  • Trying to migrate Windows 7 install of Adobe CS5 to Ubuntu 12.04 with Wine - 'Internal errors - invalid paramters received"

    I have Adobe CS5 installed and running on the Windows 7 side of my machine. Since I'd hate to boot up into Windows just to use Photoshop, I'm trying to get it in Ubuntu 12.04. Tutorials I found suggested that the easiest way to have it in Ubuntu was to install Wine, and copy my Windows installation over. Here are the exact steps I've done up to this point. From Windows, exported the registry key for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Adobe to the desktop. Changed to Ubuntu, downloaded Wine from Software Center Terminal: $ sudo apt-get install wine ttf-mscorefonts-installer $ winecfg $ wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks $ sh winetricks msxml6 gdiplus gecko vcrun2005sp1 vcrun2008 msxml3 atmlib Moved registry export to home folder. Copied "Program Files (x86)\Adobe" to "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Adobe" "Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe" to "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Common Files/Adobe" "Documents and Settings\Don\Application Data\Adobe" to "~/.wine/drive_c/users/don/Application Data/Adobe" "Windows\System32\odbcint.dll" to "~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/odbcint.dll" ,and lastly "Windows\System32\odbc32.dll" to "~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/odbc32.dll". From Terminal, $ wine regedit adobe.reg. Right clicked on Photoshop.exe and selected "Open with Wine". Got the message "Wine Program Crash, Internal errors - invalid parameters received." So to restate my question, How can I get Photoshop running in Ubuntu 12.04? I'm not sold on doing it in this specific way, I just want to use Photoshop without having to reboot.     I'm running out of patience with MS VisualStudio 2010: I'm working on a solution containing ~50 C++ projects. When using the editor, I experience a lag of 1 - 2 seconds whenever I move the cursor to a different line, or when I move to a different window, or generally when the editor losses and gains focus. I went through a whole series of optimizations, to no avail: installed all hotfixes for VS2010 disabled all add-ins and extensions disabled Intellisense deleted all temporary files created by VS2010 disabled hardware acceleration unloaded all but 15 projects disabled tracking changes closed all but one window and so on. This is on a Dual Core machine with SSD harddrive (verified throughput 100MB/s), enough free space on HD, Windows 7 Pro 32-bit with 3GB of RAM and most of it still free. Whenever I type a letter, CPU usage of devenv.exe goes to 50 - 90% in process monitor for 1 - 2 seconds before returning to 5%. I used Process Explorer to analyze registry and file system access, and I only notice frequent accesses to the .sln file (which is quiet small), and a few registry reads, but nothing that would raise a red flag. I don't have this problem with solutions containing less projects, so I'm inclined to think that it's related to the number of projects. For your information, the entire solution has been migrated over the years from VS2005 to VS2008 to now VS2010. Does anyone have any ideas what else I could do to resume work on this project, other than returning to VS2008?

  • What exactly do I have to pay attention for when choosing Windows Hosting Provider?

    This is my first time choosing a hosting company. It is for a web site made in asp.net mvc3. So I was thinking choosing a provider would be easy since I found this page http://www.microsoft.com/web/Hosting/Home which contains hosting offers. Now hours later, I am still searching. The reason is that as soon as I start investigating about particular company, something stands out that I do not like. Here are some examples what I noticed when checking various companies in more detail: Company "about us" page is lacking in information about their company. Few of them had just general description what they do and nothing else, while some others had information like company name but had no address. Checking company name in Business Registry Searches gave no results. Two of the companies I checked had both company name and address but I was unable to find them in the registry. Putting company domain into Google gave mostly results from that domain or web hosting review sites but not much else. I am assuming that good companies should have search results from other sites too. Low Alexa Traffic Rank. There was one company which had a site that looked very professional but their alexa traffic ranking was like 2 million. Are there any other factors I should pay attention to when choosing a hosting company? Do I have legitimate concerns or am I just too paranoid?

I have been listening to a lot of programming podcasts and taking some time to learn some new languages that are being considered upcoming, and important. I'm not necessarily talking about BrainFuck, but which language would you consider to be one that challenges the common programming paradigms? For me, I did some functional and logic (ex. Prolog) programming in the 90s, so can't say that I find anything special there. I am far from being an expert in it, but even today the most mind-bending programming language for me is Perl. Not because "Hello World" is hard to implement but rather there is so much lexical flexibility that some of the hardest solutions can be decomposed so poetically that I have to walk outside away from my terminal to clear my head. I'm not saying I'd likely sell a commercial software implementation, just that there is a distinct reason Perl is so (in)famous. Just look at the basic list of books on it. So, what is your mind-bending language that promotes your better programming and practices?

  • How to recover broken dpkg after lucid-bleed ppa-purge?

