  • Keeping up with Technology

    If you're like me, you have a hard time keeping up with all the technologies out there. The reality is there's too many new technologies (languages, methodologies,  tools, etc). One of the ways I try to keep up with everything is by using good ol' RSS feeds in conjunction with Google Reader. Google Reader is both an online aggregator of RSS feeds, and it also has a good companion app on Google Android. The nicest part of Google Reader for me is the "All Listings" view which gives me a reverse chronological view of ALL articles (mixed together) regardless of the actual RSS feed.  This way, I get to see the newest articles first. I can then choose to hide the articles I've viewed, etc. Here is a list of my RSS feeds. Admittedly, some of these are all over the spectrum. But you might find one or two interesting. .NET Rocks!   • Video for an ads-driven web-site

    I have a website, wich i will fill with a bunch of useful videos. I've implemented an ads rotation engine for articles and will do so for videos. The next milestone is to decide, how video will be integrated. They are two ways: To host videos myself. Pros: complete freedom. Cons: need tens of gigabytes of storage; support for multiple formats to be crossbrowser and crossdevice. Use Youtube. Pros: Very simple to use; nothing to do. What are pros and cons for each way ? Some questions for YouTube: Will i be able to control playback of YouTube-embedded video to make post-rolls ? What is ranking impact on my web-site, when most of pages will refer to YouTube ? Will, say, iPad play video, embedded via YouTube's iframe ? Does relying entirely on YouTube have a long-term perspective for a web-site, that should bring money ?

  • HTMLUNIT Facebook javascript warning

    Hi I am trying to create simple application that would be able to search people on facebook using given e-mail. I am already able to log into an account using the HTMLunit tool and even create a page, which should throw result of my search. But when I try to print the result as XML the file is missing some blocks of javascript results (I can tell that they are missing by comparing file created by my application and source code, that can be viewed by using IE) Is there any way around this? I just need to get the same result IE's showsource function does. Thanks a lot.   • ColdFusion Server crash after thousands of HTTP requests

    We are running ColdFusion 8 on a windows server 2003 VPS with an API that exposes student records to a partner API through a connector. Our API returns around 50k student records serialized in XML format pretty seamlessly. My question originates when something very frightening happened today when we tested our connector to our partners API. Our entire website and web host went down. We assumed that our host was just having some issues and after 4 hours with no resolution and no response from their customer service we finally got a response from them claiming that they had an "unauthorized user" in their network. After our server was back up we were unable to connect to our website as if the web service or coldfusion itself had froze. This is really where my concern comes from as I fear we may have overloaded the web service. As I mentioned before we tried sending over 50k HTTP POST requests over to our partner's API, however everything stopped after around 1.6k Is this bad practice or is there some sort of rate limiting I can relax somewhere in server configuration? We managed to find a workaround, but it bypasses our connector which is critical to our design. This would have been a one time deal as the purpose of so many requests was to populate our partner's website with current data, after that hourly syncs will keep requests down to around 100 per hour. UPDATE Our partner API is owned and operated by Pardot. We are converting students to prospects by passing student data to their API which unfortunately only seems to accept one student at a time. For that reason we have to do all 50k requests individually. Our server has 4GB of RAM, an Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.8GHz running Windows Server 2003 SP2. I monitored the server during a 100 student sync, a 400 student sync, and a 1.4k student sync with the following results: 100 students - 2.25GB of Memory, 30-40% CPU utilization, 0.2-0.3% network bandwidth 400 students - 2.30GB of Memory, 30-50% CPU utilization, 0.2-1.0% network bandwidth 1.4k students - 2.30GB of Memory, 30-70% CPU utilization, 0.2-1.0% network bandwidth I know this is a far cry from 50k students, but I don't want to risk taking down our CMS system again assuming that was the cause.     I am a bit confused with HTTP lately. Some facts are that TCP can operate connection orientated or connectionless this I understand. TCP though is connection-oriented while UDP is connectionless which is used when the message itself can be fit into a single message. Question: If HTTP uses TCP, and TCP provides reliable conjnections for multiple message excahnge, and HTTP is said to be connectionless then how is this possible? TCP is connection-oriented? So how is HTTP connectionless????

