  I just read the Professional C# 4 and .NET 4 from wrox, wrote by Christian Nagel, Bill Evjen, Jay Glynn, Karli Watson and Morgan Skinner. This is a complete book in whats in .NET 4 as well as a great book for anybody jumping in .NET. They did a great job including all the important parts of .NET as well as the new version 4. As I was reading, my first impression was how far .NET has gone since version 1.0, the different platforms including WPF, Silverlight, ASP.NET ADO.NET, LINQ and PLINQ now...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • When to mark a user story as done in scrum?

  There is a notion in scrum that emphasizes delivery of workable units at the end of each sprint. Each workable unit also maps directly of indirectly to a user story and when in new sprint PO introduces new PBI (new user stories), this means that practically team can't always go back to previous user stories to do the rest of the job, which in turn means that when you implement a user story, you should do it as complete as it's known to the team in that time, and you shouldn't forget anything (something like "I'm sorry, I've forgotten to implement validation for that input control" or "I didn't know that cross-browser check is part of the user story"). At the other hand, test, backward compatibility, acceptance criteria, deployment and more and more concepts come after each user story. So, when can team members know that the user story is done completely, not just for demo, and start a new one?

• Add binding to fish that not auto executes the string?

  How do i set up a key binding in fish, so that fish understands not to execute the bindingstring after appending it to commandline but just appending it as string to commandline. I want to set up a binding that appends | less by pressing i.e. ALT + Y. It seems that by default fish understands the command to automatically execute. I.e. When i type ls on commandline and then would press ALT + Y it only should complete the command to look like this ls | less but still not executing it. i'm trying something like this bind \ey " \| less" But fish doesn't accept my syntax

• How to unhide an application?

  I hope you can help me. I have installed ubuntu 12.04 using wubi, my issue is i installed iptux using ubuntu software center, it worked fine, i decided that i wanted it to be hidden at start up, so i changed its setting in preferences. i assumed that if i needed to use it i could go to internet menu and select it. But after restarting i found that after i click on iptux under Internet nothing happens, but i click it after that then a small window shows Fatal Error!! Failed to bind the TCP/UDP port(2425)! Address already in use. I have tried uninstalling using ubuntu software center and reinstalling it but it still had the same problem. I thought it maybe because some files were not uninstalled by USC, so i installed synaptic and uninstalled iptux (complete uninstallation) and then reinstalled it and the same situation occurs. I was hoping someone could inform me how i could unhide iptux. Thank You

• Weather Indicator

  I recently replaced the indicators in the gnome panel with the Indicator Applet Complete, as can be seen in the screenshot below. However I really miss the weather which used to be displayed with the date gnome applet. I tried searching for an alternative weather indicator and found one here. However its ppa is empty and no longer works. Is there any other alternative? I prefer it being an indicator rather than a ordinary gnome applet as I already know that there is one that can be added to the gnome panel (screenshot below for more info)

• JavaOne and Oracle Open World Community Run - Monday, Oct 1, 6:17am PT

  Following the tradition from last year, inviting all JavaOne and Oracle Open World attendees to run with me in one of the 10 best cities to run in the US. The running route will start at Ferry Plaza on Embarcadero, go through Fisherman's Wharf, straight up Hyde St, couple of loops around Crooked Street and then back the same route to end at Ferry Plaza. Here is the complete clickable map: The Hyde Street (~300ft in 0.75 miles) and Lombard (~200 ft in 0.15 mile) are challenging elevations and you may cover them once only. Alternatively you may take a simpler route out-and-back by running further up to Marina and Crissy Field. When ? • A Method for Reducing Contention and Overhead in Worker Queues for Multithreaded Java Applications

  A java.net article, rich in practical resources, by IBM India Labs’ Sathiskumar Palaniappan, Kavitha Varadarajan, and Jayashree Viswanathan, explores the challenge of writing code in a way that that effectively makes use of the resources of modern multicore processors and multiprocessor servers.As the article states: “Many server applications, such as Web servers, application servers, database servers, file servers, and mail servers, maintain worker queues and thread pools to handle large numbers of short tasks that arrive from remote sources. In general, a ‘worker queue’ holds all the short tasks that need to be executed, and the threads in the thread pool retrieve the tasks from the worker queue and complete the tasks. Since multiple threads act on the worker queue, adding tasks to and deleting tasks from the worker queue needs to be synchronized, which introduces contention in the worker queue.” The article goes on to explain ways that developers can reduce contention by maintaining one queue per thread. It also demonstrates a work-stealing technique that helps in effectively utilizing the CPU in multicore systems. Read the rest of the article here.

