• Xenserver boot error

  I'm trying to get Xenserver 5.5 running on a spare computer here, hardware specs: Intel Q6600, 4GB Ram, and Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R motherboard Xenserver itself installs fine onto a 150GB sata hdd, however it fails to boot whatsoever, giving this garbled mess: http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/9918/biosi.jpg it's not frozen because if I press enter it just prints a different garble and it also says "could not find kernel image". The strangest thing is if I put that hdd in my desktop and assign it to a VMWare desktop vm (under the ESX profile no less) it boots perfectly... leading me to believe there are no problems with the install or the hdd itself. From what I can tell the error seems to be occuring completely seperately to Xenserver, in the bootloader extlinux?. If there was a motherboard compatibility issue I would think it would also have manifested during installation, and the fact the problem seems to be with the booting into Xen makes me doubt this. Any ideas guys? (I'm using Xen because it can do PCI passthrough without VT-d.)

• Stuck on Checking battery state at startup in Ubuntu, have splash screen no startup

  I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. When I boot up the computer it goes to the splash but there is no login screen, just the purple background and the mouse cursor. "Checking battery state" is the last line that does not have an "[OK]". When I press Ctr-alt-shift-F1 I can login and sudo stop gdm and startx. However this makes it so that the applets don't show. Error: "The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_notificationAreaApplet" and does it for every single applet. Everything else works fine though. I get a EHCI: BIOS handoff failed twice in the dmesg as well. The laptop has intel mobile integrated graphics. UPDATE: Now my desktop has the exact same problem. Things that I have tried: Changing to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i915.modeset=1 acpi=off"

• win7 amd64 guest in kvm does not have sound

  hi, my host system is gentoo amd64, guest system is win 7 amd64. the guest system can work, except it does not have sound. i start kvm with -soundhw ac97, QEMU_AUDIO_DRV='alsa', and after i get into the guest system, i can see a 'Multimedia Audio Controller' in the device manager. but win7 cannot find the driver for it. i searched the network for a long time, and i cannot find a driver for intel ac97 for win7 amd64. i also tried -soundhw sb16, es1370, none of them work. please help me fix this.

• What is the difference in RAM speeds?

  I am building a new PC with the intel i7-930 processor. I am wanting to use 12gb of RAM for it (6x2gb sticks). Here is some of the RAM I am looking at G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop 2 of these 3 stick kits. They are rated at 1600 however some of the user reviews on that product say they xcould not get it to run at 1600 and the supplier who makes the RAM made a comment that "I7 doesn't support over DDR3 1066" So I am curious, I do not know much about this, I know the more GB of RAM the better but as for the speeds, I am not sure how much of a difference it makes. So can someone explain to me what the difference in performance may be based on speeds of 1200 vs 1600 ram?

  Why would an external eSata Drive (xSonic with 500Gb notebook Hard Drive) run ok on a Silicon Image based PCI-E to eSata adaptor at about 35MB/s, But then run really slow when plugged into NForce4 Sata socket via cable? I have another version of the problem with Really slow 1MB/s!!! performance on a ASUS P5K Pro Motherboard with E8400 CPU. This time the same card is plugged into a PCI-E socket. The same eSata drive is plugged into the Esata port on the card. All this is running on Windows XP Pro 32bit. Any suggestions on how to diagnose the problems??

• Adobe Master Collection CS3 wont run on my Windows 7 64bit

  I have a brand new HP p6230y. My first step after booting it up was to install Master Collection. It installs fine, but when I go to run each of the applications, and they all behave differently. I have re-installed twice already. Photoshop opens, but freezes. Acrobat tells me that I need to reinstall. Nothing else even opens (no freezing, no process in taskman). Any Ideas? • Mac OS X, MySQL Preference Pane doesn't work

