• dpkg unsatisfied dependencies, now apt-get wants to remove whole system

  firstly, I'm sorry for my terminal output in portuguese, but I guess it is still understandable. I am using Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 and I tried to update the GNOME Online Accounts packages by downloading the following .deb files from packages.ubuntu.com for the Ubuntu 14.10 version: libgoa-backend-1.0-dev_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb libgoa-backend-1.0-1_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb libgoa-1.0-dev_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb libgoa-1.0-0b_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb gnome-online-accounts_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb gir1.2-goa-1.0_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb After downloading them in the same folder, I run the command sudo dpkg -i *.deb, but it didn't install the packages, instead it showed errors due to packages which them depend doesn't meet the required version (and Ubuntu have no way to install them since they are not in this version's repositories). So now every time I want to install anything through apt-get, Ubuntu tells me to run apt-get -f install to fix the errors.   I must transform some XML data into a paginated list of fields. Here is an example. • Php template caching design

  Hello to all, I want to include caching in my app design. Caching templates for starters. The design I have used so far is very modular. I have created an ORM implementation for all my tables and each table is represented by the corresponding class. All the requests are handled by one controller which routes them to the appropriate webmethod functions. I am using a template class for handling UI parts. What I have in mind for caching includes the implementation of a separate Cache class for handling caching with the flexibility to either store in files, apc or memcache. Right now I am testing with file caching. Some thoughts Should I include the logic of checking for cached versions in the Template class or in the webmethods which handle the incoming requests and which eventually call the Template class. In the first case, things are pretty simple as I will not have to change anything more than pass the template class an extra argument (whether to load from cache or not). In the second case however, I am thinking of checking for a cached version immediately in the webmethod and if found return it. This will save all the processing done until the logic reaches the template (first case senario). Both senarios however, rely on an accurate mechanism of invalidating caches, which brings as to Invalidating caches As I see it (and you can add your input freely) a template cached file, becomes invalidate if: a. the expiration set, is reached. b. the template file itself is updated (ie by the developer when adding a new line) c. the webmethod that handles the request changes (ie the developer adds/deletes something in the code) d. content coming from the db and ending in the template file is modified I am thinking of storing a json encoded array inside the cached file. The first value will be the expiration timestamp of the cache. The second value will be the modification time of the php file with the code handling the request (to cope with option c above) The third will be the content itself The validation process I am considering, according to the above senarios, is: a. If the expiration of the cached file (stored in the array) is reached, delete the cache file b. if the cached file's mod time is smaller than the template's skeleton file mod time, delete the cached file c. if the mod time of the php file is greated than the one stored in the cache, delete the cached file. d. This is tricky. In the ORM implementation I ahve added event handlers (which fire when adding, updating, deleting objects). I could delete the cache file every time an object thatprovides content to the template, is modified. The problem is how to keep track which cached files correpond to each schema object. Take this example, a user has his shortprofile page and a full profile page (2 templates) These templates can be cached. Now, every time the user modifies his profile, the event handler would need to know which templates or cached files correspond to the User, so that these files can be deleted. I could store them in the db but I am looking for a beter approach

• IE8 Developer Tools won't open

  Just installed IE8 on WinXP. Trying to use the Dev Tools but, clicking on the menu item or hitting F12 doesn't do anything. I can see the option in the tools menu, just can't use it. I've checked to make sure it wasn't opening minimized or off screen and I've checked the registry settings used to disable them. Those registry keys don't even exists. Suggestions? I was going to reinstall, but, thought I'd check here first.

• MMC Snapin development: 'MMC not responding' - Is there a timeout that can be set for debugging?

  So I'm writing a snapin for MMC 3. Quite often I have the debugger attached and I'm stepping through some code. MMC has some kind of a fail safe for misbehaving snapins that automatically unloads them after a timeout. The message is 'This snap-in is not responding'. After that MMC can behave as though your snap-in has been unloaded. fair enough, it's not responding because I'm stepping through the debugger. However, the timeout is very small for development. Does anyone know of a way of increasing the timeout? I googled and couldn't find anything. Checking the MMC registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC and couldn't see anything there. I also checked the snap-in registry location under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\SnapIns. No luck. I feel like there must be a way of increasing the timeout as this is something the devs as Microsoft must have encountered this problem.

  I have a Copy Hook Handler shell extension that I'm trying to install on Windows 7 64-bit. The shell extension DLL is compiled in two separate versions for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. The DLL implements DLLRegisterServer which adds the necessary registry entries. After adding the registry entries, it calls the following line of code to nofity the Windows shell: SHChangeNotify(SHCNE_ASSOCCHANGED, SHCNF_IDLIST, NULL, NULL); Everything works great on Windows7 32-bit. The shell recognizes the extension immediately. On 64-bit, the shell extension is only recognized after the shell is restarted. Is there anything I can do to cause the extension to be recognized without restarting the 64-bit shell?

