• Failure to Boot 12.04 on HP AMD Dual Core. Rescue Mode doesn't even come up

  I have 12.04 installed on HP 64 bit dual core AMD laptop.. worked great until about 1-2 months ago.. now takes 1/2 hour to 25 hours to boot if it ever does. A minor number of times I get the HP logo with hash lines on screen and it just hangs... When it finally boots 95% it will run until I turn it off days later to see if any of the upgrades fixed the problem. Currently, if it boots, it is random.. .left on over night .. 2 nights ago and came back to a HP logo with Hash Lines horizontal across the screen.. frozen.. rebooted back to black screen.. no HP logo... Most often when it does boot.. no HP logo.. just cursor shows up.. and then I know it will finally load... computer has been made worthless and it is my work computer..HELP PLEASE... Rescue Mode can't be invoked.. computer doesnt respond.. has shown up 3 times in about 100 and when I have tried it... 1 time it resulted in a boot up but then failed in a couple hours.

• PowerShell & SQL Compare

  Just a quick blog post to share a couple of scripts for using PowerShell to call SQL Compare. This is an example from my session at SQL in the City on setting up a sandbox development process. This just runs a compare between a set of scripts and a database and deploys it. set-Location “c:\Program Files (x86)\Red Gate\SQL Compare 10\”; ./sqlcompare /s2:DOJO /db2:MovieManagement_Sandbox /sourcecontrol1 /vu1:grant /vp1:12345 /r1:HEAD /sfx:scripts.xml /sync /mfx:migrations.xml /verbose; I would not recommend using the /verbose output for real automation, but I’m showing off how the tool works. This particular script does a compare straight from source control to a database on my server. You can use variables where I’ve hard coded. That’s it. Works great. Just wanted to share it out there. I have others that I’ll track down and put up here.

• Jersey 1.8 is released

  On the last Friday, we have released the 1.8 version of Jersey, the open source, production quality, reference implementation of JAX-RS. The JAX-RS 1.1 specification is available at the JCP web site and also available in non-normative HTML here. For an overview of JAX-RS features read the Jersey user guide. To get started with Jersey read the getting started section of that guide. To understand more about what Jersey depends on read the dependencies section of that guide. See change log here. This, 1.8, version of Jersey is going to be integrated into GlassFish 3.1.1 and contains bug fixes mainly. The most important fix from this perspective is included in the JAX-RS/EJB integration layer. It is now possible to implement JAX-RS resources as EJB Session beans, which implement local and/or remote interfaces. This functionality was broken in previous releases. Another great addition should come into the client space, where Pavel has already done some preparation in the client API (including some breaking changes there) for the non-blocking asynchronous client feature. The implementation is already part of the experimental Jersey space and should be included as part of the stable Jersey bits in some of the coming releases. • Bright Minds in Singapore: Oracle Graduate Hiring

   Last week I was in Singapore and had the opportunity to take part in our graduate interviewing that we are currently undertaking as part of our ASEAN hiring. I always feel fortunate to get the chance to meet and talk with students in the APAC region and taking time to meet some of the students we interviewed in Singapore last week is no exception. The excitement and enthusiasm of many of the students that I spoke to last week really stands out but what really brought some of them to the forefront for me was their creative ways of thinking and the level of professionalism that I saw in the students. Some of the presentation and communication skills that I saw displayed would rival experienced IT Consultants in the industry.  We still have more interviews to follow up from last week, but I am confident that of the students we had the chance to meet last week some of them will go on to have bright and successful careers here at Oracle.  To all the students that came in and spent the day with us, I want to thank you for giving us your time and for sharing your thoughts and ideas with us. From a business perspective I think you all will go on and do great things and from a personal stand point I enjoyed many of the conversations I had and feel lucky to meet with you. Best of luck with the remainder of your interviews and I hope to see some of you in the halls on my next visit to Singapore.

• What makes a person contribute to opensource? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Why develop free, open source programs? [closed] 14 answers I know this is controversial, but.. There are many great projects like Apache Webserver or Hadoop provided by the OpenSource Community. I often feel that the people that actually benefit (financially), from these projects are developers like me, sitting in India, working for MNCs, who has never contributed anything to any opensource project so far, but earn handsomely due to my basic googling skills & the community provided documentation. Is it fair ? I mean no other industry in the world face such dilemma.Those who work get paid. I mean I almost am starting to feel guilty of taking such advantage of some thing that I contribute nothing to. I had to do projects every semester in college (we could choose projects) & I used to enjoy coding then. I want to contribute. But contributing to opensource is not a task [unlike college or office work]. And life is so busy .. Are all these opensource contributors really jobless ?[just kidding..] Could someone please share some personal experiences on how you guys started contributing or any advice on why I should contribute or what attitude in life makes you keep aside time or is it that you just crazly love writing code or is it that you just love to see your name in the contributors list or do you have a local coding group you hang out with ? Do you feel I am destined to do this ? This is my part of contributing back to the world ? Whats that basic mentality that make you guys want to contribute, while I just want to finish my work and go home. What makes you guys tick ?