    Just by messing around a little it seems that the video stream is not ascii. i tested by downloading the stream. It would be insane if it was. Theres so many videos. So that couldnt be it. Youtube seems to not work with javascript disable (not counting mobile if true). How is it being done? is it javascript magic? is the SWF running the video through a filter in realtime? (I doubt its a native filter so how is the filter compiled) its really cool. I cant imagine how this is running realtime yet it is!

Given the following: 1) I own a domain name foobar.com purchased from another registrar (not from Wordpress.com). 2) I have purchased the Custom Domain option on Wordpress.com, and have completed the configuration to make foobar.com resolve to foobar.wordpress.com. 3) I will establish an external site for a store, such as store.yahoo.com/foobar. 4) I want to redirect the subdomain store.foobar.com to store.yahoo.com/foobar. How do I set up the Custom DNS records within Wordpress.com to accomplish this subdomain redirection, while leaving foobar.com pointed to my Wordpress blog?     I'm wondering if it's possible to send a response every second or so to a single http request. Like for example the client makes an http request, then the server sends a space character every second. This could be never ending or with a limit, for example a minute. I think the word 'response' is misleading in this context, since I don't necessarily mean an http response. The whole http response could be composed of the space characters, which would mean a single http response to a single http request, except that it is a minute long. I tried chunked encoding but I don't think it works, or at least my implementation's wrong.

  • Hyper-V 2012 and VM web server http

    I have a a few windows 2008 R2 Datacenter machines and a few windows 2012 Datacenter machines. I was runnin RedHat 6.2 VM on 2008 and all my other servers could access it over http until I put a VM up on 2012. No mater what I have done, (turned off selinux, firewall, iptables), on both RedHat servers has allowed them to pass http traffic. They can ping each other and ssh to each other but not http. I tried turning off the windows firewalls to, but no joy. I then moved the RedHat VM to the 2012 server and now the two RedHat VM's can http to each other, but none of the other vm's on other 2012 and 2008 servers can communicate over http. Anyone have some insight?

    Already set up my local net configuration to be monitored by Nagios3. I found a problem that Nagios3 reports a warning in the HTTP monitoring service of a Debian server set at ip 192.168.1.52, that has an individual virtual host and a mass virtual host for application development. I get this status message: HTTP WARNING: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found I used the Nagios tools to check. servername is the name of the vhost server name I used in the Apache configuration. /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_http -H servername -I 192.168.1.52 receiving this status message: HTTP OK HTTP/1.1 200 OK - 37900 bytes in 0.504 seconds |time=0.503946s;;;0.000000 size=37900B;;;0 But when I check like this: /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_http -I 192.168.1.52 I get the same status message as the warning, so I assume that I don't have Nagios completely well set up because doesn't recognize the vhosts for that server, how it should be as the check_http service shows. Where should I look to fix that warning?

    Simple question but:- We have a server running Domino Http server on port 80. We have another apache server running on 8081. We want to set a DNS entry (say 'Things') to point to a page on the 8081 server. As I see it we need to do some kind of redirect on the Domino server to say that any traffic from hostname 'Things' gets a redirect to "http://server:8081/content/". So, in summary, if I type in "http://Things" on my browser I get redirected to "http://server:8081/content/" Does anyone know how to do this on the Domino Http server?     I am running a FreeBSD server and I want to redirect a specific website domain to another domain including subdirectory. I want to bypass that domain to alter the XML results it returns. I tried the hosts file solution, but that way I can only redirect to an IP address without subdir. So that's no solution. Is there another way to solve this? Installing something on the server if needed is not a problem. Unless it's a heavy program.

    Hello, I'm trying to figure out how to access from my development machine (Devel) to a third party web service (www.domain.com) which I am not allowed to directly contact using my office IP address. Here's a basic diagram (i'm not allowed to post images...): http://yuml.me/diagram/scruffy/class/%5BDevel%5D-%5BA%5D,%20%5BA%5D-%5BB%5D,%20%5BB%5D-%5Bwww.domain.com%5D The only machine allowed to access that service is B (production server) but I do neither can directly access it from my development machine (Devel). So in order to access the web service I have to ssh into A, and then from A to B to access www.domain.com Is there any way of tunneling traffic from B to A and then back to my development machine so I can directly access www.domain.com without having to ssh into every box? Devel: My development machine. A, B: Linux servers. I own root access on both. B: Production server www.domain.com: Third party HTTP API production server uses.
