• Is there a way to tell JVM to optimize my code before processing?

  I have a method, which takes much time to execute first time. But after several invocations, it takes about 30 times less time. So, to make my application respond to user interaction faster, I "warm-up" this method (5 times) with some sample data on initialization of application. But this increases app start-up time. I read, that JVM's can optimize and compile my java code to native, thus speeding things up. I wanted to know - maybe there is some way to explicitly tell JVM that I want this method to be compiled on startup of application?

• spring web application context is not loaded from jar file in WEB-INF/lib when running tomcat in eclipse

  I am experimenting with spring, maven, and eclipse but stumbling on a weird issue. I am running Eclipse Helios SR1 with the STS (Spring tools suite) plugin which includes the Maven plugin also. What i want to achieve is a spring mvc webapp which uses an application context loaded from a local application context xml file, but also from other application contexts in jar files dependencies included in WEB-INF/lib. What i'd ultimately like to do is have my persistence layer separated in its own jar file but containing its own spring context files with persistence specific configuration (e.g a jpa entityManagerFactory for example). So to experiment with loading resources from jar dependencies, i created a simple maven project from eclipse, which defines an applicationContext.xml file in src/main/resources Inside, i define a bean <bean id="mybean" class="org.test.MyClass" /> and create the class in the org.test package I run mvn-install from eclipse, which generates me a jar file containing my class and the applicationContext.xml file: testproj.jar |_META-INF |_org |_test |_MyClass.class |_applicationContext.xml I then create a spring mvc project from the Spring template projects provided by STS. I have configured an instance of Tomcat 7.0.8 , and also an instance of springSource tc Server within eclipse. Deploying the newly created project on both servers works without problem. I then add my previous project as a maven dependency of the mvc project. the jar file is correctly added in the Maven Dependencies of the project. In the web.xml that is generated, i now want to load the applicationContext.xml from the jar file as well as the existing one generated for the project. • Several appdomains calling the same unmanged dll

  Our .NET 3.5 C# application creates multiple appdomains. Each appdomain loads the same unmanaged 3rd party dll. This dll reads a configuration file upon initialization. If the configuration changes during runtime, the dll must be unloaded and loaded again. This dll is not in our scope to rewrite correctly. Does each appdomain have access to a separtate copy of this unmanaged dll, or does Windows keep one copy of the dll and maintain a usage count? If the latter is is the case, how do we get each instance of the unmanaged dll to reflect its unique configuration?

• How do I get a bundle reference from inside of a plugin with carbon?

  I'm writing a C++ plugin in Mac OS X using the Carbon framework (yeah, yeah, I know, Apple is deprecating Carbon, but at the moment I can't migrate this code to Cocoa). My plugin gets loaded by a master application, and I need to get a CFBundleRef reference to my plugin so that I can access it's resources. The problem is, when I call CFBundleGetMainBundle() during my plugin's initialization routines, that returns a reference to the host's bundle reference, not the plugin's. How can I get a reference to my plugin's bundle instead? Note: I would rather not use anything determined at compile-time, including calling CFBundleGetBundleWithIdentifier() with a hard-coded string identifier.

Suppose I have two memory segments (equal size each, approximately 1kb in size) , one is read-only (after initialization), and other is read/write. what is the best layout in memory for such segments in terms of memory performance? one allocation, contiguous segments or two allocations (in general not contiguous). my primary architecture is linux Intel 64-bit. my feeling is former (cache friendlier) case is better. is there circumstances, where second layout is preferred?   I'm using a library which for one certain feature involves variables like so: extern const u8 foo[]; extern const u8 bar[]; I am not allowed to rename these variables in any way. However, I like to be able to access these variables through an array (or other similar method) so that I do not need to continually hardcode new instances of these variables into my main code. My first attempt at creating an array is as follows: const u8* pl[] = { &foo, &bar }; This gave me the error cannot convert 'const u8 (*)[]' to 'const u8*' in initialization, and with help elsewhere along with some Googling, I changed my array to this: u8 (*pl)[] = { &foo, &bar }; Upon compiling I now get the error scalar object 'pl' requires one element in initializer. Does anyone have any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

