  • NSNotifications vs delegate for multiple instances of same protocol

    I could use some architectural advice. I've run into the following problem a few times now and I've never found a truly elegant way to solve it. The issue, described at the highest level possible:I have a parent class that would like to act as the delegate for multiple children (all using the same protocol), but when the children call methods on the parent, the parent no longer knows which child is making the call. I would like to use loose coupling (delegates/protocols or notifications) rather than direct calls. I don't need multiple handlers, so notifications seem like they might be overkill. To illustrate the problem, let me try a super-simplified example: I start with a parent view controller (and corresponding view). I create three child views and insert each of them into the parent view. I would like the parent view controller to be notified whenever the user touches one of the children. There are a few options to notify the parent: Define a protocol. The parent implements the protocol and sets itself as the delegate to each of the children. When the user touches a child view, its view controller calls its delegate (the parent). In this case, the parent is notified that a view is touched, but it doesn't know which one. Not good enough. Same as #1, but define the methods in the protocol to also pass some sort of identifier. When the child tells its delegate that it was touched, it also passes a pointer to itself. This way, the parent know exactly which view was touched. It just seems really strange for an object to pass a reference to itself. Use NSNotifications. The parent defines a separate method for each of the three children and then subscribes to the "viewWasTouched" notification for each of the three children as the notification sender. The children don't need to attach themselves to the user dictionary, but they do need to send the notification with a pointer to themselves as the scope. Same as #4, but rather than using separate methods, the parent could just use one with a switch case or other branching along with the notification's sender to determine which path to take. Create multiple man-in-the-middle classes that act as the delegates to the child views and then call methods on the parent either with a pointer to the child or with some other differentiating factor. This approach doesn't seem scalable. Are any of these approaches considered best practice? I can't say for sure, but it feels like I'm missing something more obvious/elegant.

    Hi I'm working on a project where I have code like the following: #define NAME() Array inline NAME()* NAME()_init (void* arg0){return (NAME()*)Object_init(arg0);} But I get the following result: inline Array* Array _init (void* arg0){return (Array*)Object_init(arg0);} With a space between the "Array" and the "_init" Because this is a function name, I obviously do not want the space. Does anyone know how to get the space out? Thanks.

    Hi, I am attempting to reference a sub-object in a field expression in a studio 2010 report. This used to work in prior versions. When account references another object with properties the following used to work. =Fields!Account.Value.Name (Name is a property of the child object, Account is the parent object) The same expression syntax no longer works. How do I reference the properties of a sub-object in reporting services in an rdlc in studio 2010. Thanks

  • What programming languages are good for statistics?

    I'm doing a bit more statistical analysis on some things lately, and I'm curious if there are any programming languages that are particularly good for this purpose. I know about R, but I'd kind of prefer something a bit more general-purpose (or is R pretty general-purpose?). What suggestions do you guys have? Are there any languages out there whose syntax/semantics are particularly oriented towards this? Or are there any languages that have exceptionally good libraries?

    I'm making a very simple content-management system in Javascript. It uses plugins which are individual .js files which live in a "modules" folder. Currently I'm loading them with JQuery's getScript() function, but I have to manually define the list of available modules. Is there any way to dynamically load the list of Javascript files so that the user can install additional modules by simply dropping them into the "modules" folder?

  • Eclipse autocomplete not working in some Java files

    Hi, I have noticed that autocomplete is not working in some of java files in Eclipse. Also, the files where autocomplete is not working, display a hollow "J" as the icon for the Java file. The files where autocomplete is working, icon for java file is a filled "J" I am wondering if someone can point out what went wrong all of suddent, why the change in icons and why autocomplete and syntax highlighting is turned-off in the files with a hollow "J" icon?   • Storing a NTFS Security Descriptor in C

    My goal is to store a NTFS Security Descriptor in its identical native state. The purpose is to restore it on-demand. I managed to write the code for that purpose, I was wondering if anybody mind to validate a sample of it?     I'm totally at wit's end: I can't figure out how my dependency issues. I've read countless posts and blogs and reworked my code so many times that I can't even remember what almost worked and what didnt. I continually get not only redefinition errors, but class not defined errors. I rework the header guards and remove some errors simply to find others.     Here is a scenario in my mind and I have googled, Binged it a lot but got the answer like "Abstract class has not implemented method so, we cant create the object" "The word 'Abstract' instruct the clr that not to create object of the class" But in a simple class where we have all virtual method, able to create an object??? Also, we can define different access modified to Abstract class constructor like private, protected or public. My search terminated to this question ; Why we can't create object of an Abstract class?

    I would like to define a type implementing a certain interface, however I would only implement it in a proxy at runtime. I can see two obstacles in this scenario : 1-Make the compiler ignore non implemented interfaces. 2-Make the CLR ignore(or at least delay) the TypeLoadException with the following description : "Method SOMEMETHOD in type SOMETYPE from assembly SOMEASSEMBLY does not have an implementation." Is something like this possible?

    Normally to pass parameters via in RSpec we do: params[:my_key] = my_value get :my_method Where my_method deals with what it received from params. But in my controller I have a method, which takes args directly i.e.: def my_method(*args) ... end How do I call the method with those args from within the test? I've tried get :my_method(args) but Ruby interpreter complains about syntax error.
