• Netflix OData API iPhone: Accessing more than just the title

  Netflix just recently announced that they have a new OData API which gives developers access to more of their catalog and is exactly what I've been looking for. Also, on odata.org they have a sample iphone objective-c sdk that accesses the netflix odata api and displays a few movie titles in a tableview with a navigationcontroller. http://odataobjc.codeplex.com/ I'm just messing around right now and I would like to access more than just the catalog titles but I have no idea how to. Preferably, I would like to just push another view controller that will implement a page that can display the synopsis etc. Any suggestions on how to access the other data elements of a movie?   I was searching for an old review on my site today and I noticed that Google is indexing the headline text in my latest article list on every page that it appears, obviously I guess. The problem is if I search for my Dragon's Lair review specifically to my site like this http://www.google.co.za/search?sugexp=chrome,mod=9&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=site%3Alazygamer.net+dragons+lair+review Then it returns a ton of pages that aren't appropriate as they aren't related to the review at all. The reason why I care is that I have a second Dragon's Lair review that was posted years ago and now I can't find it. Is there a way to hint to google that certain text isn't relevant to the actual content on the page? is it a terrible idea?

  I'm working with an outside software vendor to add Google Analytics code to their web app, so that we can track its usage. Their developer suggested that we place the code in an external ".js" file, and he could include that in the layout of his application. The StackOverflow question "Google Analytics: External .js file covers the technical aspect, so apparently tracking is possible via an external file. However, I'm not quite satisfied that this won't have negative implications. Does including the tracking code as an external file affect the statistics collected by Google?

• Unit Testing a Java Chat Application

  I have developed a basic Chat application in Java. It consists of a server and multiple client. The server continually monitors for incoming messages and broadcasts them to all the clients. The client is made up of a Swing GUI with a text area (for messages sent by the server and other clients), a text field (to send Text messages) and a button (SEND). The client also continually monitors for incoming messages from other clients (via the Server). This is achieved with Threads and Event Listeners and the application works as expected. But, how do I go about unit testing my chat application? As the methods involve establishing a connection with the server and sending/receiving messages from the server, I am not sure if these methods should be unit tested. As per my understanding, Unit Testing shouldn't be done for tasks like connecting to a database or network. The few test cases that I could come up with are: 1) The max limit of the text field 2) Client can connect to the Server 3) Server can connect to the Client 4) Client can send message 5) Client can receive message 6) Server can send message 7) Server can receive message 8) Server can accept connections from multiple clients But, since most of the above methods involve some kind of network communication, I cannot perform unit testing. How should I go about unit testing my chat application?

• Facebook API - Get comments

  Our business has a Facebook Fan Page. The fan page doesn't seem to generate any emails to us when updates are made to the page, whether someone adds a new status or someone comments on one of the statuses etc. Currently, we are running a very crude script to grab the content of the page and then use regular expressions to get the information we require. Obviously this is not fool proof and I'm looking into alternatives to this method. I've been looking at the facebook API and wonder if the rest server might be an option. I cannot, however, seem to find out how to return information of fan page statuses and their comments. Is anyone able to direct me how to use the API to retrieve this information. I am an admin of the fan page. The programming language I'm using is PHP. Many thanks.

  My co-worker and I have come across this warning message a couple times recently. I.e., there's no public explanation for it. What does this mean? We can create a usage problem filter in Eclipse to make the message go away, but we don't want to do this if our usage is a legitimate problem. Thanks!

• Weblogic 10.3.0 : Loosing a stateless session bean in the bean pool

  Hi, We have a strange situation where we loose a Stateless SessionBean in a Bean Pool in Weblogic 10.3.0 Since we only have one bean in the pool, this effectively hangs all incoming calls. We do not want more than one instance in the pool because of application restrictions. In the Weblogic admin console, we can see that there are 1 instance in the bean pool, 0 beans in use and 1 waiting incoming request. The question is, what can have caused the system to not send the request to the one obviously free bean instance? This happens after several hours and over 100000 incoming requests, and the same scenario worked fine in the old weblogic 8 environment.   I've build a command-line tool in Java, which I would now like to profile with YourKit. I launch the command-line tool with something like: $ java -classpath .:foo.bar.jar com.foobar.tools.TheTool arg1 arg2 arg3 It runs to completion in less than 2 seconds. Is there a YourKit API that I could add to my tool that would cause it to block until I've connected with YourKit? Is there a YourKit API or a java command-line option that would create a profiling "snapshot" that I could load and analyze later (after the command-line tool has completed) with YourKit?

