• Windows 7 PC crashes after being locked a few minutes

  I have a problem with an Optiplex 755 PC running (32-bit) Windows 7 Professional. I just installed the operating system last week, and ever since, it seems to crash when I lock the screen. It doesn't happen immediately; it's usually after I walk away, so a few minutes (but I'm not sure exactly how many). I have this non-specific error in the Event log. I've run a chkdsk, thinking it might be hard drive-related, but that didn't help. • Advantages of multiple SQL Server files with a single RAID array

  Originally posted on stack overflow, but re-worded. Imagine the scenario : For a database I have RAID arrays R: (MDF) T: (transaction log) and of course shared transparent usage of X: (tempDB). I've been reading around and get the impression that if you are using RAID then adding multiple SQL Server NDF files sitting on R: within a filegroup won't yeild any more improvements. Of course, adding another raid array S: and putting an NDF file on that would. However, being a reasonably savvy software person, it's not unthinkable to hypothesise that, even for smaller MDFs sitting on one RAID array that SQL Server will perform growth and locking operations (for writes) on the MDF, so adding NDFs to the filegroup even if they sat on R: would distribute the locking operations and growth operations allowing more throughput? Or does the time taken to reconstruct the data from distributed filegroups outweigh the benefits of reduced locking? I'm also aware that the behaviour and benefits may be different for tables/indeces/log. Is there a good site that distinguishes the benefits of multiple files when RAID is already in place?

• How can I have Windows 8 go to the desktop by default?

  I've played around a smidge with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview in a VirtualBox VM and I think the improvements under the hood may be worth tolerating the Metro UI crap. I don't like that the entire screen changes to something I don't care about when I hit the Windows key and start typing but I can deal with it. The one thing I cannot stand, though, is that it starts in the Metro interface by default. I have to hit the "Desktop" tile to get to a normal interface, and while I can hit "escape" to go back to the desktop and dismiss Metro, it doesn't work when you first log in. When you first log in, you have to hit that "Desktop" tile. I know that the Enterprise versions of Windows 8 will go to the desktop by default. I don't know but I would assume that there's probably some registry key that would handle this. Has anyone figured that out yet?

• Mysterious login attempts to windows server

  I have a Windows 2008R2 server that is reporting failed login attempts from a number of workstations on our network. Some event log details: Event ID 4625, Status: 0xc000006d, Sub Status: 0xc0000064 Security ID: NULL SID, Account Name: joedoe, Account Domain: Acme Workstation Name: WINXP1, Source Network Address: 192.168.1.23, Source Port: 1904 Logon Process: NtLmSsp, Authentication Package: NTLM, Logon Type: 3 (network) I believe this is coming from some netbios service or similar (maybe the file explorer), keeping an inventory of its network neighborhood and also trying to authenticate. Is there a way to turn this off without having to turn off file sharing all together? In other words, clients authenticating against file servers that they use is of course no problem, but I want to eliminate clients trying to authenticate to servers that they are not using and have no business with. The above example is only one of thousands of log alerts for similar failed network authentications. What can I do to clean this up / handle this? Thanks.

• Large invoice database structure and rendering

  Our client has a MS SQL database that has 1 million customer invoice records in it. Using the database, our client wants its customers to be able to log into a frontend web site and then be able to view, modify and download their company’s invoices. Given the size of the database and the large number of customers who may log into the web site at any time, we are concerned about data base engine performance and web page invoice rendering performance. The 1 million invoice database is for just 90 days sales, so we will remove invoices over 90 days old from the database. Most of the invoices have multiple line items. We can easily convert our invoices into various data formats so for example it is easy for us to convert to and from SQL to XML with related schema and XSLT. Any data conversion would be done on another server so as not to burden the web interface server. We have tentatively decided to run the web site on a .NET Framework IIS web server using MS SQL on MS Azure. How would you suggest we structure our database for best performance? For example, should we put all the invoices of all customers located within the same 5 digit or 6 digit zip codes into the same table? Or could we set up a separate home directory for each customer on IIS and place each customer’s invoices in each customer’s home directory in XML format? And secondly what would you suggest would be the best method to render customer invoices on a web page and allow customers to modify for best performance? The ADO.net XML Data Set looks intriguing to us as a method, but we have never used it.

