• SQL Profiler Through StreamInsight Sample Solution

  In this postI show how you can use StreamInsight to take events coming from SQL Server Profiler in real-time and do some analytics whilst the data is in flight.  Here is the solution for that post.  The download contains Project that reads events from a previously recorded trace file Project that starts a trace and captures events in real-time from a custom trace definition file (Included) It is a very simple solution and could be extended.  Whilst this example traces against SQL Server it would be trivial to change this so it profiles events in Analysis Services.       Enjoy.

  Hi, I presented a talk on Windows Phone 7 @ MoMo and got awesome response, even though WP7 is quite new still. I also demoed 2 applications on both emulator and the actual device. It enjoy the look on audience faces when they see the app actually work on actual device. I see a great opportunity on WP7 and everyone I met agrees on the fact the WP7 has a very bright future ahead. The Ecosystem which WP7 has (developing/ debugging tools, emulator, almost flat learning curve,  office/sharepoint integration a lively forum, marketplace) makes it a major player in mobile, already. • Evolution and thunderbird sharing same mail data?

  Hi, I have been using Evolution for a quite long and it has downloaded around 1.6GBs of mails from gmail. I want to try thunderbird but I dont want to re download everything again. Is that possible to have both clients sharing same data? I'll make sure I don't use both at the same time if that matters. I'll move to thunderbird fully if I'm happy with it. Problems I face with evolution is that I have to have the GUI running always if I want to get instant alerts and send mail immediately. Also it loads the messages slow and even after I move to the next mail, it slowly downloads all the linked images before moving on.

• GeoToolkit Demo Embedded in an Application Framework via Maven

  As a follow on to yesterday's blog entry, here's the equivalent starter application for GeoToolkit (also known as Geotk) on the NetBeans Platform, which ends up looking like this: The above is a border.shp file I found on-line, while here's a USA states shape file rendered in the application: Note that the navigation bar is also included, though that could later be migrated into the menu bar of the NetBeans Platform.  Download the Maven based NetBeans Platform application with GeoToolkit integration here: http://java.net/projects/nb-api-samples/sources/api-samples/show/versions/7.3/tutorials/geospatial/geotoolkit/MyGeospatialSystem It was quite tricky getting this sample together, parts of it, especially the installer, which creates the database, comes from the Puzzle GIS project, while the files come from on-line locations, with the JAI-related dependencies providing problems of their own. • Issues with nVidia GeForce 210 while watching movies

  Ever since 10.04 I have been trying to resolve an issue with my graphics card - nVidia GeForce 210. I'm having issues when I watch movies - they are jumping all the time, even with Compiz disabled and when that is the only thing I am doing. I have tried the solution to How to get NVidia GeForce GT 210 drivers working on Lucid Lynx? but it didn't work. How can I fix this? Here are the steps I took: apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau edit /etc/default/grub to add the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nouveau.modeset=0" sudo update-grub Reboot Download official Linux drivers from nVidia site. sh filename-of-downloaded-driver-package

• How do I install pgAdmin III for postgreSQL 9.2?

  I have a Windows server that runs postgresql 9.2. I want to hit it using pgAdmin III from my Ubuntu 12.10 workstation box. I installed pgAdmin III from synaptic and also tried direct download from postgreSQL site using software installer. Regardless, I can get only get pgAdmin III for postgresql 9.1. When I run pgAdmin III and point to my server I get an error message telling me that the database is 9.2 and my pgAdmin III is for 9.1, isn't compatible with 9.2. I can access the server itself fine OK from the Ubuntu box - I have Python programs that hit the database with no problems - but I need pgAdmin III for 9.2 running under Ubuntu 12.10. Is it available? Where do I get it?

• Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 7 SP1 released to manufacturers

  SP1 went RTM today which means it will be widely available soon. According  to the Microsoft server division blog, the service pack will be available to Microsoft's TechNet and MSDN subscribers, as well as to Microsoft volume licensing customers, on Feb. 16, 2011. • Need a non-X terminal for the nvidia driver installation

  When I try to install the nvidia driver for my video card, I receive an error message. ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before installing. For further details, please see the section INSTALLING THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com. I wasn't able to find the README on the website but how do I create a terminal that is non-X? I am on 12.04.

