• Why is vCenter 5.1u1 exiting hosts from maintenance mode?

  This vCenter server was just upgraded to 5.1 update 1. I'm going through hosts and bringing firmware up to date, then upgrading them from various versions of 5.0 to 5.1u1. vCenter 5.1u1 seems to have an interesting new behavior: it's removing hosts from maintenance mode when they reconnect after being disconnected -- but very inconsistently, I've seen it maybe 4 or 5 times on ~25-30 host reboots. I've only seen it happen on 5.0 hosts that have not yet been upgraded to 5.1. In the image, I placed the host in maint mode and rebooted it into the HP SPP DVD's automatic update mode. After its usual ~40 minute update process, the host came back online.. and 7 seconds before even logging that the host had reconnected, vCenter had sent the host a task to exit maintenance mode. In my understanding, the only time vCenter should drop a host out of maintenance mode is when vCenter put it into maintenance mode itself (such as a VUM upgrade task). Why would this vCenter be unilaterally exiting a host from user-initiated maintenance mode? Edit, additional info: I ran the firmware upgrades on 5 more hosts, all at the same time. Two of them exited maint mode after reconnecting, three did not. The common factor of those exiting maint mode seems to be how long they were offline; the two that took a few tries to boot to the virtual media are the two that got knocked out of maint mode. esx31 (image above): 45 minutes unresponsive esx19 (exited maint): 87 minutes unresponsive esx24 (stayed in maint): 32 minutes unresponsive esx29 (stayed in maint): 39 minutes unresponsive esx32 (stayed in maint): 30 minutes unresponsive esx34 (exited maint): 70 minutes unresponsive Edit: The disconnect time idea seems to have been a red herring, as it's not happening consistently. Additionally, in the vpxd.log the exit maint mode task initiation seems to always immediately follow this vim.EnvironmentBrowser.queryProvisioningPolicy SOAP call. I'm not seeing any other differences in events before or after this in the reconnect process, aside from the extra events caused by exiting maintenance mode. Given the log's mention of provisioning policies, looking for autodeploy-related maintenance mode issues turns up complaints about similar behavior (though I'm not using autodeploy at all).

• How to connect 3 monitors into an Asus 9800GT

  I don't know if this is possible but, I've heard that there exist some DVI connections that allow and recognize the connection os 2 Monitores in the same port (I can be wrong tho). I have an Asus 9800GT 512MB on my computer that runs Ubuntu 12.04 and Arch Linux, and I am trying to connect 3 monitors. I already have 2 (17" each), and want to connect a new one with 19", but on my 9800GT I only have 2 DVI connections. Is there anyway to have 3 monitores extended without having to buy a new GPU ? • Packet dropped even when firewall is turned off in windows server 2008

  We have a windows 2008 server and lately we have started seeing a lot of 5152 Events logged in the server (Windows Filtering Platform blocked a packet). We have an inbound rule configured to allow connections to the port which was working fine earlier. I'm not sure what changed lately. But this doesn't make any sense. The packet is dropped even when windows firewall is disabled. What am I missing?

• Can't get Monit to work

  I am trying to configure Monit on my local machine to get a taste at how it works, but I have some issues. What I am trying to do is to get any evidence that Monit is up and running correctly and is actually monitoring something. So my /etc/monit/monitrc looks like set daemon 60 set logfile /var/log/monit.log set idfile /var/lib/monit/id set statefile /var/lib/monit/state set eventqueue basedir /var/lib/monit/events slots 100 set httpd port 2812 and allow username:password check process apache2 with pidfile /usr/local/apache/logs/apache2.pid start program = "/etc/init.d/apache2 start" stop program = "/etc/init.d/apache2 stop" if failed port 6543 protocol http then exec "/usr/bin/touch /tmp/monit" If I understand correctly, since apache does not listen on port 6543 (it is just a random number) I should get an error, and as a consequence the file /tmp/monit should be created. So I start monit by sudo service monit start sudo monit monitor apache2 Unfortunately no such file is created. Instead the web console shows an error for apache - execution failed. The log says 'apache2' failed to start. What am I doing wrong? EDIT As suggested in the comments, I ran monit in verbose mode, by monit -vv monitor apache2 (the exact command suggested in the comments failed). • Add unallocated space to lvm

