• Name typing in the "TO" line for last name recognition

  I have outlook 2010 on a Windows 7 laptop. When I go to send an email at the "TO" line and I start typing the name, if I start to enter the last name it will not recognize anyone in my contacts and will not auto-populate a list of all the names that fit the description of what I have typed so far. But if I start typing the first name first it will start this auto-choice feature based on what I have typed so far. The company I work for has 20k + employees and If I want to email someone like "Michael Hutch " if I type "Michael" it still gives me like 800 names to chose from. My old laptop that had 2003 Outlook on it, had this functionality. Is there a way to enable this in Outlook 2010?

• How can I get started programming OpenGL on Mac OS X?

  I'm trying to start OpenGL programming on a Mac, which brings me into unknown territory on a lot of things. During the day, I'm a Web Developer, working in C# and before that in PHP and Delphi, all on Windows. During the night, I try to pick up Mac/OpenGL skills, but everything is so different. I've been trying to look for some books, but the OpenGL books are usually for iOS (tons of them out there) and the Mac Books usually cover "normal" application Development. I want to start simple with Pong, Tetris and Wolfenstein. I see that there are a bunch of different OpenGL Versions out there. I know about OpenGL ES 1&2, but I don't know about the "big" OpenGL Versions - which ones are commonly supported on 10.6 and 10.7 on current (2010/2011) Macs? Are there any up to date (XCode 4) books or tutorials? I don't want to use a premade Engine like Unity yet - again, I know next to nothing about any Mac development.

• Cannot access BIOS on a Lenovo U410

  I recently took a step into Linux on my Lenovo Idea pad U410; after a couple hours I managed to get it installed with the drivers. However now I no longer have the ability to access the BIOS. I tried the usual FN+F2, F2,F1,Del,Tab,F12,F11; all to no avail. I was wondering is there something different to be done running Ubuntu? I know that the BIOS would generally not be affected by the OS. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• What is the advantage to hosting static resources on a separate domain?

  I notice a lot of sites host their resources on a separate domain from the main site, e.g. StackExchange using sstatic.net, Barnes & Noble using imagesbn.com, etc. I understand that there are benefits to putting your static resources on a separate host, possibly with an efficient static-file web server like nginx, freeing up the main server to focus on serving dynamic content. Similarly, outsourcing to a shared CDN like cloudfront Akamai is logical. What is the benefit to using a separate domain otherwise, though? Why sstatic.net instead of static.stackexchange.com? Update: Several answers miss the core question. I understand that there is benefit to splitting between multiple hosts — parallel downloads, slimmer web server, etc. But what is more elusive is why multiple domains. Why sstatic.net rather than static.stackexchange.com as the host for shared resources? So far, only one answer has addressed that.

• Adding 2D vector movement with rotation applied

  I am trying to apply a slight sine wave movement to objects that float around the screen to make them a little more interesting. I would like to apply this to the objects so that they oscillate from side to side, not front to back (so the oscillation does not affect their forward velocity). After reading various threads and tutorials, I have come to the conclusion that I need to create and add vectors, but I simply cannot come up with a solution that works. • Ubuntu One API Java - how to use REST and AccessToken?

  I am writing a java app in eclipse that backups data to several consumer-cloud-services encrypted and redundant. So far, I successfully implemented the authentication process, as it is described in the documentation. At this point, I do not know how to proceed. The next step would be implementing the auth with the stored AccessToken and afterwars implementing upload/download/listing functionality through the REST API. I think I have to store the String oauth.getSerialized(). How do I authenticate with this String afterwards? This does not work e.g.: AuthenticateResponse oauth = api.authenticate(serialized); api.setAuthorizer(new OAuthAuthorizer(oauth)); Can someone tell me please, how I can use the REST API with java? There is no explanation or link in the developers area as far as I saw. And btw, I wasted at least one hour trying to fix errors, because some needed libraries are listet after the example code. :/

• boxes adding up to 100% of the browser [closed]

  I want to have 2 boxes right next to each other, one with a fixed width, and another with a width that will change based on the size of the browser. The box has overflow:auto, and I'm trying to get the first box to act as a side bar that will follow you down the page. But of course I can't seem to achieve this, and have come here hoping someone could give me some examples, or point me in the right direction. Thanks!

• How do you forcibly unmount a disk when you press the eject button on an optical drive?

  When upgrading my hardware, I also upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10. On my previous system (with 10.04 and earlier) when I ejected a disk from the optical drive, the subfolder in the /media directory was automatically removed. In my new 10.10 system, if I don't eject the disk using the "eject" command within the system, the disk remains mounted, even after a new disk is installed. The new drive is a Blu Ray drive, but I haven't noticed any other problems from it. Normally, this isn't a problem, but it makes installing applications that are spread over multiple CDs more difficult in many cases (i.e. Wine). Any advice?

• How do we provide valid time estimates during Sprint Planning without doing "too much" design?

