  • [Java] - Problem having my main thread sleeping

    - by Chris
    I'm in a Java class and our assignment is to let us explore threads in Java. So far so good except for this one this one problem. And I believe that could be because of my lack of understanding how Java threads work at the moment. I have the main thread of execution which spawns new threads. In the main thread of execution in main() I am calling Thread.sleep(). When I do I get an Unhandled exception type InterruptedException. I am unsure of why I am getting this? I thought this was because I needed a reference to the main thread so I went ahead and made a reference to it via Thread.currentThread(). Is this not the way to have the thread sleep? What I need to do is have the main thread wait/sleep/delay till it does it required work again. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Can DBRefs contain additional fields?

    - by Soviut
    I've encountered several situations when using MongoDB that require the use of DBRefs. However, I'd also like to cache some fields from the referenced document in the DBRef itself. {$ref:'user', $id:'10285102912A', username:'Soviut'} For example, I may want to have the username available even though the user document is referenced. This would provide me all the benefits of a single document approach; Faster querying and eliminating the need to do manual dereferencing in my code. While at the same time allowing me to use references where they make sense. The idea being that when the referenced document is updated (a user changes their name, for example) my business layer can automatically update all the documents that reference it. Ultimately, I'm wondering if it's considered good form to store additional fields on my DBRefs? Will it break anything? Will I lose my data each time a reference is rewritten? Will drivers like pymongo support it?

  • Calling methods within same Javwscript class [Prototype]

    - by eldeejay
    I've created a class in Javscript using the prototype Class.Create complete with the initialize function and a few other functions. However, in one of my functions I want to reference another function in the same class, but cannot seem to get the syntax correct. e.g. var sampleClass = Class.create({ initialize: function(){ //do the init work here }, functionA: function(){ //do some more stuff here } functionB: function(){ //Do some stuff functionA() } } I've tried calling functionA() , this.functionA() but nothing works I just get errors. I know how to call the functions externally when the class has been instantiated, but not reference a function from within the class itself. Thanks

  • VBA Excel To SqlServer

    - by adrianm
    What is the best way to write VBA code to connect to SQL Server 2005 from Excel? The users of the excel file might run XP, Vista, Win7 and I want to prevent driver installation as much as possible. My understanding is that XP uses MDAC while Vista/Win7 uses DAC. Does that mean that a reference to MDAC 2.8 will not work on a Vista machine and the other way around? Will my VBA code work on both if I don't add a reference and use late binding, e.g. CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")?

  • Multiple many-to-many JOINs in a single mysql query without Cartesian Product

    - by VWD
    At the moment I can get the results I need with two seperate SELECT statements SELECT COUNT(rl.refBiblioID) FROM biblioList bl LEFT JOIN refList rl ON bl.biblioID = rl.biblioID GROUP BY bl.biblioID SELECT GROUP_CONCAT( CONCAT_WS( ':', al.lastName, al.firstName ) ORDER BY al.authorID ) FROM biblioList bl LEFT JOIN biblio_author ba ON ba.biblioID = bl.biblioID JOIN authorList al ON al.authorID = ba.authorID GROUP BY bl.biblioID Combining them like this however SELECT GROUP_CONCAT( CONCAT_WS( ':', al.lastName, al.firstName ) ORDER BY al.authorID ), COUNT(rl.refBiblioID) FROM biblioList bl LEFT JOIN biblio_author ba ON ba.biblioID = bl.biblioID JOIN authorList al ON al.authorID = ba.authorID LEFT JOIN refList rl ON bl.biblioID = rl.biblioID GROUP BY bl.biblioID causes the author result column to have duplicate names. How can I get the desired results from one SELECT statement without using DISTINCT? With subqueries?