  I wanted to use a python equivalent to piping some shell commands in perl. Something like the python version of open(PIPE, "command |"). I go to the subprocess module and try this: p = subprocess.Popen("zgrep thingiwant largefile", shell=True, stdout=subprocess.PIPE) This works for reading the output the same way I would in perl, but it doesn't clean itself up. When I exit the interpreter, I get grep: writing output: Broken pipe spewed all over stderr a few million times. I guess I had naively hoped all this would be taken care of for me, but that's not true. Calling terminate or kill on p doesn't seem to help. Look at the process table, I see that this kills the /bin/sh process, but leaves the child gzip in place to complain about the broken pipe. What's the right way to do this?

  Could anyone advise how to programmatically change the default Windows XP code page (I'm doing this from Delphi)? (This would be the equivalent of going into Control Panel - Regional Settings - Language for non-Unicode applications). In this case, I want to switch to Chinese (PRC) and so am writing to the following registry strings: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage\ ACP=936 MACCP=10008 OEMCP=936 (Which is exactly what changing the non-Unicode codepage drop down in Control Panel does). There must be another setting which I need to change - and I'd prefer to use a Win API call (if available) rather than writing to the registry myself. I've also tried setting HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\Language\ Default=0804 (Chinese PRC) to no avail. I don't want to change the 'locale' per se as this will also change time / date settings, separators, etc. etc. This is because I'm using an ANSI application that needs to render Chinese characters, and I'm writing a tool to automatically switch the system show the characters (while leaving other aspects of the UI intact).   Greetings, I'm working on a game project that uses a 3D variant of hexagonal tile maps. Tiles are actually cubes, not hexes, but are laid out just like hexes (because a square can be turned to a cube to extrapolate from 2D to 3D, but there is no 3D version of a hex). Rather than a verbose description, here goes an example of a 4x4x4 map: (I have highlighted an arbitrary tile (green) and its adjacent tiles (yellow) to help describe how the whole thing is supposed to work; but the adjacency functions are not the issue, that's already solved.) I have a struct type to represent tiles, and maps are represented as a 3D array of tiles (wrapped in a Map class to add some utility methods, but that's not very relevant). Each tile is supposed to represent a perfectly cubic space, and they are all exactly the same size. Also, the offset between adjacent "rows" is exactly half the size of a tile. That's enough context; my question is: Given the coordinates of two points A and B, how can I generate a list of the tiles (or, rather, their coordinates) that a straight line between A and B would cross? That would later be used for a variety of purposes, such as determining Line-of-sight, charge path legality, and so on. BTW, this may be useful: my maps use the (0,0,0) as a reference position. The 'jagging' of the map can be defined as offsetting each tile ((y+z) mod 2) * tileSize/2.0 to the right from the position it'd have on a "sane" cartesian system. For the non-jagged rows, that yields 0; for rows where (y+z) mod 2 is 1, it yields 0.5 tiles. I'm working on C#4 targeting the .Net Framework 4.0; but I don't really need specific code, just the algorithm to solve the weird geometric/mathematical problem. I have been trying for several days to solve this at no avail; and trying to draw the whole thing on paper to "visualize" it didn't help either :( . Thanks in advance for any answer

I have a form that posts to a details page (/Summary/Details), which loads in some data from SQL. I then have a button that opens a dialog box in JQuery, which populates the dialog from a request to (/Operator/Modify). On the dialog box, the form has a combo box and an OK button that lets the user change the operator's name. Upon clicking OK, the form is posted to (/Operator/Modify) and sent through the service and repository layers of my program and updates the record in the database. Then, the RedirectToAction is called to send the user back to the details page (/Summary/Details) where there is a call to pull the data from SQL again, updating the details view. Everything works great, except the details view does not show the new operator that was selected. I can step through the code and see the DCSDataContext class being accessed to update the operator (which does actually change the database record), but when the DCSDataContext is accessed to reload the details objects, it pulls in the old value. I'm guessing that StructureMap is causing not only the DCSDataContext class but also the data to be cached? I have also tried adding the following to the Global.asax, but it just ends up crashing the program telling me the DCSDataContext has been disposed... • Good Email Notification Sending Service

  I need to send a few but important email notifications to individual users. For instance, when they register their software I send them a confirmation email. Right now, I am using 'sendmail' from my Perl CGI script to do the job. Most of my automated email are lost or marked as junk. Unfortunately, I am using shared hosting services and not a very good control over the SPF and SenderID DNS records. Even more bad, some other user of that shared server has been infected with some kind of SPAM-BOT and the IP is now blacklisted until further notice! Anyway I just don't want to deal with this kind of headache. I am looking for an online service that I will be able to subscribe to and pay something like 0.10$ per email I send with no monthly fees. I just need and API to be able to send the email from PHP or Perl code I will have to write. I have been looking around at all those "Email Sending Services" and they are all wrapped around creating campains and managing lists for bulk email marketing distribution and newsletters. But remember, I want to send an email notification to a "single" recipient. So far, I have look at MailChimp, SocketLabs, iContact, ConstantContact, StreamSend and so many others to no avail. I have seen one comment at Hackers News saying that MailChimp have an API for transactional e-mails (i.e. ad-hoc ones to welcome a user for example). So you're not just restricted to using them for bulk emails But I cannot find this in the API documentation supplied, maybe this was removed. Any suggestions out there. Here is a summary of my requirements: Allows ad hoc sending of email to a single recipient. Throughput may well be throttle I don't care, i am sending like 2-5 emails a day. API available in PHP or Perl to connect to that web service. Ideally I can send HTML formatted emails, otherwise I will live with text only. Solution not too expensive, between 0.01$ and 0.25$ per email would be acceptable. No recurring monthly fees.

