• visual studio 2008 vs 2010 Pro unmanaged code

  Hi, I'm a C++ programmer, I use Visual Studio 2008 Professional, only unmanaged code. I'm thinking of buying VS 2010 Pro. I'm confused, I don't know what are differences between those two. I know that, in plus, it has tr1 included. When I started using 2008 edition I was very pleased to see f.e. unit testing support but all new features are only for managed code. The C++ debugger in 2008 is very good, better than 2003 edition one. I would't like to buy a new tool and discover that I gained nothing and lost some functionality ( because f.e. something was moved to higher version). Once upon a time I switched from very good VS6 to VS 2003.Net and imagine what, after some time I discovered that Pro has no support for code optimalization. It is wonderful how Microsoft makes money. I wouldn't like to experience something like that again. What do you think, what can you recommended?

• Why would javascript click-areas not be working in IE8?

Since the above HTML is generated by a third party control (Janus, http://www.janusys.com/controls), we don't have the source code. has anyone experienced any similar problems with IE8? I've determined that it actually fires the onMouseDownCommand command also the CSS of the button area is different in IE8, it doesn't have color shading that it does in IE7. I can imagine that somewhere the HTML is not valid and IE8 being stricter is not playing along, but where? any advice on how to narrow in on this bug welcome ANSWER: Turned out to be that the application was not checking the navigator.agent for "MSIE 8.0" and was thus treating IE8 has a non-Internet-Explorer browser. Thanks Lazarus for the tip, the IE8 Javascript debugger is very nice, like a Firebug for IE, will be using it more!

• Writing Russian in XML

  Hi, I am writing a Xml Tag Renamer class with Java which reads in a XML, renames the tags and write them back into another XML file using DocumentBuilderFactory and TransformerFactory (text nodes are preserved). It worked fine before with German and English texts, until today, when I tried to rename a XML file with russian text. Instead of the source texts I got ????? in the newly created XML file. I've tried setting Encoding Any idea how to correct this? Thanks! PS. Strings were correct before entering TransformerFactory, as I checked in the debugger. I've tried setting OutputKeys.ENCODING to UTF-8 and ISO-8859-5. None of them helped. • What AOP tools exist for doing aspect-oriented programming at the assembly language level against x8

  Looking for a tool I can use to do aspect-oriented programming at the assembly language level. For experimentation purposes, I would like the code weaver to operate native application level executable and dynamic link libraries. I have already done object-oriented AOP. I know assembly language for x86 and so forth. I would like to be able to do logging and other sorts of things using the familiar before/after/around constructs. I would like to be able to specify certain instructions or sequences/patterns of consecutive instructions as what to do a pointcut on since assembly/machine language is not exactly the most semantically rich computer language on the planet. If debugger and linker symbols are available, naturally, I would like to be able to use them to identify subroutines' entry points , branch/call/jump target addresses, symbolic data addresses, etc. I would like the ability to send notifications out to other diagnostic tools. Thus, support for sending data through connection-oriented sockets and datagrams is highly desirable. So is normal logging to files, UI, etc. This can be done using the action part of an aspect to make a function call, but then there are portability issues so the tool needs to support a flexible, well-abstracted logging/notifying mechanism with a clean, simple yet flexible. The goal is rapid-QA. The idea is to be able to share aspect source code braodly within communties as well as publicly. So, there needs to be a declarative security policy file that users can share. This insures that nothing untoward that is hidden directly or indirectly in an aspect source file slips by the execution manager. The policy file format needs to be simple to read, write, modify, understand, type-in, edit, and generate. Sort of like Java .policy files. Think the exact opposite of anything resembling XML Schema files and you get the idea. Is there such a tool in existence already?