  • Using jQuery copy plugin from CSS Tricks

    - by ftntravis
    I'm trying to use this plugin that CSS Tricks suggests. http://css-tricks.com/snippets/jquery/duplicate-plugin/ Shouldn't the following allow me to click a button and create a copy? $.fn.duplicate = function(count, cloneEvents) { var tmp = []; for ( var i = 0; i < count; i++ ) { $.merge( tmp, this.clone( cloneEvents ).get() ); } return this.pushStack( tmp ); }; $('.copy').click(function() { $('#form li').duplicate(5).appendTo('#form'); }; It's not working when I click it :(

  • Accelerated C++, problem 5-6 (copying values from inside a vector to the front)

    - by Darel
    Hello, I'm working through the exercises in Accelerated C++ and I'm stuck on question 5-6. Here's the problem description: (somewhat abbreviated, I've removed extraneous info.) 5-6. Write the extract_fails function so that it copies the records for the passing students to the beginning of students, and then uses the resize function to remove the extra elements from the end of students. (students is a vector of student structures. student structures contain an individual student's name and grades.) More specifically, I'm having trouble getting the vector.insert function to properly copy the passing student structures to the start of the vector students. Here's the extract_fails function as I have it so far (note it doesn't resize the vector yet, as directed by the problem description; that should be trivial once I get past my current issue.) // Extract the students who failed from the "students" vector. void extract_fails(vector<Student_info>& students) { typedef vector<Student_info>::size_type str_sz; typedef vector<Student_info>::iterator iter; iter it = students.begin(); str_sz i = 0, count = 0; while (it != students.end()) { // fgrade tests wether or not the student failed if (!fgrade(*it)) { // if student passed, copy to front of vector students.insert(students.begin(), it, it); // tracks of the number of passing students(so we can properly resize the array) count++; } cout << it->name << endl; // output to verify that each student is iterated to it++; } } The code compiles and runs, but the students vector isn't adding any student structures to its front. My program's output displays that the students vector is unchanged. Here's my complete source code, followed by a sample input file (I redirect input from the console by typing " < grades" after the compiled program name at the command prompt.) #include <iostream> #include <string> #include <algorithm> // to get the declaration of `sort' #include <stdexcept> // to get the declaration of `domain_error' #include <vector> // to get the declaration of `vector' //driver program for grade partitioning examples using std::cin; using std::cout; using std::endl; using std::string; using std::domain_error; using std::sort; using std::vector; using std::max; using std::istream; struct Student_info { std::string name; double midterm, final; std::vector<double> homework; }; bool compare(const Student_info&, const Student_info&); std::istream& read(std::istream&, Student_info&); std::istream& read_hw(std::istream&, std::vector<double>&); double median(std::vector<double>); double grade(double, double, double); double grade(double, double, const std::vector<double>&); double grade(const Student_info&); bool fgrade(const Student_info&); void extract_fails(vector<Student_info>& v); int main() { vector<Student_info> vs; Student_info s; string::size_type maxlen = 0; while (read(cin, s)) { maxlen = max(maxlen, s.name.size()); vs.push_back(s); } sort(vs.begin(), vs.end(), compare); extract_fails(vs); // display the new, modified vector - it should be larger than // the input vector, due to some student structures being // added to the front of the vector. cout << "count: " << vs.size() << endl << endl; vector<Student_info>::iterator it = vs.begin(); while (it != vs.end()) cout << it++->name << endl; return 0; } // Extract the students who failed from the "students" vector. void extract_fails(vector<Student_info>& students) { typedef vector<Student_info>::size_type str_sz; typedef vector<Student_info>::iterator iter; iter it = students.begin(); str_sz i = 0, count = 0; while (it != students.end()) { // fgrade tests wether or not the student failed if (!fgrade(*it)) { // if student passed, copy to front of vector students.insert(students.begin(), it, it); // tracks of the number of passing students(so we can properly resize the array) count++; } cout << it->name << endl; // output to verify that each student is iterated to it++; } } bool compare(const Student_info& x, const Student_info& y) { return x.name < y.name; } istream& read(istream& is, Student_info& s) { // read and store the student's name and midterm and final exam grades is >> s.name >> s.midterm >> s.final; read_hw(is, s.homework); // read and store all the student's homework grades return is; } // read homework grades from an input stream into a `vector<double>' istream& read_hw(istream& in, vector<double>& hw) { if (in) { // get rid of previous contents hw.clear(); // read homework grades double x; while (in >> x) hw.push_back(x); // clear the stream so that input will work for the next student in.clear(); } return in; } // compute the median of a `vector<double>' // note that calling this function copies the entire argument `vector' double median(vector<double> vec) { typedef vector<double>::size_type vec_sz; vec_sz size = vec.size(); if (size == 0) throw domain_error("median of an empty vector"); sort(vec.begin(), vec.end()); vec_sz mid = size/2; return size % 2 == 0 ? • Humor in code

    - by pfranza
    When you are writing code or naming products, which sources of cultural references are you most likely to draw from? Which reference sources do you think are more likely to be universally understood? For example when findbugs sees that you've implemented equals() without overriding hashCode() it suggest that you implement it by returning 42 (a reference from HHGTTG) Or why we have big endian vs little endian encoding, referencing Gulliver's Travels Not that we should act unprofessionally with our code, but if you going to tell a person that they could only (watch/read/...) one (book/movie/show/...) which one would allow them to 'get' the most jokes?

