  On Monday, Tom LaRock ( b /@sqlrockstar) presented his #MemeMonday topic as What #SQLFamily Means To Me . The #sqlfamily hash tag is a relatively new one, but is amazingly appropriate. I've been working with relational databases for almost 20 years, and for most of that time I've been the lone DBA. The only one to set things up, explain how things work, fix the problems, make it go faster, etc., etc., yadda, yadda, yadda. I enjoy being 'the guy', but at the same time it gets hard. • Working on someone else's code

  I have hardly a year's experience in coding. After I started working, most of the time I would be working on someone else's code, either adding new features over the existing ones or modifying the existing features. The guy who has written the actual code doesn't work in my company any more. I am having a hard time understanding his code and doing my tasks. Whenever I tried modifying the code, I have in some way messed with the working features. What all should I keep in mind, while working over someone else's code?

• Small-Scale Physics Engine

  I'm entering Android game development, and I already have a computer version of a game I want to publish. The thing is, I want to make this as good as it can be. With that said, I need a physics engine, really to only do one thing. That one thing is to make a parabolic movement of my main character as he's jumping in the air. Currently, my computer version simply makes the guy move up at a 45 degree angle, and as soon as it hits the ceiling, down at a 45 degree angle. I need a physics engine/library that would accomplish that, it has to be in java since that's my best language, it has to be 2D, and it has to be able to work on Android. Which physics engine/library could accomplish all of that?

• Do I create new site or add to existing site?

  Hi, Suppose, as an example, I have a website with the address, www.cool-gifts.com and I'm getting regular sales and its a worthwhile site, but no great fireworks. After research I find that there is a great market for '2nd hand stuff' and I'd like to serve that market. Would it be best to add '2nd hand stuff' as an additional category of gifts in my existing site....or, since the 2nd hand stuff is a market in itself, would I be better off investing time and energy bringing up a whole new site (www.used-stuff.com)? If I had employees and financial resources, it probably would be a no-brainer...start a new site. But, what if you are a small guy, with limited resources? So...new site....or add to existing site?

• How do you answer "Rate yourself" questions?

  Hi , I have been frequently asked questions like "Rate yourself in java" It goes like interviewer : Rate yourself in java on the scale of 10 me: 9 interviewer : Rate yourself in J2EE me : 8 .... But really I just come up with arbitrary numbers. Sure I know Java well , but what does it mean to say "9 out of 10" . I think it is a very subjective question, that does not make sense overall. The problem is ,if I say 9 , If I am not able to answer any question , the interviewer might think , "this guy just said 9" . On the other hand If I said 6 , there is a good chance the interviewer might think "He rates himself this low...not good" How do you respond to such questions ?

• Point domain to 3rd Party DNS

  I have a few of domain names and a rather simple website (small company type thing). We are in the process of having a web designer create a new website for us, but I don't want to give access to the control panel for the domain names (and have no way to limit it, it seems), while at the same time I don't want to be the go between guy for it the settings. Is there a way or a service for me to point the domain's at a 3rd party DNS system, that I can then give access for the web designer, without worry that he can find my personal info or try and transfer my domain out. • How to install Perl Switch.pm module required to build WebKit-GTK?

  I noticed that the perl version (5.14) shipped with 12.10 does not include the Switch.pm module needed while building WebKiT-GTK. Looking around on the internet I found few suggestions indicating that I should install something call p5-switch from ports. I have looked around and was not able to get this done. I am not a perl guy and have no idea where i can get this package. Can someone please help me as to Where to download the package for ubuntu 12.10 In case it is not a .deb, How do i install it.

• Humor in Documentation

  Is a small amount of lighthearted wording or humor acceptable in source code documentation? For example, I have an algorithm that has a message hop around a graph (network) until its path forms a cycle. When this happens it is removed from the queue of the node it last resided on which removes it from memory. I write that in a comment, and finish the comment with "Rest in peace, little guy". That serves very little documenting purpose, but it cheers me up a bit, and I imagine it might cheer up other people I'm working with as they read through the code. Is this an acceptable practice, or should my in-code documentation resemble as much as possible the speeches of 2004 United States presidential candidate John Kerry? ;-)

• UML Class diagrams with Java packages?

  I am trying to model in UML 2.0 a Java servlet application that has three classes Servlet class; essentially a main class that acts as the controller DatabaseLogic; contains methods for database operations XMLBuilder; builds an XML from a query result string The classes use a variety of packages from the Java library. I am unsure how to model this in UML Do I have to create a package and show which libraries are used for each individual class or can I just have one large package in the diagram with all the libraries showing which classes have dependencies on which. As per this diagram This is my first time working with java properly (im a C++ guy) Apart from being a bit messy , is this a correct UML representation of the system I described? Does a Package in UML mean the same as a Package in Java?

• Not getting paid for hours you've worked?

  So I was reading from a previous thread about App vs Game Development Here Which brought me to this site: Clicky Alot of it talked about devs working something like 85 hours a week.....and not getting paid overtime, or anything. Just getting paid for the 40 hours.....Is this normal for most software companies? I mean where I work im only an entry level guy....but I get overtime, and Anything over 40 hours is considered this. But it got me thinking "Holy crap" I could never do that. My FREE time is important to me. But is this commonplace in most software companies? or...more a rarity to certain types (game development, etc) Cause it got me scared! Like I understand having to put some extra hours in for a project......but like 80! thats ridiculous.