  My team is getting up to speed with Scrum, but most of us are more familiar with non-agile or "pseudo-"agile methodologies. The part that is the biggest hurdle for us is running an efficient Sprint Planning meeting where we break our backlog items into tasks, and estimate hours. (I'm using the terminology from the VS2010 Scrum Template; apologies if I use the wrong word somewhere.) When we try to figure out how long a task is going to take, we often fall into the trap of designing the feature at the code level -- table layout, interfaces, etc -- in order to figure out how long that's going to take. I'm pretty sure this is not the appropriate place to be doing that kind of design. We should be scheduling tasks for these design meetings during the sprint. However, we are having trouble figuring out how else to come up with meaningful estimates for the tasks. Are there any practical habits/techniques/etc. for making a judgement call about how long a feature is going to take, without knowing how you plan to implement it? If our time estimates are going to change significantly once the design has been completed, how can we properly budget our Sprint backlog ahead of time? EDIT: Just to clarify, since some of the comments/answers are very valid but I think addressing the wrong question. We know that what we're doing is not right, and that we should be building time into the sprint for this design. Conceptually all of the developers understand that. We also also bringing in a team member with Scrum experience to keep us on track if we start going off into the weeds. The problem is that, without going through this design process, we are finding it difficult to provide concrete time estimates for anything. We are constantly saying things like "well if we design it this way it might take 8 hours but if we end up having to do this other way instead that will take about 32 but it might not be as bad once we start trying to write it...". I also assume that this process will get better once we have some historical velocity to work from, but many of the technologies and architectural patterns we are using are new to us. But if potentially-wildly-wrong estimates are just a natural part of adapting this process then we will just need to recondition ourselves to accept that :)

• Can I use Wubi install on Windows 7 FDE?

  I have a windows machine using Truecrypt 7.1a FDE. I would like to use wubi to install Ubuntu within windows. Will doing this cause any issues with my system booting up? From what I understand Wubi does not modify any bootloaders. All it does is modify some boot settings within windows. So in theory the Truecrypt custom bootloader will remain the same, and after I get through the truecrypt prompt, have the option of windows or Ubuntu right?

Organizations are striving to provide mediums for sharing knowledge and improving awareness across their enterprise. Indirectly, the socialization of your enterprise should lead to cost savings and improved product/service quality. However, many times the direct effects of connecting an organization’s leadership with its employees are overlooked. Oracle WebCenter Portal can help you bridge that gap by gathering implicit and explicit feedback. Implicit Feedback Through Usage Analytics Analytics allows administrators to track and analyze WebCenter Portal traffic and usage. Analytics provides the following basic functionality: Usage Tracking Metrics: Analytics collects and reports metrics of common WebCenter Portal functions, including community and portlet traffic.   I can't figure out how to perform matrix rotation using Quaternion while taking into account pivot position in OpenGL.What I am currently getting is rotation of the object around some point in the space and not a local pivot which is what I want. • Finding a job: feedback on my current prodicument and my relentless efforts [closed]

  I am a very well rounded IT guy, with a passion for programming in particular. I have been through a BS program less the internship as I refuse to go lower than minimum wage (i.e. free) and/or such opportunities find the institution lacking. Since then, the catalog for my degree has changed, so I am making peace without it. I go up for job interviews and get myself no farther than a submitted resume. I have even changed my strategy and made this website: http://goo.gl/qqpN8 to showcase my highlights (but not at all exhaustive) for specific areas in the US and paid for classified ads. The 'internship' is notable as I am just trying to get my foot in the door. Because IT is so vast, with programming and engineering in particular, I spend my time researching the requirements for the job I am applying for. This has made me that well rounded guy I spoke of earlier, but has made me a victim of being a jack-of-all-trades; unfortunately being a master of none. I embrace my gung-ho attitude and find it to be a trait that has powered my career before. But I am starting to lose steam. I want it straight. What is not appealing about everything I am doing? What are the technologies that I need to focus on that are in great demand at the moment?

Yes, in the actual code the getLocation() method has a slightly more specific name which better describes exactly which location it gets. service.setLocation(this.configuration.getLocation().toString()); In this case, service is an instance variable of a known type, declared within the method. this.configuration comes from being passed in to the class constructor, and is an instance of a class implementing a specific interface (which mandates a public getLocation() method). Hence, the return type of the expression this.configuration.getLocation() is known; specifically in this case, it is a java.net.URL, whereas service.setLocation() wants a String. Since the two types String and URL are not directly compatible, some sort of conversion is required to fit the square peg in the round hole. However, according to the Law of Demeter as cited in Clean Code, a method f in class C should only call methods on C, objects created by or passed as arguments to f, and objects held in instance variables of C. Anything beyond that (the final toString() in my particular case above, unless you consider a temporary object created as a result of the method invocation itself, in which case the whole Law seems to be moot) is disallowed. Is there a valid reasoning why a call like the above, given the constraints listed, should be discouraged or even disallowed? Or am I just being overly nitpicky? If I were to implement a method URLToString() which simply calls toString() on a URL object (such as that returned by getLocation()) passed to it as a parameter, and returns the result, I could wrap the getLocation() call in it to achieve exactly the same result; effectively, I would just move the conversion one step outward. Would that somehow make it acceptable? (It seems to me, intuitively, that it should not make any difference either way, since all that does is move things around a little. However, going by the letter of the Law of Demeter as cited, it would be acceptable, since I would then be operating directly on a parameter to a function.) Would it make any difference if this was about something slightly more exotic than calling toString() on a standard type? When answering, do keep in mind that altering the behavior or API of the type that the service variable is of is not practical. Also, for the sake of argument, let's say that altering the return type of getLocation() is also impractical.