  I downloaded and installed MySQL 5.1.47 for OS X 10.6 using the DMG archive: mysql-5.1.47-osx10.6-x86_64.dmg I also installed MySQL.prefPane and MySQLStartupItem.pkg. MySQL.prefPane is a Preference Pane. The problem is, whenever I attempt to start/stop MySQL from the Preference Pane, System Preferences just hangs. It runs at about 50% CPU forever, eventually I have for force quit System Preferences. The same thing happens if I toggle "Automatically Start MySQL Server on Startup". Basically the MySQL Preference Pane is not functional. Note that I have no problem starting MySQL from the command line: sudo /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe I have tried reinstalling MySQL and the Preference Pane. I'm using the standard installation location, nothing out of the ordinary. Every time the MySQL Preference Pane just hangs. I'm doing this on a Macbook Pro (Intel) running OS X 10.6.3. There are no old versions of MySQL on this machine.

• MySQL is killing the server IO.

  I manage a fairly large/busy vBulletin forums (~2-3k requests per second, running on gigenet cloud), the database is ~ 10 GB (~9 milion posts, ~60 queries per second), lately MySQL have been grinding the disk like there's no tomorrow according to iotop and slowing the site. The last idea I can think of is using replication, but I'm not sure how much that would help and worried about database sync. I'm out of ideas, any tips on how to improve the situation would be highly appreciated. Specs : Debian Lenny 64bit ~12Ghz (6 cores) CPU, 7520gb RAM, 160gb disk. • Having issues with flickering output to TV from Windows 7 laptop

  I cannot tell why this is happening. I cannot get a pattern as to when it happens. Sometimes, I watch entire Hulu content without any interruptions. Other times, it happens 2-3 times in a span of 3 minutes. Then it stops for 10-15 minutes. Lenovo T410s Integrated graphics: Intel HD Graphics (Driver=8.15.10.2253, Video BIOS=2026.1) TV is a Zenith (does not happen with other laptop so doubt it's TV) TV connected to laptop using HDMI-to-DVI cable (previously was connected directly via DVI but I bought a new cable and it's still happening) Anyone could help me troubleshoot this? I'd greatly appreciate it. If you need more information, I'll be glad to provide it.

• Troubleshooting server performance with a hosted server?

  We are in a tough spot, we have a hosted server with the following specs: OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 64bit Processor: Intel Xeon X7550 @ 2GHz (8 processors) RAM: 16GB The file system is on a SAN or NAS (not sure). We are seeing very odd issues where a user will open a 25MB .xslb file and it takes literally 60-120 seconds sometimes. The server is just dog slow for excel. Resources are not being pegged, CPU never jumps up, plenty of RAM... it's just oddly slow. Our host has been looking at the issue for several weeks with not much to show for it. Is there a utility I can run myself that will help trackdown our issue? I have found Server Performance Advisor V1.0 Any experience in using it? Our host is ultimately responsible for fixing this, but we are going on 1 month and our users are losing patience. Any tips would be helpful.

• Damaged XenServer Storage LVM partition table

  I have a homeserver running under XenServer control with 3x1TB discs inside, one for XenServer and two mirrored(using Intel's fakeRAID and dmraid) for VMs and a user data(but now I think RAID didn't work). I tried to pass PCI card to VM using PCI-passthroug and I read somewhere that I need to recompile kernel with pciback module but something went wrong(I made mistake in /boot/extlinux.conf and server couldn't run) and I had to use LiveCD of GPartEd(I already had it on USB key) to correct this. But when I re-run the server all VDIs were gone. I have completly no idea what could go wrong. I tried to repair RAID using dmraid -R in the hope that everything will return to noramal but now I think this done more bad than good(and corrupted rest of LVM table...). Is there any possibility to recover this SR or only data from one(~100GB) of VDI? I also wants to apologise for my English, I'm not from English-speaking country and I'm only 16 years old, so I hadn't "time" to learn it(school isn't good place to do this) in sufficient way.

