• EPM troubleshooting Utilities

  (in via Maurice) "Are you keeping up-to-date with the latest troubleshooting utilities introduced from EPM 11.1.2.2? These are typically not described in product documentation, so you might miss references to them. The following five utilities may be run from the command line.(1) Deployment Report was introduced with EPM 11.1.2.2 (11 April 2012). It details logical web addresses, web servers, application ports, database connections, user directories, database repositories configured for the EPM system, data directories used by EPM system products, instance directories, FMW homes, deployment distory, et cetera. It also helps to keep you honest about whether you made changes to the system and at what times! Download Shared Services patch 13530721 to get the backported functionality in EPM 11.1.2.1. Run it from /Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/epmsys_registry.sh report deployment (on Unix/Linux)\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\epmsys_registry.bat report deployment (on Microsoft Windows). The output is saved under \Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\diagnostics\reports\deployment_report.html (2) Log Analysis has received more "press". It was released with EPM 11.1.2.3 and helps the user to slice and dice EPM logs. It has many parameters which are documented when run without parameters, when run with the -h parameter, or in the 'Readme' file. It has also been released as a standalone utility for EPM 11.1.2.3 and earlier versions. (Sign in to  My Oracle Support, click the 'Patches & Updates' tab, enter the patch number 17425397, and click the Search button. Download the appropriate platform-specific zip file, unzip, and read the 'Readme' file. Note that you must provide a proper value to a JAVA_HOME environment variable [pointer to the mother directory of the Java /bin subdirectory] in the loganalysis.bat | .sh file and use the -d parameter when running standalone.) Run it from /Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/loganalysis.sh -h (on Unix/Linux)\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\loganalysis.bat -h (on Microsoft Windows). The output is saved under the \Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\diagnostics\reports\ subdirectory. (3) The Registry Cleanup command may be used (without fear!) to clean up various corruptions which can  affect the Hyperion (database-based) Repository. Run it from /Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/registry-cleanup.sh (on Unix/Linux)\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\registry-cleanup.bat (on Microsoft Windows). The actions are described on the command line. (4) The Remove Instance Command is only used if there are two or more instances configured on one computer and one of those should be deleted. Run it from /Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/remove-instance.sh (on Unix/Linux)\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\remove-instance.bat (on Microsoft Windows). (5) The Reset Configuration Tool was introduced with EPM 11.1.2.2. It nullifies Shared Services Hyperion Registry settings so that a service may be reconfigured. You may locate the values to substitute for <product> or <task> by scanning registry.html (generated by running epmsys_registry.bat | .sh). Find productNAME in INSTANCE_TASKS_CONFIGURATION and SYSTEM_TASKS_CONFIGURATION nodes and identify tasks by property pairs that have values of 'Configurated' or 'Pending'. Run it from /Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/resetConfigTask.sh -product <product> -task <task> (on Unix/Linux)\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\resetConfigTask.bat -product <product> -task <task> (on Microsoft Windows). • Converting .docx to pdf (or .doc to pdf, or .doc to odt, etc.) with libreoffice on a webserver on the fly using php

  Ok, so I needed to convert .docx files to .pdf files on the fly, but none of the free php libraries that were available let me do it on my server (a webservice was not good enough). Basically either I needed to pay for a library (and have it maybe suck) or just deal with the free ones that didn't convert the formatting well enough. Not good enough! I found that LibreOffice (OpenOffice's successor) allows command line conversion using the LibreOffice conversion engine (which DID preserve the formatting like I wanted and generally worked great). I loaded the latest version of Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download) onto my Virtual Box (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads) on my computer and found that I was able to easily convert files using the commandline like this: libreoffice --headless -convert-to pdf fileToConvert.docx -outdir output/path/for/pdf I thought: sweet...but I don't have admin rights on my host's web server. I tried to use a "portable" version of LibreOffice that I obtained from http://portablelinuxapps.org/ but I was unable to get it to work on my host's webserver, because my host's webserver didn't have all the dependencies (Dependency Hell! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dependency_hell) I was at a loss of how to make it work, until I ran across a cool project made by a Ph.D. student (Philip J. Guo) at Stanford called CDE: http://www.stanford.edu/~pgbovine/cde.html I will let you look at his explanations of how it works (I followed what he did in http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6XdwHo1BWwY, starting at about 32:00 as well as the directions on his site), but in short, it allows one to avoid dependency hell by copying all the files used when you run certain commands, recreating the linux environment where the command worked. I was able to use this to run LibreOffice without having to resort to someone's portable version of it, and it worked just like it did when I did it on Ubuntu with the command above, with a tweak: I needed to run the wrapper of LibreOffice the CDE generated. So, below is my PHP code that calls it. In this code snippet, the filename to be copied is passed in as $_POST["filename"]. I copy the file to the same spot where I originally converted the file, convert it, copy it back and then delete all the files (so that it doesn't start growing exponentially). I did it this way because I wasn't able to make it work otherwise on the webserver. If there is a linux + webserver ninja out there that can figure out how to make it work without doing this, I would be interested to know what you did. Unpack the tar.gz and run the php script above from the "documents" folder. Success! I made a truly portable version of LibreOffice that can convert files on the fly on a webserver using 100% free, open source software!

