  • Why I sould not develop an opensource runtime UI Autogeneration from domain objects?

    I'm using for my projects a rather complete UI auto-generation tool from database entities for windows forms and asp.net I wrote. Now I've built a working prototype UI auto-generation tool from domain objects. Right now it is in early stage of development and by reflection it generates user interface for creating and updating domain objects. I searched a bit and I didn't find other opensource projects that have the same goal. Why? This type of tool is not useful? Is this idea fundamentally flawed? Thanks.

    I am looking for a step by step instructions to setup at leat two (and later more) simple Ubuntu Virtual Core 12.10 Server VMs on Oracle VirtualBox under Windows 7 64bit. The test setup would be: Apache HTTP server on the Windows host acting as a Load Balancer. The result will be that going to http://localhost:8080 would balance between two nodes and prove session replication. Two lean, small footprint Ubuntu Server guest nodes with Java 7 and Tomcat 7. The intention is to help everyone doing High Availability / Load Balancing development and testing to create a reasonable environment on the local workstation or mainstream notebook in as little time as possible.

  • How to select the page range to print in Windows 8 Modern UI apps?

    Today I wanted to print an email from the Mail app (modern UI). I selected devices from the charms bar, and I chose my printer. The problem is that it was a very long email (a 40 replies unthreaded email), and I only needed the first page. It looks like there is no way to select a page range in the simple printing dialog, am I right? I solved the problem by inserting just one page in the printer and then deleting the job, but this is not a real fix... (I could print to a PDF printer, then open in Acrobat and print again, but...)

  • DIV inside TD to make it appear correctly

    Hi, I have a <table> generated from code-behind and now facing a problem. In one of the TD i need to have a DIV that is setup with JQuery so that when i click a link the DIV slideToggles. Now i need the TD belonging to that TR not to expand the TR. To solve this i have used an old trick that is to place the JQuery DIV inside another surrounding DIV with height 1px and make the TR not expanding with the heigth of the DIV that slides out. In IE the sliding DIV is partially under the table and in Firefox the DIV appears over the table but it's trasparent, the text from the data in the table shows thru. I have tried to alter the Z-index in various ways but it's no good. Anyone that has an idea or alternatively solution that has worked for them.   • [Android] How to launch an Activity without a UI?

    Is it in any way possible to launch an activity from the main function without having a UI? i.e. is there a way to create a sort of "wrapper" around another activity, i.e. by launching the main activity, it takes you to another activity automatically. If that is not possible, is there a way to remove the main activity from the stack so that clicking the back button does not take you to a blank UI?   • Security exception in Twitterizer

    Hi, We are using Twitterizer for Twitter integration to get the Tweets details. When making call to the method OAuthUtility.GetRequestToken, following exception is coming. System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Net.WebPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. When the application is hosted on IIS 5, the application works fine and the above error is coming only when the application is hosted in IIS 7 on Windows 2008 R2. and the method OAuthUtility.GetRequestToken throws above exception. It seems the issue is something with code access security. Please suggest what kind of permissions should be given to fix the security exception. The application has the Full Trust and I have even tried by registering the Twitterizer DLL in GAC and still the same error is coming. I am not sure what makes the difference between IIS 5 and IIS 7 with regards to code access security to cause that exception. Following is the stack track of the exception.     Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.1 Group Fix 4 is available from My Oracle Support as Patch 13523301. This Group Fix contains a number of enhancements and keeps fixes up to date to the latest patch level. The enhancements included in this Group Fix include: UI Hints - In previous group fixes of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework the infrastructure to support UI Hints was introduced. This group fix completes the release of this functionality. Prior to this enhancement, products and implementers typically would build at least one UI Map per Business Object to display and/or maintain the object. Whilst, this can be generated using the UI Map maintenance function and stored, this enhancement allows additional tags and elements to be added to the Business Object directly to allow dynamic generation of the UI Map for maintenance and viewing the object. This reduces the need to generate and build a UI Map at all for that object. This will reduce maintenance effort of maintaining the product and implementation by eliminating the need to maintain the HTML for the UI Map. This also allows lower skilled personnel to maintain the system. Help and working examples are available from the View schema attributes and node names option from the Schema Tips dashboard zone.     I'm looking to develop a website and all the work will be done remotely (no local dev server). The reason for this is that my shared hosting company a2hosting has a specific configuration (symfony,mysql,git) that I don't want to spend time duplicating when I can just ssh and develop remotely or through netbeans remote editing features. My question is how can I use git to separate my site into three areas: live, staging and dev.   • Looking for an example of how a software project can be managed/deployed

