  • Creating a webserver from scratch

    - by Val
I know this is going to sound a humongous task and many of you would think why in the world would you want to do so or why re-invent the wheel. However I just want a project I can work on the side see how it goes and experiment ( I got a thirst for learning something new and this is a great challenge). Question Where would I start creating a server-side scripting like php, asp and (now) node.js I would like to have a few examples, and most importantly a CODEX/documentation where I can learn and find out more how it works. I guess I am asking for directions where to go to read and find out more about this. Many thanks,

  • Munin help... configure graphs to show different time periods

    - by PiZzL3
I'm running a server with Munin installed through WHM cPanel. I've been googling around and I can't seem to find out how to do the following: A: Change a graph to show a different time period (currently I can only view, day, week, month, year). I would like to possibly view per minute, per hour... or specific intervals such as per 30 minutes, per 4 hours, etc... B(optional, but preferred): Add new graphs with the above criteria(A) above. I am a novice with all things that will possibly be required to do this (such as ssh). I wish I could just go edit a php file as I'm highly experienced in that subject. Thanks for any help!

  • reverse_proxy (mod_rewrite) and rails

    - by SooDesuNe
I have front end rails app, that reverse proxies to any of a number of backend rails apps depending on URL, for example http://www.my_host.com/app_one reverse proxies to http://www.remote_host_running_app_one.com such that a URL like http://www.my_host.com/app_one/users will display the contents of http://www.remote_host_running_app_one.com/users I have a large, and ever expanding number of backends, so they can not be explicitly listed anywhere other than a database. This is no problem for mod_rewrite using a prg:/ rewrite map reverse proxy. The question is, the urls returned by rails helpers have the form /controller/action making them absolute to the root. This is a problem for the page served by mod_rewrite because links on the proxied page appear as absolute to the domain. i.e.: http://www.my_host.com/app_one/controller/action has links that end up looking like /controller/action/ when they need to look like /app_one/controller/action Is there a way to fix this server-side, so that the links will be routed correctly?

  • mod_rewrite, 301 problem

    - by blid
Hi, Currently I can access specific site in two ways: 1. http://a.com/foo/bar 2. http://a.com/index.php?url=foo/bar What I'm trying to achive is to allow to do it only using first way, and make redirect 301 on the second to the first one. Here's the code which I made so far and put into .htaccess: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?url=$1 [QSA,L] #tricky part RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /index\.php\?url=?(.*)\ HTTP/ RewriteRule ^index\.php$ http://a.com/$1 [R=301,L] </IfModule> Currently it do almost all the job, it's redirecting index.php to /, but index.php?url=foo/bar to /?url=foo/bar and I can't manage to make it right. TIA.

  • Cookieless domain alternative

    - by user63220
I have only one folder that would benefit from a cookieless state, therefore setting up a whole subdomain for that seems a bit overkill for now, so I was wondering if deleting the cookie using mod_header in that specific folder would be enough or if it truly requires a different subdomain/domain ? For example, a .htaccess containing this in the /js subfolder of a webapp ? Header unset Set-Cookie

  • Git push on localhost with htaccess

    - by Rooneyl
I am looking into setting up a remote git repo. To start with I have created it on my Windows machine using xampp following this guide. All works fine except when I try to add some security, as per step 6 of the guide (for when I migrate it to my main web server). I have added passwords by using passwd and adding htaccess to the htdocs folder. This works fine (I have checked in my web browser), but when I try and push I get prompted for my password the it fails with a error (code 22). $ git push origin master Password for 'http://git@localhost': error: Cannot access URL http://git@localhost/s.git/, return code 22 fatal: git-http-push failed Any ideas?

  • How would I recognize the "spoon-feeding problem" on a dynamic webapp server?

    - by Don Spaulding
The "spoon-feeding problem", as it was recently explained to me, happens when connections to your application server are tied up feeding data across slow network connections to your clients. This makes sense to me and now I understand the importance of putting a highly-concurrent proxy in front of my app servers. My question is, how did the first person to recognize this problem figure it out? What *nix tools and troubleshooting techniques would help me to recognize this problem if I hadn't had it explained to me?