• I am not able to delete a corrupt NTFS partition on my pen drive. How can I force its deletion?

  I formatted my 16GB pen drive with the NTFS file system in windows vista. After that I started copying some files. However, only a few files were copied to the pen drive before the copy operation hung. So I cancelled the copy operation. Now I am unable to use the pen drive. I DON'T REALLY NEED ANY FILES THAT I COPIED TO THE PENDRIVE. I JUST WANT TO USE THE PENDRIVE AGAIN. I have tried using Ubuntu to format the pen drive. But when i use fdisk to delete the partition, it looks like it is working fine but in fact it does not delete the partition. Also I am unable to format it with any other file system. When I tried to use gparted, it throws the following error: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 14: The disk contains an unclean file system(0,0). The file system wasn't safely closed on window. Fixing ntfs_attr_pread_i:ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to read NTFS$Bitmap:Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a softRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important!. If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the dmraid documentation for more details When I searched the Internet I found help on how to recover. But I don’t want to recover, I want to format it again. When I pressed w after deleting the partition, it took more time than previously. After that i removed the pen drive and re-inserted, but the partition I had deleted was still present. If I simply type the command fdisk /dev/sdb without removing the pen drive after the partition is deleted, then it returns the error message Unable to open /dev/sdb.   I thought it worth sharing about property overwrite behaviour because i found it confusing at first in the hope of preventing some learning pain for the uninitiated with MSBuild :-)The confusion for me came because of the redundancy of using a Condition statement in a _project_ level property to test that a property has not been previously set.   I know you are thinking (or maybe yelling), "not another question asking where validation belongs in a layered architecture?!?" Well, yes, but hopefully this will be a little bit of a different take on the subject. I am a firm believer that validation takes many forms, is context-based and varies at each level of the architecture. That is the basis for the post - helping to identify what type of validation should be performed in each layer. In addition, a question that often comes up is where authorization checks belong. The example scenario comes from an application for a catering business. Periodically during the day, a driver may turn in to the office any excess cash they've accumulated while taking the truck from site to site. The application allows a user to record the 'cash drop' by collecting the driver's ID, and the amount. • Where is the documentation for MSBUILD arguments to run MSDEPLOY?

  There is an excellent PDC talk available here which describes the new MSDEPLOY features in Visual Studio 2010 - as well as how to deploy an application within TFS. The talk explains some of the command line parameters such as : /p:DeployOnBuild /p:DeployTarget=MsDeployPublish /p:CreatePackageOnPublish=True /p:MSDeployPublishMethod=InProc /p:MSDeployServiceURL=localhost /p:DeployIISAppApth="Default Web Site" But where is the documentation for this - explaining how they work and what i should use? Most of these turn up very few or zero results when searching. Isn't there some actual documentation for these parameters somewhere? I'd rather use these to deploy than try to add a command line exec command to run the package. I've managed to create a web deployment package, which TFS is copying to the output. But I'm ending up with all kinds of errors trying to actually deploy the package. Currently in my build configuration in TFS I have the following arguments for MSBuild Arguments /p:DeployOnBuild=True /p:DeployTarget=MsDeployPublish /p:Configuration=Release /p:CreatePackageOnPublish=True /p:DeployIisAppPath=staging.example.com /p:MsDeployServiceUrl=localhost This however gives me this error : Is there any actual real documentation for these arguments? It would probably take me about 5 minutes to get it running the package by the command line, but i want to get them deploying like this because it will simplify multiple configurations later.

  Before asking a separate question I've done lots of googling about it and added a comment in the already existing stackoverflow question.   I'm having troubles using the Microsoft.Exchange.Management.PowerShell.Admin on a server. The server is not the one running Exchange 2007, it's a remote server (in the same zone). I can't figure out how to add the Snapin for Powershell - Microsoft.Exchange.Management.PowerShell.Admin. Is it possible to just get the dll file from the Exchange 2007 server, and copy it to the server where my code is running? Can someone please explain what I need to do to get my code running? The exception that i'm getting now is: "No Windows PowerShell Snap-ins are available for version 1".   I have a WCF RIA Domain Service that contains a method I'd like to invoke when the user clicks a button: [Invoke] public MyEntity PerformAnalysis(int someId) { return new MyEntity(); } However, when I try to compile I'm given the following error: Operation named 'PerformAnalysis' does not conform to the required signature. Return types must be an entity, collection of entities, or one of the predefined serializable types. The thing is, as far as I can tell, MyEntity is an entity: [Serializable] public class MyEntity: EntityObject, IMyEntity { [Key] [DataMember] [Editable(false)] public int DummyKey { get; set; } [DataMember] [Editable(false)] public IEnumerable<SomeOtherEntity> Children { get; set; } } I figure I'm missing something simple here. Could someone please tell me how I can create an invokable method that returns a single MyEntity object?