  • How can I return a sql select into a sql variable

    - by Matt
    Hi, I'm trying to put the results of a SELECT into a variable and loop through the results to manipulate that data, all in the same stored proceedure... Here's what I have so far: DECLARE @i int @Result = (SELECT * FROM UserImport) SET @i = 0 WHILE @i < (SELECT Count(@Result) As Count) BEGIN /* Do Stuff */ END I know I'm way off because it's saying @Result was not declared, but I'm not sure how to declare a variable to be able to hold the results of a SELECT statement. Can anyone tell me where i'm going wrong and how to fix it? Thanks, Matt

  • Isn't the C++ standard library backward-compatible?

    - by Chris Metzler
    Hi. I'm working on a 64-bit Linux system, trying to build some code that depends on third-party libraries for which I have binaries. During linking, I get a stream of undefined reference errors for one of the libraries, indicating that the linker couldn't resolve references to standard C++ functions/classes, e.g.: librxio.a(EphReader.o): In function `gpstk::EphReader::read_fic_data(std::basic_string<char, std::char_traits<char>, std::allocator<char> > const&)': EphReader.cpp:(.text+0x27c): undefined reference to `std::basic_ostream<char, std::char_traits<char> >& std::__ostream_insert<char, std::char_traits<char> >(std::basic_ostream<char, std::char_traits<char> >&, char const*, long)' EphReader.cpp:(.text+0x4e8): undefined reference to `std::basic_ostream<char, std::char_traits<char> >& std::__ostream_insert<char, std::char_traits<char> >(std::basic_ostream<char, std::char_traits<char> >&, char const*, long)' I'm not really a C++ programmer, but this looks to me like it can't find the standard library. Doing some more research, I got the following when I looked at librxio's dependency for the standard library: $ ldd librxio.so.16.0 ./librxio.so.16.0: /usr/lib64/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by ./librxio.so.16.0) libm.so.6 => /lib64/libm.so.6 (0x00002aaaaad45000) libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/lib64/libstdc++.so.6 (0x00002aaaaafc8000) libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib64/libgcc_s.so.1 (0x00002aaaab2c8000) libc.so.6 => /lib64/libc.so.6 (0x00002aaaab4d7000) /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x0000555555554000) So I read that as saying that librxio (one of the third-party libraries) requires at least v3.4.9 of the standard library. But the version I have installed is 4.1.2: $ rpm -qa | grep libstdc compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-61.x86_64 libstdc++-devel-4.1.2-14.el5.i386 libstdc++-devel-4.1.2-14.el5.x86_64 libstdc++-4.1.2-14.el5.x86_64 libstdc++-4.1.2-14.el5.i386 Shouldn't this work? The shared object major number is 6, same as for v3.4.9. At this level, shouldn't this be backward compatible? It seems like the third-party library is looking for an earlier version of the standard library than what I have installed; but isn't there backward compatibility between versions with the same major number for the shared library? Again, I'm not really a C++ programmer; but I don't see what the problem is. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Building a subquery with ARel in Rails3

    - by Christopher
    I am trying to build this query in ARel: SELECT FLOOR(AVG(num)) FROM ( SELECT COUNT(attendees.id) AS num, meetings.club_id FROM `meetings` INNER JOIN `attendees` ON `attendees`.`meeting_id` = `meetings`.`id` WHERE (`meetings`.club_id = 1) GROUP BY meetings.id) tmp GROUP BY tmp.club_id It returns the average number of attendees per meeting, per club. (a club has many meetings and a meeting has many attendees) So far I have (declared in class Club < ActiveRecord::Base): num_attendees = meetings.select("COUNT(attendees.id) AS num").joins(:attendees).group('meetings.id') Arel::Table.new('tmp', self.class.arel_engine).from(num_attendees).project('FLOOR(AVG(num))').group('tmp.club_id').to_sql but, I am getting the error: undefined method `visit_ActiveRecord_Relation' for #<Arel::Visitors::MySQL:0x9b42180> The documentation for generating non trivial ARel queries is a bit hard to come by. I have been using http://rdoc.info/github/rails/arel/master/frames Am I approaching this incorrectly? Or am I a few methods away from a solution?

