• Objective-C categories: Can I add a property for a method not in my category?

  I want to use a category to make a method on the original class available as a property as well. Class A: @interface ClassA - (NSString*)foo; @end Class A category @interface ClassA (Properties) - (void)someCategoryMethod; @property (nonatomic, readonly) NSString *foo; @end Now when I do this, it seems to work, but it gives me warnings because I am not synthesizing the property in my category implementation. How do I tell the compiler everything is actually just fine since the original class synthesizes the property for me?

• viewDidLoad never called in Sub-classed UIViewController

  I've run into some trouble with loading a sub-classed UIViewController from a nib. My viewDidLoad function is never called. The super-class has no nib, but the sub-classes each have their own. i.e. @interface SuperClass : UIViewController { } @end @interface SubClass : SuperClass{ } @end @implementation SubClass - (id)initWithNibName:(NSString *)nibNameOrNil bundle:(NSBundle *)nibBundleOrNil { self = [super initWithNibName:nibNameOrNil bundle:nibBundleOrNil]; if (self) { } return self; } - (void)viewDidLoad{ // Never called } The view is loaded from a nib as follows: SubClass *scvc = [[SubClass alloc] initWithNibName:@"SubClass" bundle:nil]; [self.navigationController pushViewController:scvc animated:YES]; [scvc release]; There is a nib file with this name and it has it's file owner's class set properly. viewDidLoad is not called in the child or super. • Correct way to make datasources/resources a deploy-time setting

  I have a web-app that requires two settings: A JDBC datasource A string token I desperately want to be able to deploy one .war to various different containers (jetty,tomcat,gf3 minimum) and configure these settings at application level within the container. My code does this: InitialContext ctx = new InitialContext(); Context envCtx = (javax.naming.Context) ctx.lookup("java:comp/env"); token = (String)envCtx.lookup("token"); ds = (DataSource)envCtx.lookup("jdbc/datasource") Let's assume I've used the glassfish management interface to create two jdbc resources: jdbc/test-datasource and jdbc/live-datasource which connect to different copies of the same schema, on different servers, different credentials etc. Say I want to deploy this to glassfish with and point it at the test datasource, I might have this in my sun-web.xml: ... <resource-ref> <res-ref-name>jdbc/datasource</res-ref-name> <jndi-name>jdbc/test-datasource</jndi-name> </resource-ref> ... but sun-web.xml goes inside my war, right? surely there must be a way to do this through the management interface Am I even trying to do the right thing? Do other containers make this any easier? I'd be particularly interested in how jetty 7 handles this since I use it for development.   I suppose this could go for many OO languages. I'm building my domain objects and am not sure where the best place is for the interfaces & abstract classes. If I have a pets package with various implementations of the APet abstract class: should it live side-by-side with them or in the parent package? How about interfaces? It seems like they almost have to live above the implementations in the parent package, since there could potentially be other subpackages which implement it, while there seems to be a stronger correlation between one abstract class and a subpackage. e.g. com.foo com.foo.IConsumer (interface) com.foo.APet (abstract) com.foo.pets.Dog extends APet implements IConsumer OR com.foo com.foo.IConsumer (interface) com.foo.pets.APet (abstract) com.foo.pets.Dog extends APet implements IConsumer or something else?

I've not really touched on this area before so any help will be appreciated. • Working through exercises in "Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X" - I'm stumped

  I've been working through the exercises in a book recommended here on stackoverflow, however I've run into a problem and after three days of banging my head on the wall, I think I need some help. I'm working through the "Speakline" exercise where we add a TableView to the interface and the table will display the "voices" that you can choose for the text to speech aspect of the program. I am having two problems that I can't seem to get to the bottom of: I get the following error: * Illegal NSTableView data source (). Must implement numberOfRowsInTableView: and tableView:objectValueForTableColumn:row: The tableView that is supposed to display the voices comes up blank I have a feeling that both of these problems are related.   I need to be able to change when I can see session state. I found out about the IRequiresSessionState Marker Interface, but have not been able to figure out how to use it. • C# - calling ext. DLL function containing Delphi "variant record" parameter

