  Hello: I am new to the Amazon EC2 services and I am planning to host a Windows based vm on Amazon. I have lot of fuzziness about AMIs on Amazon. So my first question would be, am I be able to install softwares and frameworks(e.g. Silverlight, .NET, etc) on a existing Windows instance that I select? And if not, how can I create a custom AMI so that I can install these softwares that I need before I submit it to Amamzon and launch? Thanks a lot for your help :) Deeply appriciated

• Godaddy registrar and Amazon Web Services EC2/Route 53

  Ok - I currently have a site hosted on Godaddy and they are the registrar for my domain. My goal is to have my site hosted on AWS with an EC2 server, which I have already set up and it is ready to go. In order to migrate my domain name to Amazon I have set up an A record with Godaddy and another A record with Route 53 (Amazon's routing service) with both of them pointing to the new static IP of the AWS site. My question is - Godaddy told me that I should leave my nameservers as Godaddy since my email is with them and set up an MX record wit Amazon pointing to it. Does this sound correct? Can you leave nameservers with Godaddy and have A records pointed to the new IP? Are there any benefits/cons to this? *FOR THE RECORD - My site is DOWN right now after doing the change - Godaddy says it will take 2 hours to come back, but I'm not sure if their nameserver recommendation is correct.

  Java 6 is now certified with Oracle Application Server 10g Forms and Reports with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 (12.0.6, 12.1.1 and higher). What? Wasn't this already certified? No, but a little background might be useful in understanding why this is a new announcement. We previously certified the use of Java 6 with E-Business Suite Release 12 -- with the sole exception of Oracle Application Server 10g components in the E-Business Suite technology stack. Oracle Application Server 10g originally included Java 1.4.2 as part of its distribution.  E-Business Suite 12 uses, amongst other things, the Oracle Forms and Reports 10g components running on Java 1.4. Java 1.4 in the Oracle Application Server 10g ORACLE_HOME is used exclusively by AS 10g Forms and Reports' for Java functionality.  This version of Java is separate from the Java distribution used by other parts of EBS such as Oracle Containers for Java (OC4J). What's new about this certification? You can now upgrade the older Java 1.4 libraries used by Oracle Forms & Reports 10g to Java 6. This allows you to upgrade the Java releases within the Oracle Application Server 10g ORACLE_HOME to the the same level as the rest of your E-Business Suite technology stack components. Why upgrade? • Error after installing mysqlnd_ms

  I am working on Amazon EC2 using the Amazon Linux AMI which is based on CentOS. I have installed php54 and php54-mysqlnd. I then do a "sudo pecl install myslqnd_ms" This installs fine. I add the extension into the php.ini file. Then I start httpd, and when I do in the error log I see: PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib64/php/modules/mysqlnd_ms.so' - /usr/lib64/php/modules/mysqlnd_ms.so: undefined symbol: mysqlnd_globals in Unknown on line 0 Googling this lead me to: https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=62276&edit=1 and http://forums.famillecollet.com/viewtopic.php?id=242 neither of which helped me much. I am trying to stick to stock pre built binaries from the main YUM repo if possible. What would be the best solution here? Thanks in advance

• Restoring WordPress EC2 instance from snapshot results in 403 Forbidden error

  This problem has been perplexing me for weeks now. Here's how the issue goes: Launch Amazon Linux 64-bit instance, successfully install WordPress, and site is active w/ no issues Create snapshot of the instance's root volume Shut down instance Create volume from snapshot, attach to instance, and reboot instance Associate Elastic IP with instance Once that's done and I try logging onto the site, I am redirected to myurl.com/wp-admin/install.php and greeted with this message: Forbidden: You don't have permission to access /wp-admin/install.php on this server. Apache/2.2.25 (Amazon) Server at www.myurl.com Port 80 Port 80 is open on the inbound security group settings, so that's not the issue. Keep in mind all I am doing is merely creating a new volume and attaching it to the same instance, and this issue comes up. What am I doing wrong, and how can I create a complete backup of my instance without this error occuring?

