The only way I found it to put try...catch statements around every single line of code but this will take ages as there is too much code.

  • Validate Linq2Sql before SubmitChanges()

    Can anyone tell me if/how you can validate the changes in a data context in Linq2Sql before calling SubmitChanges(). The situation I have is that I create a context, perform multiple operations and add many inserts alongside other processing tasks and then rollback if the submit fails. What I'd prefer to do is make some kind of "Validate()" call after certain tasks are done so that I can handle it before submitting the entire job.

  • What is best strategy to handle exceptions & errors in Rails?

    Hello. I was wondering if people would share their best practices / strategies on handling exceptions & errors. Now I'm not asking when to throw an exception ( it has been throroughly answered here: SO: When to throw and Exception) . And I'm not using this for my application flow - but there are legitimate exceptions that happen all the time. For example the most popular one would be ActiveRecordNotFound. What would be the best way to handle it? The DRY way? Right now I'm doing a lot of checking within my controller so if Post.find(5) returns Nil - I check for that and throw a flash message. However while this is very granular - it's a bit cumbersome in a sense that I need to check for exceptions like that in every controller, while most of them are essentially the same and have to do with record not found or related records not found - such as either Post.find(5) not found or if you are trying to display comments related to post that doesn't exist, that would throw an exception (something like Post.find(5).comments[0].created_at) I know you can do something like this in ApplicationController and overwrite it later in a particular controller/method to get more granular support, however would that be a proper way to do it? class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base rescue_from ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid do |exception| render :action => (exception.record.new_record? ? :new : :edit) end end

  • Using an ODBC application with a JDBC driver

    My company uses Vertica. We have Python applications that connect to it with pyodbc. I do most of my development on a Mac (Snow Leopard) and unfortunately Vertica has not released ODBC drivers for Mac. They do have JDBC drivers though. I don't think developing in Jython is a good compromise. Is there any way to use JDBC drivers with an ODBC application? Some kind of ODBC connector?

  • Graph limitations - Should I use Decorator?

    I have a functional AdjacencyListGraph class that adheres to a defined interface GraphStructure. In order to layer limitations on this (eg. acyclic, non-null, unique vertex data etc.), I can see two possible routes, each making use of the GraphStructure interface: Create a single class ("ControlledGraph") that has a set of bitflags specifying various possible limitations. Handle all limitations in this class. Update the class if new limitation requirements become apparent. Use the decorator pattern (DI, essentially) to create a separate class implementation for each individual limitation that a client class may wish to use. The benefit here is that we are adhering to the Single Responsibility Principle. I would lean toward the latter, but by Jove!, I hate the decorator Pattern. It is the epitome of clutter, IMO. Truthfully it all depends on how many decorators might be applied in the worst case -- in mine so far, the count is seven (the number of discrete limitations I've recognised at this stage). The other problem with decorator is that I'm going to have to do interface method wrapping in every... single... decorator class. Bah. Which would you go for, if either? Or, if you can suggest some more elegant solution, that would be welcome. EDIT: It occurs to me that using the proposed ControlledGraph class with the strategy pattern may help here... some sort of template method / functors setup, with individual bits applying separate controls in the various graph-canonical interface methods. Or am I losing the plot?

  • Silverlight Cannot find XML data source

    Hello.. I am very new to Silverlight development. I understand that this is client side technology therefore the paradyme is differant from that of conventional ASP.NET development. Having said that, I don't understand where my server side code is deployed. I have a silver light \ MVC application. I am trying to read an XML document from within my 'Models' folder. The following peice of code is executed from within a class that is in the same location as the XML document, 'Models'. The load() results in a SystemIOFileNotFound exception. I noticed that when building the application the XML document is not laid down in the same location as the web project's assembly. I assume this is specific to the fact that this is a Silverlight project.   • MSNP-Sharp Example fails to login, gives SocketException

    I've just downloaded the MSNP-Sharp library with the aim of creating my own messaging client, however I am struggling to get the example to sign in. The code all compiles and runs, but when I provide my login details and select "Login" I almost immediately get the following SocketException: "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 64.4.9.254:1863" I've stepped through the code and it's the messenger.Connect() function that is causing this, somewhat obviously. When I run the example I only change the login and password details. I am running Windows 7 x86 with the latest version of Windows Live Messenger. I have tried disabling my antivirus, even going as far as to temporarily uninstall it in case that was the error. I have also tried disabling Windows Firewall, with no luck.

  • How to interpolate hue values in HSV colour space?