  Hello, In external (Delphi-created) DLL I've got the following function that I need to call from C# application. function ReadMsg(handle: longword; var Msg: TRxMsg): longword; stdcall; external 'MyDll.dll' name 'ReadMsg'; The "TRxMsg" type is variant record, defined as follows: TRxMsg = record case TypeMsg: byte of 1: (accept, mask: longword); 2: (SN: string[6]); 3: (rx_rate, tx_rate: word); 4: (rx_status, tx_status, ctl0, ctl1, rflg: byte); end; In order to call the function from C#, I declared auxiliary structure "my9Bytes" containing array of bytes and defined that it should be marshalled as 9 bytes long array (which is exactly the size of the Delphi record). private struct my9Bytes { [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.ByValArray, ArraySubType = UnmanagedType.U1, SizeConst = 9)] public byte[] data; } Then I declared the imported "ReadMsg" function, using the "my9bytes" struct. [DllImport("MyDll.dll")] private static extern uint ReadMsg(uint handle, ref my9Bytes myMsg); I can call the function with no problem... Then I need to create structure corresponding to the original "TRxMsg" variant record and convert my auxiliary "myMsg" array into this structure. I don't know any C# equivalent of Delphi variant array, so I used inheritance and created the following classes. public abstract class TRxMsg { public byte typeMsg; } public class TRxMsgAcceptMask:TRxMsg { public uint accept, mask; //... } public class TRxMsgSN:TRxMsg { public string SN; //... } public class TRxMsgMRate:TRxMsg { public ushort rx_rate, tx_rate; //... } public class TRxMsgStatus:TRxMsg { public byte rx_status, tx_status, ctl0, ctl1, rflg; //... } Finally I create the appropriate object and initialize it with values manually converted from "myMsg" array (I used BitConverter for this). This does work fine, this solution seems to me a little too complicated, and that it should be possible to do this somehow more directly, without the auxiliary "my9bytes" structures or the inheritance and manual converting of individual values. So I'd like to ask you for a suggestions for the best way to do this. Thanks a lot!

  Hi there, I have a program that needs to use sleep. Like really needs to. In lieu of spending ages explaining why, suffice to say that it needs it. Now I'm told to split off my code into a separate thread if it requires sleep so I don't lose interface responsiveness, so I've started learning how to use NSThread. I've created a brand new program that is conceptual so to solve the issue for this example will help me in my real program. Short story is I have a class, it has instance variables and I need a loop with a sleep to be depended on the value of that instance variable. • How to change font size in a pickerview?

  I'm fairly new to iPhone programming and am trying to implement a double-component PickerView. At this point the picker works fine in terms of taking user input, created with Interface Builder. However, I need to change the font size to accommodate the text length in each column. I very much would appreciate any link to a straightforward method to creating a multi-component picker with an adjustable font size. Seems like it is not possible if Interface Builder is used to create the picker. So far I have not found any code links that address this issue in detail. Thanks in advance.

• Speech recognition with Flash or Silverlight

  I'm developing a web user interface to enter some information that is not very complex but needs to be loaded in real time. I think that the application could make use of speech recognition to facilitate the task. Te core of the interface is being built with Javascript and jQuery, but can easily include a flash or silverlight component. I believe that´s probably the way to go... I don't need to recognize everything that the user says, but only a few prerecorded commands. Also, I don't want the user to click on a button to specify the begining and the end of the spoken command. It should be detected live. Is there anything that does this? I would be grateful if anyone tells me about a complete solution, free or commercial, as well as any advice on capturing a sound stream from the mic and process it with flash or sliverlight. • What is the best way to interoperably serialize a message?

  I'm considering message serialization support for spring-integration. This would be useful for various wire level transports to implement guaranteed delivery, but also to allow interoperability with other messaging systems (e.g. through AMQP). The fundamental problem that arises is that a message containing Java object in it's payload and headers should be converted to a byte[] and/or written to a stream. Java's own serialization is clearly not going to cut it because that is not interoperable. My preference would be to create an interface that allows the user to implement the needed logic for all Objects that take part in serialization. Is this a sensible idea and what would the interface look like? Is there a standard interoperable way to serialize Objects that would make sense in this context?

• Why is the C# SerializedAttribute is sealed?

  I was trying to create an attribute that implies [Serializable] but I noticed that this SerializableAttribute class is sealed. In Java it was possible to create an interface (say, MyInterface) that is inherited from Serializable interface and so all the subclasses of MyInterface would also be serializable, even its sub-sub classes would be so. Let's say I am creating an ORM and I want customers to annotate their entity classes as [DatabaseEntity] but in order to make sure that entities are serializable, I also need to ask them to attribute their classes with extra [Serializable] which does not look quite compact and neat. I am wondering why SerializableAttribute class is sealed and why has Inherited=false which implies that subclasses of serializable class will not be serializable unless it is explicitly stated. What motives are behind these design choices?

  I'm currently writing SDK documentation for one of our products, but for obvious reasons I don't want to talk about the essentials of OOP. Does anyone know any good online teaching material that explain (aimed at absolute beginners) concepts such as classes, inheritance, constructors, instances etc.? Preferably urls that are likely to survive for a couple of years to come... It's a DotNET SDK and we're including only VB and C# samples, so C++ or Delphi or Lisp material is not that useful.