• Issues with LVM partition size in Server 13.04

  I am new to ubuntu and a little confused about how hard drive partitions and LVM works. I remember setting up Ubuntu server 13.04 and telling to to use 1TB of a 3TB server. Well I have maxed that out with blu-ray rips and want the rest of the drive for space. • Can not enter password for sudo [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: add repository to ubuntu from terminal with pgp key 3 answers I have used Ubuntu for several years, and I can not enter password for sudo, and this is when i wanna add a key to public.gpg for itunes10 it dos not work, and the password normal works wite sudo but not in the terminal when i enter: sudo wget -q "http:// deb.playonlinux.com/public.gpg" -o- | sudo apt-get add - and it says this 'sorry try again', and i just had installed itunes10, and have to add a key whit wget to public.gpg, and i tried to enter in the terminal: sudo apt-get update and the password works fine but not whit using sudo wget, and can some one please help.

• What did I do wrong when buying my domain through Google Apps?

  Several times in the past I've bought a domain through Google Apps, and every year Google automatically renews the domain for $10. Somehow when I did this today, I ended up additionally being signed up for an annual Google Apps for Business plan at $12/license/yr. I don't need this; I'm only one user. I'd like to cancel this $12/yr Google Apps plan without cancelling the automatical $10/yr domain renewal. However, there is no "cancel" or "downgrade" link, apparently (according to the help docs) because I have an annual pre-paid account. If I choose not to auto-renew my annual account, it also declines auto-renewal of my domain. How can I make this domain just like my others -- auto-renewed at $10/yr, with a free Google Apps account in front of it?

• If you tried to use Ubuntu then went back to your old OS, why did you do so?

  Over the past few years I've been dipping in and out of Ubuntu every so often because I believe in the idea. However, there have always been factors that have made me give up and return to either Windows or OS X, intending to come back when Ubuntu has had a bit more time to 'bake'. Anecdotally, if you have had similar experiences, why did you go back? If we can address these sorts of issues, maybe Ubuntu can get over this hump. I mean 'chasm'.

• XNA on the TechNet Wiki

  Many months ago I came across an interesting Microsoft website, the TechNet Wiki, when I was looking for information about something that I can’t even remember anymore. I noticed at the time that its section on gaming technologies was sparse and even exchanged a few emails with one of the friendly Microsoft employees who contributes there regularly about some ideas I had for the site. I seem to recall mentioning my intentions to add some articles on XNA when I found the time but between one thing and another it seemed like I was busy from the end of last Summer straight through ‘til now. Yesterday I came across the TechNet Wiki link in my miscellaneous links collection and remembered my intentions many months ago. I decided that adding XNA pages to it would make a nice project to work on while taking breaks from my other projects. So I wrote my first two articles for it: XNA Framework Overview and Content Pipeline Overview. I hope to add more in the coming days and weeks. I’d be delighted if some of my fellow XNA enthusiasts out there joined in, time permitting. Anyone else who’d like to add a page or two on a topic area you’re familiar with, this seems like a great opportunity to contribute to the community and help build a nice knowledge base to benefit all of us who are always interested in learning something new!

• Need help with ColdFusion and ASP.NET site [closed]

  To begin, I wasn't too sure how to title this.. I've got a few questions. First off, I've got a very big site that's in ColdFusion and we've been migrating to ASP.NET C# 4.0 the last 8 months. I've got a team of 7 programmers and no one can seem to figure out these answers, not even our senior C# programmer. We're using Team Foundation Server and we can't figure out how to only push up one small change at time. Right now we're stuck to publishing the entire site and it's causing serious issues. We've currently got the site as a Project and not a Website. We're wondering if that's one issue. I actually think it might be a problem. We're also dealing with an issue where we can't access our regular folders with relative paths. So we're first developing our admin side in .NET and We've got our regular site and then we've got another site within that for our .NET admin tools. By site, I'm referring to them actually being Sites in IIS. This also creates a problem for us when we're creating tools that upload images and want to store them and access them from our parent Site. I'd very much appreciate any advice on how to go about this in the most standardized way. So what I'm hoping for is advise on: -Publishing and managing a site/project in Team Foundation Server. Being able to push up one fix at a time if needed would be GREAT! -Any help figuring out the issuing referencing folders from my .NET child site to my parent ColdFusion site using regular relative paths. "/a/images/b/" would be nice nice instead of only being able to do "/b/images/" We're using ColdFusion 8, C# Asp.NET 4.0/Entity Framework/POCO Templates, and a Windows 2008 R2 Server.