  • Can you use back references in the pattern part of a regular expression?

    - by Camsoft
    I there a way to back reference in the regular expression pattern? Example input string: Here is "quoted text" some quoted text. Say I want to pull out the quoted text, I could create the following expression: "([^"]+)" This regular expression would match quoted text. Say I want it to also support single quotes, I could change the expression to: ["']([^"']+)["'] But what if the input string has a mixture of quotes say Here is 'quoted text" some quoted text. I would not want the regex to match. Currently the regex in the second example would still match. What I would like to be able to do is if the first quote is a double quote then the closing quote must be a double. And if the start quote is single quote then the closing quote must be single. Can I use a back reference to achieve this?

  • wcf generated classes and validation application block attributes

    - by Shaboboo
    Hi, I'm new to the validation application block and trying to use it with wcf... I have a wcf service that has data objects with validation rules defined with attributes, using the validation application block . On my client side (WPF), I have a service reference. When I update the service reference the generated classes do not have the validation rules attributes in them. How can I get the rules from the service? Am I missing some step, or is it not possible?

  • Parallel For Loop - Problems when adding to a List - Possible .Net Bugs

    - by Kevin Crowell
    I am having some issues involving Parallel for loops and adding to a List. The problem is, the same code may generate different output at different times. I have set up some test code below. In this code, I create a List of 10,000 int values. 1/10th of the values will be 0, 1/10th of the values will be 1, all the way up to 1/10th of the values being 9. After setting up this List, I setup a Parallel for loop that iterates through the list. If the current number is 0, I add a value to a new List. After the Parallel for loop completes, I output the size of the list. The size should always be 1,000. Most of the time, the correct answer is given. However, I have seen 3 possible incorrect outcomes occur: The size of the list is less than 1,000 An IndexOutOfRangeException occurs @ doubleList.Add(0.0); An ArgumentException occurs @ doubleList.Add(0.0); The message for the ArgumentException given was: Destination array was not long enough. Check destIndex and length, and the array's lower bounds. What could be causing the errors? Is this a .Net bug? Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening? Please try the code for yourself. If you do not get an error, try it a few times. Please also note that you probably will not see any errors using a single-core machine. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Threading.Tasks; namespace ParallelTest { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { List<int> intList = new List<int>(); List<double> doubleList = new List<double>(); for (int i = 0; i < 250; i++) { intList.Clear(); doubleList.Clear(); for (int j = 0; j < 10000; j++) { intList.Add(j % 10); } Parallel.For(0, intList.Count, j => { if (intList[j] == 0) { doubleList.Add(0.0); } }); if (doubleList.Count != 1000) { Console.WriteLine("On iteration " + i + ": List size = " + doubleList.Count); } } Console.WriteLine("\nPress any key to exit."); Console.ReadKey(); } } }

  • SQL - Counting sets of Field-B values for each Field-A value

    - by potrnd
    Hello, First of all sorry that I could not think of a more descriptive title. What I want to do is the following using only SQL: I have some lists of strings, list1, list2 and list3. I have a dataset that contains two interesting columns, A and B. Column A contains a TransactionID and column B contains an ItemID. Naturally, there can be multiple rows that share the same TransactionIDs. I need to catch those transactions that have at least one ItemID in each and every list (list1 AND list2 AND list3). I also need to count how many times does that happen for each transaction. [EDIT] That is, count how many full sets of ItemIDs there are for each TransactionID", "Full Set" being any element of the list1 with any element of the list2 with any element of the list3 I hope that makes enough sense, perhaps I will be able to explain it better with a clear head. Thanks in advance

What is wrong with it?