• How do you go about checking your open source libraries for keystroke loggers?

  A random person on the internet told me that a technology was secure(1), safe to use and didn't contain keyloggers because it is open source. While I can trivially detect the key stroke logger in this open source application, what can developers(2) do to protect themselves against rouge committers to open source projects? Doing a back of the envelope threat analysis, if I were a rogue developer, I'd fork a branch on git and promote it's download since it would have twitter support (and a secret key stroke logger). If it was an SVN repo, I'd create just create a new project. Even better would be to put the malicious code in the automatic update routines. (1) I won't mention which because I can only deal with one kind of zealot at a time. (2) Ordinary users are at the mercy of their virus and malware detection software-- it's absurd to expect grandma to read the source of code of their open source word processor's source code to find the keystroke logger.

• Where to find PHP version usage stats?

  My original question was: what percentage of sites are using php 5.4.x? (As it has some very interesting new features.) With secondary questions like how many of the cheap web hosting places have upgraded, which versions of the linux distros include it, etc. But I'm coming up blanks. http://php.net/usage.php stops at July 2007, and the nexen.net website seems to have stopped in 2008. At SecuritySpace they only list the web servers, not php versions. The TIOBE link isn't what I'm after (it doesn't -- and couldn't -- break down by version number. I thought php.net might show download numbers, but I cannot see them anywhere. I kind of answered the distro question, but it requires a lot of clicking around at distrowatch.com. E.g. I see here that Ubuntu offers php 5.4.6 in the latest snapshot, but the latest release (Ubuntu 12.04) has 5.3.10.

• Can using an apt proxy (d-i mirror/http/proxy string http://mymirror) affect the installation of a .deb?

  I have been doing Ubuntu deployment using a preseed.cfg. After becoming comfortable with the packages being installed it was time to reduce download time and internet traffic by creating a mirror. I ended up doing a "partial mirror" using apt-cacher-ng and preseeding it by adding d-i mirror/http/proxy string http://mymirror to the preseed.cfg. This is where things got strange. I have a few .debs that I run as part of preseed/late_command by wgetting them and installing them with dpkg -i. The packages were installing without issue until added the proxy. With the proxy they fail to install. So does the proxy affect installing .debs during preseeded installation?

• Ubuntu 12.04 version of Netbeans doesn't have the JavaFX plugin

  I just want to know why does Netbeans 7.0.1 from the official Ubuntu 12.04 doesn't have all the plugins (in especial the JavaFX plugin) on it while the official Netbeans from the website (even the version with the less plugin), has it by default ? And how can we change that ? Because I love Ubuntu (even if it is extremly slow on my Asus 1215N (it is the only OS that is slow on it, but that's not very important), but I am trying to use it only with the software provided by the Original repositories without having to download manually or even use any PPA. • /var/lib/dpkg/lock.....help!

  I had to reinstall the entire OS a little while ago and I have been trying to reinstall all of the programs I had before but I got a bit a of a problem now. I was trying to download dropbox from synaptic but it cannot finish the process and as a result I cannot update anything anymore. The line that comes out is: E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it? I have tried: sudo apt-get install -f sudo apt-get -f install sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock sudo apt-get -f update sudo dpkg --clear-selections sudo dpkg --configure -a But nothing seems to work. So is there a way to solve this?? Thanks

  How to do a grep in a variable? I have stored the wget output in a variable and I need to extract out some strings from it. Like the content of the variable is upgrade http://wordpress.org/download/ http://wordpress.org/wordpress-3.0.5.zip 3.0.5 en_US 4.3 4.1.2 I need to check if the string contains the word upgrade, so I can do a simple grep and then check the exit status of it by $? and proceed. But how can I get the value 3.0.5 which is actually the fourth word? And how to actually grep in a variable?
