  • Repair snapped USB flash drive

    - by Richard Slater
I have a USB Flash Drive that has had the USB connector snapped away from the circuit board. In the past I have had great sucess with soldering the connector back to the circuit board with 4 solid core wires. Unfortunatly this particular device shows up as "Unknown Device" in device manager and displays 0ma power usage. Giving a closer look at the circuit board it appears that the Data + connector has come away from the PCB. Which would explain why it is not recognised. Is there any practicable way of lifting the data from the device? larger version

  • How to lock the c prompt?

    - by allindal
Is there anyway to lock the command prompt? I need my computer to require a password to use the command prompt. I lock the workstation occasionally but sometimes I forget and if I could just prevent my roommate from doing the "c: net user user *" to change my password it would be great. I do not want to have to use the rundll.32 user command with script to automatically lock the computer. Just a way to lock the c prompt. Sorry for not saying this earlier, I'm running a vista 32bit Asus gene II motherboard with a core i7 CPU

  • What settings to use for fastest reloading of a MySQL backup?

    - by Alex R
I have a MySQL database which dumps to a 3.5 GB backup (mysqldump) in about 10 minutes. But reloading this backup on a standby / test server takes upwards of 12 hours. What are some settings that would maximize reloading performance? The most promising appear to be innodb_buffer_pool_size, innodb_additional_mem_pool_size, and innodb_log_buffer_size... but I'm reaching the limits of my trial-and-error approach. Which of these settings "should" be the most important? Through trial-and-error I was not able to get more than 70% CPU utilization and 63% memory utilization. I'd like both at 100% during a reload. All tables are InnoDB.

  • Linux QoS: bulk data transmission during idle times

    - by syneticon-dj
How would I do a QoS setup where a certain low-priority data stream would get up to X Mbps of bandwidth, but only if the current total bandwidth (of all streams/classes) on this interface does not exceed X? At the same time, other data streams / classes must not be limited to X. The use case is an ISP billing the traffic by calculating the bandwidth average over 5 minute intervals and billing the maximum. I would like to keep the maximum usage to a minimum (i.e. quench the bulk transfer during interface busy times) but get the data through during idle/low traffic times. Looking at the frequently used classful schedulers CBQ, HTB and HSFC I cannot see a straightforward way to accomplish this.

  • How to access Windows Registry from DOS

    - by SEARAS
How to access Windows Registry from DOS? I need to access registry from DOS, while I boot from DOS bootable disk. I've searched all the internet, and found only Offline NT Password and Registry Editor, which can not be used in DOS, as I understand. Also I've found RegView (from many mirrors), which isn't working too (I've tried many instructions). Is there any easy-in-usage tool, like reg.exe, which is able to load registry hives, so that I can change registry values?? Or any working instructions ?? Note: I already have a bootable drive, which can read/write to NTFS drives. Thanks in advance!

  • Is it possible to modify a color scheme and windows decorations in Xfce4?

    - by Juhele
just testing PCLinuxOS Phoenix XFCE Edition 2011-07 which I would like to install on my grandpa's PC instead older PCLOS 2009 with KDE3 (which is almost impossible to upgrade). The PC is relatively older one (Sempron 2200+ CPU, MSI K7N2GM2 board with integrated GeForce 440MX series graphics, 1GB RAM and 80GB IDE HDD) and I thought that it is too weak for KDE4. I already used Xfce in the past (Sam Linux 2006 and 2007), but in new Xfce4 I am not able to somehow change the windows color scheme and the windows decorations - the settings manager offers me switching between preinstalled themes but it is possible to modify them with some GUI?

  • Zabbix - Some of the monitored items dont get refreshd. how to find the reason?

    - by Niro
I'm experiencing a strange issue with Zabbix monitoring a MySQL server. Most of the data from the server such as MySQL queries per second and MySQL uptime , Buffers memory etc. update nicely while some data like CPU iowait time (avg1) , Host local time ,MySQL number of threads and other items which were monitored in the past has last check time of about a week ago. I can't find any logic in this, for example Mysql number of threads and Mysql queries per second are obtained in a similar way so it does not make sense one of them is monitored and one is not. Please help- how can I fix this?

