  • Cell Transitions in Excel 2013 Preview–Fixed

    - by simonsabin
If you’ve downloaded Excel 2013 and been working with it you may have noticed the new cell transition feature. Not sure why they put it in, it feels a bit like the aero interface which I understand has been dropped in windows 8. What you may have found is that the transition is buggy, Excel hangs, of the transition is jumpy. Well I found the fix on http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_home-excel/hardware-acceleration-problem-with-excel-2013/894da202-48c0-4442-a371-955587c1b7c0 For...(read more)

  • Sync profile/data/software for multiple computers?

    - by ultimatebuster
Is it possible to sync all the user settings (interface settings, program settings), as well as programs for multiple computers? Data is not as important, though the settings (which is technically data, but not that kind of data, like music, files...) and applications are. Also, it will not sync the drivers. (Example: 1 computer uses bumblebee and the other uses ATI catalyst, and maybe there's different network drivers.. etc.)

  • What one feature available in other IDEs should be added to Xcode? [closed]

    - by Graham Lee
This is inspired by Which features from other IDEs/editors you wish you have in Visual Studio? Xcode is a very different tool from Visual Studio, with a different feature set. While some of its capabilities are very mature (it had RAD UI layout in Interface Builder since before most other platforms), it lacks some features that e.g. Visual Studio or Eclipse provide. If you could request one feature to be added to Xcode, which would it be? How would that feature help you write better code, or write the same code faster?

  • Using Dynamic LINQ to get a filter for my Web API

    - by Espo
We are considering using the Dynamic.CS linq-sample included in the "Samples" directory of visual studio 2008 for our WebAPI project to allow clients to query our data. The interface would be something like this (In addition to the normal GET-methods): public HttpResponseMessage List(string filter = null); The plan is to use the dynamic library to parse the "filter"-variable and then execute the query agains the DB. Any thoughts if this is a good idea? Is it a security problem?

  • How to connect to database on remote server

    - by user137263
Where there is VPN to remote server and then access to the database via local network interface, how can one establish a remote link between one's computer (with a programme such as Visual Studio 2010) and SQL Server (e.g. 2008 R2) ? Any attempts to create a direct link to the SQL Server are blocked. Whilst the SQL Server can be configured to allow external access, this provides its own host of problems. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • What is UEFI and Secure Boot? How do they affect Ubuntu?

    - by Oxwivi
Discussions and reports about UEFI and Secure Boot has cropped up in many Linux circles, but can anyone summarize it's impacts on Ubuntu and how it affects the general users? I know that UEFI and Secure Boot are separate (not interchangeable), with Secure Boot being a part of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface BIOS specification. PS I do know how it affects Ubuntu, this question is for the benefit of public knowledge.

  • What is the Coded UI feature of VS2010 and VS2012?

    - by TATWORTH
A question recently arose as to what is coded UI? It is a feature of the ultimate and premium versions of Visual Studio 2012 (and 2010).It is described as "Automate user interface tests to validate application UI"Here are some useful links about it:http://codedui101.blogspot.co.uk/2011/07/what-is-codedui.htmlhttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/ee957688.aspxhttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd286726.aspxhttp://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/eng/products/comparehttp://www.dotnetcurry.com/ShowArticle.aspx?ID=798http://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/kmcgrath/Introduction-to-Creating-Coded-UI-Tests-with-Visual-Studio-2010

  • What actions does Ubuntu trigger when battery is low?

    - by blueyed
When the battery is low, the screen gets dimmed after a few seconds already. This appears to be some special power-saving mode, and might be related to the time in org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power.time-low (1200 seconds (20 minutes) the default). While this seems to get triggered by gnome-settings-daemon, I wonder what else Ubuntu does when this happens (e.g. via DBus listeners), or other event listeners that look for a "low battery" state. It seems like something in this regard causes Ubuntu / X / the system to behave more sluggish afterwards (when the laptop is on AC again), and I would like to look into what might be causing this. I could not find anything related via dconf-editor, e.g. in org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power. It appears to get setup via idle_configure in plugins/power/gsd-power-manager.c, but it's probably something more related to something that listens on the DBus interface, which gets notified via e.g.: if (!g_dbus_connection_emit_signal (manager->priv->connection, NULL, GSD_POWER_DBUS_PATH, "org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties", "PropertiesChanged", props_changed, &error)) I could imagine that some "power saving" property gets set, but not unset when AC is available anymore and/or the battery is not low anymore. I have looked at the CPU governor setting (/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor), but it was ondemand. I am using gnome-settings-daemon with awesomeWM on Ubuntu 14.04. gnome-settings-daemon=3.8.6.1-0ubuntu11.1 I've also compared gsd's plugins/power/gsd-power-manager.c with the one from Debian's gnome-settings-daemon-3.12.1, but could not find anything obvious that might have been fixed/changed in this regard. I have managed to trigger the gnome-power-manager's gnome-settings plugin (which dims the screen etc), by patching upower and use it after killing the system's upower daemon. (note that it's probably only energy that is being used by gpm to calculate it by itself). It does not make the system become sluggish.. OTOH I have not heard the speaker's beeping, which might come from the BIOS, which might be involved here, too - or other programs using the kernel's interface on /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/. --- src/linux/up-device-supply.c.orig 2014-06-07 16:48:32.735920661 +0200 +++ src/linux/up-device-supply.c 2014-06-07 16:48:39.391920525 +0200 @@ -821,6 +821,9 @@ supply->priv->energy_old_first = 0; } + percentage = 3.1f; + time_to_empty = 3*60; + energy = 5; g_object_set (device, "energy", energy, "energy-full", energy_full,

