I saw the intel-microcode in the ubuntu repositories and was wondering if it was worth installing on my Yorkfield-6M based system. If so, what are the benefits from this package?
There are tools that can read iPhone backup files, but only when they are not encrypted.
Is there a way to remove the encryption on these files (with knowledge of the password, of course), so that they can be read?
Or better yet, is there a tool that does support encrypted files?
I've just been listening to The Complete John Cage Edition Volume 18: The Choral Works 1 but the track listing is wrong. (N.B. I'm not a Cage genius, but a new twitter friend is and pointed this out to me). The CD comes from a label called Mode and the track listing is also wrong on the CD so it's not just a Spotify DB thing. What database do Spotify use for their track listings and what is the correct process for getting it corrected when there is an error?
I just want to move dirs. I looked successively at mv, cp and rsync, since each tool in turn didn't seem to have the option to remove directories from source after copying them.
For instance, mv needs files, not dirs, when src and dst are on different devices:
"inter-device move failed: src to dst; unable to remove target: Is a directory"
Perhaps the simplest way to do this is by using an additional deletion cmd, although I'd prefer not to use it, since that increases risk of data loss.
What's the best way to keep packages up-to-date (ie with the last security fixes) without worried about major version update ?
For instance, apache2 for squeezeis is 2.2.16 (https://packages.debian.org/source/squeeze/apache2)
However, last apache2 version for the 2.2.x branch is 2.2.27
Test repository can't be used since they use the 2.4.x versions and I'd like to stick on the 2.2.x (to avoid migration issues)
How would you handle this situation and how can I update to 2.2.27 ?
Working on a new project, and need some documentation advice. I need to be able to document ~ 400 client sites to track assets, setup, hardware layout, network layout, etc. We want to have photos, maps, etc. wherever possible. We need this for a call center environment.
Has anyone found any off the shelf software that performs this functionality, or are we on our own to develop the tools that we require?
I have a print server running windows server 2008 that has about 50 printers on it. In windows XP, I was able to connect to the server using the UNC name and make a shortcut to the "printers and faxes" folder. (For the record, I know that it really isn't a folder, but that's outside the scope of this question.)
I have recently switched to windows 7 and I find that the jump lists are really useful. One of the things I want to do is make it easy to connect to that server's "printers and faxes" folder. I would like to use something like a shortcut that I can open and go immediately to that location. The problem is that windows 7 doesn't have a way to create a shortcut like you could in WinXP. They have a button on the toolbar that says "view remote printers" which sends you to the correct folder.
I'd like to avoid having to type out the server name. I also can't use the "view network" link in windows explorer. Our organization has over 6,000 machines and viewing the network lists all of them.
This is all about saving time by using the minimum number of mouse clicks and key presses in normal operation.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
user@host$ killall -9 -u user
Will it definitely kill all processes owned by user (including forkbombs)?
No new processes is spawned to user from other users.
No user's processes are in D-sleep and unkillable.
No processes are trying to detect and ptrace or terminate this started killall.
E.g. if killall will finish untampered and successfully is it 100% that no processes are left with this uid?
I've been using Download Master on Windows for years and what I liked most about it is that this program can automatically put downloaded files into directories by download date:
/Downloads

| |--a.zip
| |--b.pdf
| ...
|
|--/2012_06_29

I'm looking for something similar for Linux. Is there any free download manager that can do this?
I have tried KGet and uGet but they both seem to lack this feature. If there is a way to configure them to do that, I'll be happy to know about it. Thank you.
I have two Mac laptops and a Debian server, each with a directory that I would like to keep in sync between the three. The solution should meet the following criteria (in rough order of importance):
It must not use any third-party service (e.g. Dropbox, SugarSync, Google whatever). This does not include installing additional software (as long as it's free).
It must not require me to use specific directories or change my way of storing things. (Dropbox does this IIRC)
It must work in all directions (changes made on /any/ machine should be pushed to the others)
All data sent must be encrypted (I have ssh keypairs set up already)
It must work even when not all machines are available (changes should be pushed to a machine when it comes back online)
It must work even when the /directories/ on some machines are not available (they may be stored on disk images which will not always be mounted)
This can be solved for Macs by using launchd to automatically launch and kill (or in some way change the behavior of) whatever daemon is used for syncing when the images are mounted and unmounted.
It must be immediate (using an event-based system, not a periodic one like cron)
It must be flexible (if more machines are added, I should be able to incorporate them easily)
I also have some preferences that I would like to be fulfilled, but do not have to be:
It should notify me somehow if there are conflicts or other errors.
It should recognize symbolic and hard links and create corresponding ones.
It should allow me to create a list of exceptions (subdirectories which will not be synced at all).
It should not require me to set up port forwarding or otherwise reconfigure a network.
This can be solved by using an ssh tunnel with reverse port forwarding.
