• Q&amp;A: Does it make sense to run a personal blog on the Windows Azure Platform?

  I keep seeing people wanting to do this (or something very similar) and then being surprised at how much it might cost them if they went with Windows Azure. Time for a Q&A. Short answer: No, definitely not. Madness, sheer madness. (Hopefully that was clear enough) Longer answer: No because It would cost you a heck of a lot more than just about any other approach to running a blog. A site that can easily be run on a shared hosting solution (as many blogs do today) does not require the rich capabilities of Windows Azure. Capabilities such as simplified deployed and management, dedicated resources, elastic resources, “unlimited” storage etc. It is simply not the type of application the Windows Azure Platform has been designed for. Pex and Moles are also available for academic and non-commercial use." I note with interest that it is now available to MSDN subscribers. If I recall correctly it used to be only available to VS Team versions.

  Worker Role Call Order: WaWorkerHost process is started. Worker Role assembly is loaded and surfed for a class that derives from RoleEntryPoint.  This class is instantiated. RoleEntryPoint.OnStart() is called. RoleEntryPoint.Run() is called.  If the RoleEntryPoint.Run() method exits, the RoleEntryPoint.OnStop() method is called . WaWorkerHost process is stopped. The role will recycle and startup again. Web Role Call Order: WaWebHost process is started. Hostable Web Core is activated. Web role assembly is loaded and RoleEntryPoint.OnStart() is called. • Is IE9 a modern browser?

  At http://people.mozilla.com/~prouget/ie9/ there is a very provocative article entitled "Is IE9 a modern browser?". There is a rebuttal by Tim Sneath at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tims/archive/2011/02/15/a-modern-browser.aspx that is well worth a look. Certainly IE9 is already superior to its predecessors. My comment on the matter is that those that consider IE9 to be non-standards compliant, should submit tests to the W3C to demonstrate the non-compliance. Upon acceptance by the W3C, all the competing browsers can then be re-tested. I prefer objective tests to subjective opinion. I have used IE9 and on some sites such as Hotmail, it is noticeably faster. I have so far been unable to apply the promised IE9 lockout of spyware cookies. With Firefox, I just instal NoScript and never enable spyware sites.

• How to save one role implementing a client/server pattern in Azure?

  Sometimes you need to have an instance performing a server role when other instances are playing the client role. An example can be a file sharing like in this great post: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/mariok/archive/2011/02/11/sharing-folders-in-azure.aspx, one instance shares a folder that all other instances are using to write files that the server processes. The problem is that there is not discovering mechanism in Azure that allows one instance to know where the instance acting as a server is located. A first approach can be having a server role and a client role like in the previous post. This means more instances, more money. A solution to save this "server" role is to use Instance 0, always available, to act as a server. An instance can know that it should act as the server checking RoleEnvironment.CurrentRoleInstance.Id.EndsWith(".0"). Other instances can iterate the RoleEnvironment Instances collection to find the instance whose name ends with ".0", getting its endpoints and acting as its clients.

• Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 7 SP1 released to manufacturers

  SP1 went RTM today which means it will be widely available soon. According  to the Microsoft server division blog, the service pack will be available to Microsoft's TechNet and MSDN subscribers, as well as to Microsoft volume licensing customers, on Feb. 16, 2011.   Please go easy on me. I'm a clutzy dinosaur. I currently have a large, unwieldy website hand-coded in html/css with php includes. It currently has a single WP installation in a subdirectory. The plan is to reorganize, and I want to use WP as the CMS and incorporate 3 WP blogs for 3 subdomains. Ideally, would like to create a WP multisite network to allow for further expansion and to save admin trouble. I just want to confirm that if I install WP in the root directory and create 3 blogs (in subdomains), does this mean my website's home page is the mother blog's index.php? Essentially, I will have created 4 blogs - mother at root and 3 children in subdomains? How to set this up on my Mac (OSX 10.5.8) running MAMP for development? And then how to migrate to server without breaking?