• Uncatchable AccesViolationException

  Hi all, I'm getting close to desperate.. I am developing a field service application for Windows Mobile 6.1 using C# and quite some p/Invoking. (I think I'm referencing about 50 native functions) On normal circumstances this goes without any problem, but when i start stressing the GC i'm getting a nasty 0xC0000005 error witch seems uncatchable. In my test i'm rapidly closing and opening a dialog form (the form did make use of native functions, but for testing i commented these out) and after a while the Windows Mobile error reporter comes around to tell me that there was an fatal error in my application. My code uses a try-catch around the Application.Run(masterForm); and hooks into the CurrentDomain.UnhandledException event, but the application still crashes. Even when i attach the debugger, visual studio just tells me "The remote connection to the device has been lost" when the exception occurs.. Since I didn't succeed to catch the exception in the managed environment, I tried to make sense out of the Error Reporter log file. But this doesn't make any sense, the only consistent this about the error is the application where it occurs in. The thread where the application occurs in is unknown to me, the module where the error occurs differs from time to time (I've seen my application.exe, WS2.dll, netcfagl3_5.dll and mscoree3_5.dll), even the error code is not always the same. (most of the time it's 0xC0000005, but i've also seen an 0X80000002 error, which is a warning accounting the first byte?) I tried debugging through bugtrap, but strangely enough this crashes with the same error code (0xC0000005). I tried to open the kdmp file with visual studio, but i can't seem to make any sense out of this because it only shows me disassembler code when i step into the error (unless i have the right .pbb files, which i don't). Same goes for WinDbg. To make a long story short: I frankly don't have a single clue where to look for this error, and I'm hoping some bright soul on stackoverflow does. I'm happy to provide some code but at this moment I don't know which piece to provide.. Any help is greatly appreciated!

• Optional route parameters in ASP.NET 4 RTM no longer work as before

  I upgraded my project to ASP.NET 4 RTM with ASP.NET MVC 2.0 RTM today. I was previously using ASP.NET 3.5 with ASP.NET MVC 2.0 RTM. Some of my routes don't work suddenly and I don't know why. I'm not sure if something changed between 3.5 and 4.0 - or if this was a regression type issue in the 4.0 RTM. (I never previously tested my app with 4.0). I like to use Url.RouteUrl("route-name", routeParams) to avoid ambiguity when generating URLs. Here's my route definition for a gallery page. I also tested the INCOMING routes with http://haacked.com/archive/2008/03/13/url-routing-debugger.aspx and they all work fine.

• Trying to debug a 'Assertion failure in -[UIActionSheet showInView:]' error....

  I am working through "Beginning iPad Application Development" and am getting hung up in Chapter 3 where I have created a project that works with an Action Sheet. • How do I read the manifest file for a webapp running in apache tomcat?

  I have a webapp which contains a manifest file, in which I write the current version of my application during an ant build task. The manifest file is created correctly, but when I try to read it in during runtime, I get some strange side-effects. My code for reading in the manifest is something like this: InputStream manifestStream = Thread.currentThread() .getContextClassLoader() .getResourceAsStream("META-INFFFF/MANIFEST.MF"); try { Manifest manifest = new Manifest(manifestStream); Attributes attributes = manifest.getMainAttributes(); String impVersion = attributes.getValue("Implementation-Version"); mVersionString = impVersion; } catch(IOException ex) { logger.warn("Error while reading version: " + ex.getMessage()); } When I attach eclipse to tomcat, I see that the above code works, but it seems to get a different manifest file than the one I expected, which I can tell because the ant version and build timestamp are both different. Then, I put "META-INFFFF" in there, and the above code still works! This means that I'm reading some other manifest, not mine. I also tried this.getClass().getClassLoader().getResourceAsStream(...) But the result was the same. What's the proper way to read the manifest file from inside of a webapp running in tomcat? Edit: Thanks for the suggestions so far. Also, I should note that I am running tomcat standalone; I launch it from the command line, and then attach to the running instance in Eclipse's debugger. That shouldn't make a difference, should it?

• Windows Sidebar gadget - cannont access a div in Flyout DOM

When peering into the System.Gadget.Flyout.document object through the debugger, the body parameter is null - I don't think that's right. The System.Gadget.Flyout.file value is being set elsewhere when the gadget first loads. What am I doing wrong? Also, does the System.Gadget.Flyout.show property have to be true before the System.Gadget.Flyout.document property can be accessed? My ultimate goal is to open a flyout and dynamically populate it's html

• JScrollPane Scrolls Down with Long Text in JEditorPane

  Hello, I want to have a JEditorPane inside a JScrollPane. When the user clicks a button, the click listener will create a textEditor, call jscrollpane.setViewPort(textEditor), call textEditor.setText(String) to fill it with editable text, and call jscrollpane.getVerticalScrollBar().setValue(0). In case you're wondering, yes, the setText() must come after the setViewPort() for reasons that aren't on topic. Here is the problem: After the user clicks the button, the JScrollPane's view scrolls all the way to the bottom. I want the scrollbar to be at the top, as per the last line in my click listener. I popped open a debugger, and to my horror, discovered that the jscrollpane's viewport is being forced down to the bottom after the conclusion of the click listener (when pumping filters). It appears that Swing is delaying the population of the editor/jscrollpane until after the conclusion of the clicklistener, but is calling the scrollbar command first. Thus, the undesired behavior. Anyway, I'm wondering if there is a clean solution. It seems that wanting a scrollpane to be scrolled to the top after modification would be a reasonably common requirement, so I'm assuming this is a well-solved problem. Thanks!