Currently, my instance is loaded with mysql, php etc (ALL IN ONE). However how do i ensure my instances is scaling? E.g if i have a site that is suppose to be handled using 3 instances and using amazon rds.   I am trying to make a windows 2008 AMI that is a nice clean 64bit starter pack (IIS, SQL express, ASP.NET MVC, etc...) I would like to make it a public AMI when its done. There in lies the problem. I can make an AMI from my image no problem. But I can't seen to get new instances to generate their own passwords.. The results are that I have a new instance that works great with my password. So what is the process of making my EBS backed Instances convert into an AMI that will auto-generate its password and do all the other setup steps that amazon wants to go thru when a new instance starts up? • AWS VPC - why have a private subnet at all?

  In Amazon VPC, the VPC creation wizard allows one to create a single "public subnet" or have the wizard create a "public subnet" and a "private subnet". Initially, the public and private subnet option seemed good for security reasons, allowing webservers to be put in the public subnet and database servers to go in the private subnet. But I've since learned that EC2 instances in the public subnet are not reachable from the Internet unless you associate an Amazon ElasticIP with the EC2 instance. So it seems with just a single public subnet configuration, one could just opt to not associate an ElasticIP with the database servers and end up with the same sort of security. Can anyone explain the advantages of a public + private subnet configuration? Are the advantages of this config more to do with auto-scaling, or is it actually less secure to have a single public subnet?

• Amazon.com Cutting Off Colorado Affiliates

  I received an email from Amazon.com today, essentially cutting off my affiliate status because I'm in Colorado. Colorado recently passed legislation that requires retailers to either collect sales tax for on-line transactions or engage in an onerous process that makes you wish you had collected sales tax.  After I Tweeted this, Mike Jones tweeted a link to the legislation.  Here's an excerpt from Amazon.com's email: "Dear Colorado-based Amazon Associate: We are writing from the Amazon Associates Program to inform you that the Colorado government recently enacted a law to impose sales tax regulations on online retailers. The regulations are burdensome and no other state has similar rules. The new regulations do not require online retailers to collect sales tax. Instead, they are clearly intended to increase the compliance burden to a point where online retailers will be induced to "voluntarily" collect Colorado sales tax -- a course we won't take. We and many others strongly opposed this legislation, known as HB 10-1193, but it was enacted anyway. Regrettably, as a result of the new law, we have decided to stop advertising through Associates based in Colorado. We plan to continue to sell to Colorado residents, however, and will advertise through other channels, including through Associates based in other states. There is a right way for Colorado to pursue its revenue goals, but this new law is a wrong way. As we repeatedly communicated to Colorado legislators, including those who sponsored and supported the new law, we are not opposed to collecting sales tax within a constitutionally-permissible system applied even-handedly.   Hi I have created an Amazon EC2 Instance that provides Windows Server 2008 with SQL Sever 2008 pre-installed. Now in order to use the SQL Server for creating databases, or restoring backups of the databases that I have on my local machine, I need the "sa" password for SQL Server 2008. I have tried using the following but with no luck: sa password "blank password" "same password as the admin password for my EC2 instance" Could someone please guide me as to how to get started with using the Amazon EC2 Datacenter with respect to the "sa" password. • Amazon S3 components for Delphi 2010

  Besides the Amazon Integrator from /n software, are there any other Amazon S3 components available that can be used with Delphi 2010? I would use the one from /n software, but it has some issues (e.g. GetObjectInfo doesn't work if the object is stored in a specific location) and limitations (e.g. copying objects doesn't let you define replacement meta-data). I don't have the time or resources to create such a component myself. Thanks!

  I needed to start a new EC2 instance today and decided to try out the new spot instances, where you can reduce your instance cost by bidding on the maximum per-hour price you're prepared to pay. Since today's spot price was only 35c / hour, compared with 85c / hour for an on-demand instance, I was wondering: if I just bid a really high price, say $1 / hour, can I effectively be sure of getting a much cheaper long-running instance than an on-demand instance (since the spot instances are only charged by the current spot price) ? I suppose it's theoretically possible for the spot price to go over the on-demand price, but as far as I can tell from the data on the AWS site, the spot price has always been well below that.