  • Installing ruby 1.9.1 on OS X with RVM, getting error I can't make sense of

    - by Pselus
I'm trying to update my ruby install on Leopard to at least 1.9.1. • How to backup data on debian vps to dropbox?

    - by IBr
I have really simple private VPS with some webpages and music server. I want to backup some configs and some scripts to dropbox or similar service. Server has no gui (except simple ssh X forwarding, which is neither convenient for constant usage and does not provide full desktop) everything is controlled through ssh. So my question would is it possible to setup dropbox client for command line use? How? Is there any alternatives for dropbox, which would have command line clients? Also is it possible to incorporate backup into script for cron job?

  • How do i mitigate DDOS attacks on static servers?

    - by acidzombie24
Here is a slightly different take on DDOS attacks. Rather than a server with dynamic content being attack i was curious how to deal with attacks on servers with STATIC CONTENT. This means cpu tends to not be an issue. Its either bandwidth or connection problems. How would i mitigate a DDOS attack knowing nothing about the attacker (for example country, ip address or anything else). I was wondering is shorting the timeout and increasing amount of connections is an acceptable solution? Or maybe that is completely useless? Also i would limit the amount of connections per IP address. Would the above help or be pointless? Keeping in mind everything is static checking for multiple request of the same page (html, css, js, etc) could be a sign of a attack. What are some measures i can take on a static content server?

I came across Graphite which looks pretty good but wondering if there is anything better out there before I settle down with that tool. Here's the list of features I am interested in: Must-Have Open Source license API to submit real time data Web-based visualization interface Persistence - file or database Nice-To-Have Dashboard Capabilities: Allow users to select a few metrics (CPU, Heap Usage, # of Active Users etc.) and place them on a single page for easier monitoring. Any suggestions?

  • Computer not working, motherboard is suspect

    - by Arlen Beiler
I have a problem with my computer. I have a GeForce 6100 M9 Motherboard, which I suspect is broke. The capacitors beside the CPU are corroded and the computer doesn't do anything except start the fans when I push the power button. The problem is that I can't find another motherboard as they apparently don't sell this model anymore. I have tested the Power Supply and it appears to be working. Any advice would be appreciated. Different forums have mentioned that you can replace the capacitors. Any help on this would be appreciated.

  • Network adapters reliability

    - by casey_miller
Can you help me with understanding of reliability of network adapters. Most of the time servers do have at least 2 NIC's bonded to provide sort of a HA for it. So in case of one NIC fails, the second would still do the job. I wonder which factors work when you use network adapters. I know that, the most important and weakest part of any computer system is: storage (i.e HDD). but how reliable actually network adapters are? There are more expensive ones, and cheaper adapters. In which cases do they actually fail? In what circumstances. May it be a intensive usage of them Time when it's on In your experience how often you found yourself changing NIC's due to their fail? Or just what's the typical lifetime of commodity NIC's? thanks.

  • Have an iPad's viewable area visible on your computer monitor for remote web-meeting training?

    - by MikeN
I want to demo the usage of my iPad on my computer screen so that I can transmit it to other people during a training session using a web conference tool (like dimdim.com, gotomeeting.com, fuzemeeting.com, etc...) Is there a way to stream an iPad's display to a computer so it would be visible in such a screen casting software? My current ad-hoc solution for this would be to use a webcam to livecast me using a physical (real life) iPad and broadcast that to other users for training. This is undesirable due to the difficulty in really seeing the iPad well. So I'm hoping someone has a way to do: 1) Video output the iPad's display to my computer screen. 2) Emulate an iPad with a installed app (not having the source code) on the screen.

  • CLI-Based monitoring tool for KVM

    - by Pinnacle
I am developing a scheduler for running VMs on KVM. The scheduling has over-commitment of resources like memory and CPU. For this, I need a CLI-based monitoring tool that keeps me giving information about the resource usage of each VM, because it might be the case that due to over-provisioning of resources, VMs on a particular host are running very slowly depending on the benchmarks/programs each VM is running, and then I need to migrate a VM to another host and so on. I looked into libvirt-based tools like collects, MUNIN, Nagios-vert, etc.( http://libvirt.org/apps.html#monitoring ) I also looked into Ubuntu utility perf-kvm ( http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/maverick/man1/perf-kvm.1.html ) I want to ask which CLI-based would be recommended by the community so that I can make a automated scheduler that takes care of the above situation.

