• how to speed up the code??

  in my program i have a method which requires about 4 files to be open each time it is called,as i require to take some data.all this data from the file i have been storing in list for manupalation. I approximatily need to call this method about 10,000 times.which is making my program very slow? any method for handling this files in a better ways and is storing the whole data in list time consuming what is better alternatives for list? I can give some code,but my previous question was closed as that only confused everyone as it is a part of big program and need to be explained completely to understand,so i am not giving any code,please suggest ways thinking this as a general question... thanks in advance

  Hello, I know that it may sound a silly question but i am really very confused. I am to work with one application that is having operations like PDF loading,annotation, scrolling,zooming and other such functions. Now my question is that i am little bit confused about what template i should use as i went through Quartz 2D Programming Guide and was little bit confused whether i'll be able to apply the above shown functions with the same guideline,as it displays the pdf page on the whole screen. Or is there any other way around? Please help me..Can i use UIWebView for the same functions as i listed above? I ll be grateful if you can help me. Thank you.

• jQuery programming style?

  I was recently asked to fix something on a site which I haven't worked on before. I haven't really worked with jQuery that much, but I figured I'd take a look and see if I could fix it. I've managed to mostly clear up the problem, but I'm still horrified at the way they chose to build this site. On document load, they replace the click() method of every anchor tag and form element with the same massive function. When clicked, that function then checks if the tag has one of a few different attributes (non-standard attributes, even), and does a variety of different tasks depending on what attributes exist and what their values are. Some hyperlinks have an attribute on them called 'ajaxrel', which makes the click() function look for another (hidden) hyperlink with an ID specified by the ajaxrel attribute, and then calls the click() function for that other hyperlink (which was also modified by this same click() function). On the server side, all the php files are quite long and have absolutely no indentation. This whole site has been a nightmare to debug. Is this standard jQuery practice? This navigation scheme seems terrible. Does anyone else actually use jQuery this way? I'd like to start incorporating it into my projects, but looking at this site is giving me a serious headache.   hello overflow. I asked this question on the pv3d forum and not a single person could, or cared to answer it. Im relatively new to 3d so i apologize if this is common sense to some. I have a sphere , in which i am applying a CellMaterial to. Looks great. I noticed that in the papervision sdk , there is also a CellShader. Should I be using this in congruence with the CellMaterial ? Should it be one or the other ? Is shader , a deprecated practice to Shader Material ? My initial thoughts were that the shader applies to the whole scene , while materials can be applied uniquely to objects. The documentation seems to show otherwise. What benefit if any could be gained by using both a CellShader and a CellMaterial ? id really love to get some ambient inclusion in there some how.

  I guess this is a math question and not a programming question, but what is a good way to create a formula that has diminishing returns? Here are some example points on how I want the curve to look like. f(1) = 1 f(1.5)= .98 f(2) = .95 f(2.5) = .9 f(3) = .8 f(4) = .7 f(5) = .6 f(10) = .5 f(20) = .25 Notice that as the input gets higher, the percentage decreases rapidly. Is there any way to model a function that has a very smooth and accurate curve that says this? Another way to say it is by using a real example. You know in Diablo II they have Magic Find? There are diminishing returns for magic find. If you get 100%, the real magic find is still 100%. But the more get, your actual magic find goes down. It just cares that count is greater than 1. Question: How can I change this to return just 1 or 0. 1 when count is 0 and 0 when count 1. Will it be faster to do this rather than returning the whole count?

  I'm looking for a way to efficiently insert bits into a bitstream and have it 'overflow', padding with 0's. So for example if you had a byte array with 2 bytes: 231 and 109 (11100111 01101101), and did BitInsert(byteArray,4,00) it would insert two bits at bit offset 4 making 11100001 11011011 01000000 (225,219,24). It would be ok even the method only allowed 1 bit insertions e.g. BitInsert(byteArray,4,true) or BitInsert(byteArray,4,false). I have one method of doing it, but it has to walk the stream with a bitmask bit by bit, so I'm wondering if there's a simpler approach... Answers in assembly or a C derivative would be appreciated.

  I took a look at the "Beginner's Guide to LINQ" post here on StackOverflow (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8050/beginners-guide-to-linq), but had a follow-up question: We're about to ramp up a new project where nearly all of our database op's will be fairly simple data retrievals (there's another segment of the project which already writes the data). Most of our other projects up to this point make use of stored procedures for such things. However, I'd like to leverage LINQ-to-SQL if it makes more sense. So, the question is this: For simple data retrievals, which approach is better, LINQ-to-SQL or stored procs? Any specific pro's or con's? Thanks.

