  • How can I improve my real-time behavior in multi-threaded app using pthreads and condition variables

    I have a multi-threaded application that is using pthreads. I have a mutex() lock and condition variables(). There are two threads, one thread is producing data for the second thread, a worker, which is trying to process the produced data in a real time fashion such that one chuck is processed as close to the elapsing of a fixed time period as possible. This works pretty well, however, occasionally when the producer thread releases the condition upon which the worker is waiting, a delay of up to almost a whole second is seen before the worker thread gets control and executes again. I know this because right before the producer releases the condition upon which the worker is waiting, it does a chuck of processing for the worker if it is time to process another chuck, then immediately upon receiving the condition in the worker thread, it also does a chuck of processing if it is time to process another chuck. In this later case, I am seeing that I am late processing the chuck many times. I'd like to eliminate this lost efficiency and do what I can to keep the chucks ticking away as close to possible to the desired frequency. Is there anything I can do to reduce the delay between the release condition from the producer and the detection that that condition is released such that the worker resumes processing? For example, would it help for the producer to call something to force itself to be context switched out? Bottom line is the worker has to wait each time it asks the producer to create work for itself so that the producer can muck with the worker's data structures before telling the worker it is ready to run in parallel again. This period of exclusive access by the producer is meant to be short, but during this period, I am also checking for real-time work to be done by the producer on behalf of the worker while the producer has exclusive access. Somehow my hand off back to running in parallel again results in significant delay occasionally that I would like to avoid. Please suggest how this might be best accomplished.

  • How to implement Master-Detail with Multi-Selection in WPF?

    Hi, I plan to create a typical Master-Detail scenario, i.e. a collection of items displayed in a ListView via DataBinding to an ICollectionView, and details about the selected item in a separate group of controls (TextBoxes, NumUpDowns...). No problem so far, actually I have already implemented a pretty similar scenario in an older project. However, it should be possible to select multiple items in the ListView and get the appropriate shared values displayed in the detail view. This means, if all selected items have the same value for a property, this value should be displayed in the detail view. If they do not share the same value, the corresponding control should provide some visual clue for the user indicating this, and no value should be displayed (or an "undefined" state in a CheckBox for example). Now, if the user edits the value, this change should be applied to all selected items. Further requirements are: MVVM compatibility (i.e. not too much code-behind) Extendability (new properties/types can be added later on) Does anyone have experience with such a scenario? Actually, I think this should be a very common scenario. However, I could not find any details on that topic anywhere. Thanks! gehho. PS: In the older project mentioned above, I had a solution using a subclass of the ViewModel which handles the special case of multi-selection. It checked all selected items for equality and returned the appropriate values. However, this approach had some drawbacks and somehow seemed like a hack because (besides other smelly things) it was necessary to break the synchronization between the ListView and the detail view and handle it manually.

  • Path to XML DTD for DBUnit in multi-module Java/Maven project?

    I have a multi-module maven project. Within the persist module I have a number of XML files data files that reference a DTD: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE myapp-data SYSTEM "myapp-data.dtd" > <dataset> .....omitted for brevity.... </dataset> The DTD is stored in the same directory with the XML files and even Eclipse reports these XML files as valid. However, when I run the application, the DBUnit FlatXMLDataSet throws a FileNotFound exception because it cannot located the DTD. It is apparently looking for the DTD in the root project directory (e.g. myproject/). I would have expected it to look for the DTD in the same directory as the XML file itself (e.g. myproject/persist/target/test-data). Looking at the DBUnit source code, it has this to say about it "Relative DOCTYPE uri are resolved from the current working dicrectory." What's a good way to fix this?

  • What are some of the core principles needed to master Multi threading using Delphi?

    I am kind of new to programming in general (about 8 months with on and off in delphi and a little python here and there) and I am in the process of buying some books. I am interested in learning about concurrent programming and building multi threaded apps using Delphi. Whenever I do a search for "multithreading delphi" or "delphi multithreading tutorial" I seem to get conflicting results as some of the stuff is about using certain libraries (omnithread library) and other stuff seems to be more geared towards programmers with more experience. I have studied quite a few books on delphi and for the most part they seem to kind of skim the surface and not really go into depth on the subject. I have a friend who is a programmer (he uses c++) who recommends I learn what is actually going on with the underlying system when using threads as opposed to jumping into how to actually implement them in my programs first. On amazon.com there are quite a few books on concurrent programming but none of them seem to be made with Delphi in mind. Basically I need to know what are the main things I should be focused on learning before jumping into using threads, if I can/should attempt to learn them using books that are not specifically aimed at delphi developers (don't want to confuse myself reading books with a bunch of code examples in other languages right now) and if there are any reliable resources/books on the subject that anyone here could recommend.   • Can we solve the table row background image problem, in chrome, in multi celled tables??

