  Background: There are a lot of great tutorials and "tricks" pages for Vim, but one thing that is very difficult is to find specific instructions on how to do some arbitrary thing that one can easily do in one's own familiar text editor IDE. Therefore I am asking for step by step instructions on how you I would do something in Vim that I already know how to do in other text editors. I like Vim and the great built-in help and numerous on-line tutorials, but sometimes a human has to break down and ask another human. • How to determine Scale of Line Graph based on Pixels/Height?

  I have a problem due to my terrible math abilities, that I cannot figure out how to scale a graph based on the maximum and minimum values so that the whole graph will fit onto the graph-area (400x420) without parts of it being off the screen (based on a given equation by user). Let's say I have this code, and it automatically draws squares and then the line graph based on these values. • In CSS, how to not float a 300px wide Div to the next line?

  Say, there is a bar that is styled at the bottom of the viewport, using position: fixed; bottom: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height 50px; overflow: hidden and then there are 4 Divs inside it, each one floated to the left. Each Div is about 300px wide or can be more (depending on the content) Now, when the window is 1200 pixel wide, and we see all 4 Divs, but when the window is resize to be 1180 pixel wide (just 20 pixels less), then the whole 300px wide Div will disappear, because it is "floated" to the next line. So how can this be made so that, the Div will stay there and showing 280px of itself, rather than totally disappear? By the way, white-space: nowrap won't work as that probably has to do with not wrapping inline content. I was thinking of putting another Div inside this Div, having a fixed width of 1200px or 2000px, so that all Divs will float on the same level in this inner Div, and the outer Div will cut it off with the overflow: hidden. But this seems more like a hack... since the wide of all those Divs can be dynamic, and setting a fixed width of 1200px or 2000px seems like too much of a hack.

Alright, I don't want to get picky here, but is my reader open or closed?

  I recently configured an EC2 instance with a Git deployment workflow that resembles Heroku, but I can't seem to figure out how Heroku prevents the Git post-receive hook from outputting 'remote:' on each line. • Tying PyQt4 QAction triggered() to local class callable doesn't seem to work. How to debug this?

  I create this object when I want to create a QAction. I then add this QAction to a menu: class ActionObject(object): def __init__(self, owner, command): action = QtGui.QAction(command.name, owner) self.action = action self.command = command action.setShortcut(command.shortcut) action.setStatusTip(command.name) QtCore.QObject.connect(action, QtCore.SIGNAL('triggered()'), self.triggered) def triggered(self): print("got triggered " + self.command.id + " " + repr(checked)) Unfortunately, when the menu item is selected, the 'triggered' function is not called. QtCore.QObject.connect() returns True. Nothing is printed on the console to indicate that anything is wrong, and no exception is thrown. How can I debug this? (or, what am I doing wrong?)

• CSS- How to align background image over bottom border line? Jsfiddle included

  I have an image I am trying to display over the top of a bottom border, but it is being arranged behind the bottom border element (in this example, named "divider"), and I can't get it to align correctly. I would like the image to be displayed in the middle of the the border element and over the top of it. Vertically, I am trying to get the 1px line on the left and right side of the image to align with the 1px border to appear as if it is one element. • Is it a wise decision to go from dev to third line/Tier 3 dev support?

  Hi, I am an experienced, mid-level developer. However, I recently spotted a job for a company which is small but has a lot of emphasis on training(beyond the basic technical training, but also mentoring, leadership training, etc). The role is 3rd line so still very technical. It's in app support so it's post implementation development rather than pure out-and-out development like I do now (or don't, as the senior devs do all of the interesting work). However, and this is the question - is this sort of career move common? Also, wouldn't a tech support role be a big shock to the system because I've never dealt with customers? I therefore think it's a bad move? Working in dev, I am used to the lack of customer contact and it is all filtered through by my manager. But in tech support, contacting customers/rude customers could be scary. I don't mind fixing other people's mistakes (better than me making mistakes!) and doing post-implementation dev for production systems (will give me a lot of discipline), and I do get bored sitting in the same place looking/talking to the same people in suits (I work in a corporate environment). The company puts A LOT of emphasis on training and prospects, which I don't get in the current (big) company I work at. Any advice on how to handle tech support is appreciated! Thanks

• Regular Expressions, avoiding HTML tags in PHP

  I have actually seen this question quite a bit here, but none of them are exactly what I want... Lets say I have the following phrase: Line 1 - This is a TEST phrase. Line 2 - This is a <img src="TEST" /> image. Line 3 - This is a <a href="somelink/TEST">TEST</a> link. Okay, simple right? I am trying the following code: $linkPin = '#(\b)TEST(\b)(?![^<]*>)#i'; $linkRpl = '$1<a href="newurl">TEST</a>$2'; $html = preg_replace($linkPin, $linkRpl, $html); As you can see, it takes the word TEST, and replaces it with a link to test. The regular expression I am using right now works good to avoid replacing the TEST in line 2, it also avoids replacing the TEST in the href of line 3. However, it still replaces the text encapsulated within the tag on line 3 and I end up with: Line 1 - This is a <a href="newurl">TEST</a> phrase. Line 2 - This is a <img src="TEST" /> image. Line 3 - This is a <a href="somelink/TEST"><a href="newurl">TEST</a></a> link. This I do not want as it creates bad code in line 3. I want to not only ignore matches inside of a tag, but also encapsulated by them. (remember to keep note of the / in line 2)

