  • What is the best CPU I could get for my old setup?

    On my current not-so-good desktop computer, I'm currently running an Intel Core 2 Duo E6550-CPU, and I'm thinking of buying a newer one now that these must be cheap on E-bay and the like. Being a software guy, I'd be grateful for any help in identifying what CPUs that would fit my motherboard so I don't buy a processor which won't work with my computer. It might not be worth it however, since the SATA2-drive is currently what's bottlenecking my system, but I'm still curious about what could be done except for buying an SSD-drive.     Why do we have commands like push and pop? From what I understand pop and push are basically the same as doing a (mov then add) and (sub then mov) on esp respectively. For example wouldn't: pushl %eax be equivalent to: subl $4, %esp movl %eax, (%esp-4) please correct me if stack access is not (%esp-4), I'm still learning assembly The only true benefit I can see is if doing both operation simultaneously offers some advantage; however I don't see how it could.

    Hello What is a speed of cache accessing for modern CPUs? How many bytes can be read or written from memory every processor clock tick by Intel P4, Core2, Corei7, AMD? Please, answer with both theoretical (width of ld/sd unit with its throughput in uOPs/tick) and practical numbers (even memcpy speed tests, or STREAM benchmark), if any. PS it is question, related to maximal rate of load/store instructions in assembler. There can be theoretical rate of loading (all Instructions Per Tick are widest loads), but processor can give only part of such, a practical limit of loading.

  • Caching DNS server (bind9.2) CPU usage is so so so high.

    Hi, I have a caching-only dns server which get ~3k queries per second. Here is specs: Xeon dual-core 2,8GHz 4GB of RAM Centos 5x (kernel 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5PAE) bind 9.4.2 rndc status: recursive clients: 666/4900/5000 About 300 new queries (not in cache) per second. Bind always uses 100% on one core on single-thread config. After I recompiled it to multi-thread, it uses nearly 200% on two core :( No iowait, only sys and user. I searched around but didn't see any info about how bind use CPU. Why does it become bottleneck? One more thing, here is RAM usage: cat /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 4147876 kB MemFree: 1863972 kB Buffers: 143632 kB Cached: 372792 kB SwapCached: 0 kB Active: 1916804 kB Inactive: 276056 kB I've set max-cache-size to 0 to make sure bind can use as much RAM as it want, but it always stop at ~2GB. Since every second we got not cached queries so theoretically RAM must be exhausted but it wasn't. Do you have any idea? TIA, -Gk

    I have 2 VMs running as guests on a KVM virtualization platform running on Ubuntu 10.04. One VM is an Ubuntu 10.04 system, the other is a Windows 7 system. When both machines are completely logged out, the Linux machine uses 1% CPU, the Windows one 45-50%, according to top. The graphs in virt-manager seem to back this up. Theres nothing installed on the Win7 image that would be running in the background; its as fresh as can be. Why is the Windows VM using so much more than the Linux VM, when both are logged out and idling?

I want to track the usage like: Who (IP Address) initiated the print task Time Status: Success or Failure How many Pages Color or Gray Scale etc. I checked the manuals and nothing about this requirement is available. The built-in control panel log displays only last 10 activities. Is there a way to track these information? Is there an API avaialble so that I can make an application myself?

  • Good free software to track and graph memory and CPU usage on Windows?

    There are many questions on Linux memory tracking, but I haven't seen any for Windows. In my case however its a Windows XP Pro box I need to track the memory and CPU usage of. The reason I need it is due to a server program I'm trying that is eating all my processor and some of my memory which is freezing my RDP session and System Explorer and even makes it difficult to login physically. As this is a very constrained server I'm working off of (768 MB RAM with Pentium 4 which disappears with this program), I need a program that doesn't run/require a webserver. I can give it a MySQL database if necessary however. Is there any suggestions for such a program?

  • How to monitor RAM usage for Hyper-V VMs ?

    A bit of context first : on Windows 2008 Standard x64 with 8Gb RAM, I have 5 VMs running which should take up 1664Mb RAM (3*256Mb+384Mb+512Mb). There is nothing else running on this server except the basic OS components (this not a Core installation). I know that each VM will use more RAM on the host than what has been configured in Hyper-V. But when I run the task manager, it says 6.7Gb used ! If I sum up the RAM used by each process in the task manager (showing all users processes), I get to something around 1Gb... So : how can I check how much RAM each VM is really using on the host (it does not seem to be available via task manager) ? Note that I am aware of the fact that my problem could be unrelated to VM RAM usage, but I would still very much like to know how to do this.