    Did a ppa-purge of lucid-bleed and dpkg didn't downgrade properly and now it is broken. dpkg: PreDepends: tar (>= 1.23) but 1.22-2ubuntu1 is to be installed What scares me is when simulating the removal of dpkg I get: Removing this package may render the system unusable. Are you sure you want to do that? and then the list of packages which depend on it, which will also be removed, is obviously very long. Is it safe for me to remove dpkg just to reinstall it? How would I ensure the list of packages which were also removed are then reinstalled? Will forcing the version of dpkg help? (FYI: simulating a forced version brings up a much smaller list of applications which will also be removed). Any other suggestions?   • 64kb limit on the size of MSMQ Multicast Messages

    When Windows 2003 came out, Microsoft introduced the ability to broadcast messages to any machines that were listening back. All you had to do was send out a message on a particular port and IP address and any client that had set up a Multicast queue with matching port and IP address would get a copy. Since its introduction, there have been a couple of security vulnerabilities that needed to be removed: Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-052 Vulnerability in Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) Could Allow Remote Code Execution (919007) Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-036 Vulnerabilities in Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) could allow denial of service (950762) The second of these, MS08-036, was resolved through an undocumented change in functionality. Basically, a limit of 64kb was put on the maximum size of a message that could be broadcast using the Multicast method. Obviously this has caused a few problems for any existing MSMQ Multicast applications that expected to be able to send larger messages. A hotfix has been developed to resolve this problem. 961605 FIX: Multicast messages larger than 64 kilobytes (KB) are not delivered as expected by using Message Queuing 3.0 after security update MS08-036 is installed A registry change is required: Open the registry with Regedit Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RMCAST\Parameters\ Create a DWord called MaxpacketSize Set the value to the desired number of bytes. You can set it to a value between zero and 4MB. If you specify anything above 4MB, it will default to 64K. A reboot is needed after adding this value.

  • Why is Python used for high-performance/scientific computing (but Ruby isn't)?

    There's a quote from a PyCon 2011 talk that goes: At least in our shop (Argonne National Laboratory) we have three accepted languages for scientific computing. In this order they are C/C++, Fortran in all its dialects, and Python. You’ll notice the absolute and total lack of Ruby, Perl, Java. It was in the more general context of high-performance computing. Granted the quote is only from one shop, but another question about languages for HPC, also lists Python as one to learn (and not Ruby). Now, I can understand C/C++ and Fortran being used in that problem-space (and Perl/Java not being used). But I'm surprised that there would be a major difference in Python and Ruby use for HPC, given that they are fairly similar. (Note - I'm a fan of Python, but have nothing against Ruby). Is there some specific reason why the one language took off? Is it about the libraries available? Some specific language features? The community? Or maybe just historical contigency, and it could have gone the other way?

  • A plugin is preventing Eclipse from starting up

    It just gives me a blank window, and the splash screen doesn't go away. I tried running it in a terminal, turns out it's a problematic plugin. Is there a way to disable that plugin without the GUI?     I have a custom module and I have a working grid to menage the module items in the admin. My module file structore is : app\code\local\G4R\GroupSales\Block\Adminhtml\Groupsale\ I want to add an edit form so I can view and edit each item in the grid.   • OSB/OSR/OER in One Domain - QName violates loader constraints

    For demos, testing and prototyping, I wanted a single domain which contained three servers:OSB - Oracle Service BusOSR - Oracle Service RegistryOER - Oracle Enterprise Repository These three can work together to help with service governance in an enterprise.  When building out the domain, I found errors in the OSR server due to some conflicting classes from the OSB.  This wouldn't be an issue if each server was given a unique classpath setting with the node manager, but I was having the node manager use the standard startup scripts.     While putting together some examples of the Solaris 11 Automated Installer (AI), I managed to really mess up my system, to the point where AI was completely unusable. This was my fault as a combination of unfortunate incidents left some remnants that were causing problems, so I tried to clean things up. Unsuccessfully. Perhaps that was a bad idea (OK, it was a terrible idea), but this is Solaris 11 and there are a few more tricks in the sysadmin toolbox. Here's what I did. # rm -rf /install/* # rm -rf /var/ai # installadm create-service -n solaris11-x86 --imagepath /install/solaris11-x86 \ -s [email protected] Warning: Service svc:/network/dns/multicast:default is not online. Installation services will not be advertised via multicast DNS. Then comes an oops..... setup-service[168]: cd: /var/ai//service/.conf-templ: [No such file or directory] ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This is where you generally say a few things to yourself, and then promise to quit deleting configuration files and directories when you don't know what you are doing. Then you recall that the new Solaris 11 packaging system has some ability to correct common mistakes (like the one I just made).   • Persisting settings without using Options dialog in Visual Studio

