• Any way to stop VMWare workstation from dropping SSH connections?

  I have VMWare workstation 8 with a few Linux guests. I have had problems maintaining an active SSH connection to my VMs when they are in bridged mode. I first read that the onboard realtek network cards were not well supported so I bought a Intel Pro/1000 GT card. This supposedly had support. But this made no difference. Connections via SSH are active for about the first 3 minutes then hang and die. I have changed the TCP Checksum offload on the Intel and Realtek NICs, but this only works some of the time and even then not for very long. The best I could do was about 20 minutes before the connection was dropped. Any ideas?

I've just installed VMware Workstation 7.0.1 Build 2276000, after that Win 7 stuck on welcome screen and I have to click on the user image to continue. Before that because I have just one account Win7 just showed welcome screen for a minute and then it went to Win7 desktop automatically, but now I have to click on my account image to continue. Something that I've done : Start Run Msconfig Services Tab Checked Hide all Microsoft Services Disabled all services except Eset Services (Anti Virus) Unfortunately the problem haven't solved yet :( How should I fix it?

• Why do I get a My Disney window when installing VMWare Workstation?

  I'm assuming this is a virus, though my virus checker can't find it. I downloaded the latest vmware workstation 7 installer. I'm running Windows 7 64bit. I go to install it, and the installer window is a Disney website. Upon further investigation, what's happening is that the vmware installer extracts/writes a bunch of files to a temp directory. One of those files is an index.htm file. When I open it, sure enough it's the Disney file. I used sysinternals Process Monitor to look for anything fishy, but the only thing I see touching that index.htm file is the vmware installer and explorer.exe

• Will SSD degrade when running VMWare Workstation from SSD?

  My main OS (Windows 7 or 8) is runned from SSD. I'd want to run Mac OS X 10.7 or 10.8 using VMWare workstation. I've heard that VMWare doesn't support TRIM and other things to optimize SSD usage. So SSD will quickly degrade if VM will be runned from SSD. Will it be better to put guest OS's files (.vmdk and the rest) to external HDD (connected through USB 2 or 3) instead of SSD? What advantages and disadvantages it will give? What if VM will be put to internal HDD? At what drive type performance of VM will be better?

• VMware Workstation "Power off" and "Suspend" buttons are disabled. What is going on?

  I've been using an XP image for a few months now with no problems. Recently the power off and resume buttons were disabled and I'm not sure what happened to cause that. In addition, the menu items to do those functions are grayed out (like VM | Power | Power Off) I'm using VMware Workstation 6.5.3 on a Windows 7 64-bit host. The image is Windows XP 32-bit. There is plenty of free space and memory on the host and the CPU is not pegged. I am able to power off the image through its Start menu, but that's a workaround not a fix. Any suggestions? TIA EDIT: Well after manually shutting down the image then closing and reopening the image file (which I've done before) in preparation for reinstalling the tools as suggested below, it looks fine. The power off and suspend buttons are enabled and work. So what do I do with this question now? "Close and restart a few times and it may work" doesn't seem useful...

I installed it but when i run it, it shows this window: But, when I press on "Browse", this window comes up Even if I select the linux-headers-3.8.0-31-generic folder, it says that it can't find the C headers for that kernel. Why? P.S. I already tried sudo apt-get install linux-headers-3.8.0-31-generic and the terminal says that the kernel is up to date.

• RHEL 5.3 Kickstart - How specify location of individual package in Workstation folder?

  I keep getting "package does not exist" errors during the install. I made a kickstart ISO to create an unattended install of a RHEL 5.3 build machine for C++ software releases. It pulls the kickstart config file from our internal web server. This is handy; it makes it easy to test and modify without having to make a new ISO. And I plan to check it in to version control if I can get it working. Anyway, the rpm packages are located in two folders on the disk; Client and Workstation. The packages install fine for the ones that are physically located under the Client folder. It cannot find those under the Workstation folder such as as doxygen and subversion complaining that packages do not exist. • Domain workstation acting up and I can't track it down.

  I have a developer with a Windows XP (SP2) 64 bit machine. If the machine is left on overnight (or any period of time longer than 5-6 hours) it takes 2-3 minutes to open any local drive and his network drives are no longer accessible. • Connect server to router with workstation in between?

  I have a server (9 yr old Dell with Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition) and a workstation (Laptop with Vista) which are both connected to a router. The workstation is able to access the server via web browser for testing my web development projects. Since the server is old and does not have a wireless card, I am wondering if it is possible to connect the server directly to the workstation while maintaining the ability to connect to the server from the workstation. The reason is that the computers are in a separate room from the router and I am trying to limit the amount of wires on the floor, along with trying to avoid buying more hardware (like a wireless card).   I successfully encrypted a VM image and confirmed it still runs. I then closed the VM and reopened it and confirmed the encryption password was valid and worked. However, now I want to un-encrypt the VM. When I choose that option, it asks for "your password". I assume this means the password I created when I encrypted it. It doesn't work. I can still open the VM with the password and run it. But, it refuses to remove the encryption using that password. Am I missing something? Is there a password that I don't know about? Some details: I created this image (using standalone converter; physical machine source) I converted it to ACE Converted back to a normal VM (un-ACE'd it) Encrypted it Cannot remove the encryption but can open it and run it As you can see... It will be running a few VMWare Worksation virtual machines - A dev machine running VS-2010, a build machine, a version-control machine, a web server for testing, a "personal" machine running office etc. I'll be connecting the computer to my stereo, so I'll also be running iTunes (possible on a dedicated VM) and I want the computer to be a silent one. I'll probably use an Antec P183 case. I was advised on Serverfault to use Raid10 for performance. Raid 10 uses 4 disks. So, my question is as follows: In terms of heat, noise, reliability, warranty, price, capacity and performance, what would you suggest: A Raid10 4 disk array using eco-friendly disks such as the $94 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green, or one high performance disk such as the 2TB Western Digital Caviar Black at $280?

