• Unable to start Tomcat 6.x when Mac OS X 10.6 is boot up

  I am using Mac OS X 10.6 and installed MAMP and Tomcat. My Tomcat is installed in /Users/(userID)/Tomcat I can start Tomcat server in Terminal without a problem But it cannot be started automatically when Mac OS X is boot up. • Microsoft IntelliMouse episodic pauses

  I have a Microsoft IntelliMouse connected via USB to a computer (directly, NOT via hub) currently running Ubuntu 11.10, but this problem also existed before we upgraded from 10.10. Every now and then (apparently randomly) the computer "pauses" for anything up to a few seconds. • Copying photos from camera stalls - how to track down issue?

  When I copy files from my camera (connected via USB) to the SSD in my laptop a few files get copied and then the copy stalls. I'm not sure why, any ideas or things to investigate appreciated, or bug reports to go and look at. I have read this answer - the camera (Canon 40D in case that matters) mounts fine using gvfs. I can see the photos in Nautilus, or in the terminal (in /run/user/username/gvfs/... ) and I can copy a few photos, but not many. Using the terminal or Nautilus the process hangs until the camera goes to sleep. Digikam fails to copy any at all, as does Rapid Photo Downloader. Shotwell did manage it in the end, but that is very much a work around for me. I have disabled thumbnail generation by nautilus. Load average stays about 1 while this is happening, while CPU usage is half idle, half wait (and a little user/sys for other programs). None of the programs at the top of the cpu list in top are related to copying photos. • DPKG errors after upgrade to 12.10

• Help setting up wireless in Ubuntu 13.04

  I'm having problems connecting my WIFI in Ubuntu 13.04 . So I was wondering if filling in the data manually ie: the IPv4, IPv6, the SSID and BSSID info etc. I did try this before but maybe I put in the wrong data or maybe not enough. Would that make it work? I just don't know how to find out some of the data you need to put in? I'm new and it's confusing. Does anyone know the solution? • Does the WMI event Win32_VolumeChangeEvent work on Windows XP

  I'm trying to use the following c# code to detect the attached/removed event of usb mass storage devices. I'm using the Win32_VolumeChangeEvent. // Initialize an event watcher and subscribe to events that match this query var _watcher = new ManagementEventWatcher("select * from Win32_VolumeChangeEvent"); _watcher.EventArrived += OnDeviceChanged; _watcher.Start(); void OnDeviceChanged(object sender, EventArrivedEventArgs args) { Console.WriteLine(args.NewEvent.GetText(TextFormat.Mof)); } The problem is that this works fine on Vista but it doesn't work on XP at all (no events received). The Microsoft documentation says that this should work (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa394516(VS.85).aspx). I googled for this quite a while and found other that have this problem too. But I also found a couple of articles which claim that this kind of query (mostly in vbscript) works with XP. But I cannot find some offical information from microsoft for this issue and I can't believe that Microsoft have overlooked this issue for three service packs. So my question is: has anybody used the Win32_VolumeChangeEvent with success on XP or can provide a link/explanation why it shouldn't work on XP?

• Ubuntu 11.10 is on external HDD, how to boot (using grub4dos), and which initrd and vmlinuz to use?

  I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on external HDD. How can I boot it? I used grub4dos before, and it worked with Fedora distributions. Problem I have now is that I don't know which initrd and vmlinuz files to use. Tried with one I have in /boot directory, but booting did not worked... Can you give me some ideas what to try, do i have to use different initrd and vmlinuz, or I can solve this with other solutions. Also, just to mention that boot goes to BusyBox v1.18.4 command prompt. Thank you in advance!

• Make a USB Device, Control It In Java

  I'm thinking about making a physical controller (device?) with knobs, buttons, and LEDs. I'd like to interact with it using Java (respond to the knobs, light up LEDs, etc). The reason I mention Java is two-fold: first, I know Java well1. Second, I've written the rest of the program I need to interface with in Java (though there are ways to talk to the Java program from another language). I would like the device to connect via USB and be (computer-)platform independent. I haven't the slightest idea of where to start, except to start reading the Arduino website. Is this my best/only option? Is there something better suited for communicating with Java? Note: I know that Arduino has something to do with Java (not sure what), but it seems like code must be written in a subset of C. How would I get moving on this topic? 1 - No laughter, please.

• Read data from an Android USB attachment

  Is there anyway to read data from an attachment through the USB port on an Android device? In particular, an EKG. Most the work can be done by the hardware of the device to simplify the output to a single number, a voltage reading. If its not possible, what about modifying an accessory that can already communicate with an android device? Thinking of devices that attach to android phones, what about sending the data as an audio signal to be read as the microphone from a headset and then analyzing the audio signal to convert it to a number that can be used to display a value. Any ideas on how to make this work?