    My company is evaluating adopting off-the-shelf ALM products to aid in our development lifecycle; we currently use our own homegrown solutions to manage requirements gathering, specification documentation, testing, etc. One of the issues I am having is understanding how to move code between stages of development. We have what we call a pipeline, which consists of particular stops: [Source] - [QC] - [Production] At the first stop, the developer works out a solution to some requested change and performs individual testing. When that process is complete (and peer review has been performed), our ALM system physically moves the affected programs from the [Source] runtime environment to the [QC] runtime environment. This movement of code is triggered by advancing the status of the change request to match the stage of the pipeline. I have been searching the internet for a few days trying to find how the process is accomplished elsewhere -- I have read a bit about builds, automated testing, various ALM products, etc. but nowhere does any of this state how builds interact with initial change requests, what the triggers are, how dependencies are managed, how the various forms of testing are accommodated (e.g. unit testing, integration testing, regression testing), etc. Can anyone point me to any resources detailing specific workflows or attempt to explain (generically) how a change could/should be tracked and moved though the development lifecycle? I'd be very appreciative. Note: I've cleaned up the question to hopefully make it easier to understand. Also, I found another question (which I can't find now) that referenced this book, which sounds like it might be exactly what I am looking for -- not sure if I want to shell out the cash for it, though.

  • Did I Inadvertently Create a Mediator in my MVC?

    I'm currently working on my first biggish project. It's a frontend facebook application that has, since last Tuesday, spanned some 6000-8000 LOC. I say this because I'm using the MVC, an architecture I have never rigidly enforced in any of my hobby projects. I read part of the PureMVC book, but I didn't quite grasp the concept of the Mediator. Since I didn't understand and didn't see the need for it, my project has yet to use a single mediator. Yesterday I went back to the design board because of some requirement changes and noticed that I could move all UI elements out of the View and into its own class. The View essentially only managed the lifetime of the UI and all events from the UI or Model. Technically, the View has now become a 'Mediator' between the Model and UI. Therefore, I realized today, I could just move all my UI stuff back into the View and create a mediator class that handles all events from the view and model. Is my understanding correct in thinking that I have devolved my View as it currently is (handling events from the Model and UI) into a Mediator and that the UI class is what should be the View?

  • How can I change the UI language of QT Creator 1.3.1?

    I just downloaded and installed QT Creator 1.3.1 on my english Windows 7 system from the english download site at http://qt.nokia.com/downloads Apparently, however, the UI of QT Creator is in German language, although the help files are in English. From the FAQ at http://www.qt.gitorious.org/qt-creator/pages/FrequentlyAskedQuestions I found the answer Qt Creator uses the language setting of the system it runs on. On Linux systems you can also override that language by setting the LANG environment variable prior to starting Qt Creator, e.g. on the command line LANG=de ./qtcreator will run Qt Creator with german interface. This, however, is apparently not correct, as I have an English Windows, and as system locale I have "English (United Kingdom)" set. Possibly QT Creator interprets mistakenly the Windows settings for "current location", which I have set to "Germany" to mean that German would also be my language. However, changing that value had apparently no effect (maybe it should have been done before installing QT Creator). Is there any way to change the UI language of QT creator to english after installing it, preferrably without adjusting global system settings?

    What is more viable to use:- Javascript Libraries: YUI, jQuery, ExtJs OR UI Programming tools: GWT, ExtGWT, SmartGWT It has become very difficult to choose between them as they are constantly increasing their capabilities to meet newer requirements. We all know the power of jQuery in UI manipulations. The latest news from Microsoft about jQuery being officially part of .Net developr’s toolkit will definitely make jQuery a preferred choice against other JavaScript libraries [See link: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2008/09/28/jquery-and-microsoft.aspx]. But on the other hand, GWT is building a framework which could be used on client as well as on the sever side. This is definitely going to make developers’ life easy as it does not require developer to be an expert in browser quirks, XMLHttpRequest, and JavaScript in order to develop high-performance web applications. It includes SDK (Java API libraries, compiler, and development server which allows to write client-side applications in Java and deploy them as JavaScript), Speed Tracer and plug-in for Eclipse. GWT is used by many products like Google Wave and AdWords. So question is still un-answered, what is more viable to use? Any thoughts?

  • jQuery Datatables throws error when dynamically created row headers

    I am using the Datatables jquery plugin for one of my projects. For one in particular, the number of columns can vary based on how many children a consumer has (yes I realize normalization and proper technique would insert on another row but it is a client requirement). Datatables must be set up as such: <table> <thead> <tr> <th></th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> my script starts out as: <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" class="display" id="sortable"> <thead> <tr> <th>parent name</th> <th>parent phone</th> <?php try { $db->beginTransaction(); $stmt = $db->prepare("SELECT max(num_deps) FROM (SELECT count(a.id) as num_deps FROM children a INNER JOIN parents b USING(id) WHERE a.id !=0 GROUP BY a.id) x"); $stmt->execute(); $rows = $stmt->fetchAll(); for($i=1; $i<=$rows[0][0]; $i++) { echo " <th>Child Name ".$i."</th> <th>Date of Birth ".$i."</th> "; } $db->commit(); } catch (PDOException $e) { echo "<p align='center'>There was a system error. Alternativly, to destroy old table and create a new one...ETC."' Yes I have set "bRetrieve" : true in the javascript above and that does not do the trick. If I remove the code above, the file "works" fine but it leaves off the necessary columns for my table. Any ideas? UPDATE REGARDING COMMENTS/ANSWERS I have received a number of responses indicating the number of headers may not match the field count in the body. As I mention below, eliminating the php script below altogether would eliminate 5+ fields in the header and without question throw the count match off balance. This DOES NOT however cause an error and in fact "resolves" the issue in that datatables functions properly (even though there is NO header record for 5+ fields in the body.