• Debugging NSoperation BAD ACCESS within graphics context

  I tried everything to debug this one but I can't get to the bottom of it. This code lives in a subclass of NSOperation which is processed from a queue: (borders is an ivar NSArray containing 5 UIimage objects) NSMutableArray *images = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; for (unsigned i = 0; i < 5; i++) { CGSize size = CGSizeMake(60, 60); UIGraphicsBeginImageContext(size); CGPoint thumbPoint = CGPointMake(6, 6); [controller.image drawAtPoint:thumbPoint]; CGPoint borderPoint = CGPointMake(0, 0); [[borders objectAtIndex:i] drawAtPoint:borderPoint]; [images addObject:UIGraphicsGetImageFromCurrentImageContext()]; UIGraphicsEndImageContext(); } [images release]; The code works fine most of the time but when I push the iphone by access subviews and pressing lots of buttons on the UI I either get this exception which is trapped by the operation: Exception Load view: *** -[NSCFArray insertObject:atIndex:]: attempt to insert nil or I get this: Program received signal: “EXC_BAD_ACCESS”. The exception is caused because UIGraphicsGetImageFromCurrentImageContext() return nil. I don't know how to debug the EXC_BAD_ACCESS but I'm guessing that this error (in fact both of these errors) is caused by low memory. The debugger stops at the line: [controller.image drawAtPoint:thumbPoint]; As I mentioned I've trapped the exception so I can live with that but the EXC_BAD_ACCESS is more serious. IF this is memory related how can I tell and is it possible to increase the memory available to NSOperation?

• Why wouldn't a flex remoteobject be able to work within a custom component?

  Please enlighten this flex noob. I have a remoteobject within my main.mxml. I can call a function on the service from an init() function on my main.mxml, and my java debugger triggers a breakpoint. When I move the remoteobject declaration and function call into a custom component (that is declared within main.mxml), the remote function on java-side no longer gets called, no breakpoints triggered, no errors, silence. How could this be? No spelling errors, or anything like that. • MissingMethodException thrown when calling new form in Compact Framework

  I'm updating an old mobile device application for better flexibility. I had basically added the ability to configure the address of our SQL server in the case that we want to use our test server as opposed to our production server. I don't think this is causing the problem, but I wanted to state it. I also upgraded the project from a VS 2000 project to a VS 2005 project. The issue I am having is that when I try to run the program in the VS emulator for Pocket PC, I get an error. It occurs after our "main menu" form loads and the user selects the next form to load. The form is initialized without issue, but when we try to run the .ShowDialog() method, it throws a System.MissingMethodException. I don't have a lot of experience with the Compact Framework and really have no idea where to start looking for problems. I stepped the debugger through the entire initializing process for the new form and it ran without issue. But, again, when we come to the ShowDialog call, it throws the error. Any ideas in where to start looking or known issues would be greatly appreciated.

• Core-data: when accessing a relationship, the count method on NSSet fails

  I'm trying to access a relationship (one to many) programatically. My Data model contains an NSManagedEntity called language (with a two string attributes) with a relationship to an entity called WordCategory (one-to-many). I use an NSFetchRequest to get all the Language entities. that works fine. I get the valueForKey for the relationship and that works fine. I can work with its objects. However, when I try to send the message count to the NSSet that stores the WordCategory objects I get a In other words, this line works: NSLog(@"word category count %@",[[wordCategory anyObject] valueForKey:@"name"]); This one doesn't: NSLog(@"word category count %@",[wordCategory count] I get a the message: EXC_BAD_ACCESS in the debugger. • jQuery ajax call doesn't seem to do anything at all

  I am having a problem with making an ajax call in jQuery. Having done this a million times, I know I am missing something really silly here. However, I never get an alert back that says success or an alert that says failure. I did go into my CS code and put a breakpoint on the GetEmployee method. The breakpoint did hit, so I know jQuery is successfully calling the method. I stepped through the method and it executed just fine with no errors. I can only assume the error is happening when the jQuery ajax call is returning from the call. Also, I looked in my event logs just to make sure there wasn't an ASPX error occurring. There is no error in the logs. I also looked at the console. There are no script errors. Anyone have any ideas what I am missing here? `

