  • What training book should I choose after Microsoft's Application Development Foundation (70-536)?

    - by codys-hole
I've just finished 70-536 ("Microsoft .NET Framework - Application Development Foundation") Microsoft training book from Microsoft Press. I found it quite good. I have also done the 70-528 ("Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 - Web-based Client Development") book. What book should I be reading next? I am job hunting, so I want to be marketable for a position as a software developer. What will make me stand out from the crowd and get the job?

  • What should I know before getting involved in Kinect development?

    - by chossen-addict
I'm in the final year of my Computer Science degree, and I'm starting to look at what I can work on as a final-year project. I've been looking at creating a Kinect application, but I'm not sure if I have the necessary background to get involved in its development. What should I know before starting Kinect development? Are there areas of programming I should have a background in in order to understand what I need to do to create a Kinect app?

  • Where can I find some software development freelance/contract positions? [closed]

    - by m-y
I currently have a full time job as a Microsoft.NET developer, but I'd like to supplement my income by doing some part-time freelance development work. Are there any websites (or other sources) out there that specialize in this? While the website (or other source) does not have to be geared specifically for part-time work or Microsoft.NET development, if it is than that would be just wonderful. The only thing I could find close to this was www.vworker.com which is not that great.

  • Did C++11 address concerns passing std lib objects between dynamic/shared library boundaries? (ie dlls and so)?

    - by Doug T.
One of my major complaints about C++ is how hard in practice it is to pass std library objects outside of dynamic library (ie dll/so) boundaries. The std library is often header-only. Which is great for doing some awesome optimizations. However, for dll's, they are often built with different compiler settings that may impact the internal structure/code of a std library containers. For example, in MSVC one dll may build with iterator debugging on while another builds with it off. These two dlls may run into issues passing std containers around. If I expose std::string in my interface, I can't guarantee the code the client is using for std::string is an exact match of my library's std::string. This leads to hard to debug problems, headaches, etc. You either rigidly control the compiler settings in your organization to prevent these issues or you use a simpler C interface that won't have these problems. Or specify to your clients the expected compiler settings they should use (which sucks if another library specifies other compiler settings). My question is whether or not C++11 tried to do anything to solve these issues?

  • Installing javahl on Maverick

    - by Jason
Hi all, I'm trying to get Subclipse working in Eclipse Galeilo, and to do that I have to install the JavaHL library. I installed the library using sudo apt-get install libsvn-java, but the eclipse.ini file has to be modified to take in the new library as an argument. First change to the ini file was -Djava.library.path=/usr/lib/jni/, which produced the errors "no libsvnjavahl-1 in java.library.path" "incompatible javahl library loaded. 1.3.x or later required." according to the install printout, version 1.6.12 was installed. So, I added libsvnjavahl-1.so to the file path above, and produced the following errors: "no libsvnjavahl-1 in java.library.path" "no svnjavahl-1 in java.library.path" "no svnjavahl in java.library.path" What's going on here?

  • Multiple Exception Handlers for one exception type

    - by danish
I am using Enterprose Library 4.1. I have created a custom exception handler called CustomHandler. This is how the configuration section would look like: <exceptionHandling> <exceptionPolicies> <add name="Exception Policy"> <exceptionTypes> <add type="System.Exception, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089" postHandlingAction="NotifyRethrow" name="Exception"> <exceptionHandlers> <add type="WindowsFormsApplication1.CustomHandler, WindowsFormsApplication1" name="Custom Handler" /> <add exceptionMessage="Some test mesage." exceptionMessageResourceName="" exceptionMessageResourceType="" replaceExceptionType="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.ExceptionHandling.ExceptionHandlingException, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.ExceptionHandling" type="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.ExceptionHandling.ReplaceHandler, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.ExceptionHandling" name="Replace Handler" /> </exceptionHandlers> </add> </exceptionTypes> </add> </exceptionPolicies> </exceptionHandling> There are two handlers for same exception type. What I want is that based on a certain condition one of the handlers should handle the exception. Any ideas how that can be done? Is there a way to call the other handler from inside the HandleException method of the custom handler based on some condition?

