  • Can't read CDs, can't create USB... how do I install Ubuntu?

    Hello everyone and thank you in advance for your time. I have troubles with the latest Ubuntu distribution: since I upgraded to 12.04 Ubuntu has started having troubles (internal errors, packages that crash repeatedly, I can't install new packages, Ubuntu Software Center crashes, Java apps that worked stopped working and display weird mistakes, files were corrupted... a mess). I ultimately decided to format everything and install 12.04 from scratch. I made a backup and everything, but now I have troubles installing ubuntu 12.04. Specifically, a CD I burned with Brasero that works on another PC is not read by my laptop (not at boot phase, nor inside Ubuntu), and when I try to create a USB with Ubuntu (following the instructions I found on the ubuntu site) Startup Disk Creator stops at 22% saying that "the codes do not match". Any idea on what to do next? No, I can't buy a new PC.

  • Workaround for starting zabbix agent on Ubuntu. update-rc.d LSB mismatch

    I am trying to run the zabbix-agent (1.8.1) on boot on Ubuntu (lucid 10.04). Zabbix is installed just fine, and it manually starts just fine with /etc/init.d/zabbix-agent start However it doesn't start on boot, because when I run: sudo update-rc.d zabbix-agent default I get: update-rc.d: warning: zabbix-agent start runlevel arguments (none) do not match LSB Default-Start values (2 3 4 5) update-rc.d: warning: zabbix-agent stop runlevel arguments (none) do not match LSB Default-Stop values (0 1 6) After googling around I found some cryptic information about this being a possible bug with Zabbix's startup scripts, but I can't find a workaround. I'm trying to understand how the update-rc.d system works, but I'm not getting very far. How can I modify this setup to start the zabbix-agent on startup?

  • How does Amarok rip Audio CDs (in Ubuntu Lucid)?

    I'm in the process of moving my CD collection into my Amarok library. Mostly, it works great. Sometimes however, the process just hangs forever. The problem seems to occur at random (i. e. often, but not always at the same disk/track) and the consequences range from none (successful after cancel/retry) to Amarok's internal db becoming completely messed up. I would like to investigate and file a proper bug report or find a fix / workaround, but I don't understand how Amarok does the ripping. When all is working, there's a lame process encoding to a temporary file, which appears in my collection once it's finished. When the process hangs, that lame command is still there, but waiting forever for data on stdin, which seems to come from a third process. That seems to be kio_audiocd, but I don't know whether that's correct and what it's supposed to do. What's going on?

  • 'Bug in Mailman version 2.1.12'

    I'm working on setting up a server running Plesk 10.4.4 Update #13 on Centos 6.2. I've configured Mailman and now I want to set up some mailing lists. I've created a list in the Plesk control panel, but when I try to administer the new list (by visiting http://lists.[domain].com/mailman/admin/[listname] I see the following error: Bug in Mailman version 2.1.12 We're sorry, we hit a bug! Please inform the webmaster for this site of this problem. Printing of traceback and other system information has been explicitly inhibited, but the webmaster can find this information in the Mailman error logs. I see exactly the same error if I try to go to the list info page at http://lists.[domain].com/mailman/listinfo/[listname]. I would follow the instructions and look in the error logs, but I can't find them. I would expect to find a file at /var/log/mailman/error, but there's nothing there. My test list seems to work correctly. It sends all the expected email. It's just the web pages for the list that seem to be broken. Has anyone else seen this? Any suggestions for tracking down and fixing the problem? p.s. I think I've chosen the correct Stack Exchange site, but it this question would be better asked elsewhere, please let me know. Update: I got to the bottom of this, so I'm documenting the answer in case anyone else has the same problem. The fact that I couldn't find the error log was the clue. The problem was that the Mailman process didn't have permissions to create an error log. And it seems that if Mailman can't create an error log then it will respond to any web request with this error page. Creating an error log file (in /var/log/mailman/error) and giving it the correct permissions fixed the problem.

  • What service can hold CPU at lowest frequency possible when on battery load under Ubuntu?

    When I'm running on battery even with "performance" frequency scaling governor, something regularly lowers CPU speed to it's lowest value. I don't really want that, my AC strip usually in another room so I don't really need to save power. How can I find what service doing that? laptop_mode is disabled so that's not it. Update: Looks like CPU being scaled down only if it is under load. If it is more or less idle, it could stay on any frequency pretty much forever, but once it gets loaded, it quickly jumps to it's lowest frequency.   • How to access remote mysql host on Ubuntu inside VMware?

    Hi, I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 inside VMware fusion on Mac OSX Snow Leopard. Inside ubuntu, I'm attempting to use command-line mysql to connect to a database hosted on a separate web server. For some reason, mysql misinterprets the remote hostname as a local address, and is not able to connect to the database. Steps: (from ubuntu inside VMware) mysql -u <my-username> -h mysql-2.sandbox.wrkng.net -p Enter Password: <my password> expected: to log into mysql got: ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user '<my-username>'@'c-71-233-98-90.hds1.ma.comcast.net' (using password: YES) Note that the hostname referenced in the error message is different than the one I inputted to the mysql command. Also, performing the same command from the Mac (host of the VM) terminal successfully connects to the database. I am not seasoned with VMware or linux, so I may be missing something obvious here -- it seems like somewhere along the way either ubuntu or the VM has a networking issue. Note also that accessing the internet via ubuntu inside the VM works fine. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    I am using same network for 2 days and everything was normal. However, today even though it shows me as connected to the network, I do not have internet connection. If I use ethernet cable instead of wireless, I am still able to connect to the internet. Also my friends are able to connect to the wireless network and they can get internet connection. I did not update or install anything since yesterday. Therefore I do not have any idea why it is happening.   • Two network adapters on Ubuntu Server 9.10 - Can't have both working at once?

    I'm trying to set up two network adapters in Ubuntu (server edition) 9.10. One for the public internet, the other a private LAN. During the install, I was asked to pick a primary network adapter (eth0 or eth1). I chose eth0, gave the installer the details listed below in the contents of /etc/network/interfaces, and carried on. I've been using this adapter with these setting for the last few days, and every thing's been fine. Today, I decide it's time to set up the local adapter. I edit the /etc/network/interfaces to add the details for eth1 (see below), and restart networking with sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart. After this, attempting to ping the machine using it's external IP address fails, but I can ping it's local IP address. If I bring eth1 down using sudo ifdown eth1, I can successfully ping the machine via it's external IP address again (but obviously not it's internal IP address). Bringing eth1 back up returns us to the original problem state: external IP not working, internal IP working. Here's my /etc/network/interfaces (I've removed the external IP information, but these settings are unchanged from when it worked) rob@rhea:~$ cat /etc/network/interfaces # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system # and how to activate them.   • How can I install both mod-perl2 and mod-php5 on Ubuntu?

    From Ubuntu's package libary, I find the two modules I need. However: mod-perl2 requires apache2-mpm-worker mod-php5 requires apache2-mpm-prefork The two apache modules are mutually exclusive and ask me to un-install the other in order to install each. Which means I can't get a server running with both mod-perl2 and mod-php5. Any help greatly appreciated.

    After patching some kernel modules, I got VMware Workstation 6.5.4 running on my Ubuntu 10.4 x86_64 machine. However, now my Windows XP SP3 guest instance cannot keep mouse input captured for any length of time. I can sometimes activate a control in the guest if a double click very quickly, but it's not reliable (and extremely annoying). Everything appears to be fine in Unity; the problem just appears when I'm running the instance in the VMware window.
