  I intend to build a simple recommendation systems for fun. I read a little on the net and figured being good at math would enable on to build a good recommendation system. My math skills are not good. I am willing to put considerable efforts and time in learning maths. Can you please tell me what mathematics topics should I cover? Also if any of you folks can point me to some online material to learn from it would be great. I am aware of MIT OCW, book like collective intelligence. Math Topics to cover and from where to read would really help.

• Loading Ajax within a Google Maps InfoWindow

  I have put together a 5 star rating system using PHP and Ajax which will write the rating into a database. • GAE uploading to database - or - how to create big dictionary in GAE?

  Hi, I have a GAE application. A new request is to have a huge database to store many items for some functionality. The database needs to populated every week or so - and populating it is done by querying many external links which overall takes around 1-2 hours. So, doing it via GAE Cron is now out of the question. Another option I was thinking was to create it in external server and then uploading it to GAE DB. Is it possible to upload the data created externally to GAE DB straightaway? The question is because there will be close to 10 M items in it, so adding items individually to a DB is not going to work due to 30 second time limit. Thanks K

  Hi, I have the following model structure class Authors(db.Model) : nickname = db.StringProperty(required=True) fullname = db.StringProperty(required=True) class Articles(db.Model) : title = db.StringProperty(required=True) body = db.StringProperty(required=True) author = db.ReferenceProperty(Authors, required=True) class Favorites(db.Model) : who = db.ReferenceProperty(Authors, required=True) what = db.ReferenceProperty(Articles, required=True) I'd like to display 10 last articles according to this pattern: article.title, article.body, article.author(nickname), info if this article has been already favorited by the signed in user. I have added a function which I use to get the authors of these articles using only one query (it is described here) But I don't know what to do with the favorites (I'd like to know which of the displayed articles have been favorited by me using less than 10 queries (I want to display 10 articles)). Is it possible?

• How can I Query only __key__ on a Google Appengine PolyModel child?

  So the situation is: I want to optimize my code some for doing counting of records. So I have a parent Model class Base, a PolyModel class Entry, and a child class of Entry Article: How would I query Article.key so I can reduce the query load but only get the Article count. My first thought was to use: q = db.GqlQuery("SELECT __key__ from Article where base = :1", i_base) but it turns out GqlQuery doesn't like that because articles are actually stored in a table called Entry. Would it be possible to Query the class attribute? something like: q = db.GqlQuery("select __key__ from Entry where base = :1 and :2 in class", i_base, 'Article') neither of which work. Turns out the answer is even easier. But I am going to finish this question because I looked everywhere for this. q = db.GqlQuery("select __key__ from Entry where base = :1 and class = :2", i_base, 'Article')

  What I'm trying to do is query the datastore for a model where the key is not the key of an object I already have. Here's some code: class User(db.Model): partner = db.SelfReferenceProperty() def text_message(self, msg): user = User.get_or_insert(msg.sender) if not user.partner: # user doesn't have a partner, find them one # BUG: this line returns 'user' himself... :( other = db.Query(User).filter('partner =', None).get() if other: # connect users else: # no one to connect to! The idea is to find another User who doesn't have a partner, that isn't the User we already know. I've tried filter('key !=, user.key()), filter('__key__ !=, user.key()) and a couple others, and nothing returns another User who doesn't have a partner. filter('foo !=, user.key()) also returns nothing, for the record.

• Using Property Builtin with GAE Datastore's Model

  I want to make attributes of GAE Model properties. The reason is for cases like to turn the value into uppercase before storing it. For a plain Python class, I would do something like: Foo(db.Model): def get_attr(self): return self.something def set_attr(self, value): self.something = value.upper() if value != None else None attr = property(get_attr, set_attr) However, GAE Datastore have their own concept of Property class, I looked into the documentation and it seems that I could override get_value_for_datastore(model_instance) to achieve my goal. Nevertheless, I don't know what model_instance is and how to extract the corresponding field from it. Is overriding GAE Property classes the right way to provides getter/setter-like functionality? If so, how to do it? Added: One potential issue of overriding get_value_for_datastore that I think of is it might not get called before the object was put into datastore. Hence getting the attribute before storing the object would yield an incorrect value.

• How do I keep track of the session for each servlet request, until I use it? Singletons wont work?

  For each servlet request I get, I pass, perhaps, 10 methods before I am at where I need to check something in the session and I need the HttpSession. The only way I can get the HttpSession is from the HttpServletRequest, correct? How do I keep track of the session for each servlet request? Unfortuantly I cannot simple make a singleton (ex, SessionInformation.instance().getAttribute("name")) because that session would then be used over all requests. Is there a way to store the session globally for each request without having to pass it (or it's information) down all the methods just in case I need it?

