  • How do I find Microsoft APIs?

    - by Stephen
I'm a java programmer, and if I see something that: I don't know about or just want to find a method description without opening an ide or am on support I type java [classname] into google, and there it is. If I try this crazy stunt for C# I'll come up with a whole heap of tutorials (how do I use it etc). If I manage to get to MSDN, I have to wade through a page describing every .net technology to see how their syntax references the same object, and then I have to find the appropriate page from there ([class name] Constructor) for example. This is even more pronounced, because I don't have Visual Studio, so I've got nothing to make it easier. There must be something I'm missing or don't know... how does this situation work for Microsoft developers? how can I make my life easier/searches better? are there techniques that work no matter what computer I'm on (e.g. require no computer setup/downloads) Notes It could be thought that java is just "java", but it's just that the java apis are only referenced/defined in the core language. For all the other languages on the JVM, it's assumed that you will just learn the correct syntax to use the java apis. I presume that .Net only lists a whole heap of languages as the api classes are actually different and have different interfaces capabilities (or some approximation of this presumption). Edit While searching msdn works... in the java space I can type 'java [anyclass]' and it will generally be found... whether it's a java core api or a third party library

  • A rocket following the tracks height. Not Homing Missile.

    - by confusedEj
What I am trying to create is a rocket that will hug the track in a straight direction. ie) The rocket travels in a straight direction and can orientate based on its local x axis. This is so it can go up/down ramps and never hit the ground. Currently I am using PhysX opengl and C++. This is the method I'm trying right now: 1. Ray cast from ahead of the missile (ray casting downwards) 2. If the ray cast is less then the expected ray cast length, then I have to orientate up. 3. If the ray cast is more then the expected ray cast length, then I have to orientate down. Now the problem, I am having is that my missile is orientating at an arbitary angle (I'm giving it 1 degrees.) Though I think this is a bad approach because the amount of frames in the game is not as much as I would think there would be. So the rocket would run into a ramp. My main question is: is there a better way of approaching this and how? NxVec3 frontRayLoc = m_rocketConfig->getValueForKey<NxVec3>("r_frontRayCastLocation"); float threshhold = m_rocketConfig->getValueForKey<float>("r_angleThreshhold"); float predRayCastHeight = m_rocketConfig->getValueForKey<float>("r_predRayCastHeight"); NxVec3 rayGlobalPos_1 = m_actor->getGlobalPosition() + m_actor->getGlobalOrientation() * frontRayLoc; NxVec3 dir = m_actor->getGlobalOrientation() * NxVec3(0,-1.0,0); NxReal dist1 = castRay(rayGlobalPos_1, dir); // Get the percentage difference float actualFrontHeight = abs(1 - (dist1/predRayCastHeight)); // See if the percentage difference is greater then threshold // Also check if we are being shot off track if ((actualFrontHeight > threshhold) && (dist1 != m_rayMaxDist)){ // Dip Down if (dist1 > predRayCastHeight){ printf("DOWN - Distance 1: %f\n", dist1); // Get axis of rotation NxVec3 newAxis = m_actor->getGlobalOrientation() * NxVec3(1.0,0,0.0); // Rotate based on that axis m_orientateAngle = -1.0 * m_orientateAngle; // For rotating clockwise NxQuat newOrientation(m_orientateAngle, newAxis); NxMat33 orientation(newOrientation); m_orientation = m_orientation * orientation; // Orientate the linear velocity to keep speed of rocket and direct away from road NxVec3 linVel = m_actor->getLinearVelocity(); m_actor->setLinearVelocity(m_orientation * linVel); } // Go Up else if (dist1 < predRayCastHeight){ printf("UP - Distance 1: %f\n", dist1); // Get axis of rotation NxVec3 newAxis = m_actor->getGlobalOrientation() * NxVec3(1.0,0,0.0); // Rotate around axis NxQuat newOrientation(m_orientateAngle, newAxis); m_actor->setGlobalOrientationQuat(newOrientation); NxMat33 orientation(newOrientation); m_orientation = m_orientation * orientation; // Orientate the linear velocity to keep speed of rocket and direct away from road NxVec3 linVel = m_actor->getLinearVelocity(); m_actor->setLinearVelocity(m_orientation*linVel); } m_actor->setGlobalOrientation(m_orientation); } Thanks for the support :)

  • How does this Singleton-like web class persists session data, even though session is not updated in