  How does one go about managing a lab of Linux workstations? I'd like for users to be able to log in, run their GUI apps (LibreOffice, Firefox, Eclipse, etc), and for the computers to be able to be used as compute nodes (OpenMPI). This part I'm fine with. But how can I centrally deploy a new software package or upgrade an installed package? How can I reload the entire OS on a given node, as if these workstations were part of a super computing cluster? Is there a nice program to help with setting up PXE booting and image management, and remotely managing packages? Ideally such a system would work with Ubuntu. If there isn't a nice package, how could this be set up manually?

• VMWare workstation: guest OS becomes sluggish after being idle for 12+ hours?

  Hi, My VM becomes sluggish after a few hours(~12 hours or so) of being idle, there is no impact on the host, just the gueste. The guest OS becomes sluggish. It has lots of RAM, runs on Raid 0, quad core i5 750, everything is defragged, but the only way I found to keep it's responsiveness optimal is to shutdown(dumps the memory) and the start; a restart of the guest OS doesnt dump the memory so I need to be able to do a stop of the VM, and then a start. Coming from Hyper-V I had to learn VMWare and after a few months of fine tunning it I'm quite impressed with how configurable VMWare is. This is the only small issue I haven't been able to fix, has anyone encountered this?

• One Windows Domain workstation can ping gateway but gets no internet access

  One of the (Windows XP SP3) workstations of our Windows Domain could not access internet anymore, this problem suddenly happened overnight. The domain controllers (there are three of them) are all running Windows Server 2008. First I compared the output of ipconfig /all on the faulty workstation with the output of a working workstation and it was just fine as it had always been. In particular the default gateway was correct and always remained pingable from the faulty workstation. I guessed that something was wrong with the DHCP service and I restarted the DHCP server service on all of our three DCs as well as the DHCP client service on the faulty workstation. This didn't solve the issue. I then thought of renewing the DHCP lease with ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew and here is my first question: why did this never work? The same IP address (192.168.0.45) kept being assigned despite all my attempts to renew it (note that all our workstation are getting their TCP/IP automatically.) Even by leaving the domain and changing the computer name the same address was yet again obtained... Anyway I then proceeded to switch the TCP/IP configuration for that machine manually to another free valid IP address (192.168.0.41)... and then the internet access came back! I then cleared any traces of the previous IP in the DHCP leases list and in the DNS tables of our DCs and, after setting back the TCP/IP configuration to 'automatic', finally, the new lease would be granted (192.168.0.41) alongside with the internet access. My second question: what went suddenly wrong with the original IP address?

• Workstation Build: Single 2.66ghz i-7 with overclock potential, OR Dual 5520 2.26ghz Xeons?

  There are probably better places to ask this, but I am used to the excellent quality of responses on stack overflow. I am rebuilding my desktop in a few months. Aside from normal lightweight internet usage, I use it to run sqlServer, mySql, 1-2 Ubuntu VMs from time to time, lots of IDE's, and a media server for my PS3. The two possible setups cost the exact same amount (within $50) and would both have 12gb 1333mhz ddr3 ram and a 500gb RAID-0 array (250x2). Now, If I go with a single i-7 920 2.66ghz quadcore, I can easily overclock it to 3ghz, and would have cash leftover to get a 160gb ssd (either the ocz vertex or the 120gb intel) for the main OS/Program install drive. Else, I could get a dual lga1366 motherboard with two e5520 Xeon's (2.26ghz),just use the disks I already have. So, do I go for 8 physical/16 virtual cores at 2.26ghz (No overclocking on server boards) with normal disk I/O, or a 4 physical/8 virtual cores at 3.0ghz with really outstanding disk I/O?

  There are supposed to be 2 networks: i) The first one is the one which all the virtual machines and the host share(Host-only condition). This one is easily achievable for me, as an amateurish beginner. ii)The second network is the one in which only 2 virtual machines are to be connected. These 2 virtual machines should also be connected to the Network(i). I understand that for the 2 virtual hosts that are to be connected in a separate networks simultaneously, it means that they need to have 2 IPs, and hence 2 ports(physical)/ethernet interfaces?

  I saw there are similar questions, but I don't think they answer exactly my questions. Did anyone managed to get 3D acceleration work under VMWare workstation 8? I have VMware 8.01 installed on Ubuntu 11.10. The guest I am trying is also Ubuntu 11.10. I manually installed vmware-tools and it went well, except the X-config part was skipped as it said the distribution driver is used. The guest runs well but it seems fall back to 2D mode. Does any one has any idea how to enable 3D acceleration under VMWare workstaion with Linux guest?
