• Wired internet speed is slow in Ubuntu 12.04

  I have dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell N4110 laptop. I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my existing windows 7 hard drive. I am experiencing very slow internet speed on Ubuntu(wired connection). But on Windows,internet is really fast. I disabled ipv6 by editing /etc/sysctl.conf No avail. Then i run the following command. sudo ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full autoneg off No benefit. I am having "Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller [10ec:8136] (rev 05)" network card.

• Monitor not detected - low resolution only

  I just installed Ubuntu 11.1 on my desktop pc. It was a clean install, no upgrading. I have a Samsung Syncmaster BX2450 connected to the PC. My problem is that I cannot make Ubuntu recognize my monitor - which is capable of more than 1024. I ran a shut down of lightdm, and ran sudo X -configure, but it gave me a "configuration failed". Nothing seems to work - any ideas? • Ubuntu 12.04, can't find my home wifi network

  I've tried several solutions I found on the web, but didn't manage to solve a problem. Since today my laptop won't find my WiFi network, but neighbours' networks are suggested. Another laptop with U12.04 does find one. What do I do? • Broadcom 4365 wireless driver with 3.4 / 3.5 kernel

  I used this package to install the driver on 3.2 Kernel and it was working perfectly. Unfortunately the system used to freeze randomly with 3.2 kernel so I installed 3.4 kernel, now there is no freezing, the only problem is that my wifi card is not working, I tried to re-install the package, but didn't work. I can see the driver in the "additional drivers" and it say that it is active, but when I execute iwconfig it doesn't show up. I've even tried ndiswraper and that didn't work either. my lspci: 01:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation Device 4365 (rev 01)

• Can I use Ubuntu Server to replace our Windows environment?

  I have recently been put in charge of a network overhaul for our company. I have done plenty with Ubuntu in school but it has been a few years. I would like to replace our current servers with Ubuntu, although I am unaware if it will work. Our current environment runs a Domain, Exchange, and VPN. I know there are solutions capable for this. I guess my man worry is will windows 7 and windows XP be able to use Ubuntu as a Domain Controller? If anyone has had success with this I would love some input. I have a meeting in a couple months that I am suppose to explain our plan. Thank you.

• Cuda GeForce GT 555m (on Ubuntu 12.04 (Virtual Box))

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 in a Virtual Box as guest OS. Today I have tried to enable all functions of my graphic card under Ubuntu. But all my efforts were off the mark... because my experience with Linux is relatively small... I have tried the procedure which is described as in http://sn0v.wordpress.com/2012/05/11/installing-cuda-on-ubuntu-12-04/. Running the cuda-filepack always lead to an error like "installing driver canceled". Then I have tried to install the Bumblebee project. But I always get the error that the bumblebee daemon is not started. After some internet research I found a test-command lspci -nn | grep '[030[02]]' which results in 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: InnoTek ... [80ee:beef] I've been trying to activate the card you for hours without success. Could you please give me some hints how to activate CUDA? Kind regards

• Should I put an app I wrote on my résumé even if it has low ratings?

  Last summer I wrote an iPhone app for the Toronto Film Festival. The development was pretty rushed, and the design goals were changed multiple times. In particular, the central film list view controller was redesigned three times in the week before launch. I forgot to update one of my functions to match the changed design, and the app shipped with a serious bug. While the app was fairly popular, this bug crippled the app and it got a lot of poor reviews. I fixed the bug as soon as I got a crash report, but it got stuck in the iTunes review process for the duration of the film festival. Should I put this app on my résumé? The app has poor ratings and most of the reviews mention crashes, but it's also the only work experience I have. Additionally, how should I approach this topic in an interview? • Dell wireless not working after upgrade

  So, the short version of my sad story is that I tried upgrade Ubuntu to 12.04 and wireless driver has stopped working. I have tried all the solutions but nothing seem to be working. When I try to install my wireless from "Additional Drivers" Its says: Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log The lspci command gives me the following info about wireless: 0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01) I have tried removing bcm drivers and reinstalling, but nothing seems to be working. rfkill is good too.

• What user-friendly term should I use for a view that lives under a tab in a tab bar app?

  My app uses a tab bar controller. In the user documentation, I'm not sure what name to use for a view that lives under a tab. For example, the app has a Settings tab. In the user documentation, I have a sentence that goes something like this: This threshold can be adjusted in the Settings tab. "Settings tab" is not terribly user-friendly. What would be a better term than "tab"? I've looked though Apple's Human Interface Guideline, but I can't find what would be the official user-friendly term for "view that lives under a tab".

• Periodic clicking sound from PC speaker

  After an update some months ago, my laptop has begun making a low, repeated clicking sound every few seconds. It is not being generated through the regular sound system, as altering the volume and even muting the sound does not make any difference. My regular audio works fine, by the way, so I am guessing this is some sort of PC speaker, since I cannot hear the click when I listen through regular headphones. Strangely, when I open the sound settings dialog the click magically disappears. I don't need to change any settings; if I simply leave the dialog open in the background then the problem disappears. Any ideas what this could be? • How can I determine which GPU card is running at PCI Express 2.0 x16 & which is using x8?

  Is there a way to determine the speed of the PCI Express connection to a specific card? I have three cards plugged in: two Nvidia GTX 480's (one at x16 & and one at x8) one Nvidia GTX 460 running at x8 Is there some way, either by a function call in C or an option to lspci that I can determine the bus speed of the graphics cards? When I only use one of the cards for my CUDA program, I'd like to use the one which is running at x16. Thanks! Note: lspci -vvv dumps out For the two GTX 480s. • sound stopped working after upgrade to 11.10 on Tuesday 20th March

  My sound card stopped working after a set of updates were installed 2 days ago. • Is it better to define all routes in the Global.asax than to define separately in the areas?