  • Haskell: 'No instance for' arising from a trivial usage of Regex library

    - by artemave
Following the (accepted) answer from this question, I am expecting the following to work: Prelude Text.Regex.Posix Text.Regex.Base.RegexLike Text.Regex.Posix.String> makeRegex ".*" (makeRegex is a shortcut for makeRegexOpts with predefined options) However, it doesn't: <interactive>:1:0: No instance for (RegexMaker regex compOpt execOpt [Char]) arising from a use of `makeRegex' at <interactive>:1:0-13 Possible fix: add an instance declaration for (RegexMaker regex compOpt execOpt [Char]) In the expression: makeRegex ".*" In the definition of `it': it = makeRegex ".*" Prelude Text.Regex.Posix Text.Regex.Base.RegexLike Text.Regex.Posix.String> make Regex ".*"::Regex <interactive>:1:0: No instance for (RegexMaker Regex compOpt execOpt [Char]) arising from a use of `makeRegex' at <interactive>:1:0-13 Possible fix: add an instance declaration for (RegexMaker Regex compOpt execOpt [Char]) In the expression: makeRegex ".*" :: Regex In the definition of `it': it = makeRegex ".*" :: Regex And I really don't understand why. • JAMES Mailet development process

    - by itsadok
I'm starting a project that involves writing mailets for Apache James. As far as I can tell, the only way to test a change in my code (on Windows) is through the following steps: Compile the mailet code Build a jar file containing the mailet Copy the jar file into the apps/james/SAR-INF/lib directory Start JAMES from run.bat Run test Stop JAMES by telneting to port 4555 and issuing a shutdown command (I guess on Linux a SIGTERM would suffice) I can automate all these steps using Ant and some scripting magic, but I was wondering if I was missing something. Does anyone here have experience developing mailets? Did you use a similar process, or is there an easier way? For example, is there a way to make a running James instance reload the mailets JAR?

  • image filters for iphone sdk development

    - by plsp
Hi All, I am planning to develop an iphone app which makes use of image filters like blurring, sharpening, etc. I noticed that there are few approaches for this one, Use openGL ES. I even found an example code on apple iphone dev site. How easy is openGL for somebody who has never used it? Can the image filters be implemented using the openGL framework? There is a Quartz demo as well posted on apple iphone dev site. Has anybody used this framework for doing image processing? How is this approach compared to openGL framework? Don't use openGL and Quartz framework. Basically access the raw pixels from the image and do the manipulation myself. Make use of any custom built image processing libraries like this one. Do you know of any other libraries like this one? Can anybody provide insights/suggestions on which option is the best? Your opinions are highly appreciated. Thanks!

  • iPhone Development with Bluetooth SPP OS 3/4

    - by nigel-jewell
Hi all, I am in the process of developing an iPhone application that communicates with a number of Bluetooth devices that all support Serial Port Profile - well I assume that it is SPP as they show on my MacBook as Serial Port DevB etc. I understand that iPhone OS 3.x does not support SPP - is that correct? Does anyone know if that has been "fixed" in OS 4? I've seen reports of OS 4 supporting keyboards, but is that a locked version of HID, or will SPP be available via the SDK? Kind Regards, Nige.

  • Installshield Development Error durring the Installation process

    - by Alopekos
Hey guys, I've been stuck by a problem for the past couple days that makes no sense to me. My installer builds fine in the Installshiled IDE but when it is about to finish the installation, int gets two errors then rollbacks: installation failure. Right when the install bar is at about 100%, an error box pops up that states this: "Error 1001.Exception occurred while initializing the installation: System.IO.FileLoadException: Attempt to load an unverifiable executable with fixups (IAT with more than 2 sections or a TLS section.) (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131019)." The box pops up once, then the installer flashes its status to "rollback" then pops up another error box, then once 'ok'ed it procedes to rollback as usual. I don't understand that error message so i looked in the msi loggings and found this: "InstallShield 13:20:08: Initializing Property Bag... For some reason it looks like to me that installshield is trying to launch my program before it finishes the installation, even when I told it to prompt the user to decide to launch. Is this a registering command system that makes it attemp or what? I've been scouring the web all day and I've found some ideas, but I havent seen any solutions as of yet. The installers that I've tried(and failed) have always needed to be Setup.exes, when i try to build a .msi only setup I get this error message. It may help someone who knows more about this system than I do. Your project contains InstallShield prerequisites. A Setup.exe setup launcher is required if you are build a release that includes InstallShield prerequisites. Change your release settings to build Setup.exe, or remove the prerequisites from your project. -7076 There's nothing on the site that has anything from the error code, so I'm at a loss. • F# Powerpack's Metadata doesn't recognize FSharp.Core as an F# library

