  We are putting out a call for abstracts to present at the Fall 2010 Silverlight Connections conference in Las Vegas, Nov 1-4, 2010. The due date for submissions is April 26, 2010. For submitting sessions, please use this URL: http://www.deeptraining.com/devconnections/abstracts Please keep the abstracts under 200 words each and in one paragraph. No bulleted items and line breaks, and please use a spell-checker. Do not email abstracts, you need to use the web-based tool to submit them. Please submit at least 3 abstracts. It will help your chances of being selected if you submitted 5 or more abstracts. Also, you are encouraged to suggest all-day pre or post conference workshops as well. • May I know what python is great at [on hold]

  I am amazed by python on how tidy the code is, so i decided to learn it, and 2 days pass and I am completely in love with python, but I just code it for hobby thing like chatting robot, uploading to file hosting scripts, etc that small tools for my own daily internet life, and not much for work. I can't find a real life usage of python here. I live in Singapore, when I see in the job skill needed, from those companies hiring, only one asking for python. so I begin to be doubtful whether this skill of mine really worth my time investing it? I also heard about django, and don't know how much popular it is comparing to asp.net. So i ask your help to tell me your country and how popular python there and whether you like python or not? I really like python because of the easy scripting language (not complicated like C++) but the usefulness is almost near C++ where many open source library out there that can run both in windows and linux, so the portability is great! i just want to justify my time for learning python, as because my job does not require python, and I don't have much time at home to learn something new.

• Can I migrate from GNU Mailman to MailChimp?

  I have ~20 lists, all of which are mostly announce-only (newsletters--recipients do not reply back to the list) running in GNU Mailman. It's alright. Mailman has certainly prooven itself but we want some progressive features and a better peice of mind (delivery success, hosting, etc... we'd be happy paying a 3rd party to handle these things). can MailChimp give us what we need? I see tons of fun copy and graphics, showing off neat features but what I really want to do is; if MailChimp is doing the mailings, what does the address look like? is MailChimp good for sending out simple newsletters? What about automatic bounce processing / unsubscribing of users? I setup a free account but I don't see how any of it integrates into my own domain... no DNS overrides or cname suggestions. Also, I see MailChimp has a clean and nifty API client in Python that I want to integrate into our sites (Django powered) so that really really makes the service attractive to me--I just hope I understand it correctly.

• Should MVVM ViewModel inject an HTML template for default view?

  I'm working on web application design that includes Knockout.js and have an overall MVVM question: Does it make sense for the ViewModel to automatically inject a default HTML template (pulled from separate file)? More detail: suppose I have a site like this... header... widget 1 widget 2 widget 3 footer ...and widgets 1/2/3 are going to be Knockout.js ViewModels determined at runtime from an overall list of available widgets, each with associated HTML template file. I understand that in MVVM you want the view (HTML template in this case) to be separate from the ViewModel (Javascript file in this case) so that people can edit it separately and possibly provide multiple templates for different "skins". However, it seems like it would also make sense for the ViewModel to point to a default html template that gets automatically used unless the controlling code provides a different one. Am I looking at this correctly? As an example, see this answer on StackOverflow where he recommends injecting the HTML and then the ViewModel. Seems like a one-liner would make more sense in that case, with the possibility of overriding a default template value.

• Script Task/Component and Template Information

  The Script Task and Script component are often used by people developing SSIS packages because they are easy to use and now because SSIS could be perceived to be more developer friendly they are very powerful. That being said we should no be using them everywhere.  There are generally Tasks/Components already provided that will do the job it may be that we have to rethink the way we want to draw our package. I had cause last week to break out the script component in SQL Server 2008 SP1 and found that it was broken.  I don’t know when it broke as I do not use them all that often.  My error was as below.     Something must have overwritten this template information.  I looked in Event Viewer and tried the things it suggested but the templates still did not work.  Here is how I got them eventually to work for me (Your Mileage may vary) Open up a Command Prompt window using an administrator level account and “as an administrator” vsta.exe /hostid SSIS_ScriptTask /setup vsta.exe /hostid SSIS_ScriptComponent /setup   This worked for me.  Hope it helps.

