  • How to learn Haskell

    For a few days I've tried to wrap my head around the functional programming paradigm in Haskell. I've done this by reading tutorials and watching screencasts, but nothing really seems to stick. Now, in learning various imperative/OO languages (like C, Java, PHP), excercises have been a good way for me to go. But since I don't really know what Haskell is capable of and because there are many new concepts to utilize, I haven't known where to start. So, how did you learn Haskell? What made you really "break the ice"? Also, any good ideas for beginning excercises?

    I have a loop that creates mc from a database for (var i:Number = 0; i < t.length; i++) { var portfolioItem:PortfolioItem = new PortfolioItem(); addChild(portfolioItem); portfolioItem.name = t[i][0]; portfolioItem.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, getThisName); } public function getThisName(evt:Event) { trace(evt.target.name); } I try and assign t[i][0] which is the table id to the name attribute but I jsut get 'instance4' or instance 14. How can I give these dynamically create mc's a name or custom property? ideally I would like to use a custom property called portfolio.id but would use the name property or another default property if it works.

    I'm frustrated to discover that Java lacks an acceptable solution for creating programs that will run via double-click. Other than .NET for Windows, what modern and high-level programming languages can I write code in that can be compiled for various platforms and run as a native/binary in each (Windows, Linux, OSX (optional)) Assuming I wanted to write code in python, for instance, is there a cohesive way that I could distribute my software which wouldn't require users to do anything special to get it to run? I want to write and distribute software for computer-illiterate and Java has turned out to be a real pain in this respect.

  • Eclipse And Linux: Keyboard unusable after gnome-screen-saver

    Hi, I know this is not programming related. But I can't find any topics on Google or UbuntuForums. So the problem is: When gnome-screensaver starts on the moment Eclipse has the focus and I wake up again my laptop, Eclipse doesn't listen to keyboard-events. To solve this I have to change the focus to another program and then back to Eclipse. Than it works again. This isn't a real problem, but it would be nice if someone can solve it. Thanks

  • How to change object positions in an android layout?

    Hi, I'm currently working on a very simple aplication, and I intended to make it change the visual aspect depending on the screen size. The application just has 6 buttons like this: http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/e1efb4c4d0.jpg I'm using the AbsoluteLayout, and changing the x and y of the buttons with the methods offsetLeftAndRight and offsetTopAndBottom. I'm not changing the layout of the buttons in the xml file, so the all start in the same place. However, if I use this methods inside the onClickMethod they sometimes appear where I want them, sometimes don't (can't figure out why), but if i use them in the onCreate method, nothing happens. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks

    An array of integers A[i] (i 1) is defined in the following way: an element A[k] ( k 1) is the smallest number greater than A[k-1] such that the sum of its digits is equal to the sum of the digits of the number 4* A[k-1] . You need to write a program that calculates the N th number in this array based on the given first element A[1] . INPUT: In one line of standard input there are two numbers seperated with a single space: A[1] (1 <= A[1] <= 100) and N (1 <= N <= 10000). OUTPUT: The standard output should only contain a single integer A[N] , the Nth number of the defined sequence. Input: 7 4 Output: 79 Explanation: Elements of the array are as follows: 7, 19, 49, 79... and the 4th element is solution. I tried solving this by coding a separate function that for a given number A[k] calculates the sum of it's digits and finds the smallest number greater than A[k-1] as it says in the problem, but with no success. The first testing failed because of a memory limit, the second testing failed because of a time limit, and now i don't have any possible idea how to solve this. One friend suggested recursion, but i don't know how to set that. Anyone who can help me in any way please write, also suggest some ideas about using recursion/DP for solving this problem. Thanks.

The comments are stored in a different table from the stories. The code above does not return any values and doesn't show any errors. Could someone please help?

    If there's one thing I've learned from programming is that there are clever solutions to problems, and then there are "clever" solutions to problems. One is an intelligent solution to a difficult problem that results in improved efficiency and a better way to to do something and the other will wind up on The Daily WTF, and result in headaches and pain for anyone else involved. My question is how do you distinguish between one and the other? How do you figure out if you've over thought the solution? How do you stop yourself from throwing away truly clever solutions, thinking they were "clever"?

Here's a snippet: struct sockaddr_storage client_addr; ... client_addr_size = sizeof(client_addr); client_socket = accept( server_socket, (struct sockaddr *)&client_addr, &client_addr_size ); ... result = inet_ntop( AF_INET, &((struct sockaddr_in *)&client_addr)->sin_addr, client_addr_str, sizeof(client_addr_str) ); Whenever the client connects the address I get is 0.0.0.0 regardless from the host. Can anybody explain, what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

  • Learning how to program real things.

    How would you guys recommend I actually learn to program real things? I mean, I know how to do basic academic things. I can implement a templated stack/queue/map/etc. data structure in C++ or Java or whatever. I can make a text-based hangman game or whatever. Etc etc. But how can I learn to program something real, something useful? I've done project Euler up to question 100 or so, and I feel like that's given me more mathematical maturity but not programming maturity. Should I buy a book and follow exercises, struggle through interesting projects, etc, ? In short, how did you guys transition from academic exercises to real, fun and/or useful programs?