Thing is, I need some advices on this since I never made one, I have the game almost complete, but when, i.e, I upload the game to a website I get a white screen for a few seconds, and then I see the game. • How can I relaunch juju daemons without stop/starting local LXC VMs

  I'm using juju in local mode with LXC. I updated juju on the host with a classical: apt-get install juju And had a plentyful of python errors in juju debug-log probably because juju processes weren't restarted. In order to restart juju processes, I had to do a complete: juju destroy-environment juju bootstrap which deleted all contents in /var/lib/lxc. I was warned, and this was not an issue, but will be when I'll be in a production environment. Is there a way to relaunch juju daemons without stop/starting LXC local VMs ?

• Improve your Application Performance with .NET Framework 4.0

  Nice Article on CodeGuru. This processors we use today are quite different from those of just a few years ago, as most processors today provide multiple cores and/or multiple threads. With multiple cores and/or threads we need to change how we tackle problems in code. Yes we can still continue to write code to perform an action in a top down fashion to complete a task. This apprach will continue to work; however, you are not taking advantage of the extra processing power available. The best way to take advantage of the extra cores prior to .NET Framework 4.0 was to create threads and/or utilize the ThreadPool. For many developers utilizing Threads or the ThreadPool can be a little daunting. The .NET 4.0 Framework drastically simplified the process of utilizing the extra processing power through the Task Parallel Library (TPL). • New Windows Phone 7 Stencil For Cacoo

  I have created a stencil for wire framing Windows Phone 7 application in Cacoo.  This is definitely a work in progress, but until it is complete I would suggest combining this stencil with the Android stencil that is available by default in Cacoo.  Below are a couple of screen shots of the stencil so far. • When should I make the first commit to source control?

  I'm never sure when a project is far enough along to first commit to source control. I tend to put off committing until the project is 'framework-complete' and primarily commit features from then on. (I haven't done any personal projects large enough to have a core framework too big for this.) I have a feeling this isn't best practice, though I'm not sure what all could go wrong. Let's say, for example, I have a project which consists of a single code file. It will take about 10 lines of boilerplate code, and 100 lines to get the project working with extremely basic functionality (1 or 2 features). Should I first check in: The empty file? The boilerplate code? The first features? At some other point? Also, what are the reasons to check in at a specific point?

• What's New In 11.1.2.1 (Talleyrand SP1)

  This release is primarily about bug fixes and that's what we spent the most time on, but we also addressed a number of other things: 1. Performance improvements We've done a lot of work to improve the performance of page load and execution times. For example, the View Compare page is about half the size it was previously! We've also done a lot of work on the server to improve performance of queries, exports, action scripts, etc. We implemented some finer-grained locking so fewer operations will block other users while they are in progress. We made some optimizations to improve performance when you have a lot of network or database latency as well. Just a few examples: An Import that previously took 8 GB of memory and hours to complete now runs in about 30 minutes and never takes more than 1 GB of RAM. Searching by exact Node Name now completes within 2 seconds even for a hierarchy with millions of nodes. Another search that was taking 30 seconds to run now completes in less than 5 seconds. 2. Upgrade support This release supports automatic upgrade from previous releases, built right into the console. 3. Console Improvements The Console has been reorganized and made easier to use. It is also much more multi-threaded so it responds quicker without freezing up when you save changes or when it needs to get status. 4. Property Namespaces Properties now have a concept called a Namespace. This is tied into the Application Templates to prevent conflicts with duplicate property names. Right now, if you have an AccountType and you pull in the HFM template, it also has AccountType so you end up creating properties with decorations on the name like "Account Type (HFM)". This is no longer necessary. In addition, properties within a namespace must have unique labels but they can be duplicated across namespaces. So in the Property Grid when you click on the HFM category, you just see "AccountType". When you click on MyCategory, you see "AccountType", but they are different properties with different values. Within formulas, the names are still unique (eg: Custom.AccountType vs HFM.AccountType). I'll write more about this one later. 5. Single Sign On DRM now supports Single Sign-On via HSS. For example, if you are using Oracle's OAM as your SSO solution then you configure HSS to use OAM just like you would before. You also configure DRM to use HSS, again just like before. Then you configure OAM to protect the DRM web app, like you would any other website. However once you do those things, users are no longer prompted to enter their username/password. They simply get redirected to OAM if they don't already have a login token, otherwise they pick their application and sail right into DRM. You can also avoid having to pick an application (see the next item) 6. URL-based navigation You can now specify the application you want to log into via the URL. Combined with SSO and your Intranet, it becomes easy to provide links on our intranet portal that take users directly into a specific DRM application. We also support specifying the Version, Hierarchy, and Node. Again, this can be used on your internal portal, but the scenarios get even more interesting when you are using workflow like Oracle BPEL you can automatically generate links within emails that will take users directly to a specific node in the UI. 7. Job status and cancellation A lot of the jobs now report their status and support true cancellation. Action Scripts also report a progress complete percentage since the amount of work is known ahead of time. 8. Action Script Options Action scripts support Option declarations at the top of the file so a script can self-describe (when specified in the file, the corresponding item in the file is ignored). For example: Option|DetectDelimiter Option|UsePropertyNames|true This will tell DRM to automatically detect the delimiter (a pipe symbol in this case) and that all references to properties are by Name, not by Label. Note that when you load a script in the UI, if you use Labels we automatically try to match them up if they are unique. Any duplicates are indicated and you are presented with a choice to pick which property you actually referred to. This is somewhat similar to Version substitution, but tailored for properties. There are other more minor changes and like I said earlier a lot of bug fixes and performance improvements. Hopefully I will get a chance to dig into some of these things in future blog posts.