Visual Studio options has many advantages in automatically persisting user options for you. However, during our latest Team Rooms extension development, we decided to provide our users; ability to use our preferences directly from Team Explorer. The main reason was that we had only one simple option for user and we thought it is cumbersome for user to go to Tools –> Options dialog to change this. Another reason was, we wanted to highlight this setting to user as soon as he is using our extension.   So if you are in such a scenario where you do not want to use VS options window, but still would like to persist the settings, this post will guide you through. Visual Studio SDK provides two ways to persist settings in your extensions. One is using DialogPage as shown in my previous post. Another way is to use by implementing IProfileManager interface which I will explain in this post. Please note that the class implementing IProfileManager should be independent class. This is because, VS instantiates this class during Tools –> Import and Export Settings. IProfileManager provides 2 different sets of methods (total 4 methods) to persist the settings. They are LoadSettingsFromXml and SaveSettingsToXml – Implement these methods to persist settings to disk from VS settings storage. The VS will persist your settings along with other options to disk. LoadSettingsFromStorage and SaveSettingsToStorage – Implement these methods to persist settings to local storage, usually it be registry. VS calls LoadSettingsFromStorage method when it is initializing the package too. We are going to use the 2nd set of methods for this example. First, we are creating a separate class file called UserOptions.cs. Please note that, we also need to implement IComponent, which can be done by inheriting Component along with IProfileManager. The Package class provides UserRegistryRoot (which is HKCU\Microsoft\VisualStudio\12.0 for VS2013) property which can be used to create and read the registry keys. So basically, in the methods above, I am checking if the registry key exists already and if not, I simply create it. Also, in case there is an exception I return the default values. If the key already exists, I update the value. Also, note that you need to make sure that you close the key while exiting from the method. Very simple right? Accessing and settings is simple too. We just need to use the exposed property. UserOptions.TrayNotifications = true; UserOptions.SaveSettingsToStorage(); Reading settings is as simple as reading a property. UserOptions.LoadSettingsFromStorage(); var trayNotifications = UserOptions.TrayNotifications; Lastly, the most important step. We need to tell Visual Studio shell that our package exposes options using the UserOptions class. For this we need to decorate our package class with ProvideProfile attribute as below.   • Token based Authentication for WCF HTTP/REST Services: Authentication

    This post shows some of the implementation techniques for adding token and claims based security to HTTP/REST services written with WCF. For the theoretical background, see my previous post. Disclaimer The framework I am using/building here is not the only possible approach to tackle the problem. Based on customer feedback and requirements the code has gone through several iterations to a point where we think it is ready to handle most of the situations. Goals and requirements The framework should be able to handle typical scenarios like username/password based authentication, as well as token based authentication The framework should allow adding new supported token types Should work with WCF web programming model either self-host or IIS hosted Service code can rely on an IClaimsPrincipal on Thread.CurrentPrincipal that describes the client using claims-based identity Implementation overview In WCF the main extensibility point for this kind of security work is the ServiceAuthorizationManager. It gets invoked early enough in the pipeline, has access to the HTTP protocol details of the incoming request and can set Thread.CurrentPrincipal. The job of the SAM is simple: Check the Authorization header of the incoming HTTP request Check if a “registered” token (more on that later) is present If yes, validate the token using a security token handler, create the claims principal (including claims transformation) and set Thread.CurrentPrincipal If no, set an anonymous principal on Thread.CurrentPrincipal. By default, anonymous principals are denied access – so the request ends here with a 401 (more on that later). To wire up the custom authorization manager you need a custom service host – which in turn needs a custom service host factory. The full object model looks like this: Token handling A nice piece of existing WIF infrastructure are security token handlers. Their job is to serialize a received security token into a CLR representation, validate the token and turn the token into claims. The way this works with WS-Security based services is that WIF passes the name/namespace of the incoming token to WIF’s security token handler collection. This in turn finds out which token handler can deal with the token and returns the right instances. For HTTP based services we can do something very similar. The scheme on the Authorization header gives the service a hint how to deal with an incoming token. So the only missing link is a way to associate a token handler (or multiple token handlers) with a scheme and we are (almost) done. WIF already includes token handler for a variety of tokens like username/password or SAML 1.1/2.0. The accompanying sample has a implementation for a Simple Web Token (SWT) token handler, and as soon as JSON Web Token are ready, simply adding a corresponding token handler will add support for this token type, too. All supported schemes/token types are organized in a WebSecurityTokenHandlerCollectionManager and passed into the host factory/host/authorization manager. Adding support for basic authentication against a membership provider would e.g. look like this (in global.asax): var manager = new WebSecurityTokenHandlerCollectionManager(); manager.AddBasicAuthenticationHandler((username, password) => Membership.ValidateUser(username, password));   Adding support for Simple Web Tokens with a scheme of Bearer (the current OAuth2 scheme) requires passing in a issuer, audience and signature verification key: manager.AddSimpleWebTokenHandler(     "Bearer",     "http://identityserver.thinktecture.com/trust/initial",     "https://roadie/webservicesecurity/rest/",     "WFD7i8XRHsrUPEdwSisdHoHy08W3lM16Bk6SCT8ht6A="); In some situations, SAML token may be used as well. This means that the standard WIF claims transformation logic can be used here as well. And even better, can be also shared with e.g. a “surrounding” web application. Error handling A WCF error handler takes care of turning “access denied” faults into 401 status codes and a message inspector adds the registered authentication schemes to the outgoing WWW-Authenticate header when a 401 occurs.