  I shrunk my windows partition and now have 10 GB of unallocated space that I now want to use to grow my / partition which is an ext4 in an lvm. I'm running Fedora 12. I ran system-config-lvm but the "Initialize Entry" button is greyed out. The unallocated space is not adjacent to the lvm but I cannot move the partitions in GParted like I was able to with ext3 in the past. I cannot create a new partition either as it says it cannot have more than 4 primary partitions. I don't see any option to create an extended partition. So my question is, how do I add that unallocated space to the lvm so I can grow the size of the / partition? I don't want to reinstall Fedora.

• Audit success in event log from not administrator IP - is that immediately a hack success indicator?

  I checked event log today and between mass of failed audit events I found some successes which originated from not my country. However they look a little weird and no process is specified, while when I logon using RDP it says winlogon.exe I am wondering whether that means my system was compromised or there are good variants and it doesnt mean its all that bad. I am using a VPS solution if thats useful.

• How to set up dual quadro cards on RHEL 5.5?

  I have a RHEL 5 workstation with 2 nvidia Quadro FX4500 cards, with one display attached to each card. After doing a clean install of RHEL 5.5, the second display doesnt work (it worked ok in RHEL 5.2). Neither separate X screens nor Xinerama are working. The kernel version is 2.6.18-194.el5 I've tried nvidia drivers 185.18.36 (the ones that i was using on 5.2) and the latest 260.19.36 and neither works. • Cannot resize OS X partition

  I am trying to resize my existing Mac OS Extended partition on my Macbook to install Windows 7 (using steps similar to these), but when ever I go to apply the changes, I get this error: Partition failed Partition failed with the error: The partition cannot be resized. Try reducing the amount of change in the size of the partition. The total capacity of the hard drive in question is 260GB, with the entirety being taken up by the OS X boot partition. There is I am aiming to shrink that partition down to 60GB. How can I fix this problem? I have been reducing the amount of change by 10GB each attempt, but it still is not working. I assume the problem is that there is not a large amount of continuous space on the device. Is there some way to can do a manual defrag that would rectify this problem?

• Fix superblock size after dd?

  I've recently installed Linux Mint 11, and somehow my partition table ended up so that both it and the unallocated space for Windows 7 were inside an extended partition, which Windows didn't like when I tried to install. So, because I had spent a few hours configuring Mint already, I backed it up to my external hard drive using dd. I have restored it to the new partition I made for Mint, but new the partition isn't the same size as the one I dd'd from, so I'm getting yelled at for having a bad superblock size. Is there any way that I can fix this while keeping the new, smaller partition? -Trey

• Computer and internet use on a boat?

  Let's assume that I seriously would like to be able to use my computer as easily and as carefreely while on a boat as I do while at home. In short, if I were on a boat for extended periods, such as two weeks at a time and occasionally over a few days out of port (this would be a 2 person sailing vessel), what would my options be for power, durability, and of course, internet access? I want more than just email, as I will likely keep doing a tad of development, and will be looking at google earth from time to time. I am already assuming that we're going with some kind of laptop, maybe even a macbook pro 12". I personally feel that netbooks are underpowered. And the last computer that I got a boat-friendly rating for was a ZX Spectrum, which was before the internet, and was likely due to it's 12vdc-happiness.

However didn't see the Note about the Resource Kit diskpart for download is not for Windows 2003. So I did the extend using the Windows 2000 version. Not sure if this is the reason but Diskpart is sitting there now for about 15 minutes or so and it's only gotta extend by 10GB. Should it be taking this long? Am I asking for trouble now that I've used a Windows 2000 version of diskpart on a Windows 2003 machine (VM)?

  I have extended the space of my SAN vDisk from 1TB to 1.2TB, but Windows Explorer doesn't show the new size. After resize the vdisk in the SAN Manager, the Disk Management utility shows the 200GB unallocated space, then I resized the partition to use the unallocated space to get a 1.2TB partition, the process was succesfully, but in the Windows File Explorer the disk still have 1TB of total space. Win version: Windows Storage Server Enterprise 2007. Do I need to restart the server? How can I use the new extra space without rebooting?