    - by Micah Burnett
    Ok, I've got this singleton-like web class which uses session to maintain state. I initially thought I was going to have to manipulate the session variables on each "set" so that the new values were updated in the session. However I tried using it as-is, and somehow, it remembers state. For example, if run this code on one page: UserContext.Current.User.FirstName = "Micah"; And run this code in a different browser tab, FirstName is displayed correctly: Response.Write(UserContext.Current.User.FirstName); Can someone tell me (prove) how this data is getting persisted in the session? Here is the class: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; public class UserContext { private UserContext() { } public static UserContext Current { get { if (System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Session["UserContext"] == null) { UserContext uc = new UserContext(); uc.User = new User(); System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Session["UserContext"] = uc; } return (UserContext)System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Session["UserContext"]; } } private string HospitalField; public string Hospital { get { return HospitalField; } set { HospitalField = value; ContractField = null; ModelType = null; } } private string ContractField; public string Contract { get { return ContractField; } set { ContractField = value; ModelType = string.Empty; } } private string ModelTypeField; public string ModelType { get { return ModelTypeField; } set { ModelTypeField = value; } } private User UserField; public User User { get { return UserField; } set { UserField = value; } } public void DoSomething() { } } public class User { public int UserId { get; set; } public string FirstName { get; set; } } I added this to a watch, and can see that the session variable is definitely being set somewhere: (UserContext)System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Session["UserContext"]; As soon as a setter is called the Session var is immediately updated: set { HospitalField = value; //<--- here ContractField = null; ModelType = null; }

  • Ruby as a scripting language for web server

    - by Olivier Lalonde
Is it possible to use Ruby as a scripting language with a HTTP server ? I'd like to be able to simply put some Ruby files in a web directory and be able to execute them from my browser - just like I did with PHP. I have absolutely nothing against frameworks such as RoR, but I was told that I should first learn Ruby and only then move on with higher level frameworks. Of course, I could write some Ruby scripts and run them in the console, but I would prefer getting the input/output from my browser :) Is that possible at all ? Otherwise, how hard would it be for me to build a quick and simple web framework ?

  • How to choose the right web application framework?

    - by thenextwebguy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_web_application_frameworks Since we are ambitiously aiming to be big, scalability is important, and so are globalization features. Since we are starting out without funding, price/performance and cost of licences/hardware is important. We definitely want to bring AJAX well present in the web interface. But apart from these, there's no further criteria I can come up with. I'm most experienced with C#/ASP.net, PHP and Java, in that order, but don't turn down other languages (Ruby, Python, Scala, etc.). How can we determine from the jungle of frameworks the one that suits best our goal? What other questions should we be asking ourselves? Reference material: articles, book recommendations, websites, etc.?

  • Best way to set-up an iPhone project?

    - by wgpubs
Looking for the best way to set-up an iPhone project in XCode ... namely: What is the preferred project template to start with (e.g View-Based or Windows-Based application)? What folder structure should I create in XCode to manage the project? For example, under "Classes" is it a preferred practice to add Models, Views and Controllers sub-folders? Any other best practices, tips, etc... would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Programming image maps

    - by patrikas
Hello, I am looking for a javascript/jquery solution to build a map with selectable tracks. It will consist of area's map (image) with some river routes for boats that have to be selectable - route have to be made clearer on mouse hover and after user clicks on a route a popup window should emerge. Basically I am just looking for a solution for this type of 'map'. Maybe there are some jquery widgets/plugins that would ease the work ? I don't know where to start actually.. Can anybody give some pointers ? Thanks in advance, Patrick

  • How do you rotate a sprite around its center by caclulating a new x and y position?

    - by Sam152
I'm using Dark GDK and C++ to create a simple 2d game. I'm rotating an object but it rotates from the top left corner of the sprite. I have the following variables available: PlayerX PlayerY PlayerWidth PlayerHeight RotateAngle (360 x 0) Is there an algorithm that will modify the pivot point of the sprite, preferable to the center? Here is a small code sample: void Player::Move( void ) { if ( checkLeft() ) { PlayerX -= PlayerSpeed; if ( PlayerX < 0 ) PlayerX = 0; } if ( checkRight() ) { PlayerX += PlayerSpeed ; if ( PlayerX > 800 - PlayerWidth ) PlayerX = 800 - PlayerWidth; } if ( checkUp()) { PlayerY -= PlayerSpeed; if ( PlayerY < 0 ) PlayerY = 0; } if ( checkDown()) { PlayerY += PlayerSpeed; if ( PlayerY > 600 - PlayerHeight) PlayerY = 600 - PlayerHeight; } RotateAngle += 5; if(RotateAngle > 360) RotateAngle -=360; dbRotateSprite(Handle,RotateAngle); dbSprite ( 1 , PlayerX , PlayerY , Handle ); } Edit I'm considering opening up some reputation for this question, I have yet to be provided with an answer that works for me. If someone can provide an actual code sample that does the job, I'd be very happy. The problem with Blindy's answer is that no matter how much I simply translate it back or forth, the spirte still rotates around the top left hand corner and moving it somewhere rotating around the top left corner, then moving it back to the same position accomplishes nothing. Here is what I believe to be going on: Just so there is no confusion I have created a an image of what is going on. The left shows what is actually happening and the right shows what I need to happen.