If you have a solution that meets some, but not all of the criteria, please contribute it in the comments as it might be useful in some way, and it might be possible to meet some of the criteria separately.
What I tried, and why it didn't work:
rsync and lsyncd do not support bidirectional synchronization
csync2 is designed for server clusters and does not appear to work with machines with dynamic IPs
DRBD (suggested by amotzg) involves installing a kernel module and does not appear to work on systems running OS X
In Windows Vista, when I try to move a folder to replace an existing folder, Vista asks me if I want to merge the folders or cancel. How do I get the old XP behavior where the old folder is just replaced.
This issue is especially challenging when moving many folders at once and some of them move but then some of them hit this merge/cancel problem.
Thanks!
I just got a virtual dedicated server at GoDaddy. I got the Simple Control Panel. There doesn't seem to be a way to create a guest ftp user through this control panel and I was told it must be created through SSH. I have a program called Putty which can log into the server via SSH. I'm familiar with logging in but does anyone know what the commands are to be used to create a guest ftp user and give them Read and Write access to a particular folder?

My VAIO advised me to switch to a White Background, to reduce power consumption.
But it seems contradictory to common logic. Its like saying a brighter Torch consuming less than a dimmer one.
Common Logic says that, Screen is BLACK when not using any POWER, so displaying black color should not consume any power (because without powering any pixel it gives black color)
Also a white screen gives me more light than a darker one, so it should use more Energy.
White Wallpaper = More Light Output = More Electrical Energy Consumed
Black Wallpaper = Less Light = Less Electricity Consumed
My question is - Is there anything wrong with the above argument ?
A Lighter Wallpaper consumes less power than a Darker one.
Is it true ?
If yes, Why ?
I've manually installed the latest Eclipse on our debian server and wanted to configure it so all users share the same configuration. It turned out less obvious than I thought: I don't seem to be able to install packages for all users. If I run it myself, all configuration data is saved under my own home directory. If I run Eclipse using sudo, everything is saved under the root directory but is not accessible for other users when they run Eclipse.
I've been browsing the manual of Eclipse and some forums, but apart from a "yes, you can" I couldn't find any information on how that should be done. The biggest problem is installing plugins for all users to be found. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Eclipse : 3.6.1 classic, installed using this procedure.
Server uname: GNU/Linux * 2.6.26-2-amd64
Server is accessed using Putty, and Gnome desktop through realVNC. Just mentioning it if that is of any importance. Our sysadmin is on "prolonged leave" (working in Spain and never replaced), so I'm stuck without help here.
EDIT : -- I asked this question also on StackOverflow as I wasn't certain this is a genuine server-related question. Please feel free to merge both questions at the appropriate place. --
To delete a file in Finder you have to press CMD+Delete. It then moves the current selection to the root folder of the file you've just deleted. Is there any way to have the selection select the next file in the same directory instead, ala Windows Explorer?
Situation: a financial advisor starts talking to a customer after starting a timer. When the conversation ends, he stops the timer and the amount of time is added to a log file with information about the customer.
Does such an application already exist?
I need a service which allows me to edit a hosted text file by email.
For example: I write an email to [email protected] with subject "ADD LINE 10" and sending it the mail body is inserted into myfile which is hosted on a server of someservice.ext. Same for "DELETE LINE 12" or "SUBSTITUTE LINE 15". If I write "ECHO FILE" or something similar, the service should send me an email with the updated content of the text file.
Does it exist?
Up until a week ago, my laptop has always been able to charge the battery while I'm using it. Now, it will not charge unless the computer is sleeping, hibernating, or turned off. The icon in the start tray states that the battery is charging but it is not animated (it used to be) and of course the power level does not increase.
Otherwise, the battery seems to be fine. The battery life is decent (2h+) and while the laptop is in use and plugged in the battery will maintain a constant charge.
Any troubleshooting help would be great (i.e. is this a charger issue, battery issues, software issue, etc...)
I'm on a dedicated server using CentOS, and on this server I have 5000+ directories in one main directory.
In the main directory I have an index.php. I would like to copy this index.php into all 5000+ directories, but the only way I know how is doing it manually.
Is there a way through the command line that I can enter something like cp and make it work from the directory? I'd copy it all the way down through all the directories and there sub directories within this main directory I am starting out in.
Looking for an checklist for an "small company freebsd/jail server".
Having pretty common starting point:
FreeBSD jail (remote/headless) for the company:
public web, email, ftp server, and
private (maybe in the future partially public) wiki (foswiki)
4 physical persons, (6 email addresses) + one admin - others will never use ssh)
have already done usual hardening on the host side (like pf, sshguard etc).
my major components are: dovecot, exim, apache22, proftpd, perl5.14.