In this entry, I describe how to customize this task flow.Default members portlet:Prototype Members Portlet:First thing to do, I downloaded SpacesTaskflowCustomizationApplication with its guide.This application allows developers to modify task flows in Spaces, such as Announcements, Discussions, Events, Members, etc. Before starting, some configuration is needed in jDeveloper, like changing role to 'Customization Developer' mode, although it is explained in the application guide. It is important to know that the way task flows are modified is through libraries, and they cannot be updated directly in the source code like templates, you must use the Structure panel for this. Steps to customize Members portlet:1. There are two members views: showIconicView and showListView. By default it is set to Iconic view, but in my case I preferred the View list, so I updated in table-of-members-taskflow.xml this default value.2. Change the TableOfMembers-ListView.jspx file. By editing this file, you can control the way this task flow is displayed. So I customized this list view using the structure panel to get the desired look&feel.3. After changes are made, click save all, because every time a library changes an xml file is generated with all modifications listed, and they must be saved.4. Rebuild project and deploy application.5. • Explain Model View Controller

  My experience with developing dynamic websites is limited mostly to Java servlets. I've used Tomcat to develop various Java servlets, and I wouldn't hesitate to say that I'm reasonably proficient with this technology, as well as with client-side HTML/CSS/Javascript for the front-end. When I think "dynamic website", I think: user requests a URL with a query string, server receives the query, and then proceeds to output HTML dynamically in order to respond to the query. This often involves communication with a database in order to fetch requested data for display. This is basically the idea behind the doGet method of a Java HttpServlet. But these days, I'm hearing more and more about newer frameworks such as Django and Ruby on Rails, all of which take advantage of the "Model View Controller" architecture. I've read various articles which explain MVC, but I'm having trouble really understanding the benefits. I understand that the general idea is to separate business logic from UI logic, but I fail to see how this is anything really different from normal web programming. Web programming, by it's very nature, forces you to separate business logic (back-end server-side programming) from UI programming (client-side HTML or Javascript), because the two exist in entirely different spheres of programming. Question: What does MVC offer over something like a Java servlet, and more importantly, what exactly is MVC and how is it different from what you would normally do to develop a dynamic website using a more traditional approach such as a Java servlet (or even something older like CGI). If possible, when explaining MVC, please provide an example which illustrates how MVC is applied to the web development process, and how it is beneficial.

• Caveats with the runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests in IIS 7/8