  I'm quite new using mysql, so let me know if I'm missing something. I took some holidays, and when I got back to work and I tried to log in phpmyadmin I got a ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2). I never had this problem, so I was browsing to look for a solution. I tried some things, and I'm afraid I touched too much. I couldn't solve the problem, and the I realized that I had some actualizations to be done, and I thought that they may be helpful for mysql. Then I also realized that when I was doing this actualizations first day, they stopped because I had a lack of space, so I restarted then. Then,when the system was configuring mysql, it didn't advance. I waited for a long time and then I just stopped it and restarted the computer. After it, I just tried to uninstall mysql with sudo apt-get remove mysql-server-5.1, and install it again, but it didn't work. Now I have 2 questions: What do you think it is happening? Should I remove mysql completely? What should I do? I'm afraid of losing my databases, is there anyway to recover the data? • Set default reminder pattern to iCal Calendar/Group

  Hi all I have in iCal some Calendars/Groups named Birthday, Exams and Holidays. Now I am wondering if I can assign a default reminder pattern to all Exams events, for example: 2 Weeks before, 1 Week before, 2 Days before. The result should be that I don't have to specify each time the reminder pattern of an event in Exams when I create a New one. NOTE: If iCal can't do this, is it maybe possible do that through an automator action etc.?

• Automatically keeping two excel data tables in-sync (w/out VBA)

  I'm putting together a workbook for tracking a stock portfolio. The primary sheet contains a table with the list of the transactions. From this I would like to create an overview table on another sheet with only one row per unique stock symbol that includes things like cost basis, returns, etc. The problem is that nothing I've tried updates the overview table correctly when rows are added to the transaction table. And even then the range of the table isn't extended down to include new rows as they become valid. Essentially I'm looking for a way that auto-adds rows to a table and copies the formula based on a different table changing without using VBA. • Three displays, one video card and no eyefinity mode

  I am looking for a video card to run three monitors, it could be hdmi, dvi or vga. I want the three monitors to show an extended desktop but as three different desktops with maybe different resolutions, so when i maximize something it should be maximized only in one monitor. The information seems confusing, I think eyefinity tricks the OS to make it looks like one big display. I am sure I dont want this. So my question(s) is, is there a video card in the market that support 3 displays without eyefinity? Or can I use an eyefinity enabled card ( with one active display port) to run three monitors and disable eyefinity from the driver settings or something?

• Two virtual computers using one laptop?

  Hi, I have a laptop and an external display. I am able to use the external display either as extended desktop OR duplicate desktop. I also use a separate keyboard and mouse. So effectively, the laptop acts just as a box without display. I want to know is it possible to use the laptop as 2 virtual PCs. (with separate control). I.E., one person uses the laptop as a laptop, and other person can simultaneously connect a keyboard and mouse and the external display and effectively get a second PC. OS I am using - windows (thought solution for other OSes are welcome). Laptop is a Dell Precision M6300. thanks JP

• Out of sync audio / video on Hackintohs

  I have a PC with OSx86 on it. (10.6.2) Under Leopard my videos worked great, but now with VLC the audio is all garbled and video is way too fast. In Quicktime X video is too fast. MPlayer OSX Extended plays videos fine, but doesn't support many codecs. I have a Geforce 9800 GTX with qe ci ocl... If theres no solution, then are there any other players for OS X that support a lot of codecs? I don't like Windows so that's not an option. Thanks

• Test disk recovery

  I had a 250GB hard disk having several NTFS partitions. The disk was a dynamic disk (created in windows). Now when I formatted windows (which was in another disk), the dynamic disk is shown as offline. I tried using the testdisk tool to recover the data and created a partial backup. Testdisk is able to list all partitions in the disk. All partitions are shown as type 'D' (Deleted). I want to change the 'D' to 'P' (Primary), 'L'(Logical), 'E' (Extended) appropriately and build a new partition table. If I can write the partition table to disk, the disk will be of 'basic' type and should be readable in all OS. What should be the appropriate partition types? I checked the files on the partitions and no OS was ound. So none of the partitions were bootable. Will randomly selecting P,L,E hurt the data in anyway?
