• Event Driven Communication in Game Engine - Yes or No?

  As I am reading book Game Coding Complete (http://www.amazon.com/Game-Coding-Complete-Third-McShaffry/dp/1584506806/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295978774&sr=8-1), the author recommend Event Driven communication among the all game objects and modules. Basicaly, all the living game actors and object should communicate with the key modules (Physics, AI, Game Logic, Game View, etc..) via internal event messaging system. This would mean designing efficient event manager as well. My question is, whether this is proven and recommended approach. If it is not properly designed, it might mean consuming a lot of CPU cycles, which can be used elsewhere. This is especially true, if the game is targetted for mobile platform. What is your opinion and recommendation, please?

• What tools should I consider if my strategy is to make a game available to as many platforms as possible?

  We're planning on developing a 2D, grid-based puzzle game, and although it's still very early in the planning stages, we'd like to make our decisions well from the beginning. Our strategy will be to make the game available to as many platforms as possible, for example PCs (Windows, Mac and/or Linux), mobile phones (iPhone and/or Android based phones), game consoles (XBLA and/or PSN) PC will have an emphasis, but I believe that's the most flexible platform so that shouldn't be a problem. So, what programming language, game engine, frameworks and all around tools would be best suited for our goal? P.S.: I'm betting a set of tools won't cover ALL of them, and that there will still be some kind of "translating" effort for some platforms, but we'd like to know what the most far reaching are.

• Not able to suspend or hibernate

  My Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop Lenovo T400 is not able to suspend or hibernate. Whenever I click Suspend or Hibernate, the moon LED on the bottom of the lid flashes a few seconds, the screen quickly shows something like "some devices fail to suspend, error 5", and then the moon LED goes off and the display still has ambient light illumination. I suppose in suspend or hibernation state, the display should have no illumination, just like when the laptop is turned off, right? If I press any key, the unlock screen dialogue will pop out. I searched a little on the internet, and installed 'acpi-support' according to some advice but it does not help. Any suggestions to solve this problem? Thanks and regards!   I have seen a post about the main menu options here: UI: Main Menu options for mobile games. What options should be listed? What do users want to see? But I want to know what kind of options should/need to be available on the settings screen. I am making a rather simple 2D game for Android, but really I haven't found many aspects that warrant an options button or a check box besides turning the sound and music on/off. I was thinking graphics settings but then again, how many apps really need graphics settings besides immersive 3D ones?

• Low complexity shader to indicate the sides of a polyline

  I have a bunch of polylines that I draw using GL_LINES. They can have thousands of points. They actually represent the separation of land and water on a map. I don't have complete polygons, just the ordered set of points. I'm looking for a neat but efficient way to visually convey Side A and Side B as being different. For example I could offset the polyline in one direction a few times and fade it out (but every offset is doubling the number of points), or offset it once to make a "ribbon" and give one side a 'glow' like effect to mimic the outer glow or shadow of a polygon). This is for a mobile application and I'm using OpenGL ES 2. I'd like to keep the effect as simple as possible from a complexity stand point. I'm looking for some additional ideas; maybe there's a clever shader technique out there or a visual effect I haven't considered.

  In response to my HTML5 apps argument a few people came back to how the payment thingy is missing from my idea, and how it will (apparently) be worthless because of that. I’ve been thinking about that a lot in the past few days, and I’m increasingly of the opinion that the payment argument is nonsense.Sure, everybody who does iPhone apps, or who’s glancing cursorily at the mobile market without trying to gain in-depth knowledge, currently believes that the App Store concept is going to be a huge...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Why does wifi hotspot doesn't work correctly?

  I have created the wifi hotspot. In windows, it used to display wifi signal on my nokia C3 but after creating wifi hotspot from ubuntu, I am facing certain problem. Nokia C3 doesn't even gets wifi signal. But wifi signal appears in my samsung mobile GTS3-850 and I can access wifi if I put wifi security option to "none" On the other hand, if I create password then Nomatters, if I type right password or not, it doesn't connect to that wifi. Note : I use Wimax to access internet.

• YouTube: How to Style an AngularJS App on the Device

  I installed the Droid@Screen plugin into NetBeans IDE 8 so that you can see the Android device that I held in my hand while doing the demo below. The demo shows the usage of the Terminal window to create an Ionic Framework application (from "tabs", which is one of the cool templates that the framework provides), i.e., that means I can use AngularJS to create a Cordova application out of the box, with many mobile-oriented components available out of the box. Then I deploy the app to the Chrome browser on Android, which means I can interact with it in NetBeans, e.g., for CSS styling and JavaScript debugging. In this demo, I show how the background color of the deployed app can be changed live from NetBeans. After that, once I'm happy with the styling, I deploy the app again, but this time as a Cordova app, i.e., a hybrid HTML5 application, which means the app is packaged as a native app and deployed directly to the device from NetBeans. • Problems connecting to eduroam wifi - ubuntu touch

  I am trying to connect to our university's eduroam wi-fi network with my Nexus 4 running Ubuntu touch (utopic latest build), but can't get past the first stage. I wonder if anyone can help please? I am following these instructions (which worked for my iPhone): http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/itsupport/mobile/eduroam/ But when I go to the bandit.st-andrews.ac.uk/connect page then follow the link to 'eduroam setup' I get the error message: Authorization Required This server could not verify that you are authorised to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required. Apache/2.2.16 (Debian) Server at bandit.st-andrews.ac.uk Port 443 (Clearly it's the latter option (browser) as I haven't been asked for my credentials yet.) Is there a way round this, or am I just not going to be able to connect until further down the Ubuntu touch development road... Thanks!

  I have over 6 years of software development experience. I have worked on multiple platforms, including mobile. However, I have not had a chance of working on scale-related issues. As a consequence, whenever someone asks a question involving a million inputs in an interview, I find myself out of depth. How do I prepare for such questions? Any books/resources to refer to? There are books for Java and Data Structures and Concurrency, but I don't know about any definitive ones to learn about scaling.