• Windows Resource Monitoring Programs

  I work at a small tech start up managing websites with our own in house server side code. (In production, we use Windows Server 2008 boxes, running Java 6. In our dev boxes, we use Windows 7 running Java 7.) Recently, we had an issue where some of our boxes in production failed, and we didn't have means of trouble shooting, since we keep little to no monitoring logs about a given box's CPU/memory/RAM usage, etc. So, I'm wondering if there is some commercial/freeware that's the standard for performance monitoring/logging. Essentially, I'm just looking for an analytics system that is similar to the Windows Task Manager or the Resource Monitor, that serializes all of its data periodically. Ideally, I'd like to find a program that's also extensible, in case I'd like to add addition monitors in the future.

• Why might login failures cause SQL 2005 to dump and ditch?

  Our SQL 2005 server began timing out and finally stopped responding on Oct 26th. The application logs showed a ton of 17883 events leading up to a reboot. After the reboot everything was fine but we were still scratching our heads. Fast forward 6 days... it happened again. Then again 2 days later. The last night. Today it has happened three times to far. The timeline is fairly predictable when it happens: Trans log backups. Login failure for "user2". Minidump Another minidump for the scheduler Repeated 17883 events. Server fails little by little until it won't accept any requests. Reboot is all that gets us going again (a band-aid) Interesting, though, is that the server box itself doesn't seem to have any problems. CPU usage is normal. Network connectivity is fine. We can remote in and look at logs. Management studio does eventually bog down, though. Today, for the first time, we tried stopping services instead of a reboot. All services stopped on their own except for the SQL Server service. We finally did an "end task" on that one and were able to bring everything back up. It worked fine for about 30 minutes until we started seeing timeouts and 17883's again. This time, probably because we didn't reboot all the way, we saw a bunch of 844 events mixed in with the 17883's. Our entire tech team here is scratching heads... some ideas we're kicking around: MS Cumulative Update hit around the same time as when we first had a problem. Since then, we've rolled it back. Maybe it didn't rollback all the way. The situation looks and feels like an unhandled "stack overflow" (no relation) in that it starts small and compounds over time. Problem with this is that there isn't significant CPU usage. At any rate, we're not ruling SQL 2005 bug out at all. Maybe we added one too many import processes and have reached our limit on this box. (hard to believe). Looking at SQLDUMP0151.log at the time of one of the crashes. There are some "login failures" and then there are two stack dumps. 1st a normal stack dump, 2nd for a scheduler dump. • Sql Server 2005 Service Pack 3 does not install

  I'm trying to install SP3 on an install of Sql Server 2005 running on Server 2003 32 bit. When I run the installer it doesn't seem to recognize that I have SQL Server 2005 installed. The dialog box that asks what features should be updated doesn't show any by default. More troubling, it doesn't allow me to check any of those boxes to update features like Database Services or Reporting Services. When I select one of these services, the "Status" box says "Not Valid". • Ubuntu not connecting to network in Hyper-V

  I am unable to connect the Ubuntu guest (both 12.10 and 12.04) to the internet via hyper-V. Here is what I have done so far (with much thanks due to @Kronos's blog post on the topic): Created a switch in the switch manager with connection set to external, selected my wifi card (Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN). If it matters, the Microsoft Filtering Platform is checked under extensions. Added this switch to my Ubuntu guest. I also tried a different wireless card (Aethros 9285) same issue. Connecting through my wired card works just fine (assume that I select that card, and I am wired in of course). Making it a legacy network adapter does not fix the issue. Ubuntu can see this connection, but is unable to connect to it. What follows is what I attempted to do to get Ubuntu to connect: Start and restart the network manager Restart the machine Verify that it could in fact see the adapter (resulted in device not ready a few times) How can I get this to work properly?

