  • SQL vs. Oracle Live Debate (AKA Smackdown!)

    - by Peter W. DeBetta
A few years ago I was speaking at a conference in Raleigh, NC where Ted Neward and I found a fun way to promote a Java vs. .NET debate that was planned one evening. We stood in the middle of a crowd during one of the breaks and starting “arguing” about Java vs. .NET with one another. Our voice levels quickly raised and we ended it by slapping each other across the face with a glove to request a challenge. It was a great way to segue to our announcing of the actual debate planned later that evening....(read more)

  • sys.dm_exec_query_stats interaction with recompilation

    - by Sam Saffron
We use sys.dm_exec_query_stats to track down slow queries and queries that are IO offenders. This works great, we get a lot of very insightful stats. It is clear this is not as accurate as running a profiler trace, as you have no idea when SQL Server will decide to chuck out a an execution plan. We have quite a few queries where the wrong execution plan is cached. For example queries like the following: SELECT TOP 30 a.Id FROM Posts a JOIN Posts q ON q.Id = a.ParentId JOIN PostTags pt ON q.Id = pt.PostId WHERE a.PostTypeId = 2 AND a.DeletionDate IS NULL AND a.CommunityOwnedDate IS NULL AND a.CreationDate @date AND LEN(a.Body) 300 AND pt.Tag = @tag AND a.Score 0 ORDER BY a.Score DESC The problem is that the ideal plan really depends on the date selected (screenshot of ideal plan): However if the wrong plan is cached, it totally chokes when the date range is big: (notice the big fat lines) To overcome this we were recommended to use either OPTION (OPTIMIZE FOR UNKNOWN) or OPTION (RECOMPILE) OPTIMIZE FOR UNKNOWN results in a slightly better plan, which is far from optimal. Executions are tracked in sys.dm_exec_query_stats. RECOMPILE results in the best plan being chosen, however no execution counts and stats are tracked in sys.dm_exec_query_stats. Is there another DMV we could use to track stats on queries with OPTION (RECOMPILE)? Is this behavior by-design? Is there another way we can for recompilation while keeping stats tracked in sys.dm_exec_query_stats? Note: the framework will always execute parameterized queries using sp_executesql

    - by AaronBertrand
Last week I mentioned in passing that Service Pack 1 is now available, while I was blogging from the PASS Summit keynote . • An online version of ClearTrace

    - by Bill Graziano
When I visit clients for the first time and conduct a performance review I introduce them to ClearTrace. It’s still the best way I know to identify exactly which queries are consuming the most resources.  The downside is that it needs to be downloaded and create a database to store the results.  I finally decided it would be easier if I could just upload a trace immediately. You can find the online version of ClearTrace at TraceTune.com.  It provides a simple way to upload a trace file and see exactly which stored procedures or SQL statements consume the most CPU and disk.   This is still a work in progress as I try to determine exactly which features from ClearTrace are important.  I’ve also limited the file upload to 10MB in this beta release.  That might not sound like much but I get over 20,000 events using this stored procedure to generate the trace. If you’re looking for something to do on a Friday, I’d suggest a little performance tuning.  Generating 10MB of trace data doesn’t take long at all and in a short time you’ll see exactly which SQL statements you need to tune first.

  • Upgrading a live 8.04 LTS server to More uptodate version

    - by richardhx
Running Apache, MySQL, PHP with Moodle 1.9.9 running as a school based CMS. All possible updates for 8.04 have been applied. Moodle 2.x from Versions 2.1 onwards needs Php version 5.3.2 which is included in more recent distribution version. Would I be better (safer) upgrading php & mysql or upgrading Ubuntu to a more recent version? - if upgrading Ubuntu is better, are there any caveats i should know before attempting this. I will be taking a Copy of the entire server before doing any upgrading. Hoping to run on a test version also. Bit green on Linux hence lack of confidence.

  • jQuery - upgrade from version 1.6.x to 1.7

    - by Renso
Goal: Issues to consider when upgrading from jQuery version 1.6 to 1.7. This is a short list and may help identify the real issues you need to concern yourself with in stead of reading through all the release notesSummary of issues encountered during upgrade:As you prepare for upgrade to jQuery 1.7 from 1.6.x, this is a quick glimpse of all the issues that are relevant, not sure if it covers all but may be all you need to worry about.Use this method only for checking checkboxes and radio buttons:$("input:checked")http://api.jquery.com/checked-selector/This will work regardless of the version of jQuery you are using. Note that $("input).attr("checked") returns true prior to jQuery 1.6. Only retrieve "real" attributes with "attr", in order versions it would also retrieve properties like "tagName", this no longer works with jQuery 1.6.1+Why does $("input").attr("checked") no longer (from version 1.6.1+) return TRUE or FALSE, because if you look at the HTML (as well as W3C spec) it does not contain a true/false, but the value checked="checked", which is what it should have returned in the first place. $("input").prop("checked") works, return true, because there is in fact a DOM property for "checked" with the value being "true" or "false".Furthermore, if you want to upgrade to jQuery 1.7 you should only have to worry about this for most part:1. isNumeric() is new, be careful as the older version jQuery.isNaN() has been deprecated2. jqXHR success and error have been deprecated3. When rendering content with text(), white space issue cross-browsers: http://bugs.jquery.com/ticket/3144Other than the issues above I am not aware of any deprecations you need to worry about.Hope this helps to get everyone up to version 1.7