• Converting Milliseconds to Timecode

  I have an audio project I'm working on using BASS from Un4seen. This library uses BYTES mainly but I have a conversion in place that let's me show the current position of the song in Milliseconds. Knowing that MS = Samples * 1000 / SampleRate and that Samples = Bytes * 8 / Bits / Channels So here's my main issue and it's fairly simple... I have a function in my project that converts the Milliseconds to TimeCode in Mins:Secs:Milliseconds. Public Function ConvertMStoTimeCode(ByVal lngCurrentMSTimeValue As Long) ConvertMStoTimeCode = CheckForLeadingZero(Fix(lngCurrentMSTimeValue / 1000 / 60)) & ":" & _ CheckForLeadingZero(Int((lngCurrentMSTimeValue / 1000) Mod 60)) & ":" & _ CheckForLeadingZero(Int((lngCurrentMSTimeValue / 10) Mod 100)) End Function Now the issue comes within the Seconds calculation. Anytime the MS calculation is over .5 the seconds place rounds up to the next second. So 1.5 seconds actually prints as 2.5 seconds. I know for sure that using the Int conversion causes a round down and I know my math is correct as I've checked in a calculator 100 times. I can't figure out why the number is rounding up. Any suggestions?

• IE8 Developer Tools won't open

  Just installed IE8 on WinXP. Trying to use the Dev Tools but, clicking on the menu item or hitting F12 doesn't do anything. I can see the option in the tools menu, just can't use it. I've checked to make sure it wasn't opening minimized or off screen and I've checked the registry settings used to disable them. Those registry keys don't even exists. Suggestions? I was going to reinstall, but, thought I'd check here first.

• I never really understood: what is CGI?

  CGI is a Comman Gateway Interface. As the name says, it is a "common" gateway interface for everything. It is so trivial and naive from the name. I feel that I understood this and I felt this every time I encountered this word. But frankly, I didn't. I'm still confused. I am a PHP programmer. I did lot of web development. user (client) request for page --- webserver(-embedded PHP interpreter) ---- Server side(PHP) Script --- MySQL Server. Now say my PHP Script can fetch results from MySQL Server && MATLAB Server && Some other server. So, now PHP Script is the CGI? because its interface for the between webserver & All other servers? I don't know. Sometimes they call CGI, a technology & othertimes they call CGI a program or someother server. What exactly is CGI? Whats the big deal with /cgi-bin/*.cgi? Whats up with this? I don't know what is this cgi-bin directory on the server for. I don't know why they have *.cgi extensions. Why does Perl always comes in the way. CGI & Perl (language). I also don't know whats up with these two. Almost all the time I keep hearing these two in combination "CGI & Perl". This book is another great example CGI Programming with Perl Why not "CGI Programming with PHP/JSP/ASP". I never saw such things. CGI Programming in C this confuses me a lot. in C?? Seriously?? I don't know what to say. I"m just confused. "in C"?? This changes everything. Program needs to be compiled and executed. This entirely changes my view of web programming. When do I compile? How does the program gets executed (because it will be a machine code, so it must execute as a independent process). How does it communicate with the web server? IPC? and interfacing with all the servers (in my example MATLAB & MySQL) using socket programming? I'm lost!! They say that CGI is depreciated. Its no more in use. Is it so? What is its latest update? Once, I ran into a situation where I had to give HTTP PUT request access to web server (Apache HTTPD). Its a long back. So, as far as I remember this is what I did: Edited the configuration file of Apache HTTPD to tell webserver to pass all HTTP PUT requests to some put.php ( I had to write this PHP script) Implement put.php to handle the request (save the file to the location mentioned) People said that I wrote a CGI Script. Seriously, I didn't have clue what they were talking about. Did I really write CGI Script? I hope you understood what my confusion is. (Because I myself don't know where I'm confused). I request you guys to keep your answer as simple as possible. I really can't understand any fancy technical terminology. At least not in this case. EDIT: I found this amazing tutorial "CGI Programming Is Simple!" - CGI Tutorial Which explains the concepts in simplest possible way. I've only have one complaint about this tutorial. Just to make what ever he explained complete he should have shown the C code he used for generating response for those GET / POST requests.
