• Are first-class functions a substitute for the Strategy pattern?

  The Strategy design pattern is often regarded as a substitute for first-class functions in languages that lack them. So for example say you wanted to pass functionality into an object. In Java you'd have to pass in the object another object which encapsulates the desired behavior. In a language such as Ruby, you'd just pass the functionality itself in the form of an annonymous function. However I was thinking about it and decided that maybe Strategy offers more than a plain annonymous function does. This is because an object can hold state that exists independently of the period when it's method runs. However an annonymous function by itself can only hold state that ceases to exist the moment the function finishes execution. So my question is: when using a language that features first-class functions, would you ever use the Strategy pattern (i.e. encapsulate the functionality you want to pass around in an explicit object), or would you always use an annonymous function? When would you decide to use Strategy when you can use a first-class function?

• Is "If a method is re-used without changes, put the method in a base class, else create an interface" a good rule-of-thumb?

  A colleague of mine came up with a rule-of-thumb for choosing between creating a base class or an interface. He says: Imagine every new method that you are about to implement. For each of them, consider this: will this method be implemented by more than one class in exactly this form, without any change? If the answer is "yes", create a base class. In every other situation, create an interface. For example: Consider the classes cat and dog, which extend the class mammal and have a single method pet(). We then add the class alligator, which doesn't extend anything and has a single method slither(). Now, we want to add an eat() method to all of them. If the implementation of eat() method will be exactly the same for cat, dog and alligator, we should create a base class (let's say, animal), which implements this method. However, if it's implementation in alligator differs in the slightest way, we should create an IEat interface and make mammal and alligator implement it. He insists that this method covers all cases, but it seems like over-simplification to me. Is it worth following this rule-of-thumb?

The XPath expression //span[@class="boris"] selects all spans of class boris. How do I select the last one of these? I've tried //span[@class="boris" and last()] which doesn't work because last() here refers to the last span in the WHOLE DOCUMENT. How do I select all the spans of class boris... and then the last one of these? I've read 5 or 6 XPath tutorials and done a lot of Googling and I can't find a way to do this in XPath alone :( Thanks in advance for help :)

• Why my inner class DO see a NON static variable?

  Earlier I had a problem when an inner anonymous class did not see a field of the "outer" class. I needed to make a final variable to make it visible to the inner class. Now I have an opposite situation. In the "outer" class "ClientListener" I use an inner class "Thread" and the "Thread" class I have the "run" method and does see the "earPort" from the "outer" class! • C# Hiding, overriding and calling function from base class.

  I'm learning C# and I encountered the following problem. I have two classes: base and derived: class MyBase { public void MyMethod() { Console.WriteLine("MyBase::MyMethod()"); } } class MyDerived: MyBase { public void MyMethod() { Console.WriteLine("MyDerived::MyMethod()"); } } For now, without virtual and override key words. When I compile this I get the warning (which is of course expected) that I try to hide MyMethod from MyBase class. What I want to do is to call the method from the base class having an instance of derived class. I do this like this: MyDerived myDerived = new MyDerived(); ((MyBase)myDerived).MyMethod(); It works fine when I do not specify any virtual, etc. keywords in the methods. I tried to put combination of the keywords and I got the following results: | MyBase::MyMethod | MyDerived::MyMethod | Result printed on the console | | -----------------|---------------------|-------------------------------| | - | - | MyBase::MyMethod() | | - | new | MyBase::MyMethod() | | virtual | new | MyBase::MyMethod() | | virtual | override | MyDerived::MyMethod() | I hope the table is clear to you. I have two questions: Is it the correct way to call the function from the base class (((MyBase)myDerived).MyMethod();)? I know about base keyword, but it can be called only from the inside of the derived class. Is it right? • C# - Is it possible to start my project with a class instead of a form?

  I want my project to be started through an class instead of a form, is there any way to do this? Or to be more precise is there any good way to make sure that the first class, except Program, that is started isn't a form-class. I tried to change to my class in Program.main() but it looks like Application.run() needs a ApplicationContext. I guess that I could change the Program-class to start another class and let that class start the form with Application.run() but I think that it will cause a lot of problem since I don't want the same form to be started first each time and Application.run() have to be used at least once and at most once. So I think it will be hard to keep track of if Application.run() has been used or not. Another question that might be even more important; Is this a good way to do things in .net? The reason I want to do so is because I want to create some sort of MVC project where the class I want to start with is the controller and all forms I'll use will be views.

• Force calling the derived class implementation within a generic function in C#?

