I have been asked to help out with administering a windows server 2008 R2 server however, I'm trying to work out what version it has installed so I can work out if I need to upgrade it or not.
Is there a simple way to work out what version is installed?
Is there a way to manage a Hyper-V cluster that runs on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter from a Windows 8.1 Pro workstation?
I've downloaded and installed the Remote Server Admin Tools for 8.1 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=39296), but when I enable the Hyper-V manager, it tells me that I can't manage Hyper-V servers on 2K8 or 2K8R2.
Related, the Failover Cluster Manager barfs with a similar error.
How do I manage my old servers with my new workstation?
Windows server 2012 installed on a ISCI LUN. Problem noticed after first reboot. Windows boots only if setup DVD is present(i have to ignore "press any key to boot from DVD" prompt). to present the login Screen and everything looks great from here. But the server wont boot without the help of setup DVD. Can any one help me understand what would be the problem?
Dell Workstation T3600
Intel Pro NIC (Capable of ISCI Boot and also enabled)
I am retiring my old Windows Server 2003 Standard 32bit machine to a new machine with Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard.
The two sticking points are migrating user accounts (and there are a lot of them) and IIS settings/websites (again, there are a lot).
The new machine has not been provisioned yet. I'm at that point where I'm about install the OS on it.
The old machibe is configured with a mirrored set for its OS and data partitions. I have broken the mirror set, replicated all of the data to an external drive, and then rebuilt the mirror set. In short, I have an image of the old machine to play with while safely leaving it up and running.
Thanks!
I have to perform various task such as restarting process, monitor process state check disk space, log monitoring on Window server 2003 machine. For this i am using remote desktop access which is very slow. Is there any alternate (Tool or Framework) for windows server where i can execute my script on my machine and the required task will be performed on the remote machine in somewhat interactive manner (like putty in linux)
I've built a multi threaded messaging application in C and I'm currently using a MySQL Memory table to save the session ID, but I'm not sure whether this was a good decision or not.
It works like this, the application sends a message and saves the source session ID in the MySQL table. When the application gets the success response it will remove the session's ID from the MySQL table, or if it received an error response then it will keep the ID to be retried later.
I've built it this way so that I don't need to care about building a data structure by myself, and the Database provides flexibility when it comes to querying it.
Do you think this is appropriate or do I need to use something else? Please note that the application is expecting to handle a large number of transactions/sec.
Corporate has asked us to look for an FTP server solution with paid support. Our team has a preference for open source, and would normally support it ourselves. But the guys at the top want that secure feeling of paying someone to CYA. Soooooo....what kind of options are out there for FTP server that supports FTP, FTPS, SFTP, plus has a web-based front end so people could transfer files that way...that also has the option of paid support?
Any recommendations?
We have two Windows 2008 domain controllers. We installed the second DC only a few months ago. We also have a TFS 2012 server on the network.
Today, when the older DC crashed, TFS stopped working completely. Local users received messages such as "You are not authorized to access ServerName\Collection". Remote users received messages such as "The server was used in your last session, but it might be offline or unreachable".
So my question is, why did TFS not use the second, newer DC instead of just crashing along with the first DC?
My Server Specs:
- Centos 4.8 32 bit
- Cpanel / WHM
- suPHP enabled on PHP 5.3x
- MySQL 5x
I need someone to please show me various ways to trace what is causing server load spikes.
Sometimes I see so many "nobody" users running httpd processes, but I dont' know how to determine what user(s) it might be, even though suPHP is enabled.

I am a .net programmer trying to create this setup:
I want this server to be inaccessible through DMZ accept for IPSEC connections, and to also have a private network which will be accessible through another windows 2008 server which will host vpn.
That is how our windows 2003 infrastructure works and I am trying to do the same with 2008 servers, are there any guides or documentations that have this scenario?
So i am working on my member server right now and everytime I am adding accounts in security tab of a folder, I am asked for login name and password from the Domain Controller. How do select so I dont need to do this everytime? I am watching this video guide and the man there never need to fill in credentials on his member server.
I have a Windows 2003 Server running IIS (due to an ASP Site needing to be hosted).
I wanted to add some non ASP sites (HTML, PHP and MySQL) so I was thinking I could just run apache on 8080.
What confuses me a bit is if someone hits DomiainA.com, IIS intercepts it and forwards it to DomainA.com:8080 where apache is running. I could do this by putting a server side javascript re-direct in the IIS www-root for the domain.
What else can I do that might be more proper?
I have never built a server before, so I need some suggestions.
What should I consider when choosing hardware for a web server?
I have a budget of 10k.
I have a windows server 2008 with exchange database full backup. Now for testing purpose i want to restore that full server to a VM. I have copied the whole backup to VM01 and took it to Private Network. And now i want to take backup from VM01 and restore it to VM02. Both are at private network. I am in serious trouble and I am seeking professional advices here.
We are using MSSQL server 2008. We removed primary key, replaced exiting data with new data resulted losing our critical business data in its child tables on MSSQL Server. It was completely human mistake and we didn't have disk failure.
1) The last backup file was a month ago which means it is useless.
2) We created Maintenance Plans to backup our database at 12AM everyday but those files are nohwere to be found
3) A friend of mine said we can recover from Transaction Logs. When I go to TaskRestore Transaction log is dimmed/disabled.
4) I checked ManagementMaintenance Plans. I can't find any restored point there. It seems that our maintenance plan hasn't been working.
Is there any third party tool to recover lost/overwritten data from MSSQL table? Thanks a lot.

One of my older motherboards broke and I'm planning to use the remaining power supply, hard drive and case to build a backup server. I want to buy a new motherboard and CPU that can be used 24x7 and wont break down in a few months.
So the question is, do you have any recommendations on any reliable motherboards and CPU for a backup server? Processing power is not a huge issue.
I am very new in server management thing. I want to make email accounts like [email protected].
I know something to do with Sendmail thing , but dunno what ?
I am on Ubuntu 10 server.
When I leave my server idle for about 10 minutes the network will stop responding to outside connections. If I get on the server and attempt to use the network(ping google for example) there will be a delay for a few seconds and then it works. After this incoming connections work again until I leave it idle again. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?
I have got a windows server 2003 with partitioned Hard drive 10Go and 80Go, and i want to improve the storage capacity as the little partition 10Go is almost full.
So i have got choice between partition the hard drive to equal parts, or set up a new hard drive with better storage capacity.knowing that the server has to be on service as soon as possible.
Which one may be the better solution that takes less time and less risks?
On my server with Windows 2003 Server after a fault in the RAM, I can ping to all IPs but I cannot see it at My Network Places. Could you help me if there is any Windows components to be reinstalled, or any registry entries to be redefined. Or is there any other solution?
Thanks