    It is frequently asked – but I haven’t seen a good answer yet (and I looked). If you set a background image in CSS to a table row- the image will repeat itself in every cell. If you set the position: relative (for the row) and set the background-image: none (for the cells) it solves the problem on IE but not on chrome! I can't use background positioning since there are many calls and their size varies. (And the picture is not symmetrical- It's a fade out from one side. Anybody?? Example for the css code : tr { height: 30px; position:relative;} tr.green {background: url('green_30.png') no-repeat left top;} tr.orange {background: url('oranger_30.png') no-repeat left top;} tr.red {background: url('red_30.png') no-repeat left top;} td {background-image:none;} The HTML is basic - A multi cell table. The goal is to have different colors fade into every row, but it could be any non-pattern image.

  • How can I use multi-threading with a "for" or "foreach" loop?

    I am trying to run the for loop in a separate thread so that the UI should be responsive and the progress bar is visible. The problem is that I don't know how to do that :). In this code, the process starts in a separate thread, but the next part of the code is executed at the same time. The messageBox is displayed and the results are never returned (e.g. the listbox's selected index property is never set). It doesn't work even if I use, "taskEx.delay()".   • What's the best way to handle layout issues with multi-language support in WPF/XAML?

    I'm creating a standalone WPF app with multi-language support. I've found some great resources (mostly on SO) on how to store and access the strings as needed. This part is pretty straightforward and doable, but I'm fuzzy on how to take care of screen layout issues. I'm using some custom images to skin up my app for buttons, etc. For instance, here's a button with some text within: <Button Canvas.Left="33" Canvas.Top="484" Style="{StaticResource SmallButtonBase}"> <TextBlock FontSize="20" FontWeight="Bold" TextAlignment="Center" FontFamily="Helvetica"> Enter </TextBlock> </Button> Now here is the same button with text from another language: <Button Canvas.Left="33" Canvas.Top="484" Style="{StaticResource SmallButtonBase}"> <TextBlock FontSize="20" FontWeight="Bold" TextAlignment="Center" FontFamily="Helvetica"> Enterenschtein </TextBlock> </Button> So my question is: What is a good method to prevent this "overflow" situation. I'd like to have XAML take care of any font resizing or indenting that is needed automatically so that I don't have to tweak the UI for each language I'm supporting. Any insight is appreciated!

    I have a method that returns an array (string[]) and I'm trying to pass this array of strings into an Action Link so that it will create a query string similar to: /Controller/Action?str=val1&str=val2&str=val3...etc But when I pass new { str = GetStringArray() } I get the following url: /Controller/Action?str=System.String%5B%5D So basically it's taking my string[] and running .ToString() on it to get the value. Any ideas? Thanks!

I've found a lot on Google, but all seem to have their own issues and I haven't been able to get any of them to work. I just need to split a string like: "word:doc,txt,docx" into an array based on ':'. The result would be ['word', 'doc,txt,docx']. Does anyone have a function that they know works? Thank you

The problem with using an array or standard list is that they can only hold Integer.MAX_VALUE number of entries. How would you work around this limitations? A whole new class/interface? A wrapper for list? another data type entirely?

    OK so for background I've only been using Java for a little more than a week and I am making a basic GUI "Recipe Book" application just to test out some of the techniques I've learned. Currently I'm working on the "Add New Recipe" page that allows the user to make a new recipe by adding ingredients one at a time. The ingredients have 3 attributes: Name, amount, and unit (like cups, oz, etc) that come from two text fields and a combo box respectively. The 3 values are stores as strings to a String array that represents the ingredient, then the arrays are stored in a vector that holds all of the ingredients for one recipe. When an ingredient is added, the user first types in the 3 necessary values into empty boxes/combo box dropdown and then clicks "Add Ingredient".     I'm trying to include something at the end of the comments array for a WordPress plugin. I currently have add_filter('comments_array', 'my_function'), where my_function($comments='') is something along the lines of: my_function($comments='') { echo 'something'; return $comments; } I obviously can't return the comments first, and echoing them doesn't work because $comments is a multi-dimensional array. Is there some way I can print the WordPress comments and then append something to them? Thanks.