  This question is an updated version of a previous question I have asked on here. I am new to client-server model with SQL Server as the relational database. I have read that public access to SQL Server is not secure. If direct access to the database is not a good practice, then what kind of layer should be placed between the server and the client? Note that I have a desktop application that will serve as the client and a remote SQL Server database that will provide data to the client. The client will input their username and password in order to see their data. I have heard of terms like VPN, ISA, TMG, Terminal Services, proxy server, and so on. I need a fast and secure n-tier architecture. P.S. I have heard of web services in front of the database. Can I use WCF to retrieve, update, insert data? Would it be a good approach in terms of security and performance?

• Benefit of outputting JSON as opposed to plain HTML

  Hey guys, Just wondering which is best here. I want to output data from a table in my DB then put a lot of this data into a html table on the fly on my page. Im working with Java on the server side. Basically I pull the results form the DB and have the raw data..just what next? There is a chance I may want to take data from multiple tables in order to combine it into one table for my site. I retrieve the results of the query from the DB, now do i create a text from it in the form of json which i can parse as json using jquery upon the return of the object to my browser?(kind of a sub question of this question: Is just using a stringbuilder the correct way to make a json object to output?) Or.. Should i build the HTML as a string and output that to the browser instead? Which is better and why? Thanks in advance!

• Safely convert UTC datetimes to local time (based on TZ) for calculations?

  Following from my last question which @Jon Skeet gave me a lot of help with (thanks again!) I am now wondering how I can safely work with date/times, stored as UTC, when they are converted back to Local Date/Time. As Jon indicated in my last question using DateTimeOffset represents an instant in time and there is no way to predict what the local time would be say a minute later. I need to be able to do calculations based on these date/times. So how can I assure when I pull the dates from the database, convert them to local date/time and do specific calculations on them they are going to be accurate?

Is there any advantage to using using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(conStr)) { using (SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand()) { // dostuff } } instead of using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(conStr)) { SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand(); // dostuff } Obviously it does matter run more than one command with the same connection, since closing an SqlDataReader is more efficient than closing and reopening a connection (calling conn.Close();conn.Open(); will also free up the connection). I see many people insist that failure to close the DataReader means leaving open connection resources around, but doesn't that only apply if you don't close the connection?

• libXcodeDebuggerSupport.dylib is missing in iOS 4.2.1 development SDK

  Note: creating a symbolic link to use the 4.2 lib seems to work fine -- maybe cd /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport/4.2.1\ \(8C148\)/Symbols/ sudo ln -s ../../4.2 (8C134)/Symbols/Developer Request: See end of this question! After upgrading from 4.2.0 (beta, I believe) to 4.2.1, the libXcodeDebuggerSupport.dylib file is missing, which results in: warning: Unable to read symbols for /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport/4.2.1 (8C148)/Symbols/Developer/usr/lib/libXcodeDebuggerSupport.dylib (file not found). which I guess isn't good. Looking at the directory in question I note: .../DeviceSupport/4.2 (8C134)/Symbols/Developer/usr/lib/libXcodeDebuggerSupport.dylib but .../DeviceSupport/4.2.1 (8C148)/Symbols/System/ .../DeviceSupport/4.2.1 (8C148)/Symbols/usr/ the above two dirs make up all the content in the 4.2.1 folder. No "Developer" folder. Checking the /usr/ dir there, I find no libXcodeDebuggerSupport.dylib file in the lib dir either, so ln -s'ing isn't an option. Worth mentioning: after the upgrade, I plugged the iPad in and had to click "Use for development" in Xcode organizer. Doing so, I got a message about symbols missing for that version, and Xcode proceeded to generate such, then failed. I restored the iPad and did "Use for development" again, and nothing about missing symbols appeared... Update: deletion of /Developer and reinstallation of Xcode from scratch does not fix this issue. Update 2: I just realized that after the reinstall of Xcode, .../DeviceSupport/4.2 (8C134)/Symbols is now a symbolic link, lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 36 Dec 3 17:17 Symbols -> ../../Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS4.2.sdk And the directory in question has the appropriate files. Maybe this is simply a matter of linking the 4.2.1 dir in the same fashion? I'll try that and see if Xcode freaks out. If someone who has this file could provide a md5 sum that would be splendid. However in internet explorer(9) it breaks. the gray header background is supposed to be pushed up to the right of the logo block, and the buttons are supposed to be in the dark grey area.