  I am working on a MVC 4 project that will serve as an API layer of a larger application. The developers that came before me set up separate Areas to separate different API requests (i.e Search, Customers, Products, and so forth). I am noticing that each Area has separate Area registration classes that define routes for that area. However, the routes defined are not area-specific (i.e. {controller}/{action}/{id} might be defined redundantly in a couple of areas). My instinct would be to move all of these route definitions to a common place like the Global.asax to avoid redundancy and collisions, but I am not sure if I am correct about that.

• Loud and annoying noise on login

  I have a PC with Kubuntu 13.10 64-bit on it. The problem is that whenever I log in (automatic log in is enabled), there is a loud double-click noise that sounds from the speakers whether the volume is muted or not. I have two sound cards; the motherboard audio, which is disabled in the BIOS, and the Creative! Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi SB0460, which I have normal speakers plugged into. Does anyone know how to fix this? Relative lspci lines: 00:01.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. • Structure of a correctly implemented JTable with TableModel and Listeners?

  I am pretty new to Java and its JTables and this is where I am struggling at the moment. I need to create a GUI which shows me results of a sql query like SELECT * FROM tblPeople WHERE name='Doe'. My idea was to create a a JFrame which displays a JTable with all found records. Besides this, I need to also implement some code to handle when a user is double clicking a record or selecting it by using his arrow keys (additional feature: pressing 12(e.g.) should select the 12th record). What is the best way to structure my program (what classes do I need and especially where do I store my logic)? I came up with structuring it the following way: Main.java ("view") SQLConnection.java PeopleTableModel.java (only stores and returns data given by the passed ResultSet, "model" inherits from DefaultTableModel) PeopleTable.java (stores basically all my logic including KeyListener and MouseListener, "controller", inherits from JTable) Are there better ways to achieve my goals? If so, what are they?

• Does Ubuntu support SATA drives in AHCI mode?

  I have a current installation of Ubuntu 13. Will it boot if I switch my SATA controller to AHCI in BIOS? (I installed Ubuntu in IDE mode) I have to wait until I fix my GRUB (Windows ate it), so I thought I'd take a poll here first in case there are any precautions. I ask, because it was a royal PITA to do it in Windows. Will I need to reinstall Ubuntu to enable this? I don't mind doing that since it was just installed and I having nothing on it yet, and I kinda botched the install anyway.

  Imagine that I have this context: A main view containing a table containing some cells. Each one of them with their own controller and view files. In the main view, I have an object "Person", with 3 different IDs. Depending on certain conditions (let say, time of the day), I have to choose one of them and display it in the cell. My question is, should the main view pass the whole object to the table, and this one to the cell, and the cell will calculate the ID that it will be shown? or, The main view calculates this parameter, and send the result to the table and this to the cell? Is a question focused on OO design, which one of this approaches is more suitable in an OO design and why?

• RTOS experience

  Hi, I have been working as an embedded software engineer on mostly 8 bit micro-controller firmware and desktop/mobile applications development for the past five years. My work on a WinCE project (in which I got introduced to .NET CF) was short lived. I did use core APIs for interrupt processing, peripheral communication, etc...but again, not exactly a pure RTOS environment. In order to get together more solid experience for growing more in the embedded field, I want to work more with RTOSes. Will buying an evaluation board with an RTOS and putting together a project at home be regarded as a good experience or will an online course be more useful? I am just not clear as to what will be regarded as good experience. Any suggestions or directions will greatly help me. I have a passion for the field but just a need a point in the right direction. • Configure audio on HP ENVY 4 ultrabook

  I want to configure audio for ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop. Currently the audio just does not play. If i try and plug in headphones then somewhere midway to being fully plugged in the audio plays on the headphones, I plug in further and the sound disappears. How do I get this to work? lspci | grep audio Audio device: Intel Corporation Panther Point High Definition Audio Controller My laptop is one the beats edition HP laptops, and the driver for win7 was an IDT HD audio driver. --EDIT-- The output for cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec is Codec: IDT 92HD91BXX Codec: Intel PantherPoint HDMI I need to get both the IDT card to work and the HDMI card to work with my TV. --EDIT-- --EDIT 2-- I have added blacklist snd-usb-audio to the end of the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf Now the sound plays from my laptop speakers only when I plug in a headphones/external speaker. • Changing DisplayMode seems not to update Input&Graphic Dimension

  I'm writing a small game using Slick and Nifty-GUI. At the program startup I set the DisplayMode using the following lines: AppGameContainer app = new ... app.setDisplayMode( 800, 600, false ); app.start(); I wrote a Nifty-ScreenController for my settings dialog in which the user can select the desired DisplayMode. When I try to set the new DisplayMode within this controller class the game window gets resized correctly but the Graphics and Input objects aren't updated accordingly. Therefore my rendering code just uses a part of the new window. I tried to set different DisplayModes in the main method to test if it's generally possible to invoke this method multiple times. It seems that changing the DisplayMode only works before I call app.start(). Furthermore I tried to update the Graphics & Input object manually but the init and setDimensions methods are package private. :( Does someone know what I'm doing wrong and how to change the DisplayMode correctly?

• Setting up ASP.NET structure for code

  I've always coded in C# MVC3 when developing web applications. But now i wanted to learn a bit more about developing web sites with just ASP.NET. But now i'm wondering what a good setup for my code would be. For me, an MVC like pattern seems to be a good way to go. But obviously ASP.NET doesn't have any router and controller classes. So i guess people have a different way of setting up their code when they do ASP.NET. So i'm looking for more information on how to get started with this. So not really the basics of ASP.NET, but something that focuses on a good code setup. Any good tutorials/information about this/?