  • How to interpret IOZone results?

    - by homer5439
Here are the resuts of running IOZone on an ext3 filesystem on an LVM volume residing on a SAN LUN (it was ran with 5 parallel processes). "Throughput report Y-axis is type of test X-axis is number of processes" "Record size = 4 Kbytes " "Output is in Kbytes/sec" " Initial write " 81628.55 " Rewrite " 83354.72 " Read " 115595.02 " Re-read " 119306.09 " Reverse Read " 47684.20 " Stride read " 10011.09 " Random read " 16751.27 " Mixed workload " 5659.77 " Random write " 1661.85 " Pwrite " 36030.83 Now this is all nice and dandy, but my question is: how do I know whether the values are as good as they could be or there is something to tweak (and if so, what?) The actual usage I will have for that Logical Volume is to act as virtual disk for a VM.

  • Hyper-V Guests suddenly stopped working

    - by Anton Gogolev
Hi! Here's my configuration: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard as a host OS, and two guests VMs running the same exact OS. Yesterday, Trial Activation on all OSes has expired and quite naturally all machines shut down. I rearmed the host, but cannot log on to either guest VMs. From what I see, they start up normally (State is listed as Running) but CPU Usage seems to be stuck at 3% and when I connect to it all I see is black textmode screen with cursor blinking. One of my VMs has several snapshots, and when I revert back, it starts up normally. Moreover, "reference VM" (the one I cloned these two VMs from) starts up just normally. How can I troubleshoot this issue?

  • PC doesn't power up anymore

    - by Andrew
I will tell you the story behind the problem. The computer needed to be reinstalled, it has 2 HDDs so I had to un-plug one to see which is which, to save as much data as possible. After unplugging the first one, it booted with the reinstallation CD, it wasn't the HDD I was looking for so I turned it off and unplugged the other one. After unplugging and turning on, right after booting test, the HDD was turned off, only the CPU fan was working. Turned it off with the power supply's button help, holding the power button didn't do it. And now it doesn't want to turn on anymore. I tried with another test power supply but the result is the same, doesn't want to turn on. Any idea?

  • Problems with blocking reads using libudev on Linux

    - by Steve Hawkins
We are using the following routine (on Linux, with libudev) to read data from a PIC microcontroller configured as a USB HID device. The data is sent only when a button connected to the PIC microcontroller is pressed or released. The routine is missing messages from the PIC controller, and I suspect that this is because the call to poll below is not behaving as it should. The call to poll will reliably block for 1 second util the first message is read. As soon as the first message is read, the call to poll returns immediately instead of blocking for 1 second (1000 milliseconds) like it should. I have worked around this problem by closing and re-opening the device after each read. This makes poll behave correctly, but I think that closing and re-opening the device may be the reason for the lost messages. bool PicIo::Receive (unsigned char* picData, const size_t picDataSize) { static hiddev_report_info hidReportInfo; static hiddev_usage_ref_multi hidUsageRef; if (-1 == PicDeviceDescriptor()) { return false; } // Determine whether or not there is data available to be read pollfd pollFd; pollFd.fd = PicDeviceDescriptor(); pollFd.events = POLLIN; int dataPending = poll (&pollFd, 1, 1000); if (dataPending <= 0) { return false; } // Initialize the HID Report structure for an input report hidReportInfo.report_type = HID_REPORT_TYPE_INPUT; hidReportInfo.report_id = 0; hidReportInfo.num_fields = 64; if (-1 == ioctl(PicDeviceDescriptor(), HIDIOCGREPORT, &hidReportInfo)) { return false; } // Initizlize the HID Usage Reference for an Input report hidUsageRef.uref.report_type = HID_REPORT_TYPE_INPUT; hidUsageRef.uref.report_id = 0; hidUsageRef.uref.field_index = 0; hidUsageRef.uref.usage_index = 0; hidUsageRef.num_values = 64; if (-1 == ioctl(PicDeviceDescriptor(), HIDIOCGUSAGES, &hidUsageRef)) { return false; } // Transfer bytes from the usage report into the return value. for (size_t idx=0; (idx < 64) && (idx < picDataSize); ++idx) { picData[idx] = hidUsageRef.values[idx]; } return true; } The function PicDeviceDescriptor() does checking on the device to make sure that it is present. Here are the pertinent details of the PicDeviceDescriptor function, showing how the device is begin opened. int PicIo::PicDeviceDescriptor(int command) { struct stat statInfo; static int picDeviceDescriptor = -1; string picDevicePath = "/dev/usb/hiddev0"; if ((-1 != picDeviceDescriptor) && (CLOSE == command)) { close (picDeviceDescriptor); picDeviceDescriptor = -1; } else if ((-1 != picDeviceDescriptor) && (-1 == fstat(picDeviceDescriptor, &statInfo))) { // Handle the case where the PIC device had previously been detected, and // is now disconnected. close (picDeviceDescriptor); picDeviceDescriptor = -1; } else if ((-1 == picDeviceDescriptor) && (m_picDevice.IsConnected())) { // Create the PIC device descriptor if the PIC device is present (i.e. its // device node is present) and if the descriptor does not already exist picDeviceDescriptor = open (picDevicePath.c_str(), O_RDONLY); } return picDeviceDescriptor; } I'm sure that I'm doing something wrong, but I've Googled the issue and cannot seem to find any relevant answers. Any help would be very much appreciated -- Thx.

