• justin.tv jquery get some data

- by Petter Thowsen
I've been reading for hours on this json stuff and the justin.tv API documenation but still unable to get the number of viewers currently viewing my stream. Here's a json script I tried, nothing happens. var url = "http://api.justin.tv/api/stream/list.json"; $.ajax({ url: url, dataType: 'jsonp', data: { channel: "dreamvoid"}, success: function(data) { $('#result').text(JSON.stringify(data.stream_count)); }, jsonp: 'jsonp' });

• Book Review: Inside Windows Communicat?ion Foundation by Justin Smith

- by Sam Abraham
In gearing up for a new major project, I have taken it upon myself to research and review various aspects of our Microsoft stack of choice seeking new creative ways for us to leverage in our upcoming state-of-the-art solution projected to position us ahead of the competition. While I am a big supporter of search engines and online articles as a quick and usually reliable source of information, I have opted in my investigative quest to actually “hit the books”. I have also made it a habit to provide quick reviews for material I go over hoping this can be of help to someone who may be looking for items others may have had success using for reference. I have started a few months ago by investigating better ways to implementing, profiling and troubleshooting SQL Server 2008. My reference of choice was Itzik Ben-Gan et al’s “Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2008” series. While it has been a month since my last book review, this by no means meant that I have been sitting idle. It has been pretty challenging to balance research with the continuous flow of projects and deadlines all while balancing that with my family duties which, of course, always comes first. In this post, I will be providing a quick review of my latest reading: Inside Windows Communication Foundation by Justin Smith. This book has been on my reading list for a very long time and I am proud to have finally tackled it. Justin’s book presents a great coverage of WCF internals. His simple, concise and well-worded style has simplified the relatively complex internals of WCF and made it comprehensible. Justin opted to organize the book into three parts: an introduction to WCF, coverage of the Channel Layer and a look at WCF internals at the ServiceModel layer. Part I introduced the concepts and made the case behind WCF while covering a simplified version of WCF’s message patterns, endpoints and contracts. In Part II, Justin provided a thorough coverage of the internals of Messages, Channels and Channel Managers. Part III concluded this nice reading with coverage of Bindings, Contracts, Dispatchers and Clients. While one would not likely need to extend WCF at that low level of the API, an understanding of the inner-workings of WCF is a must to avoid pitfalls mainly caused by misinformation or erroneous assumptions. Problems can quickly arise in high-traffic hosted solutions, but most can be easily avoided with some minimal time investment and education. My next goal is to pay a closer look at WCF from the programmer’s API perspective now that I have acquired a better understanding of its inner working. Many thanks to the O’Reilly User Group Program and its support of our West Palm Beach Developers’ Group. Stay tuned for more… All the best, --Sam

• QotD: Justin Kestelyn, Editor in Chief of Java Magazine on OpenJDK

- by $utils.escapeXML($entry.author)
Things have changed now. Java SE 7 is available, and Java SE 8 is on the way; Java developer conferences around the world are selling out in short order; Java skills are in high demand by recruiters; and the Java community is reinvigorated thanks to efforts including the OpenJDK project, the Adopt-a-JSR program, and—if I may be so bold—even this publication.Justin Kestelyn, Editor in Chief of the Java Magazine, in the opening 'from the editor' article in the magazine's March/April edition.

• Streaming in justin.tv using Ubuntu 11.10

- by Orlando Gonzales
I used to streaming videos in justin.tv..using Windows 7 and I had no problems. But a month ago, I installed Ubuntu 11.10 (32 bits) in my notebook and now I can't streaming videos. The problem is that when I click on the button "Go Live!", it´s supposed that the screen where I have to clic on "Allow" it should appear, but it doesn't. The web only displays the message: "You can't start until you click allow below.", but the "allow button" doesn't appear, instead of that I only see a black screen. I guessed that it was a problem with the Adobe Flash Player, but I have the lastest version for Linux installed and I have no problems with Youtube. Also, my webcam works without problem in others Ubuntu's applications. I hope you can help me. This are my notebook's features: Toshiba Satellite C645-SP4135L / 3GB RAM / Intel Core i3-2310M 2.10GHz x 4 / HHD:320GB Thanks!! Orlando

• ustream and justin.tv don't work, UTube and bitgravity are fine

- by scottstonehouse
Can anyone explain this? On this laptop, ustream and justin.tv don't work - just get a blank screen. But UTube and bitgravoty work fine (also flash based). 64-bit windows 7 - but I have 64-bit windows 7 on my desktop machine and everything works fine there. Good place to test is here http://live.twit.tv/ where the bitgravity feeds work fine, but ustream and justin.tv don't.