  Ok so I'm currently working with a set of classes that I don't have control over in some pretty generic functions using these objects. Instead of writing literally tens of functions that essentially do the same thing for each class I decided to use a generic function instead. Now the classes I'm dealing with are a little weird in that the derived classes share many of the same properties but the base class that they are derived from doesn't. One such property example is .Parent which exists on a huge number of derived classes but not on the base class and it is this property that I need to use. For ease of understanding I've created a small example as follows: class StandardBaseClass {} // These are simulating the SMO objects class StandardDerivedClass : StandardBaseClass { public object Parent { get; set; } } static class Extensions { public static object GetParent(this StandardDerivedClass sdc) { return sdc.Parent; } public static object GetParent(this StandardBaseClass sbc) { throw new NotImplementedException("StandardBaseClass does not contain a property Parent"); } // This is the Generic function I'm trying to write and need the Parent property. public static void DoSomething<T>(T foo) where T : StandardBaseClass { object Parent = ((T)foo).GetParent(); } } In the above example calling DoSomething() will throw the NotImplemented Exception in the base class's implementation of GetParent(), even though I'm forcing the cast to T which is a StandardDerivedClass. This is contrary to other casting behaviour where by downcasting will force the use of the base class's implementation. I see this behaviour as a bug. Has anyone else out there encountered this?

• Integrating PayMill: The token filled input field is not created, error "field_invalid_amount"

  I'm implementing the Credit Card Payment form of PayMill according to the Payment Form docu. So I copied the JS from the Bridge docu page and the form from the Payment Form docu page. But no token is created. When I try to debug the JS and add console.info(error.apierror); into the paymillResponseHandler(...) function, I get the error code: field_invalid_amount. According to the support page There are three possible reasons for this error message: no amount value was provided numbers were rounded wrong delimiter symbol But the amuont is provided and I've already tried different delimiter symbols. What "numbers were rounded" means, is not clear. What can be the problem and how to fix this issue? If you allow the player to class what class they want to play, say a mage class, a archer class, and a warrior class, which all have their own spec_abil function. How do you write it so that the program knows which one to use depending on the chosen class.

So would it better to place div's depending on their importance and then markup them on the page using css methods (like negative margins and absolute positioning)? I have another web server with the identical set-up and everything works fine there. I triple checked all the keystores and it looks like all the CA certificates are loaded correctly. I tried using another server with the identical setup, and was able to generate the client proxy code without any problems. Weird thing is that if I use the code generated from the other server against the weird server everything works fine. It is only Wsdl2Java that is giving me a problem.

  My program needs to read and write to folders on other machines that might be in another domain. So I used the System.Runtime.InteropServices to add shared folders. This worked fine when it was hard coded in the main menu of my windows service. But since then something went wrong and I don't know if it is a coding error or configuration error.   I am currently setting up a Linux server for a WIFI access-point. When ever someone who is connected to the hotspot/access-point? tries to reload a page they get forced onto the one page. Note: this wont have internet access! ie: user tries accessing www.google.com = it returns 192.168.1.200 or example.domain I've read that "dnsmasq" can be used to redirect any external addresses to an internal address. but haven't had any luck. Anyone have an example of a config for "dnsmasq"? I have also read that this can be done through a proxy?

  I am trying to set up a Mikrotik router as a transparent firewall on my network. I got the machine working on a hardware MT box, but my boss wants the MT virtualized. I have been trying the set up where my virtual windows box talks to the Mikrotik via private or internal network on the Hyper-V host. I can get the two machines to talk, but as soon as I set up a bridge on the MT, all traffic ceases between the two. Is it possible to create a bridge for this purpose (having the MT silently in front of my firewalled server)? I could really use some help.

  I am in an environment where all the machines are behind a switch that I don't have access to. Each ethernet wall port has limited bandwidth depending on how much has been paid for each port. The problem is that some people have 10Mbps connections and some have 100Mbps connections and this causes problems with local intranet file transfers and operating system/software deployments. Operating systems can take hours to be deployed if the machine is on 10mbps. Do you know if it is possible with most switches to set a rule that would limit bandwidth coming in/going out to an extranet, but keep full bandwidth if the packets are destined to go to a local machine? For example, the internet might be limited to 10Mbps, but internal servers would get gigabit speeds? Thanks

  OK, so I just got done tweaking my brand new PC and explorer.exe still manages to be sluggish not as snappy as I'd like or expected at all. Specs are i7 4th gen processor, 16GB RAM, windows 7 64 home premium on 256GB SSD, secondary internal 2TB drive. I assumed system would be lightning fast, been doing a bunch of researching and switched out a lot of different settings including enabling/disabling indexing, turning pagefile on/off or placing it on separate drive, turning folder optimization options on/off.. changes have been minimal or none at all. Any further advice or anything I might be missing, besides a new/repair install? PC is literally 3 days old I don't feel like I need a new install at all

Could you give me some sort of insight on this topic? For example, I can write some sort of csv export application, then enable remote MySQL for over the internet connection and then import csv to mysql directly from PC. Or upload csv and run cron on server. But this way of import-export causing delays; so I would like to link databased (or some msort). I have never done it before and would like to hear some opinions about this. Another way "just a thought" might to implement triggers that would initiate the update process via csv; but again, I would like to avoid csv. Do you have any good advise? Maybe some specific examples?