  • Watch TV/recorded shows from my Comcast cable box on my Mac?

    - by IVR Avenger
Hi, all. I've got a MacBook that's about three years old (it's the first generation that had a dual core CPU), running Leopard. I've got a Comcast DVR/HD Cable box. Is there something that I can install in between these devices that will let me watch TV from the Cable box on the Mac's display? The Cable box is in one room, but my tush and the Mac are in the other (fixing code on another machine that can't be part of the equation). Any ideas? Thanks! IVR Avenger

  • Missing disk space in Windows XP

    - by Jørn Schou-Rode
On my mother's Lenovo laptop, Windows XP claims that the hard drive is almost full. According to the properties window, 52.7 out of 55.2 GB is in use: By deleting temp files from Internet Explorer, System Restore, Recycle bin, Windows Update, System Cleanup, I managed to free up about one GB. That's still 50 GB in use, which still is a lot more than I expected. Hence, I gave good old WinDirStat a spin, and here's the output: It might be hard to read here, but the first line says that the total amount of disk space in use on drive C is 24.3 GB. So Windows claims usage of 52.7 GB and WinDirStat can only account for 24.3 GB. Where is the other half of that disk space being used? I hope someone has an answer, or some tricks or tips to do further research. UPDATE: The laptop in question has an SSD hard drive. I am aware that these disk (at least the earlier ones) have a limited life-time. Could the symptoms described be caused by wear and tear on the SSD?

  • Disable .net completely in a IIS6 Application Pool

    - by David L.-Pratte
we're managing some web sites for our clients on our servers, some running Windows Server 2003 R2 and others running 2008 R2. In Windows Server 2008 R2, we can disable completely .NET framework usage for some application pools, which is great since most of our websites are still using classic ASP. After some issues with classic ASP applications being configured to run as ASP.NET 4 in a CLR 2.0 pool, we wanted to do the same thing in IIS6 - that is, have application pools without any .NET support. Is this a supported scenario in IIS6? Thanks

  • Tools for analyzing performance of SQL Server/Express?

    - by Adam Crossland
The application that I have customized and continue to support for my client is seeing dramatic performance problems in the field. Simple queries on rather small datasets take over a minute when I would expect them to complete with sub-second times. My current theory is that SQL Server Express 2005 is too limited for the rather non-trivial demands being made of it, but I am not sure how to get about gathering data that I can use to either prove my point or allow me to move on to finding another cause. Can anyone point me toward some tools that would allow me to analyze the load on this database? Information such as simultaneous connections, execution times of individual queries, memory usage, heck just any profiling data at all would be a help. Many thanks.