    I am learning functional programming style. From this link http://channel9.msdn.com/shows/Going+Deep/Brian-Beckman-Dont-fear-the-Monads/, Brian Beckman gave a brilliant introduction about Monad. He mentioned that Monad is about composition of functions so as to address complexity. A Monad includes a unit function that transfers type T to an amplified type M(T); and a Bind function that, given function from T to M(U), transforms type M(T) to another type M(U). (U can be T, but is not necessarily). In my understanding, the language implementing monad should be type-checked statically. Otherwise, type errors cannot be found during compilation and "Complexity" is not controlled. Is my understanding correct?

    suppose i have a dll with 2 functions.name of dll="dll1" f1(int a, int b, int c); f2(int a); my program would take the funtion name ,the dll name and a "list" of parameters as input. how would i call the appropriate function with its appropriate parameters. i.e, if input is dll1 f1 list(5,8,9) this would require me to call f1 with 3 parameters if input was dll1 f2 list(8) it would require me to call f2 with one parameter how would i call the function without knowing the number of parameters in advance. further clarification: how do I write code that will call any function with all its arguments by building the argument list dynamically using some other source of information

On click, the button submits data to a php file and then changes text and blurs according to the response from php file. The blur function and change text function in col5 is working well. But the change text function in button got really buggy. The button text should change accordingly. the text of button "Activate" should change to "Inactivate" and the text of button "Inactivate" should change to "Activate" on click / successful submission.. This is not working..     I'm no newbie to programming, but I'm making the move to a career in web development, and I've noticed that so many job postings have different combinations of skill requirements: (PHP, C#, XML, XHTML/CSS, ASP, .NET, jQuery, YUI, Joomla, Ruby, Perl, Python, Java, Javascript... the list goes on.) As of now, I've started learning XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, and mySQL, but with so many combinations, I want to plan ahead to have a marketable combination of skills as early on as possible. Am I on the right path? What is vital for a marketable web programmer's arsenal? Thanks for your thoughts.

  • Assembly Load and loading the "sub-modules" dependencies - "cannot fild the file specified"

However the answers they received I cannot understand, so here goes: Similar questions: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1874277/dynamically-load-assembly-and-manually-force-path-to-get-referenced-assemblies ; http://stackoverflow.com/questions/22012/loading-assemblies-and-its-dependencies-closed The question in short: I need to figure out how dependencies, ie References in my modules can be loaded dynamically. Right now I am getting "The system cannot find the file specified" on Assemblies referenced in my so called modules. I cannot really get how to use the AssemblyResolve event... The longer version I have one application, MODULECONTROLLER, that loads separate modules. These "separate modules" are located in well-known subdirectories, like appBinDir\Modules\Module1 appBinDir\Modules\Module2 Each directory contains all the DLLs that exists in the bin-directory of those projects after a build. So the MODULECONTROLLER loads all the DLLs contained in those folders using this code: byte[] bytes = File.ReadAllBytes(dllFileFullPath); Assembly assembly = null; assembly = Assembly.Load(bytes); I am, as you can see, loading the byte[]-array (so I dont lock the DLL-files). Now, in for example MODULE1, I have a static reference called MyGreatXmlProtocol. The MyGreatXmlProtocol.dll then also exists in the directory appBinDir\Modules\Module1 and is loaded using the above code When code in the MODULE1 tries to use this MyGreatXmlProtocol, I get: Could not load file or assembly 'MyGreatXmlProtocol, Version=1.0.3797.26527, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. So, in a post (like this one) they say that To my understanding reflection will load the main assembly and then search the GAC for the referenced assemblies, if it cannot find it there, you can then incorparate an assemblyResolve event: First; is it really needed to use the AssemblyResolve-event to make this work? Shouldnt my different MODULEs themself load their DLLs, as they are statically referenced? Second; if AssemblyResolve is the way to go - how do I use it?   • How long is too long for a script to execute?

    What is the max time do you think is acceptable for a web script (PHP for example) to execute before it starts to become an annoyance for the user (on average)? I always thought that if the user has to wait more than 1 second for the page to load (this of course after images and css have been cached..this rule really only applies for subsequent requests) they would start to get annoyed.

    Hello all, I'm writing a simple scripting language on top of Java/JVM, where you can also embed Java code using the {} brackets. The problem is, how do I parse this in the grammar? I have two options: 1] Allow everything to be in it, such as: [a-z|a-Z|0-9|_|$], and go on 2] Get an extra java grammar and use that grammar to parse that small code (is it actually possible and efficient?) Since option 2] is basically a double-check since when evaluating java code it's also being checked.   • PHP Included files writing their own content from Importer values ...

    Hello, I have a index.php file that will include several external files: "content/templates/id1/template.php" "content/templates/id2/template.php" "content/templates/id3/template.php" etc. All these files are loaded dynamically into index.php (it reads all folders inside "templates" directory and then includes every "template.php" file). I want to make "template.php" to have the same code in all the "id1,id2,id3" folders, BUT to load values from index.php depending in which folder it stays.. How can I do that? Thank You!