Looking for an checklist, what I shouldn't forget. My plan:
openssl self-signed certificates for exim, dovecot and proftpd (wildcard keys)
openssl self-signed certificate for apache (later will go for "trusted-signed" key)
My questions are:
is is an "good practice" having one pair of wildcard SSL-certificates for many programs? (exim, dovecot, proftpd) - or should I generate one key for each service?
should I add all 4 persons as standard (unix) users, or I should go with virtual users? Asking because:
have only small count of users, and
it is more simple to configure everything (exim, dovecot) for local users ($HOME/Maildir), plus ability to set $HOME/.forward/vacation and etc.
is here some (special) things what I should consider? (e.g. maybe, in the future we want setup our own webmail - will make this any difference?)
any other recommendation?
Thank you, hoping that this question fit into the http://serverfault.com/faq under the:
Server and Business Workstation operating systems, hardware, software
Operations, maintenance, and monitoring
Looking for an checklist, but please explain why you're recommending it. See Good Subjective, Bad Subjective.

What's your suggested mail server configuration for a FreeBSD server?
Whenever I run a CPU-heavy activity (like compressing a big set of files into an archive for example) my CPU switches to its full throttle (maximum frequency) and shuts down of overheat in less than a minute.
Instead, I would like it to keep slowed-down slightly to do the task a bit slower but be able to reach the finish.
At the same time I don't want to dim my screen brightness or adjust anything else what standard Windows power-saving system does.
So how do I actually set a cap to limit my CPU power?
The CPU is Core 2 Duo T7250, the OS is Windows 7 32-bit, there seem to be no BIOS settings or jumpers available to configure the frequencies.
I tried to install Webmin on Ubuntu by following the instructions on http://www.webmin.com/deb.html. Using the Update Manager GUI I added the repositories and the key
deb http://download.webmin.com/download/repository sarge contrib
deb http://webmin.mirror.somersettechsolutions.co.uk/repository sarge contrib
However when I do an:
apt-get update
apt-get install webmin
I get the error:
W: Failed to fetch http://download.webmin.com/download/repository/dists/sarge/Release Unable to find expected entry 'contrib/source/Sources' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file)
W: Failed to fetch http://webmin.mirror.somersettechsolutions.co.uk/repository/dists/sarge/Release Unable to find expected entry 'contrib/source/Sources' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file)
Looing at the page at the URL I can see:
7029066c27ac6f5ef18d660d5741979a 20 contrib/source/Sources.gz
Is the error caused by the fact that the Sources are compressed with gzip or am I doing something wrong?
Every time I open up my task manager and look at the tasks running, it appears to me that there has got to be a bunch of junk running in there that I don't want or need and would be better off turning off (e.g. set the service to manual vs. automatic)
In particular I'm running Windows XP, but I'd be interested in services for any version.
e.g.
Service: ThinkPad PM Service
What is it: The ibmpmsvc.exe process is installed by default on IBM Notebook computers. It allows various functions of your IBM notebook to be controlled using the blue Fn keys. If you use the blue Fn keys on your Notebook, you should leave this process running. Otherwise, if it is causing problems for your system you should terminate the ibmpmsvc.exe process. (source)
Thus for me, (having never used, or intending to use these buttons) - I want to turn it off.
There's lots that just seem painfully unnecessary to me... I'm just not sure which ones I can "safely" stop/disable without issues... "Alerter", "ClipBook", "Messenger", "Telnet", "ATI Hotkey Poller", "Office Source Engine", etc.
I'd appreciate any info on services that are truly unnecessary, or only useful to certain people/types of users.
I have few notes or text like few remembering lines on daily or weekly basis.
I want to write it. but i should be able to see at any backdate /monthly or yearly.
The date-time should also be stored when i enter text.
is it possible
EDIT:
I will explain clearly what i exactly want.
Suppose while working on internet
1)i find "ABC is good for BCD". now
i want to add that text to some online
site where i can see later
2)Now i can add those type of things any time and on internet i can
see that in tabular form like click to
see montly list , yearly or weekly
3)Other thing is i should be able to add text as easy as possible like
in firefox if i can press some shotcut
and enter something and it gets added
there rather than opening the site and
then write
The to do list do that sort of thing but they dont have creation date , rather they filter based on due date.
Hello everyone,
I apologize in advance for incorrect use of terminology, as I'm not an IT person by trade.
I'm doing some remote work via a VPN for a client and I need to add some DCOM Service security permissions for my remote user. Even though I'm on the VPN, the request for access to the DCOM service is using my PCs native user (and since I'm running Vista Home Premium it looks something like: PC-NAME\Username). The request for access comes back with access denied and I can not add this user to the security permissions as it "is not from a domain listed in the Select Location dialog box, and is therefore not valid".
I'm pretty stuck and have no clue what kind of steps I need to do here. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
EDIT:
I have no control over what credentials are being passed in to the server by my computer. This scenario is occurring in an installation wizard that has a section which requests you point it to the machine running the "server" version of the software I'm installing (it then tries to invoke the relevant COM service, but my user does not have "Remove Activation Permissions" on that service, so I get request denied).