  Hi, I'm writing a program for some data entry I have to periodically do. I have begun testing a few things that the program will have to do but i'm not sure about this part. What i need this part to do is: read a .txt file of data take the first 12 characters from each line take the first 12 characters from each line of the data that has been entered in a multi-line text box compare the two lists line by line if one of the 12 character blocks from the multi-line text box match one of the blocks in the .txt file then overwrite that entire line (only 17 characters in total) if one of the 12 character blocks from the multi-line text box DO NOT match any of the blocks in the.txt file then append that entire line to the file thats all it has to do. i'll do an example: TXT FILE: G01:78:08:32 JG05 G08:80:93:10 JG02 G28:58:29:28 JG04 MULTI-LINE TEXT BOX: G01:78:08:32 JG06 G28:58:29:28 JG03 G32:10:18:14 JG01 G32:18:50:78 JG07 RESULTING TXT FILE: G01:78:08:32 JG06 G08:80:93:10 JG02 G28:58:29:28 JG03 G32:10:18:14 JG01 G32:18:50:78 JG07 as you can see lines 1 and 3 were overwriten, line 2 was left alone as it did not match any blocks in the text box, lines 4 and 5 were appended to the file. thats all i want it to do. • How to use strtok in C properly so there is no memory leak?

  I am somewhat confused by what happens when you call strtok on a char pointer in C. I know that it modifies the contents of the string, so if I call strtok on a variable named 'line', its content will change. Assume I follow the bellow approach: void function myFunc(char* line) { // get a pointer to the original memory block char* garbageLine = line; // Do some work // Call strtok on 'line' multiple times until it returns NULL // Do more work free(garbageLine); } Further assume that 'line' is malloced before it is passed to myFunc. Am I supposed to free the original string after using strtok or does it do the job for us? Also, what happens if 'line' is not malloced and I attempt to use the function above? Is it safer to do the following instead? (Assume the programmer won't call free if he knows the line is not malloced) Invocation char* garbageLine = line; myFunc(line); free(garbageLine); Function definition void function myFunc(char* line) { // Do some work // Call strtok on 'line' multiple times until it returns NULL // Do more work }

• Changing commas within quotes

  I am trying to read the data in a text file which is separated by commas. My problem, is that one of my data pieces has a comma within it. An example of what the text file looks like is: a, b, "c, d", e, f. I am not that experienced with South and I haven't met this error before. The only helpful mention I can find online about this error is for pre-0.7 I think and I am on South 0.7. • Mercurial over ssh client and server on Windows

  I'm trying to configure Mercurial for use with both a windows server (freeSSHd) and client (both command line and TortoiseHG). I'm using the most recent versions of everything... all downloaded in the past few days. Using public key auth, I have been able to get connected to the server and I'm able to use plink to execute "hg version" and get a response, but when I try to clone a repository from the ssh server the command appears to hang. Running with -v yields: hg -v clone ssh://<username>@<server>//hg/repositoryA testRepositoryA running "plink.exe -i "<path to private key file>" <username>@<server> "hg -R /hg/repositoryA serve --stdio"" with nothing more forthcoming. Running the hg serve command directly on the server yields an apparently responsive Mercurial server, but the clients do not seem to make any further requests. Running "hg serve" in the repository directory and cloning over http works perfectly. What should I be looking for to help debug this? Is there something the clients (hg and TortoiseHG) aren't sending to continue the request stream? Additional Information: If I change to an invalid repository on the target machine, the appropriate error is displayed, so it does appear that the remote hg is running and correctly evaluating the path.   I've set-up FileZilla server a Windows 2008 Machine, I then created the user, password and added a share folder which I set to Home Directory. I then connect to the server from the client computer Status: Connecting to {IP} Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message... Response: 220-Welcome To {NAME} FTP Response: 220 {DOMAIN} Command: USER {USER} Response: 331 Password required for {USER} Command: PASS ********* Response: 230 Logged on Status: Connected Status: Retrieving directory listing... Command: PWD Response: 257 "/" is current directory. Command: TYPE I Response: 200 Type set to I Command: PASV Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode ({}DATA) Command: MLSD The connection works fine, however no remote directory is selected, it shows as "/" however uploading any file fails. Any suggestions on how to debug this more?