Can anyone recommend a book(s) specifically aimed at designing and (hopefully) implementing an MMORPG? I don't need general how to design or how to code books. Maybe a really good generic games book, but I am not interested in 1st person shooters, I want to know what it takes to implement an MMORPG. Good books, maybe also good URLs.   If I have a pair of floats, is it any more efficient (computationally or storage-wise) to store them as a GeoPtProperty than it would be pickle the tuple and store it as a BlobProperty? If GeoPt is doing something more clever to keep multiple values in a single property, can it be leveraged for arbitrary data? Can I store the tuple ("Johnny", 5) in a single entity property in a similarly efficient manner?

  This is what I would like to do. I would like to load content dynamically. Everything except the actual content will be rendered by javascript. I will place all the require information in a javascript variable or array at the bottom of the page. Then I will use javascript to place the content in the designated area. These are the types of things I would like javascript to render: Login menu Header and logo info Side bar info Footer info Dialog popups Ads All of the MEAT content will not be rendered by javascript. I will use the backend server to put the content in html. My logic is that more of the real content will be in HTML and all the other things will be rendered by javascript. Will this help or hurt SEO?

• Misc. Naming: Can I place underscores instead of camel casing in modern languages?

  Hi! I would like to ask some kind of permission (I hope that doesn't sound strange) from the people who have influence on the naming conventions in modern languages like F#, Scala, etc. My problem is - I just can't read camelCased code and wish I could write underscored_names at least in my internal implementations (not in API interface). This applies to just everything - local var names, method names, params.. (Not class names I think) It seems that now the camel-casing is preferred for example for the names of object methods, but could that be not the only way? What would you say; Can I go with underscored names in languages like I mentioned (F#, Scala)?

• C# regex: negative lookahead fails with the single line option

  I am trying to figure out why a regex with negative look ahead fails when the "single line" option is turned on. Example (simplified): <source>Test 1</source> <source>Test 2</source> <target>Result 2</target> <source>Test 3</source> This: <source>(?!.*<source>)(.*?)</source>(?!\s*<target) will fail if the single line option is on, and will work if the single line option is off. For instance, this works (disables the single line option): (?-s:<source>(?!.*<source>)(.*?)</source>(?!\s*<target)) My understanding is that the single line mode simply allows the dot "." to match new lines, and I don't see why it would affect the expression above. Can anyone explain what I am missing here?

  I'm looking to create an on-site API reference for my framework and application. Basically, say I have a class file model.class.php: class Model extends Object { ... code here ... // Separates results into pages. // Returns Paginator object. final public function paginate($perpage = 10) { ... more code here ... } } and I want to be able to generate a reference that my developers can refer to quickly in order to know which functions are available to be called. They only need to see the comments directly above each function and the declaration line. Something like this (similar to a C++ header file): // Separates results into pages. // Returns Paginator object. final public function paginate($perpage = 10); I've done some research and this answer looked pretty good (using Reflection classes), however, I'm not sure how I can keep the comments in. Any ideas? EDIT: Sorry, but I want to keep the current comment formatting. Myself and the people who are working on the code hate the verbosity associated with PHPDocumentor. Not to mention a comment-rewrite of the entire project would take years, so I want to preserve just the // comments in plaintext.

• Subversion: Write protection for tagged directories

Does anybody know how i can protect this tagged directory from being accidentally modified? At the moment as a workaround i lock all files. But this sill means that the user with the lock can edit the files. Is there any better solution?

• What's the next steps for moving from appengine to full django?

  Hey guys, I'm super new to programming and I've been using appengine to help me learn python and general coding. I'm getting better quickly and I'm loving it all the way :) Appengine was awesome for allowing me to just dive into writing my app and getting something live that works (see http://www.7bks.com/). But I'm realising that the longer I continue to learn on appengine the more I'm constraining myself and locking myself into a single system. I'd like to move to developing on full django (since django looks super cool!). What are my next steps? To give you a feel for my level of knowledge: I'm not a unix user I'm not familiar with command line controls (I still use appengine/python completely via the appengine SDK) I've never programmed in anything other than python, anywhere other than appengine I know the word SQL, but don't know what MySQL is really or how to use it. So, specifically: What are the skills I need to learn to get up and running with full django/python? If I'm going to host somewhere else I suppose I'll need to learn some sysadmin type skills (maybe even unix?). Is there anywhere that offers easy hosting (like appengine) but that supports django? I hear such great things about heroku I'm considering switching to RoR and going there I appreciate that I'm likely not quite ready to move away from appengine just yet but I'm a fiercely passionate learner (http://www.7bks.com/blog/179001) and would love it if I knew all the steps I needed to learn so I could set about learning them. At the moment, I don't even know what the steps are I need to learn! Thank you very much.   Hi, i was wondering if anyone knows if theres a connection between what a navigation item is named and the page heading it goes to - does this have an impact on SEO? so for example, if i had in my navigation menu an item called About Us, but when you click it you come to a page with the heading Learn Who We Are (i.e. wrapped in [h1] heading tags) because there isnt an exact one-to-one match, is that a bad thing in terms of SEO? thanks