  One of the nice enhancements in IIS 7 (and now 8) is the ability to be able to intercept non-managed - ie. non ASP.NET served - requests from within ASP.NET managed modules. This opened up a ton of new functionality that could be applied across non-managed content using .NET code. I thought I had a pretty good handle on how IIS 7's Integrated mode pipeline works, but when I put together some samples last tonight I realized that the way that managed and unmanaged requests fire into the pipeline is downright confusing especially when it comes to the runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests attribute. There are a number of settings that can affect whether a managed module receives non-ASP.NET content requests such as static files or requests from other frameworks like PHP or ASP classic, and this is topic of this blog post. Native and Managed Modules The integrated mode IIS pipeline for IIS 7 and later - as the name suggests - allows for integration of ASP.NET pipeline events in the IIS request pipeline. Natively IIS runs unmanaged code and there are a host of native mode modules that handle the core behavior of IIS. If you set up a new IIS site or application without managed code support only the native modules are supported and fired without any interaction between native and managed code. If you use the Integrated pipeline with managed code enabled however things get a little more confusing as there both native modules and .NET managed modules can fire against the same IIS request. If you open up the IIS Modules dialog you see both managed and unmanaged modules. Unmanaged modules point at physical files on disk, while unmanaged modules point at .NET types and files referenced from the GAC or the current project's BIN folder. Both native and managed modules can co-exist and execute side by side and on the same request. When running in IIS 7 the IIS pipeline actually instantiates a the ASP.NET  runtime (via the System.Web.PipelineRuntime class) which unlike the core HttpRuntime classes in ASP.NET receives notification callbacks when IIS integrated mode events fire. The IIS pipeline is smart enough to detect whether managed handlers are attached and if they're none these notifications don't fire, improving performance. The good news about all of this for .NET devs is that ASP.NET style modules can be used for just about every kind of IIS request. All you need to do is create a new Web Application and enable ASP.NET on it, and then attach managed handlers. Handlers can look at ASP.NET content (ie. ASPX pages, MVC, WebAPI etc. requests) as well as non-ASP.NET content including static content like HTML files, images, javascript and css resources etc. It's very cool that this capability has been surfaced. However, with that functionality comes a lot of responsibility. Because every request passes through the ASP.NET pipeline if managed modules (or handlers) are attached there are possible performance implications that come with it. Running through the ASP.NET pipeline does add some overhead. ASP.NET and Your Own Modules When you create a new ASP.NET project typically the Visual Studio templates create the modules section like this: <system.webServer> <validation validateIntegratedModeConfiguration="false" /> <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true" > </modules> </system.webServer> Specifically the interesting thing about this is the runAllManagedModulesForAllRequest="true" flag, which seems to indicate that it controls whether any registered modules always run, even when the value is set to false. Realistically though this flag does not control whether managed code is fired for all requests or not. Rather it is an override for the preCondition flag on a particular handler. With the flag set to the default true setting, you can assume that pretty much every IIS request you receive ends up firing through your ASP.NET module pipeline and every module you have configured is accessed even by non-managed requests like static files. In other words, your module will have to handle all requests. Now so far so obvious. What's not quite so obvious is what happens when you set the runAllManagedModulesForAllRequest="false". You probably would expect that immediately the non-ASP.NET requests no longer get funnelled through the ASP.NET Module pipeline. But that's not what actually happens. For example, if I create a module like this:<add name="SharewareModule" type="HowAspNetWorks.SharewareMessageModule" /> by default it will fire against ALL requests regardless of the runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests flag. Even if the value runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="false", the module is fired. Not quite expected. So what is the runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests really good for? It's essentially an override for managedHandler preCondition. If I declare my handler in web.config like this:<add name="SharewareModule" type="HowAspNetWorks.SharewareMessageModule" preCondition="managedHandler" /> and the runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="false" my module only fires against managed requests. If I switch the flag to true, now my module ends up handling all IIS requests that are passed through from IIS. The moral of the story here is that if you intend to only look at ASP.NET content, you should always set the preCondition="managedHandler" attribute to ensure that only managed requests are fired on this module. But even if you do this, realize that runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true" can override this setting. runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests and Http Application Events Another place the runAllManagedModulesForAllRequest attribute affects is the Global Http Application object (typically in global.asax) and the Application_XXXX events that you can hook up there. So while the events there are dynamically hooked up to the application class, they basically behave as if they were set with the preCodition="managedHandler" configuration switch. The end result is that if you have runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true" you'll see every Http request passed through the Application_XXXX events, and you only see ASP.NET requests with the flag set to "false". What's all that mean? Configuring an application to handle requests for both ASP.NET and other content requests can be tricky especially if you need to mix modules that might require both. Couple of things are important to remember. If your module doesn't need to look at every request, by all means set a preCondition="managedHandler" on it. This will at least allow it to respond to the runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="false" flag and then only process ASP.NET requests. Look really carefully to see whether you actually need runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true" in your applications as set by the default new project templates in Visual Studio. Part of the reason, this is the default because it was required for the initial versions of IIS 7 and ASP.NET 2 in order to handle MVC extensionless URLs. However, if you are running IIS 7 or later and .NET 4.0 you can use the ExtensionlessUrlHandler instead to allow you MVC functionality without requiring runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true": <handlers> <remove name="ExtensionlessUrlHandler-Integrated-4.0" /> <add name="ExtensionlessUrlHandler-Integrated-4.0" path="*." verb="GET,HEAD,POST,DEBUG,PUT,DELETE,PATCH,OPTIONS" type="System.Web.Handlers.TransferRequestHandler" preCondition="integratedMode,runtimeVersionv4.0" /> </handlers> Oddly this is the default for Visual Studio 2012 MVC template apps, so I'm not sure why the default template still adds runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true" is - it should be enabled only if there's a specific need to access non ASP.NET requests. As a side note, it's interesting that when you access a static HTML resource, you can actually write into the Response object and get the output to show, which is trippy. I haven't looked closely to see how this works - whether ASP.NET just fires directly into the native output stream or whether the static requests are re-routed directly through the ASP.NET pipeline once a managed code module is detected. This doesn't work for all non ASP.NET resources - for example, I can't do the same with ASP classic requests, but it makes for an interesting demo when injecting HTML content into a static HTML page :-) Note that on the original Windows Server 2008 and Vista (IIS 7.0) you might need a HotFix in order for ExtensionLessUrlHandler to work properly for MVC projects. On my live server I needed it (about 6 months ago), but others have observed that the latest service updates have integrated this functionality and the hotfix is not required. On IIS 7.5 and later I've not needed any patches for things to just work. Plan for non-ASP.NET Requests It's important to remember that if you write a .NET Module to run on IIS 7, there's no way for you to prevent non-ASP.NET requests from hitting your module. So make sure you plan to support requests to extensionless URLs, to static resources like files. Luckily ASP.NET creates a full Request and full Response object for you for non ASP.NET content. So even for static files and even for ASP classic for example, you can look at Request.FilePath or Request.ContentType (in post handler pipeline events) to determine what content you are dealing with. • Adding dynamic business logic/business process checks to a system

  I'm wondering if there is a good extant pattern (language here is Python/Django but also interested on the more abstract level) for creating a business logic layer that can be created without coding. For example, suppose that a house rental should only be available during a specific time. The thing is, it would have to be flexible enough to encompass a wide variety of rules: avoiding duplicates/overlaps (to continue the example "You already have a reservation for this time/location") logic rules ("You can't rent a house to yourself", "This house is in a different place from your chosen destination") sanity tests ("You've set a rental price that's 10x the normal rate. Are you sure this is the right price?" Things like that. Before I recreate the wheel, I'm wondering if there are already methods out there for doing something like this.