    Hi, I'm trying to interpolate between two colours in HSV colour space to produce a smooth colour gradient. I'm using a linear interpolation, eg: h = (1 - p) * h1 + p * h2 s = (1 - p) * s1 + p * s2 v = (1 - p) * v1 + p * v2 (where p is the percentage, and h1, h2, s1, s2, v1, v2 are the hue, saturation and value components of the two colours) This produces a good result for s and v but not for h. As the hue component is an angle, the calculation needs to work out the shortest distance between h1 and h2 and then do the interpolation in the right direction (either clockwise or anti-clockwise). What formula or algorithm should I use? EDIT: By following Jack's suggestions I modified my JavaScript gradient function and it works well.   • Niewbie OutOfMemory problem

    So I am trying to create a producer/consumer type scala app. The LoopControl just sends a message to the MessageReceiver continoually. The MessageReceiver then delegates work to the MessageCreatorActor (whose work is to check a map for an object, and if not found create one and start it up). Each MessageActor created by this MessageCreatorActor is associated with an Id. Eventually this is where I want to do business logic. But I run out of memory after 15 minutes.   • SQL Server Bulk Insert failing when called from .NET SqlCommand

    I have a stored procedure which does bulk insert on a SQL server 2005 database. When I call this stored procedure from some SQL (passing in the name of a local format file and data file) it works fine. Every time. However, when this same stored procedure gets called from C# .NET 3.5 code using SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery it works intermittently. When it fails a SqlException is generated stating "Cannot bulk load. Invalid column number in the format file "c:\bulkinsert\MyFile.fmt" I don't think this error message is correct. Has anyone experienced similar problems with calling bulk insert from code? Thanks.

    You're working freelance with several small remote clients and you want to have a meeting via webcam. What do you use? Please consider price, video quality, and minimum hassle for the clients. I'd prefer my clients don't have to pay anything or install anything for it to work. I'm already serving VNC in a Java applet, so something like that would be nice. Skype is awesome, and oovoo looks great, but I'd like to have more than one client on the line at once without them having to pay a subscription too.   • How can I get image data from QTKit without color or gamma correction in Snow Leopard?

    Since Snow Leopard, QTKit is now returning color corrected image data from functions like QTMovies frameImageAtTime:withAttributes:error:. Given an uncompressed AVI file, the same image data is displayed with larger pixel values in Snow Leopard vs. Leopard. Currently I'm using frameImageAtTime to get an NSImage, then ask for the tiffRepresentation of that image. After doing this, pixel values are slightly higher in Snow Leopard. For example, a file with the following pixel value in Leopard: [0 180 0] Now has a pixel value like: [0 192 0] Is there any way to ask a QTMovie for video frames that are not color corrected? Should I be asking for a CGImageRef, CIImage, or CVPixelBufferRef instead? Is there a way to disable color correction altogether prior to reading in the video files?   • Can someone suggest a way to learn regex?

    In my situation knowing Regex would be very useful but I can't seem to be able to learn it. I completely don't understand it and I find it quite strange. To me Regex is just a set of jumbled up symbols which 'somehow' does the job. I looked at many tutorials and still haven't figured how to use it. The other thing I find weird that whenever I search for a way to implement something with regex I find lots of different solutions. For example these are for 'matching text between the brackets' 1: \((.*?)\) 2: ((.+?)) That confuses me even more ... Can someone suggest a good way of learning it? Personally I find it even more difficult than assembly language. For now I'm avoiding Regex and using things such as "substr" to get the bits I need.

  • Magento - Integrating Wordpress into Magento for the homepage

    I currently have a Magento store where I'm using a CMS page as the homepage. I want to integrate my wordpress blog (hosted on the same server) into this CMS page. It would show the latest blog post and preferably have the comment function available on the front page. The first thing I considered was using the Wordpress Loop on the Magento CMS page, but it doesn't seem like it allows PHP. One other thought I had was to create the homepage using modules or blocks. To be honest, I've never created a module or block so I'm not all that familiar with what is involved. The CMS page that I had created is simply an image slider/carousel (nivo-slider) and some photos with links. None of the content actually needs to be done with CMS, it just needs to be presented within my Magento theme/framework. All homepage updates will be handled by myself, so I can bypass the CMS system all together and just update modules if it turns out that the modules solution will allow me to have both the Wordpress blog and nivo-slider on the same page. Any thoughts?

  • How can I detect client-side when a page load is the result of an AJAX history point?

    I'm trying to prevent a "flicker" effect that is occurring on my ASP.NET page which occurs when a user navigates to the page via the browser back button after having navigated away from it. The reason for the flicker is that I'm using an Update Panel which has some content in there on the initial page-load. As a result, when the page is loaded via a back button that initial content is shown very briefly before it is updated with the correct History-aware data. In order to overcome this I am intending on having the updatepanel hidden (display: none) on inital page load and then show it as long as we don't have any history to deal with. The problem is that I can't find out what to check to determine if there's any history. I can see that the Sys.Application has a _history member but when I'm checking it on page init it is null each time. Does anyone know what I should be checking to determine if there's history to deal with for a page load client-side? And at what point to do it?

    The new version of SQLite has the ability to enforce Foreign Key constraints, but for the sake of backwards-compatibility, you have to turn it on for each database connection separately! sqlite> PRAGMA foreign_keys = ON; I am using SQLAlchemy -- how can I make sure this always gets turned on? What I have tried is this: engine = sqlalchemy.create_engine('sqlite:///:memory:', echo=True) engine.execute('pragma foreign_keys=on') ...but it is not working!...What am I missing?
