the simple private IP that my nearest DHCP has given me? But what if I have more than one interfaces that have two or three different private ip addresses? Thanks.

• Using physical disk with VMware Workstation

  I am using VMware Workstation 9.0 under Windows 7 and trying to load my Linux from Physicaldisk0. And it boots, grub sees the two partitions on the disk (I checked in command line) and the kernel and the initrd loads and then it stops saying "device not found"and drops me into an emergency shell. Indeed there is absolutely nothing in /dev not the /sda device it expects not /hda nothing that looks like a disk. Edit: I can boot the Linux disk just fine if I boot it from BIOS and not as a VM. Edit2: The question is, how can I make this setup work?

• VMWare Workstation can't read CD/DVD drive

  A fresh install of VMWare Workstation 7 (7.1.1 build 282343) on Windows 7 64 bit. When I try to read a CD/DVD from a guest (either to install a fresh guest or to read a CD within an existing VM I get the following error: Cannot connect virtual device ide1:0 because no corresponding device is available on the host. I've tried fiddling with the IDE channels as well as tried SCSI with no joy. What am I missing? I can run ISOs fine but I don't want to have to convert everything to an ISO when I presume that this should just work fine.

The guest is os is configured for a static ip of 192.168.1.115, which depending on the network I'm connected to, may not be available. When I want to view my development work I hit that up in my web browser. • Windows Server 2003 (as workstation) unable to write to Samba fileshares

  Setup is a Samba fileserver under Linux, which i am trying to access from a Windows Server 2003 box which has been reconfigured as a workstation. I can log onto the fileshares and can copy/delete files, but trying to open a file then write to it fails. Renaming files also fails with an error about requiring a filename. Drag/dropping files onto Xemacs gives me a message about copying from the network zone, and once open the file is read-only. Any ideas of what is wrong? I suspect it is a miscommunication of security details, as folder security options are all unchecked (checking them has no effect). I know it is not a problem with Samba itself, as Window2000, WindowsXP, and Nautulas (under Linux) can all access/edit fileshare files fine using the same userid/password. I am not using domain logins.

  Hi, I have noticed that whenever I create a Capture Movie, the movie is fine but the mouse pointer is not visible at all. The clicks are on buttons file menus are executed but is hard for a viewer of the capturre movie session to follow the recording smoothly. This was not a problem in previous versions of WorkStation. Is this a bug or is there a setting I can set to see the mouse pointer? Note: VM Tools are installed, Host is Vista Ultimate Edtion SP1, x64 and the guest is a Win XP SP2.   I have a host computer (Win7-64) with three different harddrives. It runs several VMs which are distributed among those harddrives for a better performance. Now with VMWare Workstation 8 it is possible to "share" the VMs. I'd like to use this feature, but I have to convert the VMs to "Shared VMs". When I try this WMWare forces me to copy the VMs to one predefined folder, thus making my effort of distributing the VMs among the harddrives meaningless. Is there any possibility to keep the VMs where they are and share them anyway?

  I am planning to buy a Dell PowerEdge T110 Server and convert it to workstation similar to Dell PowerEdge Precision T1700. The reasoning behind is the cost, if I do it by myself, it costs two times cheaper. However, I wonder what might go wrong in this way?   I'm having a bit of a problem with using three monitors with VMWare Workstation 10. When only two monitors are enabled in the system I have an option to "Cycle Multiple Monitors", available from the View menu (in full screen). When I enable the third monitor that option is no longer in the menu and I can only use one monitor at a time. I've found this article and a "Choose a Monitor Layout" button is mentioned there but I'm unable to see it anywhere. I'm using Windows 8.1 as the host and Ubuntu 14.04 as the guest. The graphics card is AMD Radeon R9 290x with latest beta drivers

  i am trying to establish a VPN Connection in my GuestOS. But i get a timeout every Time. The Host : Win 7 The Guest: WinXp Software: VM-Workstation 8 The GuestOS is bridged to the Host network and has his own IP. The normal Connection in the GuestOS works fine but when i try to establish the VPN (no Programm used , just simple Windows VPN) i get an timeout?   Hi. Exploring Vmware products/services and have a few questions. As I understand VM, you can use VMWare Workstation to create a VM of a target machine/box/OS. Let's call this VM, "foo". If I have 100 client PCs in my dept, and I want to install the VM (foo) on each client, and also manage the remote VM instances of (foo). How can I accompish this? Let's assume that the client machines are running Windows7, and have the vmplayer app installed on the box. I'm looking to do the following kinds of actions regarding the remote client machines: -Update the foo VM/image with new updated copies -Make sure that every VM "foo" has the same user, but a unique passwd -Monitor the traffic/status of each client VM "foo" oin each client -Start/Stop each client VN "foo" from the master console -Etc... Can this be accomplished? How would I do it, what services/products would I need? I've tried toalking to a few of the pre-sales guys in VMWare, and got nowhere, other than telling me to email my questions!! Looking at google shed more insight, but I still have questions. So, if you have detailed VMWare understanding, pointers to consultants, or resellers who can help, all pointers are greatly appreciated. Thanks -tom