• TFS 2010 Server Name Change

- by PearlFactory
So I thought I would change the name of my machine so that the other devs can find the TFS server easily. TFS 2005 would use the cool cmd line util tfsadminutil.....alas he is now gone HERE Are the steps to complete Edit the web.config and is usually located on default install C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\Application Tier\Web Services\web.config <add key="applicationDatabase" value="Data Source=JUSTIN\SQLI01;Initial Catalog=Tfs_Configuration;Integrated Security=True;" /> Next step is to edit previous Solutions/Projects 1) Open the Solution file i.e ProductApp.sln 2) Edit the SccTeamFoundationServer URL under Global section i.e Change this to new name If you have DB server on same machine ...you will need to go in and remove existing db user account assigned to the tfs DB Remove old [%machine_name%] value i.e Tuned_Dev_PC_12\Justin user from the above DBs No add the new Justin\Justin user account associated with the new machine name to the TFS & Reporing dbs ... dbo or the TFSADMIN & TFSEXEC roles either will do in this case. (or add both ) Now either ReApply user or add New account (remove old account i.e Tuned_Dev_PC_12\justin) If DB permisions are setup correctyly you will get a screen that looks like this If it pauses or gets stuck you need to look back at the adding correct DB Perms to the i.e JUSTIN\Justin user account Also if your project is still complaining about old TFS name 1) Team\Connect new Team Foundation Server 2) Add\Remove TFS 3) Add New TFS Name Once you have connected to the new TFS server Reload your project from TFS..this way it removes a lot of the bugs that hang around in the local project\solution This is similar to a VSS2005 and older fix Cheers ( eta about 60-90 mins so weigh up the the need vs payoff. ) Shutdown restart

UPDATE 3/20/10 I'm running Mac OSX Snow Leopard, this problem is caused by a recent train wreck in which I updated ruby without RVM. Above the Fold: Silverlight: "Creating the Silverlight View Model (MVVM) Control: Calendar Icon" Michael Washington WP7: "United Nations News for Windows Phone 7" Justin Angel Silverlight, WP7/WPF: "CameraPanel: A Parallax Panel for Silverlight, WP7 or WPF" Robby Ingebretsen Shoutouts: Michael Scherotter produced a Silverlight Webcam photo app that he's providing as a free install: A Free Webcam Photo Application in Silverlight From SilverlightCream.com: Creating the Silverlight View Model (MVVM) Control: Calendar Icon Michael Washington has a stunning Calendar Control/Icon up on his blog... walking through how he built it and how you can easily use it in your Silverlight or WP7 app. Strategies for Improving INotifyPropertyChanged in WPF and Silverlight Pete Brown takes a look at INPC and some of the ways this is dealt with to avoid some of the tedius code-reuse errors we all make. CameraPanel: A Parallax Panel for Silverlight, WP7 or WPF Robby Ingebretsen gives up the code for that cool panel he's got on his homepage where the small panels move about seemingly in space. Writing a Windows Phone 7 game? Have a fallback plan Bill Reiss, who has a great WP7 game up - Popper 2 - has a very well-thought-out post up about WP7 'indie' games and the future thereof... great comments from reader/authors as well Automatic template selection – marrying a view to a view model Jordan Knight has the 2nd post of his series on MVVM up... he's talking about it in context of their XamlingCore, but concepts are all good. Rebuilding the PDC 2010 Silverlight Application (Part 5) Mike Taulty's next episode in describing the development of the PDC10 app he wrote is up ... again lots of Blend goodness in this one where he's adding buttons to let the user (us) download whatever is available for the chosen session. United Nations News for Windows Phone 7 In a munificent gesture, Justin Angel not only made his United Nation News app free on the marketplace, but he's posted the source to CodePlex! Justin had sent me a XAP a couple weeks ago, but for some reason, I can no longer sideload so wasn't able to try it until now... too cool, Justin! What I Learned In WP7 – Issue #6 Jeff Blankenburg has his latest "What I learned in WP7" tip up ... and this is one about the marketplace written by someone that's been there and back a few times... • Craftsmanship Tour: Day 3 & 4 8th Light

