  • Alternative to Windows Azure tables out of the cloud

    Hi :) I'm developing a .NET app, which needs to run both on Azure and on regular Windows Servers(2003). It needs to store a few GB of data and SQL Azure is too expensive for me, so I'll use Azure tables in the cloud version. Can you recommend a storage solution, which will run on standalone servers and have an API and behavior similar to Azure tables? From what I've seen Server AppFabric does not include Tables. TIA

  • List<> of objects, different types, sort and pull out types individually?

    I've got a handful of products, any, all, or none of which may be associated with a specific submission. All 7 products are subclasses of the class Product. I need to store all the products associated with a submission, and then retrieve them and their field data on my presentation layer. I've been using a List, and List, but when I use the OfType, I throw an error saying that I can't implicitly convert systems.generic.IEnumerable to type 'Product'. I've tried to cast, but to no avail. When I use prodlist.OfType<EPL>(); there are no errors, but when I try and store that in an instance of EPL "tempEpl", I get the aforementioned cast-related error. What gives? Code below.   • cleaning up expired sessions with a custom SessionStateStoreProvider

    I'm implementing my own SessionStateStoreProvider with a schemaless database. It's a little hard to tell from the documentation but it seems as though I will have to have a separate process for cleaning up expired sessions since the database will not have a way to notify the session state store that a session has expired. Am I wrong about this? I haven't seen an alternative example for overriding the SetItemExpireCallback method.

    Hi, I'm trying to add a "remember me" feature to my web app to let a user stay logged in between browser restarts. I think I got the bulk of it. I'm using google app engine for the backend which lets me use java servlets. The only frightening thing is what happens if someone finds out the value of the cookie? A malicious individual could set that cookie in their browser and access my site, and essentially be logged in as the user associated with it! On the same note, I guess this is why the cookie ids must be difficult to randomly generate, because a malicious user doesn't have to steal someone's cookie - they could just randomly assign cookie values and start logging in as whichever user happens to be associated with that cookie, if any, right? Scary stuff, I feel like I should at least include the username in the client cookie such that when it presents itself to the server, I won't auto-login unless the username+cookieid match in the DataStore. Any comments would be great, I'm new to this and trying to figure out a best practice. I'm not writing a site which contains any sensitive personal information, but I'd like to minimize any potential for abuse all the same, Thanks

I'm trying to store the content_type of a GenericForeignKey in another model (the definition model) like so: class IndicatorFieldInstance(models.Model): definition = models.ForeignKey(IndicatorField) object_id = models.PositiveIntegerField() content_object = generic.GenericForeignKey(definition.content_type, 'object_id') indicator_instance = models.ForeignKey(IndicatorInstance) I've also tried it like this: content_object = generic.GenericForeignKey('definition__content_type', 'object_id') Neither of these methods seem to work. Is it possible to achieve this? The reason why I store it within this folder is since these images need to be cleared once in a while and it's so much easier just to clear the tmp directory using tmpwatch.   • Letting users trial your web app before sign-up: sessions or temp db?

    I've seen a few instances now where web applications are letting try them out without you having to sign-up (though to save you need to of course). example: trial at http://minutedock.com/ I'm wondering about doing this for my own web app and the fundamental question is whether to store their info into sessions or into a temp user table? The temp user table would allow logging and potentially be less of a hit on the server correct? Is there a best practice here?

Currently i am using a integer field to store the priority, but i would like to display high/medium/low instead of letting user type in a priority. A way to approximate this is to use a Priority database which stores 3 elements, 1:high, 2:medium, 3:low, but it seems like an overkill. Any easier way would be much appreciated! Jason

  • Need to have testing server work with https: but don't have an SSL

    I'm working on an online store. I have it setup on my testing server. I'm having a problem where when it goes to the checkout functions it wants to start calling https pages. I don't have an SSL certificate for this server. Is there something I can do with Apache to get this to work? Mod_Rewrite perhaps? I've played a little with rewrites but haven't had any success.

    I've searched around for the answer to this and found lots of much more complicated questions, but none that gave me insight enough to figure this one out. What I'm doing: 1- open a page with a number that will probably be large 2- get the X Path to where that number is and store it to a variable 3- do a javascript to compare the above stored variable to see if it is bigger than 10, if so, set a new varaible to true; else false (because that is the default value) 4- verify the variable in #3 is true Sounds simple enough, no? Where it goes wrong: At step 3, comparing the variable from step #2 to 10 isn't allowed, at least not the way I'm writing it. Why? I must be able to assign a value to a variable in Selenium, then in the next line use that variable in a javascript, right?

    What is a good way to represent a collection of bits? I have a set of various on/off toggles (thousands of them) and need to store and retrieve their state. The naïve implementation would be an array of booleans, but I'm wondering if there's a better way (better in terms of access speed and/or memory requirements). I've found this BitArray implementation, but it's limited to 32 bits, which is not enough for this case.