• Hyper-V Boot failure on VHD made with Acronis?

  hoping someone can advise on my problem, I am running Hyper-V core and trying to create my first VM for testing purposes. Using Acronis True Image echo server with UR I converted a Seerver 2000 tib to VHD. I then copied this across to the Hyper-V local drive and created a new VM pointing the hard drive to the vhd image. When I boot this up all I get is "Boot failure. Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot media in selected Boot device". The original server had SCSI disks, the Hyper-V server doesn't, but I have ensured that it boots from an IDE disk and that it is in fact booting from that not the CD. I can only imagine this is caused by the SCSI disks on VHD but cannot for the life of me work out how to fix, I have several of these I need to do so starting to worry now! I can confirm that when I did this from tib to vmdk it worked first time using VMware on a laptop. Any help very much appreciated. Gary

• How to disable Power off/Power on sound on Android phone? [closed]

  My Android phone (Android v.2.1) produces loud sound both before Power off and after Power on (boot) is being completed. I don't want to turn the sound off before reboot/powering it off and to turn sound on after reboot every time I'm restarting my phone. I just want to get rid of these sounds forever :-) How can I do this (maybe executing some script, changing some properties... preferably without rooting my phone)? Update: Thank you Christopher Orr! I've also found some information that partially allows to achieve what I'm looking for (on androidforums.com): "if you are going into SettingsSound & displayNotification ringtone that sets your notification tone for app updates, power on (rebooting) etc. If you want to change notification for messages you would have to go into messaging and then hit the menu key for notification option. You can do the same for email accounts as well." So I disabled Power on/off sounds (plus something else... but I didn't notice undesired side effect yet...) with built-in settings.

• How can I limit the cache used by copying so there is still memory available for other cache?

  Basic situation: I am copying some NTFS disks in openSuSE. Each one is 2TB. When I do this, the system runs slow. My guesses: I believe it is likely due to caching. Linux decides to discard useful cache (eg. kde4 bloat, virtual machine disks, LibreOffice binaries, Thunderbird binaries, etc.) and instead fill all available memory (24 GB total) with stuff from the copying disks, which will be read only once, then written and never used again. So then any time I use these apps (or kde4), the disk needs to be read again, and reading the bloat off the disk again makes things freeze/hiccup. Due to the cache being gone and the fact that these bloated applications need lots of cache, this makes the system horribly slow. Since it is USB,the disk and disk controller are not the bottleneck, so using ionice does not make it faster. I believe it is the cache rather than just the motherboard going too slow, because if I stop everything copying, it still runs choppy for a while until it recaches everything. And if I restart the copying, it takes a minute before it is choppy again. But also, I can limit it to around 40 MB/s, and it runs faster again (not because it has the right things cached, but because the motherboard busses have lots of extra bandwidth for the system disks). I can fully accept a performance loss from my motherboard's IO capability being completely consumed (which is 100% used, meaning 0% wasted power which makes me happy), but I can't accept that this caching mechanism performs so terribly in this specific use case. # free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 24731556 24531876 199680 0 8834056 12998916 -/+ buffers/cache: 2698904 22032652 Swap: 4194300 24764 4169536 I also tried the same thing on Ubuntu, which causes a total system hang instead. ;) And to clarify, I am not asking how to leave memory free for the "system", but for "cache". I know that cache memory is automatically given back to the system when needed, but my problem is that it is not reserved for caching of specific things. Question: Is there some way to tell these copy operations to limit memory usage so some important things remain cached, and therefore any slowdowns are a result of normal disk usage and not rereading the same commonly used files? For example, is there a setting of max memory per process/user/file system allowed to be used as cache/buffers?

  My friend just updated her Windows Vista to service pack 1, or tried to. Now it wont boot up. Just black screen, some errors etc. I tried googling it and lots of people had this problem it seems. Anyone find a fix for it? I read somewhere I believe that Microsoft said to delete some files, Nvidia maybe? But I can not find that again, I forgot the exact error code I searched for before. I am currently running 13.10 and have never tried nor have any knowledge of IR in Ubuntu. I know of lirc, and I know a lot of it is now included in the kernel. My understanding is that lirc in basic terms maps pulses from an remote control to functions - like keyboard or mouse clicks. When I try to run it in the emulator, it crashes on boot. • HP Pavilion tx2000 - Wifi adapter no longer works after moving from 12.04 to a 12.10 clean install

  I have a HP Pavilion tx2000 that I have been running Ubuntu 12.04 on for a couple of months without any problems (wifi worked great) until yesterday when my hard drive failed. I replaced the hard drive and decided to install Ubuntu 12.10. Unlike 12.04, the wifi did not work after the installation finished and all the updates where installed (over Ethernet). The network drop down in the top right didn't even show a wireless option. I Googled about for a bit and found some solutions that seemed like they might work. Unfortunately they did not. Here is what I tried: sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-lpphy-installer Restart the computer. And the wifi still didn't work. At which point I panicked a bit and tried to undo the previous commands by running: sudo apt-get remove b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-lpphy-installer sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source Restart the computer. The wifi still doesn't work. This is where I stopped because I have no idea what I am doing and don't want to mess something up. The network drop down still doesn't show a wireless option and the hardware wifi switch on the laptop is amber (it turns blue when the wifi is on).   First I have to say that I tried everything written about this concept. The problem is that it stops working randomly in 3 main forms : 1 - sometimes it disconnect from wireless network and reconnect automatically 2 - sometimes it disconnect and wont connect no matter what (needs reboot) 3 - some times it's still connected but cannot ping or surf or whatever. I already tried disabling N mod using these commands : sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=1 (or 0, whatever) it didn't help . these are the results of lspci, sudo lshw -C network, • irritating TortoiseSVN error - file or directory is corrupted and chkdsk at boot

  Can't move 'D:\Documents\Websites\blah.svn\tmp\entries' to 'D:\ ... .svn\entries': The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. Any thoughts on what would cause this? This usually happens when trying to commit a large number of new files. Sometimes an update fixes it but most of the time I have to delete the offending directory, re-download it, and attempt to add or update it again. EDIT: it seems my pc always wanting to chkdsk as boot is related.