  The WebLogic console timeout is a great feature for security, yet a horrible feature during development.  Logging in over and over again gets to be annoying.  This is very easy to change, but I would never do this on a production system!   Find the WebLogic consoleapp weblogic.xml file.  This is typically in your WL_HOME/server/lib/consoleapp/webapp/WEB-INF/ directory. • Office design and layout for agile development

  (moved from stackoverflow) I have found lot of discussions here on about which keyboard, desk, light or colored background is best - but I can't find one addressing the layout of the whole office. We are a company with about 20 employees moving to a new place, something larger. There are two main development practices going on here with regular combination, the back end people often needing to work with the mobile people to arrange web services. There are about twice as many back end people as mobile people. About half of the back end developers are working on-site at any time and while they are almost never all in the office at once at least 5-10 spaces need to be provided - so most of the time the two groups are about equal. We have the chance to arrange desks, partitions and possibly even walls to make the space good. There won't be cash for dot-com frills like catering or massages but now's the time to be planning to avoid ending up with a bunch of desks in a long line. Joel on Software's Bionic Office is an article I've remembered from way back and it has some good ideas but I* (and more importantly the company's owners) are not completely sold on the privacy idea in an environment where we are supposed to be collaborating. This is another great link - The Ultimate Software Development Office Layout - I hadn't even remembered enclosed meeting rooms until reading this. Does the private office stand in the way of agile development? Is the scrum enough forced contact and if you need to bug someone you should need to get up and knock on their door? What design layouts can you point to and why would you recommend them? *I'm not against closed offices at all but would be happy if some other solution can do just as well. If it can't... well, that's what this question is all about.

• ubi-partman failed with exit code 10 during 12.10 fresh install

  ive been trying to install ubuntu 12.10 on my acer aspire one 534h,using an iso from the official site and a 16gb flash drive using unetbootin. my aa1 is running factory settings (xp). it will boot fine from the usb, but the installation throws the error in the title after choosing my wifi options, and contineus to give the error after every subsequent step. after trying to complete the installation ingoring the error, it hangs on the ask ubuntu screen. ive tried reformatting and reflashing (sorry, heavy android user) ubuntu to the flash drive, to no avail... do i need to format somthing else, or is it something to do with th Hdd and RAID drives? ive looked in my BIOS and found nothing related. only the option for sata or ide... any help would be great, as ive been working at this all day... edit: the error message was ubi-partman has failed with exit code 10. see (gave a directory) for more info. it then informed me that if i continued the install could be incomplete or completly broken. not sure abouth the wording in the second part, but the error is word for word... thank you.

• Compiz slow under proprietary nvidia driver

  Hi! I am using Ubuntu 10.10 and have problem with proprietary nvidia driver for my GeForce GTS 250. I have issue with poor Compiz performance. And there is also open-source "noueau" driver. Proprietary: I tried many versions but neither works fast on desktop. This means 30 FPS without heavy effects. Currently I am using version 270.18. Even normal desktop use feels bad (moving windows) In games (and 3D benchmark) it is really good! (Unigine Heaven works good!) Open-source "nouveau": Very fast on desktop with heavy effects (blur, ...). I have 300 FPS and more, even in Expo mode. Games were good but not as good as prop. And driver causes xorg to crash even the latest (ppa:xorg-edgers/nouveau), so I switched back to proprietary. I also have computer with Ubuntu 10.04, GeForce 8600GT and drivers around 185.x and Compiz works great there. There is similar question Nvidia proprietary driver performance in 10.10 Which version of nvidia (prop) driver is fast in Compiz in Ubuntu 10.10? How do you install a specific version of nvidia driver? Is it the case that each newer driver works slower on compiz?

• How can I tag sequences inside videos?

  For example, let's say I find a sequence in a WWDC session (Apple videos) that explains a technical point very well. I would like to be able to store the exact range in the video, tag it with keywords, and manage all that information. And when I want to share this information, I could simply export to a plain English sentence: "Have a look at the video named …". It would be great to be able to launch a video player for local videos and go straight to the beginning of the sequence.

  This is the code I am currently using, and it works great, except for the strafe always causes the camera to move along the X axis which is not relative to the direction in which the camera is actually facing. • Transfer nearly an entire file system to a fresh install as smoothly as possible

  I've got a friend who needs his computer working in just a few hours. His files are safe, however, he managed to corrupt his main install of Windows 7. My plan is to go in with a Linux disk, copy his C:\ do a backup drive I've got and then reinstall. Restoring many of his files will be pretty simple (such as documents and such), however, things such as applications won't transfer as easily. Is there any easy way to transfer applications such as MS Office (which he needs in the morning) or other commercial software packages without having to go through the hassle of locating the keys and reinstalling them completely? I don't think just moving them over will work just because of the fact that I'm sure much of that is stored in the registry (validation stuff and such). Anyways, quick responses would be super nice! Also, additional help would be great!