• iPhone programming - problem with CoreFoundation forking

  Hello all, I've been working on an iPhone for several months. It's a 2d shooting game akin to the old Smash TV type games. I'm doing everything alone and it has come out well so far, but now I am getting unpredictable crashes which seem to be related to CoreFoundation forking and not exec()ing, as the message __THE_PROCESS_HAS_FORKED_AND_YOU_CANNOT_USE_THIS_COREFOUNDATION_FUNCTIONA LITY___YOU_MUST_EXEC__ always shows up somewhere in the debugger. Usually it shows up around a CFRunLoopRunSpecific and is related to either a timer firing or _InitializeTouchTapCount. I cannot figure out exactly what is causing the fork to occur. My main game loop is running on a timer, first updating all the logic and then drawing everything with openGL. There is nothing highly complex or unusual. I understand you cannot make CF calls on the childside of a fork, or access shared memory and things like that. I am not explicitly trying to fork anything. My question is: can anyone tell me what type of activity might cause CoreFoundation to randomly fork like this? I'd really like to finish this game and I don't know how to solve this problem. • Interception with Unity in Prism v2 for WPF (not working for me)

  I cannot get interception to work with Prism v2 (Oct 2009). I am trying to intercept the Setter for any Public Properties and then fire the PropertyChanged event if the property has changed. I can see that the code gets executed (by stepping through with the debugger or adding a debug point). However, the WPF Window controls that are bound to these properties do not get updated. If I subscribe to these events and print to the console, I can print out the property change notifications. So, if the View has a textbox, which updates the property on the ViewModel, then the property in the ViewModel gets updated. However, if a button on the view (implemented as a DelegateCommand) causes the property to get updated, then the textbox (TwoWay Binding Mode) that is bound to that Property is not updated even though the event is triggered and the console has printed out the information about which property was updated. Has anyone encountered this issue? Here is the sample WPF Application that I have written. Wordpress doesn't allow uploads of zip files, so I renamed it to have a pdf extension (rename the file to have a zip extension). Please let me know what I am doing wrong. Thanks in advance.

However when I enter step, the debugger gets past the if self.__state != _CS_REQ_STARTED: line without a problem. Why is this happening? If the self.__state doesn't exist python would have to raise an exception as it did when I entered the expression. Python version: 2.6.4 on win32

• thread reaches end but isn't removed

  I create a bunch of threads to do some processing: new Thread("upd-" + id){ @Override public void run(){ try{ doSomething(); } catch (Throwable e){ LOG.error("error", e); } finally{ LOG.debug("thread death"); } } }.start(); I know i should be using a threadPool but i need to understand the following problem before i change it: I'm using eclipse's debugger and looking at the threads in the debug pane which lists active threads. Many of them complete as you would expect, and are removed from the debug pane, however some seem to stay in the list of active threads even though the log shows the "thread death" entry for these. When i attempt to debug these threads, they either do not pause for debugging or show an error dialog: "A timeout occurred while retrieving stack frames for thread: upd-...". there is some synchronization going on within the doSomething() call but i'm fairly sure it's ok and since the "thread death" log is being called i'm assuming these threads aren't deadlocked in that method. i don't do any Thread.join()s, however i do call a third party API but doubt they do either. Can anyone think of another reason these threads are lingering? Thanks.   I'm trying to write an ARM program that will convert an ieee number to a TNS format number. TNS is a format used by some super computers, and is similar to ieee but different. I'm trying to use several masks to place the three different "part" of the ieee number in separate registers so I can move them around accordingly. I think I do not fully understand how the number is being stored in the register or using the masks wrong. Any help appreciated. If you need more info just ask.   I have working code using the spring-ws library to respond to soap requests. I moved this code to a different project (I'm merging projects) and now it is failing. I would like to figure out the reason for the failure. The symptom I get is this: when the HTTP request arrives, spring begins handling the call. Some googling for the error message suggests that the problem is that a PushbackInputStream which is apparently used for reading from the socket is read twice or perhaps has close() called and then is read afterward. It is happening inside of spring-ws, not my code, and since it worked fine before I moved the code to a new project it must have something to do with versions of spring, or something it uses like axis or xerces. But I can't find any differences in versions of these! Has anyone encountered this error before? Or do you have any suggestions of approaches I could take in troubleshooting this?
