  • Determining how all memory is used in Windows Server 2008

    I have a Windows Server 2008 system, which has 12GB of RAM. If I list all processes in the Task Manager, and SUM() the memory of each process (Working Set, Memory (Private Working Set), Commit Size, ...), I never reach more than 4-5GB that should be "in use". However, task manager reports this server has 11GB in use via the "Performance" tab. I'm failing in determining where all that used RAM is going. It doesn't seem to be system cache, but I can not be sure. It might be a memory leak in one of the appliances, but I'm struggling to find out which one. The server's memory keeps filing up, and eventually forces us to reboot the device to clear it. Inspired by DOS on Dope, I want to make my own framework for Web Service development based on MFC serialization. However, my only experience in Web Service development consists in having written a toy ASP.NET Web Service. All I had to do to expose a method was... [WebMethod] public ReturnType ExposedMethod(InputType1 param1, InputType2 param2) { //... } ... and ASP.NET took care of the rest for me. Obviously, I will have to do everything by hand in my own framework. Thus, I would like to delve a bit more into the little details of how ordinary SOAP Web Services work, in order to replicate them. So I have mainly two questions: Where can I find the details on how SOAP Web Services work, and what ASP.NET hides from me? What are the main challenges I am going to find in my completely lunatic project?

    I need to build a cross platform mobile app (iphone, android, etc). The app is for a company like a cellular operator (Tmobile, ATT). The app needs to do the following: Show previous bills (cached so that it does not have to download everytime) Need an internet connection to download newer bills, view recent data, etc. Can I build a mobile web app to handle this? I understand that there is offline storage and iPhone has good support for web apps (full screen, good icons, offline, etc). Will a web app be the best approach to take as the app requires to be online? The app will not be used by lots of people, just customers of the website who don't want to use an existing website. We are all web developers and a mobile web app looks like the best way to approach this.

  • VMWare server: virtual machine start-up reaches 95% and hangs

    This problem cropped up today, after updating my eVGA motherboard's chipset in order to try and fix an unrelated issue. After installing the chipset update (contained SATA and Ethernet drivers), every time I've tried to start my Ubuntu VM, it reaches 95% in the web interface and then just hangs. I'm using VMWare Server 2.0.2, running it within Windows 7 64-bit. I haven't had any issues up until now, and I suspect it has something to do with the chipset update. I've already tried reinstalling VMWare itself, removing the VM from the inventory and re-adding it, and neither has proved successful. I'm also not sure how to kill the VMware server process itself once the start-up hangs; I've only been able to try again by rebooting (as none of the VMWare Services listed kill the server process itself). Any insights? Edit: Uhhh...as an addendum: I have a cron job set up on my Ubuntu VM that runs every 20 minutes. The VM is still listed in the VMWare web interface as at 95% of startup, and the start/stop buttons are still disabled, but the cronjob just ran. I also tested SSH, and I was able to tunnel into the Ubuntu VM as well. Now I'm really confused. Edit #2: I just started a thread on the VMWare Server support forums on this same topic. Hopefully between the two communities, we can come up with an answer: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/251033 Edit #3: In lieu of a specific fix, I've switched over to VirtualBox, and all is working just fine.

Edit: Clarification: By "integrating", I mean that two or more services should be seamlessly connected, and that connection would benefit the user.     I was considering using Google Sites to host some webpages with HTML5 and JavaScript experiments I'm trying out, but it seems that they don't allow JavaScript. Does anybody have any good suggestions for a free web hosting service where I can upload simple HTML/CSS & JavaScript experiments? I don't have large bandwidth needs, nor do I need a WYSIWYG editor. Web Module is dependent on the other ejb modules.. How should I define Pom.xml in each Module so that web module can communicate with the other two ejb modules in ear and the ear module builds the right ear file? I require it for web development, so using VMs, IDEs, connecting to VPNs, SSH to servers, etc. Im currently using 9.04 and found 9.10 unstable and problematic at times (such as problems connecting to VPN) Any input would be appreciated, thanks!

  • Remote Desktop - remote computer that was reached is not the one you specified

    We just setup some new Windows 2008 R2 servers and we are unable to Remote Desktop into them from our Windows 7 desktops. Remote desktop connects, but after we provide credentials we get: The connection cannot be completed because the remote computer that was reached is not the one you specified. This could be caused by an outdated entry in the DNS cache. Try using the IP address of the computer instead of the name. If we connect from Windows 7 to a machine not running Windows 2008 R2, or from a machine not running Windows 7 to the Windows 2008 R2 server, it works fine. Likewise if we connect to the Windows 2008 R2 server from Windows 7 via the IP address then it works fine (although that causes other problems later). I've only found one other mention of someone having this problem, so I don't think it is just our network. Any suggestions on how to connect from Windows 7 to Windows 2008 R2 via DNS? Both are 64-bit. Update: Turns out it does not need to be R2 to get the error. We have another server that is Windows 2008 R1 64-bit that also fails.

  • Dell VRTX - slow cluster shared storage

    I have a brand new Dell VRTX box set up as a Failover Cluster running HA Hyper-V virtual machines. This is my first time setting up clustering, and my first time with one of these boxes, so I'm sure I've missed something. The virtual machines are experiencing high disk latency and bad performance when accessing their VHD(x) files located on a Cluster Shared Volume. The VRTX has 10 x 900 GB 10K SAS drives in RAID 6 configuration, and the VRTX has the redundant Shared PERC 8 controllers. Both blades have full access to the virtual disks. There are two M520 blades installed, each with 128 GB RAM. MPIO is configured for the PERC 8 controllers. Operating system on the blades is Server 2012 (NOT R2). The RAID 6 array is split into a small (8 GB) volume for cluster quorum witness and a large (6.5 TB) volume for a Cluster Shared Volume (mounted on the nodes as C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1) An example of slow disk access: logging into a Server 2012 VM and having Server Manager come up automatically. Disk access goes to 100%, with write speeds at 20 MB or so, read speeds of 500 KB or so, and Average Response Time of over 1000 ms, sometimes spiking at 4000-5000 ms or so. It's the latency that really worries me. Is there something specific I should look at in my configuration? It doesn't seem to matter whether I use VHD or VHDX, dynamic or static.