  How do sprites work? I've seen sprites from old school games like Super Mario Brothers, and wondered how they're animated to make a game. They're always presented as one big image map, so how are they used? For Mario (as an example) are there precalculated image co-ordinates that outline mario, and are swapped between various mario sprites to produce animation? Or are sprites pre "cut" during game initialization using precalculated images co-ordinates and stored in memory somewhere? Obviously I know nothing about game development.

• PyQt4: Why does Python crash on close when using QTreeWidgetItem?

  I'm using Python 3.1.1 and PyQt4 (not sure how to get that version number?). Python is crashing whenever I exit my application. I've seen this before as a garbage collection issue, but this time I'm not sure how to correct the problem.   I'm implementing the Euclidian algorithm for finding the GCD (Greatest Common Divisor) of two integers. Two sample implementations are given: Recursive and Iterative. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euclidean_algorithm#Implementations My Question: In school I remember my professors talking about recursive functions like they were all the rage, but I have one doubt. Compared to an iterative version don't recursive algorithms take up more stack space and therefore much more memory? Also, because calling a function requires uses some overhead for initialization, aren't recursive algorithms more slower than their iterative counterpart?

• Spring bean's DESTROY-METHOD attribute [does not work for me]

  Can get work the attribute "destroy-method". First, even if I type non-existing method name into "destroy-method" attribute, Spring initialization completes fine (already strange!). Next, when a bean has a "prototype" scope, then I suppose it must be destroyed before the application is closed. That not happens, it is simply never called in my case. Though, after extracting this bean I can call this method explicitly and it does its job. Could you explain why this method is never called in my Spring 2.5 case? p.s. The method exists, it is public and has no arguments.

• ASP.NET: How to initialize when *user control* is initially loaded

  I have an ASP.NET user control that I'm embedding in another user control. This works fine. I need to know the best logic/method for detecting when the control is loaded. In other words, I have some display initialization logic that needs to run when the control is initially displayed. Surely there is a pattern for this. The typical method is to put (!IsPostBack) logic in the Page_Load method of the control. This works great until you end up with a state when the Parent page has already posted back many times. My user control gets added to the page but its display does not intialize properly. I'm hoping to find a way that keeps this logic inside the control, versus various hacking around in the codebehind of the parent page.

• SoundPool repeating issue for Samsung Galaxy S3

  I'm trying to play a background sound for my application, I use SoundPool class, my problem is that, sound plays well only when I set the loop parameter with zero value, but it doesn't work for any other value. My code for initialization is: soundpool = new SoundPool(4, AudioManager.STREAM_MUSIC, 0); soundsMap = new HashMap<Integer, Integer>(); soundsMap.put(1, soundpool.load(this, R.raw.soundfile_1, 1)); soundsMap.put(2, soundpool.load(this, R.raw.soundfile_2, 1)); my code for playing is soundpool.play(1, 0.9f, 0.9f, 1, -1, 1f); as I mentioned sound works when I put (0) instead of (-1) for the loop value, anyone has any idea why (-1) or any value other than (0) doesn't work (there is no output sound) ?

• Why does GANTracker outputs an error "GANTracker.m" not found?

  Hi, I have used the Google Analytics Tracker in a previous iPhone OS project. Everything was working fine and I copy & pasted the GANTracker Library and the Tracker initialization. When starting my new project it tells me: Xcode could not locate source file: GANTracker.m (line: 177) To tell the truth, I don't know where to start to debug this one. I have included the library using #import "GANTracker.h". The error message occurs right within the application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions and does not seem to have any connection to what is really going on. If I set the breakpoint to [window makeKeyAndVisible]; for example and wait a second, it occurs right after that. That makes it look like there is something in the background going on with the GANTracker. The Tracker itself is created a little later by: [[GANTracker sharedTracker] startTrackerWithAccountID:@"xx" dispatchPeriod:10 delegate:nil]; [[GANTracker sharedTracker] trackPageview:@"pageview" withError:nil]; Thank you all in advance for your help!