  • IP Helper service uses 50-60% CPU every 1 minute for 3-4 seconds on Windows 7

    I have checked everything - all the processes in the process explorer. IP Helper service is causing CPU usage of over 50 % every 1 minute for 3-4 seconds then comes back to normal. In the task manager, the process is svchost.exe and the service is iphlpsvc.   • High CPU usage on Linux machine

    I have a piece of java code running on two different machines, but on one of the linux machines, the code uses alot of CPU (close to 100% cpu usage). On the other machine the same code uses less cpu (under 3 to 4%). The machine where cpu usage is high, is a more powerful machine, more CPU and and more memory. This has started happening recently and performance on the machine with high cpu usage has degraded significantly. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas why something like this could happen, possible causes behind this etc. any guesses? No recent changes in hardware were made, no recent code updates... Thank you.

  • Task Manager: VM Size smaller than Mem usage?

    The windows XP tasks manager can show two different columns regarding the memory usage of the processes. One is called Mem Usage and the other is VM Size (not on by default, you need to activate it) From what I've gathered, VM size is the size of the entire memory space occupied by the process and Mem Usage is the amount of memory currently committed and used. This assumption is verified by most processes when the VM Size is only slightly larger than Mem Usage for instance my Outlook currently has 79,724 K in VM Size and 56,600 K in Mem Usage But it fails for other processes such as Firefox which currently has 171,900 K for Mem Usage and only 156,440 K in VM Size. How can a process use more memory than the amount of virtual memory allocated to it? So Maybe my interpretation of these columns is wrong. What do they actually mean?

    I am develops guy working for an e-commerce company I am running my e-commerce application built using ruby on rails spree commerce. I am presently running 2 medium instances in the production. One is a high memory instance which has 3.8 RAM and single Core CPU and another one is high CPU instance which has Dual Core CPU. Basically AWS calls it has m1.medium and c1.medium instance respectively. My question is it possible to separate the processes according the cpu intense and memory intense? So that all the cpu intense process can be made run in high cpu instance and all the memory intense process can be made to run in the high memory instances. Is any tool available to identify those process. Kindly give me some heads up. Thank you

  • LINQ to SQL : Too much CPU Usage: What happens when there are multiple users.

    I am using LINQ to SQL and seeing my CPU Usage sky rocketting. See below screenshot. I have three questions What can I do to reduce this CPU Usage. I have done profiling and basically removed everything. Will making every LINQ to SQL statement into a compiled query help? I also find that even with compiled queries simple statements like ByID() can take 3 milliseconds on a server with 3.25GB RAM 3.17GHz - this will just become slower on a less powerful computer. Or will the compiled query get faster the more it is used? The CPU Usage (on the local server goes to 12-15%) for a single user will this multiply with the number of users accessing the server - when the application is put on a live server. i.e. 2 users at a time will mean 15*2 = 30% CPU Usage. If this is the case is my application limited to maximum 4-5 users at a time then. Or doesnt LINQ to SQL .net share some CPU usage.

    Does image block save internet bandwidth usage. I have a data capped plan from my ISP ( 5GB at 2mbps and thereafter 256 kpbs / pm). I doubt if the addon or other similar addon actually saves bandwidht. Here is my point of view, pls correct if that is wrong. When a request is sent to the server, the server sends out whatever page it's requested to serve with all its text and images etc. So essentially my ISP has made his pipe available for the data to reach me thus he would count those bytes under my data plan. When the data arrives it's all first stored to my browser cache (folder) area which means all the data has actually been received by me/computer using my ISP's pipe. The browser then fetches those data from the cache and displays it. By hitting the stop button or blocking images via ur addon I am just choosing not to display the data which would remain in the cache or eventually be discarded if still on the network pipe after a timeout limit. The point is the data request have been completed by the ISP and so the data would be metered and thus using addon such as image block or hitting stop button while page is loading does not in any way save internet bandwidth.   • Large uploaded file won't display in Ubuntu One but is included in file usage

    On Ubuntu 10.04, I uploaded a single 711 MB. My total file usage in Ubuntu One went up to 877MB, which is about right, but the file doesn't show in Ubuntu One so I can't download or delete it. Either the file is there and I can't see it for some reason. Or the file is not there and the total file usage figure is wrong. Does anyone know what has happened? I have a free account but am well below my 5GB limit.

    I use 'htop' to monitor my web server. It's recently quite loaded and the Load average is showing something like this: Load average: 3.10 2.56 1.63 I searched the web about these numbers and I found an article about it: http://blog.scoutapp.com/articles/2009/07/31/understanding-load-averages In the article, it says if I have 2 CPUs, 2.0 means 100% CPU utilization. And my VPS has two CPUs, so what does 3.1 mean? How could it exceed 100% CPU utilization? And from these numbers, does it mean I should be wary about the loading now? But the performance seems totally fine, and this is a managed VPS, the hosting company has not notified me any warning about it. During day time, Load average always show these high numbers... here is another snapshot while writing. Load average: 3.03 2.77 1.97 Load average: 0.41 1.29 1.60 <---- 5 more minutes later So I am wondering how much room left for this site to grow in current configurations? What kind of proactive actions I should take in advance? I don't want to wait until the server bursts. Thanks.