• Troubleshooting Amazon EC2 reboot

  We've had a server (CentOS) running in EC2 for a few months. It had been going pretty smoothly until today when we got an alarm that the server was unavailable (HTTP service couldn't be reached). So I tried SSHing into the box but that timed out as well. I logged into the EC2 console and it said the instance was running and there wasn't anything in the system log. One odd thing I noticed is that even though we have an Elastic IP attached to it (which shows in the Elastic IP management area), the instance detail is not showing that there is an EIP associated with the instance. I looked through the message log and the last thing I see around the time we got our alert was the dhclient renewed the lease. I'm guessing there may have been some sort of issue with the networking. How might I check if that was the problem, or if there were any other issues that may have caused our instance to stop responding?

  The title of the question might be misleading because I'm not an expert and I'm trying to learn the proper terminology. That being said, I'm wondering if it's possible to setup a wildcard DNS record for any number of dot separation in domain names and have them all point to the network root. This is for WordPress multisite, users will have the option of choosing a mapped domain name, I want to configure my DNS so that both mysite.co.uk.network.com and mysite.com.network.com are valid (I realize this is a but ugly, but WordPress multisite requires that each site have a unique site_url and I'd prefer to preserve the period-delimited appearance if it's possible).

• Amazon AWS Ec2 instance, Elastic IP, Domain name from external domainseller, and Google Apps for Email

  We are hosting our site on an Ec2 instance. Our Elastic IP is w.x.y.z and Public DNS is: ec2-w-x-y-z.compute-1.amazonaws.com. We've bought a domain name domainname.com from a lesser known domain-name-seller. We added an A-record pointing domainname.com to w.x.y.z. Will this work or do we need a CNAME record to point to the same too? We wanted to use Google apps for emailing so adjusted the TXT/MX records according to the Google Apps instructions to be able to send/recv email using @domainname.com email addresses. Have we got it right, more important, we came across queries relating to email sent from ec2-w-x-y-z.compute-1.amazonaws.com (our users can send email from their onsite accounts) going to spam (rDNS not pointing to domainname.com but to ec2-w-x-y-z.compute-1.amazonaws.com). How can we fix this? We came across SPF records, do they provide a complete solution? We aren't sure as to how to use them. Can you help pls? Thank you, Sid

  This is the command I am told to use by clicking connect in the control panel "ssh -i private_key.pem root@instancePublicDNS" Well that one failed so I wanted to know what happen so I ran "ssh -vvv private_key.pem root@instancePublicDNS" OpenSSH_4.6p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8e 23 Feb 2007 debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0 debug1: Connecting to private_key.pem [...] port 22. debug1: connect to address ... port 22: Attempt to connect timed out without establishing a connection ssh: connect to host private_key.pem port 22: Bad file number Any Ideas? • Amazon EC2 Reserved Instances: "Heavy Utilization" clarification

  Should be another easy one here, but I need clarification on what they define as "heavy utilization" for Reserved Instance types. From their Website: Heavy Utilization RIs – Heavy Utilization RIs offer the most absolute savings of any Reserved Instance type. They’re most appropriate for steady-state workloads where you’re willing to commit to always running these instances in exchange for our lowest hourly usage fee. With this RI, you pay a little higher upfront payment than Medium Utilization RIs, a significantly lower hourly usage fee, and you’re charged that lower hourly rate for every hour in the Reserved Instance term you purchase. Using Heavy Utilization RIs, you can save up to 41% for a 1-year term and 58% for a 3-year term vs. running On-Demand Instances. If you’re trying to find a break-even utilization, you’re economically advantaged using Heavy Utilization RIs (vs. On-Demand Instances) if you plan to use your instance more than 43% of a 1-year term or 79% of a 3-year term. I'm assuming that, if I'm planning on running a 24/7 Web Server, then regardless of how many resources I consume (bandwidth, cpu cycles, memory), I would want to go with a Heavy Utilization Reserved Instance? This one Web Server in particular will likely barely budge the cpu, but it needs to be up and running 24/7. Not 100% on what they're defining as "heavy".