• Facebook API friends_get is extremely slow

  I have a PHP application running in iFrame mode. I am rendering an <fb:multi-friend-selector condensed="true"> inside of <fb:serverfbml> tags. This is inside a PHP file that calls a function that gets a list of user IDs using $facebook->api_client->friends_get();. The multi-friend selector renders just fine, but, when I leave the friend_get() call uncommented, the page takes between 15-20 seconds to load (confirmed with Firebug)! The goal is to limit the number of users displayed in the selector by building a list of user ids not to display, for use in the friend selector's exclude_ids parameter. And since it's "exclude_ids" and not "include_ids", I can't think of a way of getting around this api call. It seems to me there must be something I can do to make the api call faster, because I've seen friend selectors that load much more quickly.

  I am trying to create a web service, my tools of trade are: ** Axis2, Eclipse, Tomcat, Ant ** I need to create a web service from Code, i.e. Write a basic java class which will have the methods to be declared in the WSDL. Then use java2WSDL.sh to create my WSDL. So, is this approach correct: Write my Java class with actual business logic package packageNamel; public class Hello{ public void World(String name) { SOP("Hello" + name); } } Now, when I pass this Hello.java to java2WSDL.sh, this will give me the WSDL. Finally, I will write the services.xml file, and create the Hello.aar with following dir structure: Hello.aar packageName Hello.class META-INF services.xml MANIFEST.MF Hello.WSDL Now, I assume, my service will be deployed when I put the aar in tomcat1/webapps/axis2/WEB-INF/services But, here comes my problem, HOW DO I ACCESS THE METHOD World(String name)???!!, i.e. I am clueless about the client code! Having followed all of the instructions from Android, my java file will not recognize the "MapActivity" or the import statements to include the needed api.   Hi Everyone, I was wondering if someone could do me massive favour.. I really don't understand how to make use of API's - so I was wondering if, using Basecamp as an example, someone could talk me though the basics. So far I have an application with a dashboard controller/view, I have put basecamp.rb into my /lib directory, added the following to my application_controller: def basecamp_connect Basecamp.establish_connection!('XXXXXX.basecamphq.com', 'USER', 'PASS', false) @basecamp = Basecamp.new end Obviously changing the required parts to my credentials. Next up I have added the following to my dashboard_controller: def index Basecamp::TodoList.find(:all) end Next I presume I have to somehow list the Todo's on the dashboard using some sort of loop. Am I doing the right thing, if so - how on earth do I display all the todo items and if not - what am I doing wrong/missing. It doesn't have to be todo's, anything from basecamp or any other popular API service would be a good start. It's just that I happen to have a basecamp account! Thanks, Danny

• Connection details & timeouts in a java web service client

  Hello fellow Coders, I have to implement a webservice client to a given WSDL file. I used the SDK's 'wsimport' tool to create Java classes from the WSDL as well as a class that wrap's the webservice's only method (enhanceAddress(auth, param, address)) into a simple java method. So far, so good. The webservice is functional and returning results correcty. The code looks like this: try { EnhancedAddressList uniservResponse = getWebservicePort().enhanceAddress(m_auth, m_param, uniservAddress); //Where the Port^ is the HTTP Soap 1.2 Endpoint }catch (Throwable e) { throw new AddressValidationException("Error during uniserv webservice request.", e); } The Problem now: I need to get Information about the connection and any error that might occur in order to populate various JMX values (such as COUNT_READ_TIMEOUT, COUNT_CONNECT_TIMEOUT, ...) Unfortunately, the method does not officially throw any Exceptions, so in order to get details about a ConnectException, i need to use getCause() on the ClientTransportException that will be thrown. Even worse: I tried to test the read timeout value, but there is none. I changed the service's location in the wsdl file to post the request to a php script that simply waits forever and does not return. Guess what: The web service client does not time out but waits forever as well (I killed the app after 30+ minutes of waiting). That is not an option for my application as i eventually run out of tcp connections if some of them get 'stuck'. The enhanceAddress(auth, param, address) method is not implemented but annotated with javax.jws.* Annotations, meaning that i cannot see/change/inspect the code that is actually executed. Do i have any option but to throw the whole wsimport/javax.jsw-stuff away and implement my own soap client?

• Google App Engine - Calling getSession().invalidate(); causes app engine to act weird.

  When I call hreq.getSession().invalidate(); app engine slows down tremendously. I looked at appstats and saw that on a page where no database calls are made, it was calling memcache.get and datastore.get 23 times each. The stack trace of these calls showed that it was being called from getSession(). This only happens on the production server. Every time I make a request to a page, it makes a bunch of memcache and datastore calls. This slow down goes away though when i restart my browser. When I changed the code to simply set the isLoggedIn property of the session to false, rather than calling hreq.getSession().invalidate();, everything was fine. As a test, I didn't invalidate my session, but I changed the value of my browser's session cookie, and the app engine exhibited the same behavior. Is this a bug with the app engine?

  I was uploading the data to App Engine (not dev server) through loader class and remote api, and I hit the quota in the middle of a CSV file. Based on logs and progress sqllite db, how can I select remaining portion of data to be uploaded? Going through tens of records to determine which was and which was not transfered, is not appealing task, so I look for some way to limit the number of record I need to check.