• Completely uninstall/reinstall Eclipse and add support for php and jquery

  I have been using Eclipse a short while and it worked perfectly until I started downloading different plugins that I didn't really need. Now I get a ton of different errors and can't even open a php file. What I want to do is just to remove Eclipse and reinstall it, but that was much harder that I first thought. I marked every eclipse package in synaptic packaged manager and selected complete removal, I even deleted the .meta folder in my working dictionary, but when I installed eclipse again. It was as if I hadn't removed anything. Same errors from the plug-ins I had installed before. Seems like when you install something in linux, files are stored all over the place. Makes real hard do remove anything. So how do I COMPLETELY remove Eclipse, reinstall it and add support for php and jquery. Thanks.

Moments ago, the Exchange engineering team signed off on the Release to Manufacturing (RTM) build. This milestone means the coding and testing phase of the project is complete and we are now focused on releasing the new Exchange via multiple distribution channels to our business customers. General availability is planned for the first quarter of 2013. We have a number of programs that provide business customers with early access so they can begin testing, piloting and adopting Exchange within their organizations: We will begin rolling out new capabilities to Office 365 Enterprise customers in our next service updates, starting in November through general availability. Volume Licensing customers with Software Assurance will be able to download Exchange Server 2013 through the Volume Licensing Service Center by mid-November. • Visual Studio &amp; TFS 11 &ndash; List of extensions and upgrades

  This post is a list of the extensions I recommend for use with Visual Studio 11. It’s coming up all the time – what to install, where are the download sites, last version, etc etc, and thus I thought it better to post it here and keep it updated. The basics are Visual Studio 11 connected to a Team Foundation Server 11. Note that we now are at Beta time, and that also many live in a side-by-side environment with Visual Studio 2010.  The side-by-side is supported by VS 11. However, if you installed a component supporting VS11 before you installed VS11, then you need to reinstall it.  The VSIX installer will understand that it is to apply those only for VS11, and will not touch – nor remove – the same for VS2010. A good example here is the Power Commands. The list is more or less in priority order. The focus is to get a setup which can be used for a complete coding experience for the whole ALM process. The list of course reflects what I use for my work , so it is by no means complete, and for some of the tools there are equally useful alternatives. Many components have not yet arrived with VS11 support.  I will add them as they arrive.  The components directly associated with Visual Studio from Microsoft should be common, see the Microsoft column. If you still need the VS2010 extensions, here they are: The extensions for VS 2010.   Components ready for VS 11, both upgrades and new ones Product Notes Latest Version License Applicable to Microsoft TFS Power Tools Beta 111 Side-by-side with TFS 2010 should work, but remove the Shell Extension from the TFS 2010 power tool first.
