• SharePoint 2010: Architecture and Planning information

  Recently I have been delivering Design and Planning Sessions at client sites, and as of recent SharePoint 2010 has been part of that mix. After the activity that goes on during those sessions getting towards the end of them is always a cross roads for clients.  Why?  Because it is time to kick the wheels.  Remind them, and remember, this is not a 1 or 4 weeks ordeal.  This has to be very well planned.   I'm running apt-get update, and I see errors like W: GPG error: http://us.archive.ubuntu.com precise Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 40976EAF437D05B5 Ubuntu Archive Automatic Signing Key <[email protected]> It's not hard to find instructions on how to fix these problems, for instance by asking for the new keys with apt-key adv --recv-keys or rebuilding the cache; so I'm not asking about how to fix these. But why is this the right thing to do? Why is "oh, I need new keys? Cool, go get new keys" not just defeating the purpose of having a signed repository in the first place? Are the keys signed by a master key that apt-key checks? Should we be doing some additional validation to ensure that we're getting legitimate keys?

• SharePoint Database security corruption

  Hello, One time I faced an issue where my customer is having an HTTP 500 internal server error while trying to access any SharePoint site. The problem appeared once he moved back and forth with inheriting/breaking inheritance of permissions over different levels in the site collection. "Security corruption in database" sounds very tough for a customer running a production portal with a backup that can make him lose around 3 weeks of valuable data. However, the solution tends not to be that hard, there's an stsadm command that help us detect the corruption and even delete the orphaned items causing the corruption. Follow these steps: a. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME                and it returned some orphaned items.            b. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME -deletecorruption                and it removed the orphaned items. • About to graduage from good school without any progamming skills

  Not sure if it is good place to ask this question, but found this section to be suitable. I am about to graduate from good school (in the US) with Computer Science degree, having good grades and high GPA. I have no freaking clue how to write a good program, how to properly test it... nada, zero. We were never been tough how to write software. Ye, sure the Comp. Architecture class is important, and I can tell you a lot about how MIPS processor works, and I can tell you about Binary Trees and Red-Black Trees and running time of operations in Big Oh, but it has nothing to do with programming in "real" life. For god sake, none of my classmates know how to use STLs or write templated code !!! To be honest, I found that many of my classes to be waste of time. What should I do ? How to step into real life and learn how to program ?

• A tale of UAC on a Windows 7 Development Machine

  This week I faced an interesting problem on a Windows 7 Development PC. I have run MakeLog (http://commondata.codeplex.com/releases/view/13206) sucessfully on my PC but my colleague could not run it sucessfully. Both of us are local administrators, so what I could do on my PC, he should have been able to do. The cure was to turn UAC completely off and re-boot. Once re-booted, the installation ran without incident. While I would never suggest turning off UAC normally, on development PCs, it is a liability as it stops many normal operations and occasionaly without giving a prompt.

  I have recently discovered a website that is a must have for any developer who has struggled with picking the colors for their web site:  http://colorschemedesigner.com/ You get several choices to determine how to specify the colors. This option brings in a complimentary color in various shades along with the main color that you select on the color wheel. You also have the option of specifying various adjustments to the schema. You can make it pastel, more contrast, less contrast, gray tones, etc. You can also view a preview page as a light page or a dark page to see how the colors might be applied.  Once you have everything the way you want it, you can switch over to the final tab and get the color list. Now none of us have an excuse for questionable color combinations.

• How to morph from a programmer noob to a guru?

  I have been a programmer for two years, and i am getting hard to level up my skill especially working at legacy code maintenance right now. I think working hard is not enough to elevate my skill, because there are ton of opensource around us, the preoject i have been involved are all mixture of opensources --- from front end to back end from presentation tier to business logic tier. My work is just gluing all these together or something fewer complex which is to collect data from UI to logic module then retrieve the data processed and put it to UI. Sometime there is a need to add some simple logic(like assembling the data to a form that fit business logic interface) while transport data. Could you please give me any suggestion what should i do on the side to improve my skill? Thanks!