• Lossless cutting of MPEG TS files in Windows

  I have several HD video files in transport stream (.ts) format, recorded with my satellite receiver. I want to cut them, as in simply remove a few minutes from the beginning, the end and sometimes a few minutes in the middle of it (remove early start of recordings, late ends and, for some seldom files, the ads). What is a good, ideally but not necessarily free, software with a GUI to do this? Best would be something where you could select points on a timeline and simply cut the elements out. As a resulting file, just the same .ts format would be great, but I could also live with putting the video contents into another container, as long as the video is NOT re-encoded / transcoded. The files have additional audio streams and subtitles. These should be retained in the process. My OS is Windows.

• Firefox Not responding - Windows 7

  Have just upgraded from Vista to Win7 (32 bit). On vista Firefox worked great. I am using 3.5.6 version. 2GB RAM. In windows 7 however whenever i click on a link, field or tab within the browser or various other places within firefox 'Not Responding' flashes on the title bar. Most of the time i have to click 2 or 3 times to get any link or whatever to work which is very annoying. Any ideas? Can't find anything obvious on google but notice other people get Not Responding messages a lot with various apps. Chrome Plus seems to be fine.

  Hi All! i know this is not a properly code question, but who of you don't use an FTP client!? ;-) Ok my problem is that my FTP work great, exept when i upload files on a particular client server! on this server happen that some files are uploaded fine and others not, they stop while uploading at half of it's size, then this error is displayed: 530 Sorry, the maximum number of clients (4) from your host are already connected. Unable to make a connection. Please try again. Obviously this is not true, i'm the only one that is uploading! Anyone had the same experience with this!? PS: i have tried many different FTP, all display the same error or just hung up! Thank's

• RHN Satellite / Spacewalk custom channels, best practice?

  Hi, I'm currently setting up RHN Satellite, and all works well. I'm in the process of creating custom channels, since we have certain software which should be available for all nodes of satellite, e.g. puppet, facter, subversion, php (newer version than present in base). I've tried to find documentation on best practices on this. How should they be set up, how to handle different arch, how to handle noarch packages. How to sync updates to dependencies when updating a custom package in a custom channel (e.g. php is updated, how to fetch all updated dependencies). The channel management documentation from RHEL (http://www.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Network_Satellite/5.3/Channel_Management_Guide/html/Channel_Management_Guide-Custom_Channel_and_Package_Management.html) doesn't provide me with enough information on how to solve any of theese issues. All tips, tricks and information regarding this would be great!

• Wessty: Live with HTML 5 (2011 Speaker Tour)

  That’s right: Wessty is on tour. Okay, the banner and the tour is a little over the top, but I am really excited about my upcoming speaking engagements to spread the word about HTML 5! I have already kicked off the tour with the Winnipeg Code Camp last weekend with the world premiere of HTML 5 for .NET Pro presentation, and the turn out fantastic. It was the last presentation of the day, but we still had some great questions about the new standard and got to see how HTML 5 can fit into .NET web applications today. In any case, above you can see the confirmed presentations that I will be doing so far in 2011, but there are a few more events that I have heard about that I hope to add to that list. Ultimately, expect that list to be updated over the course of the year as the year is young and there are plenty of conferences coming up! Presentation Resources As the tour continues, I will be posting the slides and the source code for the demonstrations up here on my site. They will be free of charge and give you the chance to review the demos and hopefully take advantage of some of the cool things you see in the presentations. • Devoxx 2011 Started Today

  Devoxx 2011, organized by Java user group in Belgium, is the biggest Java conference in Europe. The first two University Days set the tone for the weeklong conference with its in-depth technical sessions lead by luminaries from the Java community and industry experts. Each day is a great mix of 3 hour sessions and hands-on labs, 30 minute Tools-in-Action sessions giving tips for faster and better application development and the traditional Birds-of-a-Feather sessions in the evening. • Why is cpu power management not working in Server 2012 with Hyper-V?

  We've been using Server2008R2 with Hyper-V for a couple of years now and chose it at the time because of its ability to make use of Intel SpeedStep and AMD PowerNow! Now with Server 2012 and Hyper-V V3, all power management abilities seem to be gone. The CPUs are always at full speed and our servers need twice the energy as before while idling. (Yes, the CPU P-states are enabled in the BIOS) Is this by design? Is there a workaround to enable cpu power management again? Despite the great new features of Hyper-V 3, this would be a show-stopper for us since we are very concerned about energy consumption.