  • Defining a service layer: the text-based adventure

    - by Stacy Vicknair
Applications these days have more options than ever for a user interface, and it’s only going to grow. A successful product might require native applications for mobile devices, a regular web implementation, or even a gaming console. These systems often will be centralized and data driven. The solution is one that’s fairly solitary, a service layer! Simply put, take what’s shared and put it behind a physical or abstract layer that defines the boundary between the specific user interface and the shared content.   I know, I know, none of this is complicated. But some times it can be difficult to discern what belongs on which side of the line. For instance, say we’re creating a service that will provide content for both an ASP.NET MVC application and a WP7 application. Although the content served to each application is the same, there are different paradigms and patterns for displaying that data in the different environments. In ASP.NET MVC, you may create a model specific to a page that combines necessary information. In the WP7 application you might require different sets of data that you will connect via MVVM with the view. The general rule of thumb is that any shared content, business rules, or data should exist separately. Any element that is specific to the current UI implementation should be included in a separate library or with the UI implementation itself. The WP7 application doesn’t need my MVC specific model classes. My MVC application doesn’t require those INotifyPropertyChanged viewmodels that the WP7 application depends on. In both cases, there should be additional processing done above the service layer to massage the data to the application’s specific needs.   Service-ocalypse: the text based adventure What helps me the most about deciding whether or not something belongs coupled to the UI implementation or in the shared implementation is thinking of the simplest implementation you could have: a console application. You might have played a game like Peasant’s Quest: The console app is the text based adventure game version of your application. If you’re service was consumed in its simplest form, you would simply have a console based API for it that issues requests. Maybe those requests aren’t SWIM TO BOAT, but they might be CREATE USER JOHN. If I issue a request, I expect that request to be issued to the service. If the service has any exceptions or issues with my input, that business logic should be encapsulated in that service, not implemented in the UI. The service layer should be your functional application in its entirety, and anything above that layer should only assist with the display of that information.

  • Building a Java CMS - What Existing Product Should I Use?

    - by walnutmon
I'm a Java developer and in need of a CMS. I've spent a lot of time reading about, and tinkering with Liferay but am concerned that it doesn't cover two of my three major concerns I need to have many sites with individual domains HTML/CSS designers need to be able to design the website templates, look and feel, and layouts in their own tools without having to worry about writing scripts Site and page building APIs must be understandable so that a custom builder interface can be created and harness the CMS as opposed to hacking it Liferay nails the first bullet point, but the second two appear to be unsolved. Does anyone have experience with a Java CMS that does all three? Or have any idea how to approach the problem if none exists? Has someone has used a Java CMS and has been able to add this functionality give some insight?

What implementation problems has the industry claimed to have solved many times, but are still soaking up all of your time? Examples: Cross platform GUI - mobile devices have blown this issue wide open. OO to RDBMS mapping - how do I map this attribute to that field in that database using that framework. You get the idea. Interface definitions - ..., CORBA, COM, EJB, WSDL, ..., etc Can you think of any others?

  • How do I create a subdomain for a site hosted by someone who does not allow it?

    - by user99572_is_fine
I want to create a subdomain for a site hosted by Jimdo (a DIY website builder). Jimdo does not allow subdomains however. I am trying to find a workaround where a subdomain is hosted elsewhere but everything else remains as it is. E.g. I use their email service and I want to keep it. The domain is not hosted by Jimdo, but by a host that allows me to edit my zones. It points to the Jimdo NS. I have independent hosting where I have NS information. This is where I want to host my subdomain. My thinking was that I could use ZoneEdit as a "fork" that allows me to keep using my Jimdo page like before and, at the same time, directs a subdomain to another host. Provided this is possible: Question: How do I configure ZoneEdit CNAME or NS records to forward visitors to my website and my email to my Jimdo mail account while pointing a subdomain to another host?

  • LOV-Basierte, dynamische Formular-Schnellauswahlen (Quick Picks)

    - by carstenczarski
