  Any time there is an update within my music community (song comment, artist update, new song added, yadda yadda yadda), a new row is inserted in my "updates" table. The row houses the artist id involved along with other information (what type of change, time and date, etc). My users have a "favorite artists" section where they can do just that -- mark artists as their favorites. As such, I'd like to create a new feature that shows the user the changes made to their various favorite artists. How should I be doing this efficiently? SELECT * FROM table_updates WHERE artist_id = 1 and artist_id = 500 and artist_id = 60032 Keep in mind, a user could have 43,000 of our artists marked as a favorite. Thoughts?

  So, that's how works Interesting Tags: I add into them my interested tags like php, mysql, jquery and so on. Then, if any of questions has the same tags as mine it makes background orange. I understand how to use jquery to do that (there were related questions to that), but without mysql it can't be done. Now, here is a question. How is it done? I imagine like that: There is a row in mysql for every member, let's call it "interested_tags". After I write and submit my tag through input, it is being written in a row "interested_tags". Then, the main page has a query which shows all answers and it always checks answer's with mine tags with strpos like this if(strpos($question_tags, $my_tags) === true) {        //and here will be made background orange } Am I thinking right or is there any way to do it?

• Recordset Update errors when updating sql_variant field

  I'm using C++ and ADO to add data to a SQL Server 2005 database. When calling the Recordset Update method for a sql_variant column I'm getting the error DB_E_ERRORSOCCURRED and the error message Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done. If the value I'm adding is NULL all works fine and all values going to the fields that are not sql_variant types work. Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong? Thanks [Edit] I have some more information. The value we are storing is the empty string - ADO appears to want to store this in the sql_variant as a nchar(0), which of course is not a valid SQL data type. Is there a way to get an empty string in a sql_variant using the ADO batch commands?

  I'm working on a test page and am using MySQLi prepared statements in my queries after reading they make my code safe from SQL injection. I have been successful with prepared statements so far with retrieving data from my DB, that all works great. What I want to do now is count the number of galleries within a project using SELECT COUNT(*). That's it. Without using a prepared statement, my old query looked like this: // count number of galleries per project $conn = dbConnect('query'); $galNumb = "SELECT COUNT(*) FROM pj_galleries WHERE project = {$pjInfo['pj_id']}"; $gNumb = $conn->query($galNumb); $row = $gNumb->fetch_row(); $galTotal = $row[0]; But for all my reading and searching the internet, I can not find out the proper way to write this as a prepared statement. • Affine Transforms with Demo App

  I have a demo app here https://github.com/rdetert/image-transform-test After importing an image, you can pinch, zoom, rotate the image. What I want to do is save out a 640x480 image (landscape mode) that looks identical to the live preview. So if there are 100px bars of empty space on the sides, I need the same empty bars in the final output (scaled appropriately). This is proving to be more difficult than I thought it would be. I can't quite get it to come out right after days of working on it. The magic method that generates the final image is called -(void)generateFinalImage Good luck! ;)

First of all, the user fill an html table with the values that he has selected and written in the form. after that he will find his parameters displayed in the html table. the problem now is : the table contains in each row an edit button when clicking on it; the user should have the form automatically filled with values"previously selected" of the row. so it's how to reload the form with variables from html table. • Can I Select and Update at the same time?

  This is an over-simplified explanation of what I'm working on. I have a table with status column. Multiple instances of the application will pull the contents of the first row with a status of NEW, update the status to WORKING and then go to work on the contents. It's easy enough to do this with two database calls; first the SELECT then the UPDATE. But I want to do it all in one call so that another instance of the application doesn't pull the same row. Sort of like a SELECT_AND_UPDATE thing. Is a stored procedure the best way to go?

• Preserve trailing whitespace Sybase

  I have a big chunk of textual data which I split and write multiple rows of a varchar(255) column of a table. Sometimes, the last character happens to be a space. When I read back this row, the trailing space is chopped and I get only 254 characters. This messes up my data when I append the next row to the end of this one. My code sends the full 255 char (incl space) to the DB API. How can I check that the trailing space is actually written to the table? I am not in a position to rewrite/redesign legacy code. Is there any setting - either in the DB, DB interface, read/write calls etc - that I can use to preserve the trailing space?

  I have a long list of li's. <ul> <li> <img src="test.jpg"> </li> <li> <img src="test.jpg"> </li> //etc Each li has this styling: width: 10%; display: inline-block; vertical-align: middle; When I get to more than 10 li's in a row, they go on to the next row. Is this the correct way to do it? or should I wrap each 10 li's into something that breaks the line? What the best/correct method? i intialy chose this method as it would be easily to loop out data from a database.

• Efficient way to update all rows in a table

  Hi, I have a table with a lot of records (could be more than 500 000 or 1 000 000). I added a new column in this table and I need to fill a value for every row in the column, using the corresponding row value of another column in this table. I tried to use separate transactions for selecting every next chunk of 100 records and update the value for them, but still this takes hours to update all records in Oracle10 for example. What is the most efficient way to do this in SQL, without using some dialect-specific features, so it works everywhere (Oracle, MSSQL, MySQL, PostGre etc.)?

• Data validation between SQL replicated tables

  Hi All, I am trying to figure out a way to validate the data in my publisher and subscriber in SQL 2005 replication. I thought of using sp_publication_validation, but it needs db_owner permission and we are not allowed to have it in our company. So I did bit more reading and found out about two other SPs that I think work for me. First one is sp_article_validation, which I plan to run on the publisher. For each article that I call this SP, its gonna give the row count and a checksum. With that info, I intend to call sp_table_validation on the subscriber, passing the row count and checksum from the previous SP, there by validating both tables. What do you guys think? Is this a proven way to validate data in replication? There is very little documentation on these SPs. • Archiving rows dynamically

  I was wondering what would be the best solution to dynamically archive rows. For instance when a user marks a task as completed, that task needs to be archived yet still accessible. What would be the best practices for achieving this? Should I just leave it all in the same table and leave out completed tasks from the queries? I'm afraid that over time the table will become huge (1,000,000 rows in a year or less). Or should I create another table ie task_archive and query that row whenever data is needed from it? I know similar questions have been asked before but most of them where about archiving thousands of rows simultaneously, I just need to know what would be the best method (and why) to archive 1 row at a time once it's been marked completed