• DSL PPPoE connection not working?

  I use a wired PPPoE connection to connect to the Internet. What I need to do on Windows to connect to it is put in static IP address, gateway, subnet mask and DNS servers for my LAN card. Next I have to create a dialer for a PPPoE connection, put in my user name, the service name and the password, and "dial" this connection. And it works fine. On Ubuntu 10.04, however, I have tried setting things up in a similar fashion - put in all static addresses for the "automatic" wired connection, then put in user name, service name, password for a "DSL" connection. It worked for a while, then stopped. I have tried putting in all the details within the DSL configuration dialog, same thing happened - it worked for a while, then stopped. I have tried deleting the ethernet connection and only keeping the DSL one with all the numbers put in place, same thing happened - it worked for a while, then stopped. Each of the times, when it connected, it connected randomly, after trying a few times, and either stopped working within a few minutes, or after I had rebooted. I have deleted and remade the connection dozens of times - even with different names, but nothing seems to be working. I have also tried pppoeconf from the terminal, didn't work. I have checked /var/log/kern.log, but nothing changes in the file when I try to connect. I have also checked /sbin/route, but gedit can't even open it (says it can't figure the character encoding...). The "connection established" notification pops up from the top right corner, the same way as when the computer is actually connected to a network. Can anyone figure what's wrong and how it can be solved?

• FIX: Visual Studio Post Build Event Returns &ndash;1 when it should not.

  I had written a Console Application that I run as part of my post build for other projects..  The Console application logs a series of messages to the console as it executes.  I use the Environment.ExitCode value to specify an error or success condition.  When the application executes without issue, the ExitCode is 0, when there is a problem its –1. As part of my logging, I log the value of the exit code right before the application terminates.  When I run this executable from the command line, it behaves as it should; error scenarios return –1 and success scenarios return 0.   When I run the same command line as part of the post-build event, Visual Studio reports the exit code as –1, even when the application reports the exit code as 0.   A snippet of the build output follows: Verbose: Exiting with ExitCode=0 C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Microsoft.Common.targets(3397,13): error MSB3073: The command ""MGC.exe" "-TargetPath=C:\TFS\Solutions\Research\Source\Framework\Services\Identity\STS\_STSBuilder\bin\Debug\_STSBuilder.dll" C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Microsoft.Common.targets(3397,13): error MSB3073:  C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Microsoft.Common.targets(3397,13): error MSB3073: " exited with code -1. The Application returns a 0 exit code.  But visual studio is reporting an error.  Why? The answer is in the way I format my log messages.  Apparently Visual Studio watches the messages that get streamed to the the output console.  If those messages match a pattern used by visual studio to communicate errors, Visual Studio assumes an error has occurred in the executable and returns a –1.  This post details the formats used by Visual Studio to determine error conditions. In my case, the presence of the colon was tripping up Visual studio.  I Replaced all occurrences of colon with an equal sign and Visual Studio once again respected the exit code of the application. • Windows XP long login (15 minutes +)

  I'm having a lot of issues with our Windows XP SP3 machines (about 5, but every week another gets on the bandwagon of this issue). They take forever (15 minutes) to apply the user settings once our employee's enter their username and password to login to our domain. It only happens say if a user has reboot the machine and then when they go to log back in then it hangs forever. Reboot and restart are the key words for sure I've noticed with this issue. Here are things I have tested: •Made sure the DNS was set to point to our two servers (Server01 & Server02 are DNS Domain Controllers, 01 is primary and 02 backup). •No major changes have been applied to our network. •All profiles are local, so I have deleted out local profiles that aren't being used on those machines that run slow. •Also I have tried to enable and disable the Enable Fast Login under the local machines GP. It was not configured originally and when I tested both, it made the computer hang on "applying computer settings" for about 15 minutes. When it finally came up to the login screen the it was very quick to login to the domain. However this doesn't fix my issue, and even more frustrating upon setting it back to being not configured it now still takes for forever to apply computer settings. •I enabled the userenv log and here is what I see, but my experience is limited and I'm not sure how to read it exactly. • Gesture Detector not firing