  • Is it possible to do A/B testing by page rather than by individual?

    Lets say I have a simple ecommerce site that sells 100 different t-shirt designs. I want to do some a/b testing to optimise my sales. Let's say I want to test two different "buy" buttons. Normally, I would use AB testing to randomly assign each visitor to see button A or button B (and try to ensure that that the user experience is consistent by storing that assignment in session, cookies etc). Would it be possible to take a different approach and instead, randomly assign each of my 100 designs to use button A or B, and measure the conversion rate as (number of sales of design n) / (pageviews of design n) This approach would seem to have some advantages; I would not have to worry about keeping the user experience consistent - a given page (e.g. www.example.com/viewdesign?id=6) would always return the same html. If I were to test different prices, it would be far less distressing to the user to see different prices for different designs than different prices for the same design on different computers. I also wonder whether it might be better for SEO - my suspicion is that Google would "prefer" that it always sees the same html when crawling a page. Obviously this approach would only be suitable for a limited number of sites; I was just wondering if anyone has tried it?

    In my application, I have a 'logging' window, which shows all the logging, warnings, errors of the application. Last year my application was still single-threaded so this worked [quite] good. Now I am introducing multithreading. I quickly noticed that it's not a good idea to update the logging window from different threads. Reading some articles on keeping the UI in the main thread, I made a communication buffer, in which the other threads are adding their logging messages, and from which the main thread takes the messages and shows them in the logging window (this is done in the message loop). Now, in a part of my application, the memory usage increases dramatically, because the separate threads are generating lots of logging messages, and the main thread cannot empty the communication buffer quickly enough. After the while the memory decreases again (if the other threads have finished their work and the main thread gradually empties the communication buffer). I solved this problem by having a maximum size on the communication buffer, but then I run into a problem in the following situation: the main thread has to perform a complex action the main thread takes some parts of the action and let's separate threads execute this while the seperate threads are executing their logic, the main thread processes the results from the other threads and continues with its work if the other threads are finished Problem is that in this situation, if the other threads perform logging, there is no UI-message loop, and so the communication buffer is filled, but not emptied. I see two solutions in solving this problem: require the main thread to do regular polling of the communication buffer only performing user interface logic in the main thread (no other logic) I think the second solution seems the best, but this may not that easy to introduce in a big application (in my case it performs mathematical simulations). Are there any other solutions or tips? Or is one of the two proposed the best, easiest, most-pragmatic solution? Thanks, Patrick

I’m attempting to test an action method that has a dependency on HttpContext.Current.Cache and wanted to know the best practice for achieving the “low coupling” to allow for easy testing. I then access it like such...     What are the best UI design in terms of usability and esthetics you have even seen? I mean both desktop software (of all OS) and website. My list: Picasa 3 - the way it organizes photos. Find-and-highlight-as-you-type in google Chrome. Dynamic search hints when entering something in the search box in Gmail. I'm not a Mac OS X user, but I have seen in most windows on the top toolbar there are both the icons and texts shown for each function, as apposed to on Windows I have seen many programs (MS Office included) have many small toolbar icons which you can hardly understand what they do until you hover the mouse on it for a while to see the hints (if any). The ability to search an setting in Eclipse IDE. the way to make 3D models in Google Sketchup. the way to label an email in Gmail. What are you list? Well, I couldn't resist to list some annoying UI design I have experienced and remember at this moment. IE on Windows server, when you visit the new website, you have to click many times to get it added to the white list before you can start browsing, IIRC, it's not fixed in IE 8 when that last time I used it on Windows 2008. The default search behavior in the File Explorer on Windows xp, that animated thing... the dialog that shows up when you are trying to save a plain text CSV file in Excel after applied some formatting options which does not compatible with CSV.

  • DotNetOpenAuth OpenID Provider "Sequence contains more than one element"

    Hello, all, I'm having trouble implementing my OpenID provider with DNOA 3.4.3. Everything was going absolutely peachy until I needed AX support as well. I set AXFetchAsSregTransform in the web config, as recommended by Andrew at http://groups.google.com/group/dotnetopenid/browse_thread/thread/5629a24c0a7e8d99. Doing this caused me to get the exception "Sequence Contains More Than One Element" on my decide.aspx page, however, and I haven't been able to get past it. The following line is throwing the exception: Edit: Strangely enough, this is not the line throwing the error anymore. The SendResponse() is now triggering the exception ClaimsRequest requestedFields = ProviderEndpoint.PendingRequest.GetExtension(); ProviderEndpoint.SendResponse() Any thoughts on why this may be? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
