  • Windows 7 SP1 now available

    - by guybarrette
    I installed the SP1 for Windows 7 yesterday on two machines.  Short story: nothing to report, everything went fine. Looks like this is a “real” service pack meaning that what it does is install all the fixes and updates released since the Windows 7 release.  It does introduce a few new features.  For a complete list, check the “Notable Changes...” document found here. var addthis_pub="guybarrette";

  • Roger Jennings’ Cloud Computing with the Windows Azure Platform

    - by guybarrette
    Writing and publishing a book about a technology early in its infancy is cruel.  Your subjected to many product changes and your book might be outdated the day it reaches the book stores.  I bought Roger Jennings “Cloud Computing with the Windows Azure Platform” book knowing that it was published in October 2009 and that many changes occurred to the Azure platform in 2009. Right off the bat and from a technology point of view, some chapters are now outdated but don’t reject this book because of that.  In the first few chapters, Jennings does a great job at explaining Cloud Computing and the Azure platform from a business point of view, something that few Azure articles and blogs fail to do right now.  You may want to wait for the second edition and read Jennings’ outstanding Azure focused blog in the meantime.   var addthis_pub="guybarrette";

  • The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs

    - by guybarrette
    A few years go, I got interested in presentation styles after reading Cliff Atkinson’s Beyond Bullet Points book.  At that time, it was obvious that the Microsoft presentation culture was kind of missing the point by having far too many bullet points. I recently picked up Carmine Gallo’s The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs.  I enjoyed this short read (238 pages) book full of presentation tips.  The best advise that I got from reading this book is that you must have an antagonist in your presentation.  This will help the audience visualize and understand the problem (antagonist) and the solution (what you present).  When presenting a technical topic, it is easy to forget to explain what problem is being solved by using this new technology/technique/pattern/API. This is a great read for anyone giving presentations, technical or not.     var addthis_pub="guybarrette";

  • My Mix10 coup de coeur

    - by guybarrette
    If you ask me what was my Mix10 coup de coeur, I’d have to say Bill Buxton.  I was privileged to spend an hour an a half in a small room with about twelve people and Bill Buxton.  This man has such a incredible background and he is so inspiring.  You could really tell that he is a researcher because as he was talking about something, you could see him thinking about something else and trying at the same time to cross reference that. Here’s a list of videos recorded at Mix.  The first one is the shortest one at 9 minutes. Bytes by MSDN (Interviewed by Tim Huckaby, a legend himself) Mix Day 2 Keynote (Last 1/4) An Hour with Bill Buxton (His Mix session) Bill Buxton & Microsoft Student Insiders at MIX10 Channel 9 Live at MIX10: Bill Buxton & Erik Meijer - Perspectives on Design var addthis_pub="guybarrette";