• Problem with SNMP and MIBs

  I am installing Zabbix to monitor via snmp some devices from a machine running Ubuntu 12.04 server. There is a problem with MIB definitions, since snmp commands do no properly translate some of the MIBs. I have already installed the "snmp-mibs-downloader" package, so the files containing the MIB descriptions are properly installed. The MIB are only translated to obtain the numeric key (the MIB files are accessible to the snmp commands), but the results returned by the snmpget command do not properly translate the key. The zabbix templates that I am using do expect the key translated (SNMPv2-MIB::sysUpTime.0) , so, the current results are not recognised and these are ignored. Test case: $ snmptranslate -On SNMPv2-MIB::sysUpTime.0 .1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 $ snmpget -v 2c -c public 192.168.1.1 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 iso.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 = Timeticks: (2911822510) 337 days, 0:23:45.10 On another machine (running a very old Red Hat based distribution), the snmp commands perform both, the directe and reverse traslation, as expected: # snmptranslate -On SNMPv2-MIB::sysUpTime.0 .1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 # snmpget -v 2c -c public 192.168.1.1 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 SNMPv2-MIB::sysUpTime.0 = Timeticks: (2911819485) 337 days, 0:23:14.85 What is the problem on my Ubuntu box? • Dealing With Table Borders In OOXML

Permalink Formatting tables in a document programmatically can be a very complex task.  This is the major reason which we start our document generation projects with templates instead of building components in a document by hand. Borders are on aspect of a table that you may want to fomat.  Borders are used to make certain content in a table stand out.  If you need to conditionally set and remove borders there is something that you need to be aware of.  Even in OOXML you have the concepts of styles, inheriting styles and overriding styles. When Word defines a table it will reference a global style such as “TableGrid”.  This style will include the borders for the table.  Specifically the InsideHorizontalBorder and InsideVerticalBorder define the borders for the cells.  These can be overridden by the TableCellBorders collection of a particular cell.  Adding a double right border on a cell is as easy as the couple of lines of code below. wordprocessing.TableCellBorders borders = new wordprocessing.TableCellBorders(); borders.RightBorder = new RightBorder(){Val = BorderValues.Double, Color = "000000", ThemeColor = ThemeColorValues.Text1, Size = (UInt32Value)4U, Space = (UInt32Value)0U }; cell.TableCellProperties.Append(borders); If I want to revert back to the table’s style for cell borders I simply need to remove all children from the TableCellBorders collection.  It is like removing a class identifier from a TD tag in HTML.  The style in the parent object takes back over. • Choosing a web development framework?

  So, I've sort of reached a point where I want to start developing a website. Originally, I planned to build said website using PHP and CodeIgniter, I'm familiar with both, but, truth be told, I'm not too fond of either. I find they just get rather messy, CodeIgniter helps somewhat, but no matter what, it seems that most PHP comes out more obfuscated than it has to be. Anyways, I've come to the point where I want to either use Python or Ruby. I'm familiar in both, though more so towards Python, but I've never done any web development in them. I'll take the necessary time to learn the frameworks (and further my knowledge in the language of my choosing), but I need to choose one. I don't like either language more than the other, they both have their benefits... However, since I've never done any web development with either language, I was hoping that you guys could give me some pointers. What are the available frameworks for each language? What do you recommend and why? Note: I've primarily looked into Rails and Django - but I'm still open to others. I'm looking for one that will work for just one (or maybe two) developers. It has to be fairly easy to learn (but I will take the time to learn it). Also, I'd like it to easily support clean code and agile development.

  We have installed and configured TFS, we have connected to it using Visual Studio.  Now it is time to get a project created. From Team Explorer, we will right click on the servername\Collection item in the tree to select New Team Project. Once selected, this will open the New Team Project dialog.  Provide a name, then click Next.   The next step is to select a Project Template.  By default you will have 2 available (but there are many downloadable options).  It is important to understand what the templates bring and what options we will live with in the Lifecycle Management option we select. Once selected, click Next. Now we are at the point to specify where our code will be collected, Source Code settings part of the wizard.  Since we are starting new, we will select an empty folder. Click Next. Next we get a Summary view of the options selected. Click Finish. Once the template is downloaded, applied and our choices processed, we have completed the project creation.   This should be our final product …