• Texture allocations being doubled in iPhone OpenGL ES

  The below couple lines are called 15 times during initialization. The tx-size is reported at 512 everytime, so this will allocate a 1mb image in memory 15 times, for a total of 15mb used.. However, I noticed instruments is reporting a total of 31 allocations! (15*2)+1 glTexImage2D(GL_TEXTURE_2D, 0, GL_RGBA, tx-size, tx-size, 0, GL_RGBA, GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE, spriteData); free(spriteData); Likewise in another area of my program that allocates 6 256x256x4 (256kB) textures.. I see 13 sitting there. (6*2)+1 Anyone know what's going on here? It seems like awful memory management, and I really hope it's my fault. Just to let everyone know, I'm on the simulator.

• "Unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application" running .NET app in virtual XP mac

  I've written a few winform apps in .net 2.0 which won't run in a virtual XP (running from VirtualBox). I get the error "unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application" (.NET Framework Initialization Error). I've tried fixing the installation of .net and also installing v3.5. I think it's probably a security issue rather than a framework problem, but i'm running under an administrator account. Other .net apps (2.0) run ok, so it might be a strong name/signing problem. I've tried compiling them completely unsigned and also delay signing them with a key and turning on verification skipping with the sn tool. help greatly appreciated!

• Java and gstreamer-java initialisation error

  I am building a small app which will play streaming audio from the internet in java (mainly internet radio stations). I have decided to use the gstreamer-java library for the sound, which uses JNA. I would like to include a check in the code, to see whether the gstreamer library has been initialised. When I have left the "Gst.init()" code out (to mimic when the library has not been initialised correctly), the application throws out the following messages: (process:21888): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.22.3/gobject/gtype.c:2458: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function (process:21888): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed The app calls the gstreamer-java library. The error messages appear but the thread continues to run, hogging the CPU. Is there any way to catch the error or to add a check to prevent it from happening? An alternative would be to put the "Gst.init()" in the main class, but I am not sure if this would always guarantee the gstreamer library is initialised.

• How should I handle incomplete packet buffers?

  I am writing a client for a server that typically sends data as strings in 500 or less bytes. However, the data will occasionally exceed that, and a single set of data could contain 200,000 bytes, for all the client knows (on initialization or significant events). However, I would like to not have to have each client running with a 50 MB socket buffer (if it's even possible). Each set of data is delimited by a null \0 character. What kind of structure should I look at for storing partially sent data sets? For example, the server may send ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUV\0WXYZ\0123!\0. I would want to process ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUV, WXYZ, and 123! independently. Also, the server could send ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ1234567890LOL123HAHATHISISREALLYLONG without the terminating character. I would want that data set stored somewhere for later appending and processing. Also, I'm using asynchronous socket methods (BeginSend, EndSend, BeginReceive, EndReceive) if that matters.

• SMS war continues, ideas welcome

  I am trying to make U9 telit modem send SMS messages. I think I handle protocol correctly, at least, I manage to send them, but only under these circumstances: the native application was executed beforehand, and killed by task manager (without giving it a chance to initialize things). It looks like the supplied application is good at doing certain initialization/deinitialization which is critical. I also see the difference between the two states in output of AT+CIND command. When I am trying to do things on my own, it returns zeroes (including signal quality), but when I run the same command after killing the native application, the output looks reasonable. I am out nearly of ideas. I have tried many things, including attempts to spy at modem's COM ports (didn't work). Haven't tried setting windows hooks to see what the application is trying to get thru. Perhaps you have encountered a similar situation?

Only the 10 "official" ones are left. This effectively means TestContext.Properties is read only, for users. Which is not clearly documented in MSDN. Please discuss. --DBJ