  • Batch files - number of command line arguments

    - by pyko
    Just converting some shell scripts into batch files and there is one thing I can't seem to find...and that is a simple count of the number of command line arguments. eg. if you have: myapp foo bar In Shell: $# - 2 $* - foo bar $0 - myapp $1 - foo $2 - bar In batch ?? - 2 <---- what command?! %* - foo bar %0 - myapp %1 - foo %2 - bar So I've looked around, and either I'm looking in the wrong spot or I'm blind, but I can't seem to find a way to get a count of number of command line arguments passed in. Is there a command similar to shell's "$#" for batch files? ps. the closest i've found is to iterate through the %1s and use 'shift', but I need to refernece %1,%2 etc later in the script so that's no good.

  • PHP PDO: Fetching data as objects - properties assigned BEFORE __construct is called. Is this correc

    - by Erik
    The full question should be "Is this correct or is it some bug I can't count on?" I've been working with PDO more and in particular playing with fetching data directly into objects. While doing so I discovered this: If I fetch data directly into an object like this: $STH = $DBH->prepare('SELECT first_name, address from people WHERE 1'); $obj = $STH->fetchAll(PDO::FETCH_CLASS, 'person'); and have an object like this: class person { public $first_name; public $address; function __construct() { $this->first_name = $this->first_name . " is the name"; } } It shows me that the properties are being assigned before the __construct is being called -- because the names all have " is the name" appended. Is this some bug (in which case I can't/won't count on it) or is this The Way It Should Be. Because it's really quite a nice thing the way it works currently.

  • Visual Studio Pre build events and batch set

    - by helloworld922
    Hi, I'm trying to create call a batch file which sets a bunch of environment variables prior to building. The batch file looks something like this (it's automatically generated before-hand to detect ATI Stream SDK or NVidia CUDA toolkit): set OCL_LIBS_X86="%ATISTREAMSDKROOT%libs\x86" set OCL_LIBS_X64="%ATISTREAMSDKROOT%libs\x86_64" set OCL_INCLUDE="%ATISTREAMSDKROOT%include" However, the rest of the build doesn't seem to have access to these variables, so when I try to reference $(OCL_INCLUDE) in the C/C++GeneralAdditional include directories, it will first give me warning that environment variable $(OCL_INCLUDE) was not found, and when I try to include CL/cl.hpp the compile will fail with: fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'CL/cl.hpp': No such file or directory I know that I could put these variables into the registry if I wanted to access them from the visual studio GUI, but I would really prefer not to do this. Is there a way to to get these environment variables to stick after the pre-build events? I can't reference $(ATISTREAMSDKROOT) directly because the project must be able to build for both ATI Stream and NVidia Cuda.

  • CORBA Naming Service returns incorrect location of a registered object

    - by dave-keiture
    Hi experts, I have a simple setup with several objects registered at orbd. Remote client initializes connection to the ORB and tries to resolve a reference to the Naming Serice (IDL:omg.org/CosNaming/NamingContextExt:1.0). So far it's all fine - ORB returns giop.iiop.host/giop.iiop.port pair. When reference to the Naming Service is resolved, client tries to resolve_str() one of the registered objects. This time, Naming Service returns completely different pair giop.iiop.host/giop.iiop.port for the object (not the host/port of a Naming Service) - I don't know anything about them. When client tries to call a method on a resolved object, it fails, as the host/port pair is not configured in the firewall. Could you please explain, why it's happening? Thanks in advance!

  • ForceContext Queries method twice?

    - by azz0r
    Hello, I'm doing a per minute script, to output the xml that a server will read, I am used forceContext. <?php class My_Controller_Action_Helper_ForceContext extends Zend_Controller_Action_Helper_ContextSwitch { public function initContext($format = null) { $request = $this->getRequest(); $action = $request->getActionName(); $context = $this->getActionContexts($action); //check if this is the only context if(count($context) === 1) { $format = $context[0]; } return parent::initContext($format); } } class Video_PerMinuteController extends Zend_Controller_Action { function init() { $contextSwitch = $this->_helper->getHelper('ForceContext'); $contextSwitch->addActionContext('transaction', 'xml')->initContext(); In my method, it gets the current minute count, adds 1, then saves. So I can clearly see when its accessed more than once in a minute. If I comment out the second contextSwitch line, it only goes up 1, if Its not, it displays the xml page but adds 2 minutes (being called twice somehow). Any ideas?