  • Jail user to home directory while still allowing permission to create and delete files/folders

    - by Sevenupcan
I'm trying to give a client SFTP access to the root directory of their site on my server (Ubuntu 10.10) so they can manager their website themselves. While I have been successful in jailing a user to a directory and giving them SFTP access; they are only allowed to create and delete new files in sub directories (the directories they own). This means that I must give them access to the parent directory to the root of their site. How can I limit them to the root of their site (for example public_html) while still allowing them the ability create and delete files. All the tutorials I have read suggest that the root must be the owner of the user's home directory, which prevents them from write access inside that directory. I'm relatively new to managing my own server so any advice would be very grateful. Many thanks.

  • How are suspected DoS attacks handled by webservers?

    - by Jan Kuboschek
I rent a server somewhere out in Canada or so that I'm using to host a website of mine. That website has close to 400,000 pages that I wanted to index today. For that, I wrote a crawler a while back (see JCrawler on Stackoverflow.com). Now, I'm greedy and didn't want it to take too long so I ran multiple threads resulting in some 60+ requests per second from my IP. A couple minutes later, my server locked me out. I can still FTP into it, but I can't HTTP it. As server administrator or user, do you have any idea how servers usually handle these situations? Is it common to place a permanent or temporary ban on the IP or what is typically done? Naturally, I'll re-run my software with fewer requests once I'm back on.

  • How to troubleshoot this memory usage?

    - by Camran
I have a classifieds website. I use PHP, MySql, and SOLR. Solr uses a Servlet Container, in my case JETTY, which is java application. I just noticed that something was terribly wrong on my website. I opened the terminal and entered the "top" command and noticed that JAVA was EATING all the cpu and mem. Now I thought "Ok, maybe I need more mem and cpu" So I increased it. But along with the increase the java app started eating more. This has never happened before, and it is either a bug, or a hack of some kind. Anyways, I need to troubleshoot this now, and so I wonder how do I do this? Can I somehow pinpoint exactly when the memory usage started to go up from some error log? How does one troubleshoot this? How do I prevent it? Is it possible to prevent too many requests somehow, if they are within a timeline? Thanks

  • Wildcard subdomain setup ... want to change host IP throws off client A records... what to do...

    - by Joe
Here is the current set up (in a nutshell). The site is set up with a wildcard subdomain, so *.website.com is accessible. Clients can then domain map their own domains with an A record to the server IP address and it will translate the to appropriate *.website.com with re directions and env variables in htaccess. Everything is working perfect... but now comes the problem. The site has grown larger than a single DQC Xeon server can handle at peak times. Looking at cloud options seems tempting, but clients are pointing their domains to a single IP address with the A record (our server). Now, this was probably bad planing from the start, but the question is, if this was to be done today, how would we set it up so that clients use a CNAME perhaps to point their domains to our server rather than an A record. And, if that is not possible for the root domain, how can we then use multiple IP addresses on our side to translate the incoming http request? Complex enough? Hope I've explained it well!

  • Apache2: How do I restrict access to a directory, but allow access to one file within it?

    - by Nick
I've inherited a poorly designed web app, which has a certain file that needs to be publicly accessible, but that file is inside a directory which should not. In other words, I need a way to block all files and sub-directories within a directory, but over-ride it for a single file. I'm trying this: # No one needs to access this directly <Directory /var/www/DangerousDirectory/> Order Deny, allow Deny from all # But this file is OK: <Files /var/www/DangerousDirectory/SafeFile.html> Allow from all </Files> </Directory> But it's not working- it just blocks everything including the file I want to allow. Any suggestions?

  • How do you redirect from one directory to another and maintain the proper basepath?

    - by codeninja
I need to redirect all /eula traffic to /tos RewriteRule ^/eula/$ /tos [R=301,NC] but this rule doesnt seem to work -- mostly because the basepath is being treated as the root when really theres another parent directory; what's happening with the above rule is /my/docs/eula -> /tos which is not right, it should be doing this /my/docs/eula -> /my/docs/tos How do I write the rule for this, without having to specify what the parent dir is?