  • What kind of security issues will I have if I provide my web app write access?

    - by iama
I would like to give my web application write access to a particular folder on my web server. My web app can create files on this folder and can write data to those files. However, the web app does not provide any interface to the users nor does it publicize the fact that it can create files or write to files. Am I susceptible to any security vulnerabilities? If so, what are they?

  • How to think in data stores instead of databases?

    - by Jim
As an example, Google App Engine uses data stores, not a database, to store data. Does anybody have any tips for using data stores instead of databases? It seems I've trained my mind to think 100% in object relationships that map directly to table structures, and now it's hard to see anything differently. I can understand some of the benefits of data stores (e.g. performance and the ability to distribute data), but some good database functionality is sacrificed (e.g. joins). Does anybody who has worked with data stores like BigTable have any good advice to working with them?

  • Conceptual website designer ideas?

    - by Alex Tang
Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any tool (apart from Visio) to generate visually nice looking website site maps or diagrams of a conceptual website. We're wanting to present some nice diagrams to our client but we're unsure about where to get started - we're all coders, not designers. Visio shapes or stencils are quite old. Just wondered what others in the industry are using!

  • New to asp.net. Need help debugging this email form.

    - by Roeland
Hey guys, First of all, I am a php developer and most of .net is alien to me which is why I am posting here! I just migrated over a site from one set of webhosting to another. The whole site is written in .net. None of the site is database driven so most of it works, except for the contact form. The output on the site simple states there was an error with "There has been an error - please try to submit the contact form again, if you continue to experience problems, please notify our webmaster." This is just a simple message it pops out of it gets to the "catch" part of the email function. I went into web.config and changed the parameters: <emailaddresses> <add name="System" value="[email protected]"/> <add name="Contact" value="[email protected]"/> <add name="Info" value="[email protected]"/> </emailaddresses> <general> <add name="WebSiteDomain" value="hoyespharmacy.com"/> </general> Then the .cs file for contact contains the mail function EmailFormData(): private void EmailFormData() { try { StringBuilder body = new StringBuilder(); body.Append("Name" + ": " + txtName.Text + "\n\r"); body.Append("Phone" + ": " + txtPhone.Text + "\n\r"); body.Append("Email" + ": " + txtEmail.Text + "\n\r"); body.Append("Fax" + ": " + txtEmail.Text + "\n\r"); body.Append("Subject" + ": " + ddlSubject.SelectedValue + "\n\r"); body.Append("Message" + ": " + txtMessage.Text); MailMessage mail = new MailMessage(); mail.IsBodyHtml = false; mail.To.Add(new MailAddress(Settings.GetEmailAddress("System"))); mail.Subject = "Contact Us Form Submission"; mail. From = new MailAddress(Settings.GetEmailAddress("System"), Settings.WebSiteDomain); mail.Body = body.ToString(); SmtpClient smtpcl = new SmtpClient(); smtpcl.Send(mail); } catch { Utilities.RedirectPermanently(Request.Url.AbsolutePath + "?messageSent=false"); } } How do I see what the actual error is. I figure I can do something with the "catch" part of the function.. Any pointers? Thanks!

Any suggestions for other developers?

I have researched on JasperServer Pro, BIRT & Pentaho. Even though these are open source & free, the end user/adhoc reporting components needs to be paid annual license fees which is not quite affordable for us. So please tell you suggestions Thanks In Advance.

  • What web server should I use if I want to run Java code behind it?

    - by Boaz
At the moment, I have lot's of Java which does all kind of nifty stuff and I'm happy with it. The code is command line driven which have been great so far, but I recently decided I want to make the functionality available through web-services. Since my is complex and I'm happy with the way it's written , I don't want go through the pain of porting it to other languages. So I set out on a google journey to find out what web servers exist (on a Linux machine, though it's interesting to hear the answer without that limitation). From what I could find, it seems that there are two viable options: Apache Tomcat and Sun Java Server. What are the reason to choose one on top of the other? what are the strength of each and what are the weaknesses? Or, perhaps, there is a third one which is much easier, flexible and less cumbersome. Anyone?