• How to solve the performance decay of a VB.NET 1.1 application?

  I have single-thread windows form application written with VB.NET and targeting Framework 1.1. The software communicates with external boards through a serial interface, and it mainly consist of a state machine that run some tests, driven in a loop done with a Timer and an Interval of 50ms. The feedback on the user interface is done through some custom events raised during the tests. The problem that is driving me crazy is that the performance slightly decrease over time, and in particular after 1200/1300 test operations. The memory occupied does not increase over time, it is only the CPU that seems interested by this problem. The strange thing is that, targeting framework 2.0 and using the same identical code, I do not have this problem. I know that is difficult without looking at the code, but do you have suggestions how can I approach the problem?

Unfortunately I don't have this experience, and I would like to keep things simple as it possible and don't rewrite all Django admin interface. Just add this functionality for one Field.   Hello, I have been struggling with getting the versionName for a running application from the PackageInfo Object type. I have constructed a Parcelable Interface with all of the fields associated with the PackageInfo Object type. The primary input for that interface method is a Parcel object. I cannot seem to figure out how to correctly associate these Parcelable, Parcel, and PackageInfo objects. Is there any sample code out there that I can look at? But perhaps too general and feature-rich... multiple inheritance, operator overloading, manual memory management, templates, smart pointers, virtual destructors, legacy frameworks (think MFC), and I could just go on. • What ways are there for cleaning an R environment from objects?

  I know I can use ls() and rm() to see and remove objects that exist in my environment. However, when dealing with "old" .RData file, one needs to sometimes pick an environment a part to find what to keep and what to leave out. What I would like to do, is to have a GUI like interface to allow me to see the objects, sort them (for example, by there size), and remove the ones I don't need (for example, by a check-box interface). Since I imagine such a system is not currently implemented in R, what ways do exist? What do you use for cleaning old .RData files? Thanks, Tal

My first attempt was to use the "Java Request Sampler" The docu says This sampler lets you control a java class that implements the JavaSamplerClient interface. I'm not sure how to get the org.apache.jmeter.protocol.java.sampler.JavaSamplerClient Interface as there is no Maven Artifact nor provided binaries on the JMeter side. Just a JMeter Maven Plugin (which is not what I'm looking for). I could install the needed binaries in my local Maven Repository, I Just don't know where they are available. Wondering if anybody at all is using the "Java Request Sampler" ? P.S. Maybe I should try the JUnit Sampler

• iPhone: how do I set up a clear window-size "blocker view"?

  I feel like this should be obvious to me, but for some reason I can't figure this out. I have a navigation interface with nav bar, tool bar, and primary view. Sometimes the user takes an action that causes a progress indicator to appear in the middle of the view. While the progress indicator (which is a custom UIView) in spinning in the middle, I want no touch input to be allowed to go to any of the underlying interface (main view, nav bar, toolbar, etc). But this doesn't seem trivial. I've tried (and failed) to create a simple view whose only job is to swallow touch input and use it as a window subview-- no dice, it never gets the touch events (and yes, it does have userInteractionEnabled). I've tried to bolt it on as a transparent modal view controller, but those don't seem to ever be transparent. Thoughts? What am I missing? Thanks!

I start with this XAML in the Grid. <RichTextBox Name="TB1" AcceptsReturn="True"> <Paragraph TextAlignment="Center"> Hi everybody </Paragraph> <Paragraph> <InlineUIContainer> <Grid Background="Black"> <Grid.RowDefinitions> <RowDefinition Height="10" /> <RowDefinition Height="10" /> </Grid.RowDefinitions> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="10" /> <ColumnDefinition Width="10" /> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> </Grid> </InlineUIContainer> </Paragraph> <Paragraph> How are you today? </Paragraph> </RichTextBox> Then when I get the XAML out using the Xaml property of the RichTextBox I get this XAML. <Section xml:space="preserve" HasTrailingParagraphBreakOnPaste="False" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"> <Paragraph FontSize="11" FontFamily="Portable User Interface" Foreground="#FF000000" FontWeight="Normal" FontStyle="Normal" FontStretch="Normal" TextAlignment="Center"> <Run Text="Hi everybody" /> </Paragraph> <Paragraph FontSize="11" FontFamily="Portable User Interface" Foreground="#FF000000" FontWeight="Normal" FontStyle="Normal" FontStretch="Normal" TextAlignment="Left"> <Run /> </Paragraph> <Paragraph FontSize="11" FontFamily="Portable User Interface" Foreground="#FF000000" FontWeight="Normal" FontStyle="Normal" FontStretch="Normal" TextAlignment="Left"> <Run Text="How are you today?" /> </Paragraph> </Section> Notice here that the Grid has turned into an empty Run element. Anyone know why this happens?