  So I'm trying to create a input class that implements a InputHandler & GestureListener in order to support both Android & Desktop. The problem is that not all the methods are being called properly. • Cannot activate windows 7

  I can't activate Windows 7, I get an error saying DNS name does not exist. Is something configured incorrectly somewhere? PS: I need the answer within 13 days ;) UPDATE: I had upgraded from my company's Windows Vista build, and when I connect to the company VPN and activate I get a different error: The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see the Application Event Log for additional information. • Apache service hung and incoming requests not accepted

  Hi, My production server is running Apache v2.2.4 with mod_mono v1.2.4 on CentOS release 5.2 (Final). Suddenly, Apache service hung during normal usage time (approx. 1 pm EDT). Traffic is not too high at this time. This is the first time we're noticing this kind of behaviour in our server. I noticed from access log that even subsequent requests are also not received, even though there were incoming requests. I then manually tried to invoke my application call from web browser, it never returned successfully but it was still loading. I found no unusual behaviour/activity in: 1) Apache access_log and error_log 2) No kernel level errors found in /var/log/messages I've no other option but ended up restarting Apache service. Any idea on what would cause Apache to hang and thereby not allowing subsequent incoming requests? How do I debug/diagnose when this happens next time? Experts advice/recommendation on this are highly appreciated.

  I've got an HTPC that I built myself, with a Asus P5G41T-M Motherboard. It's got an on-board HDMI port, and I've been using that with no problems. I started out with Mythbuntu ( an older version ), and recently updated to 12.04.1 LTS without any issues. I've been thinking about trying out XBMC for a while, and I decided to give it a go. Unfortunately, I seem to be running into quite a few issues. I got XBMC installed from the repos without any issues, but when I try to run it from a console, a box pops up with the following: XBMC needs hardware accelerated OpenGL rendering. Install an appropriate graphics driver. • Run application or script on Windows RDC connection

  I checked this thread, but it did not solve my exact problem. I need to run a script on when a connection is made across my network using windows remote desktop connection. The thread listed above works for the initial login, however, if I don't log out (which is necessary for some processes running on my network), then it wont run the script again the next time someone connects to the system using remote desktop connection. Previously we were using pcAnywhere to achieve this, however after running into some graphical issues with pcAnywhere, we have decided to move away from it to RDC. For a little more information, we need to have an email sent out anytime a connection is made to particular machines. The login name will always be the same for those systems and we do not log off when closing the connection.

No. theres no way to look in server's console right after when it freezes, sadly. Datacenter supporters do not really want to help about that. Server has been installed 30th july, times and dates of freezes are down there: 6 august, 0:25 18 august, 2:27 21 august, 1:25 26 august, 23:26. We decided that freezing around ??:25 isn't a hardware fault, and decided to reinstall the OS. Later, 31 august, our admin backed up all files, reinstalled Debian, and restored the backup. But then, 7 september, server went down again, at 5:05. We thought it was related to Anyone else experiencing high rates of Linux server crashes during a leap second day? and turned ntp off. But then the server went down twice again, 21 september, 17:29 and 24 september, 20:27. I called all linux admins I knew to help with solving it and they said everything is fine about configuring OS and it could be hardware only. But they dont know why it always freezes at XX:25-30. Maybe some of you know about something related to that?

  I'm trying to get Cyrus IMAP (v 2.2 on Ubuntu 9.04) setup and working, but I'm having a bit of trouble getting the login working correctly. I've created a mailbox for my test user "nrahl": cm user/nrahl and then created a password: $ saslpasswd2 nrahl I'm attempting to connect to the mailbox using Thunderbird. I'm using the machine's LAN IP address as the host, and "nrahl" as the username. It connects to the server and prompts me for the password.