- by Liam McLennan
Thursday morning the Illinois public transport system came through for me again. I took the Metra train north from Union Station (which was seething with inbound commuters) to Prairie Crossing (Libertyville). At Prairie Crossing I met Paul and Justin from 8th Light and then Justin drove us to the office. The 8th Light office is in an small business park, in a semi-rural area, surrounded by ponds. Upstairs there are two spacious, open areas for developers. At one end of the floor is Doug Bradbury’s walk-and-code station; a treadmill with a desk and computer so that a developer can get exercise at work. At the other end of the floor is a hammock. This irregular office furniture is indicative of the 8th Light philosophy, to pursue excellence without being limited by conventional wisdom. 8th Light have a wall covered in posters, each illustrating one person’s software craftsmanship journey. The posters are a fascinating visualisation of the similarities and differences between each of our progressions. The first thing I did Thursday morning was to create my own poster and add it to the wall. Over two days at 8th Light I did some pairing with the 8th Lighters and we shared thoughts on software development. I am not accustomed to such a progressive and enlightened environment and I found the experience inspirational. At 8th Light TDD, clean code, pairing and kaizen are deeply ingrained in the culture. Friday, during lunch, 8th Light hosted a ‘lunch and learn’ event. Paul Pagel lead us through a coding exercise using micro-pomodori. We worked in pairs, focusing on the pedagogy of pair programming and TDD. After lunch I recorded this interview with Paul Pagel and Justin Martin. We discussed 8th light, craftsmanship, apprenticeships and the limelight framework. Interview with Paul Pagel and Justin Martin My time at Didit, Obtiva and 8th Light has convinced me that I need to give up some of my independence and go back to working in a team. Craftsmen advance their skills by learning from each other, and I can’t do that working at home by myself. The challenge is finding the right team, and becoming a part of it.

• Ubuntu 12.10 MBR not loading from dual boot selector

- by Justin Holmes
Since I am new to the forums here I cannot post pictures, but hopefully this link to my error screen will work. Error when selecting to boot the Ubuntu mbr Basically no matter what I do, windows boot manager wants to load windows and windows only. I tried running from my hard drive and also from a USB drive that had live installed. Both times I ended up with this message. I am running windows 7 with all the newest updates, on a Samsung series 7 Laptop. I have had many dual boot machines in the past and never seen this issue. I even had a dual booting windows 7 machine a few months ago and had no issues at all. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! Justin

• "Not enough memory" error when running Peachtree Accounting 2010 with Logmein

- by Justin Bowers
I setup one of my clients with a Logmein Pro account recently and everything has been running fine so far. Today, however, my client received an error when they were logged into their work computer remotely and tried to run a report from Peachtree Accounting 2010. The error states: "Not enough memory to run" and she can't print the report. I looked online and found another user that had this same problem with Peachtree 2010 when connected via Logmein here. The error doesn't happen if the user runs the report while sitting at her work computer, but it always happens when connected via Logmein. I know most of you will push it off as just a Logmein issue, which I'm sure it is - but I would like any constructive input from anyone else who may have had the same or similar problem. Thanks, Justin

• TV Playout software for Windows Server without DirectX?

- by Joel Kennedy
I am trying to find a TV Playout software (video mixer) for Windows Server 2003/2008 which can stream via rtmp to Justin.tv without the need for DirectX. The reason for this is that the server which would run the TV Playout software is hosted/virtualized via an ESXi server, and does not have DirectX support. Even if there was software that could just stream a playlist of video files to Justin.tv that would be a start. Thanks

• Load balance incoming traffic

- by justin
Dear All Please I have the following scenario. 3 servers voip / mail / terminal one load balancing router 2 internet connections (static ip`s) My concern is to load balance incoming traffic since the outgoing traffic is being taking care by the load balancing router. For instance all offices connect to the mail server via the internet same for voip and terminal services. The mail and voip clients are set up with one of the static ip`s and the router forwards the request to the appropriate server. But obviously like this there is no fail over nor load balancing cause all requests are being directed to one internet connection. Anyone has a suggestion was thing of a dns server, does this make sens ? or maybe a hosted option ? Thanks Justin

• jQuery - Dynamically adding validation rule to multiple textboxes

- by Justin
Hey, I'm trying to add a validation rule to multiple textboxes dynamically. Here's the js: //validate form. $("#SubmitForm").validate(); $("input[id*=Hours]").rules("add", { number: true, messages: { number: "Please enter a valid Hours" } }); This applies the rule to the very first textbox on the page with "Hours" in the id but then it doesn't apply it to any of the other ones. Anyone know what's wrong here? Thanks, Justin