• Fast user switching is logging users off instead of switching users

  I have a netbook running Windows 8.1 Pro that will no longer allow more than one user to be logged in at the same time. The steps necessary to reproduce this are as follows: The current user presses WIN to bring up the start screen. The user clicks his name in the corner and a list of other users appears. As soon as one of the other names is clicked, the user is unceremoniously logged off without any prompts. This behavior seems to have started some time after upgrading to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8. Before that point, everything worked fine and more than one user could be logged in at the same time. I've tried searching for others experiencing similar problems but this appears to be unique. System Details: CPU: Intel Atom N455 @ 1.66 GHz RAM: 1 GB OS: Windows 8.1 Pro w/ Media Center 32-bit

• Virtual dedicated server repetitive draining RAM, OOM constantly

  My linux (fedora red hat 7) virtual dedicated server has been experiencing OOM multiple times a day for the past several days. I thought the issue was with spamd/spamassassin but after disabling this the errors remains. • How do I see what connections are being made?

  My DDWRT router is showing that my computer has a connection count around 600! The router is at 100% CPU use. How can I see what's making all the connections? So far, I've opened up Resource Monitor and checked the network tab. I can sort by which program is using the most network bandwidth (Pale Moon browser), but I can't see what's making all of the connections. Or rather, where all the connections are being toward (trying to find what tab must be making all of these connections). I've also tried netstat -A, but it apparently doesn't show the actual number of connections being made. At least, the list of established connections isn't very long, by any means (like enough to account for the 500+ connections apparently being made.

• Real-time graphing in Java

  I have an application which updates a variable about between 5 to 50 times a second and I am looking for some way of drawing a continuous XY plot of this change in real-time. Though JFreeChart is not recommended for such a high update rate, many users still say that it works for them. I've tried using this demo and modified it to display a random variable, but it seems to use up 100% CPU usage all the time. Even if I ignore that, I do not want to be restricted to JFreeChart's ui class for constructing forms (though I'm not sure what its capabilities are exactly). Would it be possible to integrate it with Java's "forms" and drop-down menus? (as are available in VB) Otherwise, are there any alternatives I could look into? EDIT: I'm new to Swing, so I've put together a code just to test the functionality of JFreeChart with it (while avoiding the use of the ApplicationFrame class of JFree since I'm not sure how that will work with Swing's combo boxes and buttons). Right now, the graph is being updated immediately and CPU usage is high. Would it be possible to buffer the value with new Millisecond() and update it maybe twice a second? Also, can I add other components to the rest of the JFrame without disrupting JFreeChart? • Windows Server 2008 Standard vs. Web

  I'm currently comparing Windows Server 2008 versions to see what to use. What i found is this, that might affect me: RAM: 32GB. (the same) Sockets: 4 (the same) Remote Desktop: 2 (the same) IIS: true (the same) Application Server: Only standard. I will run my server as a single CPU (4 core) 8GB RAM, 2x raid1 web-server running: IIS Asp.net .Net 4 Third part mail server. (Only for sending mail from my web-application) SQL Server Express (My data is not more then 10 GB) Some minor applications for import and export of data. I might use external load balancer if I install a second machine in the future. My question is if you see any reason for me to go for standard that is 4 x price compared to web. BR Andreas

• How to Shutdown PC by Pressing Power Button without asking "Force Close"?

  I always Hibernate my PC. Sometimes when I boot, it does not recognize the mouse/keyboard or any USB devices. I've also setup it to go in sleep in 5 minutes. In that case I can't restart the PC so that USB starts working. When I press the Power button then it starts shutdown but asks confirmation twice, one is for shutdown by force confirmation and then there is one more. When my USB is disabled I can't input these options. So I switch off the power. What I want is that upon pressing Power Button it should at once start shutdown without asking any more confirmations System details: Win-7 Home Premium 64 bit Intel i3 530 Asus P montherboard EDIT: It is Desktop PC

• NAS that supports NZB downloading for around £150 ($220) or less (without hard drive)

  I have seen a number of NAS's that are around that price, but I am worried that they may not be able to handle the processing of .rar files (I know that can be quite CPU intensive). Does anyone have any experiences with sabnzbd or hellanzb - or similar on their NAS? In terms of features the main requirement is NZB downloading - I am quite flexible on the other features. Wifi support would be nice, but not essential. Torrent downloading would also be nice. One disk drive would probably be enough. Easy installation of application would be nice... but again I am sure I can follow a tutorial.