  • 3.2.0-31-generic version doesn't boot

    - by user92526
12.04 used to work just fine a month ago. Since August, I installed all of the available updates. Since then my mac-pro is acting weird. If I restart the computer, the screen gets stuck in the purple back ground without any texts. Then if I restart again, I can choose what versions of linux I want to run. If I select 3.2.0-31-generic, the machine gets stuck in a state of blinking cursor. If I boot again to run 3.2.0-31-generic recovery mode, the machine gets stuck in a "..... memory freed End of Stack" mode. I can't boot through this kernel. I have to choose an older version of linux like 3.2.0-12-generic to boot into my mac pro, but I have too boot twice to get into this version. I was wondering --if you could provide me a solution to boot the 3.2.0-31-generic version. -- if you could provide me a solution to boot into any version the first time I restart. (Usually I have to kill the first restart) --- If there is an option in linux to choose what version I want to run every time I restart so that I don't have to choose everytime. Thank you

  • Reporting SQL Vulnerability [migrated]

    - by Ciaran87Bel
My first post here so i'll hopefully keep it simple. I have just finished building a CMS targeted at a certain industry and built a test site to see how everything works. Anyway I wrote a program to check for sql injection vulnerabilities and the program followed a blog link to an external website. The program discovered that the external site had a massive vulnerability that left it open to practically anyone who could then access every bit of data on their MYSQL Server and run queries etc. The thing is this external site is the brand leader in their industry and do millions upon millions of sales per annum. I have tried contacting them to let them know and even went as far as contacting the company that built their platform but I was pretty much brushed off and haven't heard back from them. Their database would contain the details of hundreds of thousands of customers and all their data. I could easily make myself site admin etc in a few seconds but they won't listen to me even though I have offered to share the vulnerability with them and help in anyway I can. Is there anything else I can do because it is one of the biggest security risks I have ever personally come across. Is there any other steps I should take to report this? Thanks

  • JPA @Version behaviour

    - by Albert Kam
Hello, im using JPA2 with Hibernate 3.6.x I have made a simple testing on the @Version. Let's say we have 2 entities, Entity Team has a List of Player Entities, bidirectional relationship, lazy fetchtype, cascade-type All Both entities have @Version And here are the scenarios : Whenever a modification is made to one of the team/player entity, the team/player's version will be increased when flushed/commited (version on the modified record is increased). Adding a new player entity to team's collection using persist, the entity the team's version will be assigned after persist (adding a new entity, that new entity will got it's version). Whenever an addition/modification/removal is made to one of the player entity, the team's version will be increased when flushed/commited. (add/modify/remove child record, parent's version got increased also) I can understand the number 1 and 2, but the number 3, i dont understand, why the team's version got increased ? And that makes me think of other questions : What if i got Parent <- child <- granchildren relation ship. Will an addition or modification on the grandchildren increase the version of child and parent ? In scenario number 2, how can i get the version on the team before it's commited, like perhaps by using flush ? Is it a recommended way to get the parent's version after we do something to the child[s] ? Here's a code sample from my experiment, proving that when ReceivingGoodDetail is the owning side, and the version got increased in the ReceivingGood after flushing. Sorry that this use other entities, but ReceivingGood is like the Team, ReceivingGoodDetail is like the Player. 1 ReceivingGood/Team, many ReceivingGoodDetail/Player. /* Hibernate: select receivingg0_.id as id9_14_, receivingg0_.creationDate as creation2_9_14_, .. too long Hibernate: select product0_.id as id0_4_, product0_.creationDate as creation2_0_4_, .. too long before persisting the new detail, version of header is : 14 persisting the detail 1c9f81e1-8a49-4189-83f5-4484508e71a7 printing the size of the header : Hibernate: select details0_.receivinggood_id as receivi13_9_8_, details0_.id as id8_, details0_.id as id10_7_, .. too long 7 after persisting the new detail, version of header is : 14 Hibernate: insert into ReceivingGoodDetail (creationDate, modificationDate, usercreate_id, usermodify_id, version, buyQuantity, buyUnit, internalQuantity, internalUnit, product_id, receivinggood_id, supplierLotNumber, id) values (?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?) • Synchronizing an ERWin model with a Visual Studio 2008 GDR 2/2010 db project

    - by Grant Back
I am looking for options to get our vast collection of DB objects across many DBs into source control (TFS 2010). Once we succeed here, we will work toward generating our alter scripts for a particular DB change via TFS build. The problem is, our data architecture group is responsible for maintaining the DB objects (excluding SPs), and they work within a model centric process, via ERWin. What this means, is that they maintain the DBs via ERWin models, and generate alters from them that are used to release changes. In order to achieve our goal of getting the DB objects (not just the ERWin models) into TFS, I believe the best option is to do this via Visual Studio DB projects. From what I can tell, there is very little urgency for CA to continue supporting an integration between ERWin and Visual Studio, that no longer works as of Visual Studio 2008 DB Ed. GDR. If I have been mislead in this regard, please feel free to set me straight. One potential solution is to: Perform changes in the ERWin model. Take the alter script generated from ERWin, and import the script into the appropriate Visual Studio DB project, updating the objects in the in the DB project Check the changed objects in the DB project into TFS. TFS Build executes to generate the alter scripts that will be used to push the changes through our release process. My question is, is this solution viable, or are there any other options?