  During the winter Olympics, I had a little bet with Sondre Bjellås.  Sondre is the RD for Olso, Norway, a rising rock star in the .NET world and a very great guy.  The bet was that if Canada would win Gold against Norway in the man curling final, I would wear something funny and Norwegian like a Viking hat at Mix while Sondre would wear a Canadian jersey. • How to tackle a boss who thinks everybody in this world is wrong except him?

  I mean seriously, how do you tackle a guy who even changes our variable names (even though they are reasonable) and sends back the code (after review) like 4 times? I know for sure I'm not that bad a developer! So many times, he enforces his ideals, which are not even best practices in the industry! I point out to him whatever link I can find on the internet trying to prove my point, but in the end he uses his authority to shut us out. Sick and tired. Frustrated. Do I have any way out other than quitting the job?

• Is there a way to procedurally generate the history of a world?

  I am somewhat intrigued by the diagram found here representing 1800 years of cultural history in an imaginary world some guy created. This sort of thing would seem to have strong applications for game development, insofar as world design. It looks like he did this diagram by hand. What I'm interested in is seeing if there is a way to create this sort of diagram programatically. If you were tasked with generating diagrams in the style of the above from random values, how would you go about it? Are there any particular data structures or algorithms that you would consider?

• How could there still not be a mysqldb module for Python 3?

  This SO question is now more than two years old. MySQL is an incredibly popular database engine, Python is an incredibly popular programming language, and Python 3 has been officially released two years ago, and was available even before that. What's more, the whole mysqldb module is just a layer translating Python's db-api to MySQL's API. It's not that big of a library. I must be missing something here. How come almost* nobody in the entire open source community has spent the (I'm guessing) two weeks it takes to port this lib? Is Python 3 that unpopular? Is the combination of python and mysql not as common as I assume? Or maybe it's just a lot harder to port mysqldb than I assume? Anyone know the inside story on this? * Now I see that this guy has done it, which takes some of the wind out of my question, but it still seems to little and too late to make sense.

• This not having job, is driving me nuts!

  I had two jobs lined up (temporary but, hey they pay), one of which was in IT. A very low paying IT job for only 30 hours a week and only 3 weeks. At a large high tech company and a government (a not in my field job) temporary, paying a bit more, for little longer and for up to 40 hours a week. I was going to happily work my little self raged for the next 3 weeks. Guess what, the IT job fell thru and I now feel so let down. This I felt was my chance to get back in to IT, even if it was only for few weeks and maybe get note-us as hard working IT guy. I still have the other job but, let me add that there is no chance that it will turn in to something longer (I have been told that point blank). As I said this is nuts.

  I was always told I was left brained and could not draw. And I bought into that view. Somewhere down the road years ago I did learn to play guitar and to play by ear at that.  Now that’s not all left brained so my right brain must be working.  About a year ago, my good friend Billy Hollis turned me own to a book by Betty Edwards (http://www.drawright.com/).  I started reading this and soon I found my self drawing on napkins in restaurants while we were waiting on food and at many other times too.  Dang’d if I could not draw! • Can I customize the appearance of the Ubuntu Software Center?

  I just opened software-center for the first time since ages(am an apt-get kinda guy) an my first taught was, Meh. Design of it, is not my only issue! the overall look and feel is a bit, Meh. It looks like everything has been thrown in to a direction, and thats it. It works! But it looks, Meh. My question is: Will there be a new version of the Ubuntu software-center that introduces a new design? (Or can i edit a software-center.css file and make something myself?)

• How forgiving do you need to be on new employees?

  Recently we have a new developer in our team. We are getting him up to speed and he is picking it all up quite fast, but a new developer means new (foreign) coding styles and ways to solve things. It feels kinda petty to start whining about coding styles at the first three classes he codes, but how forgiving are you guys when dealing with new developers? Do you let them muddle on, and point it out later? Or do you wield the scepter of intolerance immediately? When do you draw the line, or if not, why not? P.S. • Trying to Organise a Software Craftsman Pilgrimage

  As I have previously written, I am trying to organise a software craftsman pilgrimage. The idea is to donate some time working with quality developers so that we learn from each other. To be honest I am also trying to be the worst. “Always be the worst guy in every band you’re in.” Pat Metheny I ended up posting a message to both the software craftsmanship group and the Seattle Alt.NET group and I got a good response from both. I have had discussions with people based in: Seattle, New York, Long Island, Austin and Chicago. Over the next week I have to juggle my schedule and confirm the company(s) I will be spending time with, but the good news is it seems that I will not be left hanging.

• Solo .NET Programmer moving to a team

  I've been a solo .NET programmer for a small startup for the last 8 years. I've put together some pretty decent software, and I always strived to better myself and conform to best practices, including source control (SVN/TFS). I worked very closely with a team of engineers of other disciplines, but when it came down to the software I was the only one programming. I love the craft of programming and love learning new things to sharpen my tools. In 2 weeks I will be starting a new job in a team of 20 .NET developers. My position will be mid-level, and I will be working under some programmers with incredibly impressive backgrounds. Again, the team aspect of development will be new to me, so I'm looking for some general "new guy" tips that will help me be as effective and easy to get along with as possible from the get-go. Anything goes, including high level tips, and small day-to-day things about communication. Thanks for any and all input!