    - by Nathan Sanders
Here's my test code to isolate the problem: open Microsoft.FSharp.Metadata [<EntryPoint>] let main args = let core = FSharpAssembly.FromFile @"C:\Program Files\FSharp-2.0.0.0\\bin\FSharp.Core.dll" let core2 = FSharpAssembly.FSharpLibrary let core3 = System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.GetAssemblies() |> Seq.find (fun a -> a.FullName.Contains "Core") |> FSharpAssembly.FromAssembly core.Entities |> Seq.iter (printfn "%A") 0 All three lets should give me the same FSharpAssembly. Instead, all 3 throw an exception that FSharp.Core is not an F# assembly (details below, re-formatted for readability). Two more clues: Using the core3 method, I get the same error for the test F# assembly itself I don't get the error at FSI after doing #r "@C:\Program Files...\FSharp.Powerpack.Metadata.dll". Any ideas? I'm using Visual Studio 2008, F# 2.0 and F# Powerpack 2.0.0.0 (May 20, 2010) release on an oldish XP VM, I think it's updated to SP3 though. (I got the error this morning with Powerpack 1.9.9.9, so I upgraded to 2.0.0.0. I thought that if 1.9.9.9 doesn't recognise F#'s 2.0.0.0's assemblies, then maybe bugfixes in Powerpack 2.0.0.0 would help.) Unhandled Exception: System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'Microsoft.FSharp.Metadata.AssemblyLoader' threw an exception. ---> System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for '<StartupCode$FSharp-PowerPack-Metadata>.$Metadata' threw an exception. ---> System.ArgumentException: could not produce an FSharpAssembly object for the assembly 'FSharp.Core' because this is not an F# assembly Parameter name: name at Microsoft.FSharp.Metadata.AssemblyLoader.Add(String name,Assembly assembly) at <StartupCode$FSharp-PowerPack-Metadata>.$Metadata..cctor() --- End of inner exception stack trace --- at Microsoft.FSharp.Metadata.AssemblyLoader..cctor() --- End of inner exception stack trace --- at Microsoft.FSharp.Metadata.AssemblyLoader.Get(Assembly assembly) at Microsoft.FSharp.Metadata.FSharpAssembly.FromAssembly(Assembly assembly) at Program.main(String[] args) in C:\Documents an...\FSMetadataTest\Program.fs:line 11 Press any key to continue . . .

  • Python Image Library, Close method

    - by DNN
Hello, I have been using pil for the first time today. And I wanted to resize an image assuming it was larger than 800x600 and also create a thumbnail. I could do either of these tasks separately but not together in one method (I am doing a custom save method in django admin). This returns a "cannot identify image file" error message. The error is on the line "image = Image.open(self.photo)" after "#if image is size is greatet than 800 x 600 then resize image." I thought this may be because the image is already open, but if i remove the line I still get issues. So I thought I could try closing after creating a thumbnail and then reopening. But I couldn't find a close method.... This is my code: def save(self): #create thumbnail Thumb_Size = (75, 75) image = Image.open(self.photo) if image.mode not in ('L', 'RGB'): image = image.convert('RGB') image.thumbnail(Thumb_Size, Image.ANTIALIAS) temp_handle = StringIO() image.save(temp_handle, 'jpeg') temp_handle.seek(0) suf = SimpleUploadedFile(os.path.split(self.photo.name)[-1], temp_handle.read(), content_type='image/jpg') self.thumbnail.save(suf.name+'.jpg', suf, save=False) #if image is size is greatet than 800 x 600 then resize image. image = Image.open(self.photo) if image.size[0] > 800: if image.size[1] > 600: Max_Size = (800, 600) if image.mode not in ('L', 'RGB'): image = image.convert('RGB') image.thumbnail(Max_Size, Image.ANTIALIAS) temp_handle = StringIO() image.save(temp_handle, 'jpeg') temp_handle.seek(0) suf = SimpleUploadedFile(os.path.split(self.photo.name)[-1], temp_handle.read(), content_type='image/jpg') self.photo.save(suf.name+'.jpg', suf, save=False) #enter info to database super(Photo, self).save()

  • SIM Application Toolkit development

    - by Asaf R
Hi, I'm designing a client/server cellular application, and am considering using SIM Application Toolkit for part of it. Where are there good resource to get started with learning the technologies available for SIM cards? I'm more interested in understanding the benefits of existing technologies, their percent of the installed base, limitations, etc. and less interested in how to write code (for now). Thanks, Asaf.

  • Best Non-Microsoft/.NET Development Blogs and Podcasts

    - by Mark Lubin
I really don't want to rile anyone's feathers and I really enjoy blogs like Joel, Coding Horror, Scott Hanselman, etc. However, what are some good blogs/podcasts that focus on other platforms besides Microsoft based ones or maybe even no particular platform at? In particular I am interested in areas like Python, Ruby, Java, C, but any area besides Microsoft fits the bill. There may be other similar questions to this but I think this one is unique since we might get some answers we wouldn't see otherwise, that is, everyone knows Coding Horror is great. Please try to refrain from religious debates; the content of the blog is more important than the platform they are talking about, I just want to get an idea of what is out there and worth the time.