• Exception seem in an eclipse GMF application when file not present in workspace

  I am developing a GMF application . In this situation , I start my workspace and load a file in the workspace . Then I close the workspace and then delete the file from the workspace . After that, I try to restart my application and restore the workspace . Of course , now since the file does not exist , there are going to be exceptions . I tried a lot to handle these exceptions but if I try to get rid of one exception , then another pops up . Does anyone know what methods do I have to override in order to handle this situation correctly . • Powershell Transcript is empty when running script from SQL Agent Job in 2005 SQL Server

  I have a complex Powershell script that gets run as part of a SQL 2005 Server Agent Job. The script works fine, but it uses the "Start-Transcript $strLogfile -Append" command to log all of it's actions to a transcript file. The problem is that the transcript is always empty. It adds the header and footer to indicate that the transcript is starting and stopping, but it doesn't actually log anything. Example: ********************** Windows PowerShell Transcript Start Start time: 20100304173001 Username : xxxxxxxxxxxx\SYSTEM Machine : xxxxx-xxx (Microsoft Windows NT 5.2.3790 Service Pack 2) ********************** ********************** Windows PowerShell Transcript End End time: 20100304173118 ********************** When I execute the script from a command prompt or start - run everything works just fine. Here is the command used to run the script (same command used in the Operating system CmdExec step of the SQL Agent Job) powershell.exe -File "c:\temp\Backup\backup script.ps1" I first thought it must have something to do with the script running under the System account (default SQL Agent account), but even when I tried changing the SQL Agent to run under my own personal account it still created a blank transcript. Is there any way to get PowerShell Transcripts to work when executing them as part of a 2005 SQL Server Agent Job?

  Hey all, I'm using Selenium Webdriver to do some robottesting. Since some functions appear to only work in Firefox, I'm obligated to use Firefoxdriver. Now and then, something weird happens. Starting up te driver driver = new FirefoxDriver(); driver.get(URL); gets firefox to startup but not to go to the specified url. The strange thing is that it works on another computer with the same preferences set in Firefox. I solved this problem once by changing to another version of firefox, but this time this doesn't do the trick for me, it did however worked for the other developers. Yes, the error started for all developers on the same time, same day... My first question is: is it a firefox problem or Webdriver problem. A little background: I use PowerShell on windows xp at work and I set a bunch of useful shortcuts in Microsoft.PowerShell_profile.ps1 in My Documents, trying to emulate Mac environment inspired by Ryan Bates's shortcuts I have things like: Set-Alias rsc Rails-Console function Rails-Console {Invoke-Expression "ruby script/console"} Which works just fine when in command prompt I say: rsc #it calls the proper command However this doesn't work properly Set-Alias rsg Rails-Generate function Rails-Generate {Invoke-Expression "ruby script/generate"} So when I do : rsg model User which is supposed to call ruby script/generate model User all it calls is ruby script/generate #Dumping my params So how would I properly modify my functions to take params I send to functions? • .Net opening and clossing database connections

  I currently designed the data access portion of our framework so that every time a business object needed to interact with the database it would have to open a connection, invoke the data access layer (to execute the query), and then close the connection. Then if it needed to run in a transaction it would open the connection, begin the transaction, invoke the data access layer (to execute the query) and then commit the transaction, close the transaction, and finally close the connection. I did it this way with the mindset of open late and close early...but what if I needed to call other BO's to submit data in a single transaction? Is there a better way to handle opening and closing connections as well as working with transactions? I'm a rookie at architecting applications so I hope I'm not doing this wrong...any help is appreciated.

The LayoutGrid is set a DataContext in which there is a Ladders list as a property. This Ladders list is set as the ItemsSource for the PART_datagrid. <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot"> <DataGrid x:Name="PART_datagrid" ItemsSource="{Binding Ladders}"> ... <DataGridTemplateColumn> <DataGridTemplateColumn.CellTemplate> <DataTemplate> <Button Name="DeleteLadder" Click.Command="{Binding ElementName=LayoutRoot, Path=DataContext.DeleteLadderCommand}" /> Now in one of the DataGridTemplateColumns I have a button which should invoke a Command thats present in the LayoutGrid's DataContext. So I tried Element-To-Element binding on my DataTemplate button as follows <Button Name="DeleteLadder" Click.Command="{Binding ElementName=LayoutRoot, Path=DataContext.DeleteLadderCommand}" /> But this does not seem to work. What I want to achieve is to handle the event of deletion of a DataGrid row at the parent DataContext level using the command. Can someone pls suggest how do I proceed on this? Thanks in advance...
